Holistic Healing & Complementary Therapies to consider for pets
Complementary therapies are non-invasive treatments that are used alongside conventional veterinary medicine to help manage pain and chronic conditions in pets, or as a component of preventive care. Here’s a look at several complementary therapies pet owners can consider utilizing to enhance their companions’ health and well-being:
Acupuncture
Most often employed to treat dogs and cats with arthritis and joint inflammation, this treatment uses very fine needles inserted at pressure points to help alleviate pain and improve circulation, as well as relieve neurological
conditions, stimulate appetite and reduce nausea.
Chiropractic
This therapy involves spinal manipulation to promote proper alignment and is most often used to treat degenerative joint diseases, intervertebral disk disease, incontinence, musculoskeletal weakness and chronic pain in dogs and cats.
Hydrotherapy
Allowing dogs to exercise in water helps increase circulation and flexibility without putting pressure on joints. This therapy can be beneficial in treating orthopedic
Say hello to bonded sister and brother duo Teddy and Rosie! Teddy and Rosie are 7-year-old Chihuahua mixes who are looking for a home where they can spend their golden years. They can be a tad nervous meeting new people, but with time, patience, and especially cookies, they are sure to become fast friends with you. Some of their favorite activities include hanging out with their human friends, going on walks, romping in the shelter pen and eating all the cookies! (Did we mention they love eating cookies?) Teddy and Rosie have lived with children before and could potentially live with them again, as well as with cats! This lovable pair is mostly house trained but do have accidents every once in a while, so they could use a refresher in that department. If you’d like to give this adorable pair of senior pups a new lease on life, please reach out to the Berkshire Humane Society kennel staff at (413)-447-7878 ext. 126

injuries, neurological problems and other health conditions, as well as aiding postsurgical recovery.
Massage Therapy
Using hand movements to improve muscle and joint function, massage therapy can help alleviate pain, support joint mobility and relieve stress and anxiety in dogs and cats.
Therapeutic Laser Treatment
Veterinary laser therapies can be used to decrease inflammation and pain and improve wound healing in pets by promoting cell regeneration and increasing blood circulation.

Staying hydrated to reduce the risk for heat illness is imperative. Water will almost always help people remain hydrated even when working in the heat, but eating regular meals can also help prevent heat illness by replacing salt lost through sweat, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The CDC advises against consuming energy drinks and alcohol when spending time in the hot sun. Many energy drinks contain more caffeine than standard servings of coffee, tea and soft drinks, and excessive caffeine consumption can contribute to dehydration. The CDC also reports that drinking alcohol within 24 hours of working in the heat can increase the risk of heat illness.
Engaging in fitness activities that are enjoyable can increase the liklihood that a person will remain committed to routine exercise. In addition to being fun, swimming is an exercise that benefits the entire body. It’s also ideal for people of all ages, as the buoyancy of water reduces the strain on muscles and joints.
Healthline reports that an hour of swimming burns almost as many calories as running, without all the impact to the bones and joints. Many people who commit to swimming each week may have no problem getting the recommended 150 minutes of moderate activity or 75 minutes of vigorous activity each week recommended by various health
organizations. Here are some of the ways swimming is good for your body.
Engages the entire body: Swimming works just about all the muscles of the body. Various swimming strokes can enable a person to focus on certain muscle groups.
A thorough cardiovascular workout: Swimming increases heart rate without stressing the body. The fitness level can be customized and gradually built up so that one can increase strength and endurance.
Reduces body fat: Swimming can help many people slim down. According to Harvard Medical school, a 155-pound person can burn about 432 calories swimming versus about 266 calories walking at a moderate
pace for the same duration of time. A 2021 study published in BMC Sports Science, Medicine and Rehabilitation revealed that 16 weeks of swimming led to significant reductions in body fat and BMI.
Improves heart health: Research has linked swimming to a reduction in blood pressure and additional benefits related to improved cardiovascular health.
Enhances lung volume: Swimming involves deeper breathing and can strengthen the muscles involved with respiration, says Everyday Health.
Improves quality of life: Older adults who swim may experience decreased rates of disability and improved quality of life.
Swimming helps to improve or maintain bone health, particularly among post-menopausal women. Water-based exercise also is lowimpact and builds strength.
Improves mental health: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that swimming can improve mood in both men and women. Swimming may decrease anxiety, and exercise therapy in warm water can improve symptoms of depression. S
