Berkshire Busk! is back
BY ELLEN SPEAR BerkshiresWeek
Four and a half years ago, entrepreneur and musician Eugene Carr was looking to create “a new kind of Berkshire magic.”
berkshire busk!
Downtown Great Barrington
Friday and Saturday evenings beginning at 6:30 p.m. June 28 — Aug. 31 berkshirebusk.com
During the cultural doldrums of the COVID pandemic, he found himself an entrepreneur waiting for his next project. Taking note of the success of closing Railroad Street to create outdoor dining opportunities in Great Barrington in response to the health emergency, he began to ponder how performance and culture could be boosted similarly. Carr contacted the town to ascertain their interest in partnering with him to create an outdoor environment where musicians and performers from inside and outside of the community could perform for the public at no charge on a regular basis, providing a “cultural smorgasbord” for the community. He then approached local business people downtown, who he believed would ultimately benefit by the creation of a consistent outdoor festival over the summer months. They signed on, as did other sponsors, and Berkshire Busk! became a reality.
The Busk turns the streets of downtown Great Barrington into a sprawling outdoor space for musicians, jugglers and performers that defy specific description, all doing their thing on the streets for audiences of all ages.
Busking, or the art of performing outdoors for tips is a time-honored tradition all over the world. Some famous American buskers have included Joshua Bell, whose violin stint on the platforms of New York City subway stations when he was not in the great concert halls of the world did not arouse much interest from jaded New Yorkers. Other buskers who broke out of the pack to achieve stardom are B.B. King, who played on the streets of Mississippi and Tracy Chapman, who could be heard playing on the streets of Harvard Square in Cambridge.
The festival here takes place every Friday and Saturday night starting at 6:30 p.m. from June 28
through August 31. Rather than ticketed events where patrons sit in seats throughout entire performances, Carr has designed the Busk to be a moveable feast, where attendees — over 28,000 of them last year over the course of
the festival — can move from performance to performance, discovering new talent from community members and artists who come in from farther away.
About 100 performers have been signed up for this season. Carr
says that when the Busk began, the sheer number of applicants eager to perform took everyone by surprise. New this year are performances resulting from partnerships with Jacob’s Pillow, Berkshire Pride and Festival Latino. Outdoor dining on Railroad Street will continue and the Busk has also expanded to include performances at the Saturday morning Great Barrington Farmers Market and afternoon performances called “Berkshire Busk! Roadside” at Berkshire Mountain Distillers in Sheffield from 2 to 4 p.m. Carr is pleased with the evolution of the Busk, and is looking ahead to expand the festival’s reach to more performers from out of the area, and potentially to consult with other communities about how to create and sustain their own versions of the sometimes funky, always fun street festival.
Carr is particularly satisfied when he sees hundreds of people gathered around a street performer, children enthralled, adults entertained, having discovered a new performer or music genre they hadn’t known before. “The Berkshires is fertile ground for creativity,” says Carr, that lends itself to nurturing this summer-long street festival.
