Where Care, Creativity and Cutting-Edge Technology Converge
BY ANTHONY DUVAL Sponsored Content
The moment you enter Silver Solutions MedSpa, you’ll be greeted by Nina Silver and her skilled team with warmth and professionalism. If scheduling permits, staff will personally give you a guided tour of the gorgeous MedSpa, from the state-ofthe-art treatment rooms where they make medical aesthetic magic happen, to their relaxing Himalayan Salt Stone Sanctuary for post and pre-treatment grounding and relaxation.
Located in Pittsfield, MA, Silver Solutions MedSpa combines the aesthetic lens of professionally trained artists, with cutting-edge advances in aesthetic medicine and data-driven skincare. Here, art, creativity, innovation, and intention that is clearly grounded in fostering the holistic wellbeing of patients, all comes together in the form of personalized nonsurgical skin care for all skin types and needs. Silver Solutions is not only home to highly qualified practitioners, but is equipped with the latest and safest technology, which includes but is not limited to a GPS-guided laser that automatically adjusts to treat sun damage, red spots, and veins.
Silver Solutions MedSpa specializes in medical aesthetics and rejuvenation such as cosmetic injectables (Botox, Dysport, Jeuveau, and a wide array of dermal fillers), medical grade hydrafacials, and an extensive range of additional nonsurgical procedures, such as bio regenerative treatments inclusive to: Platelet Rich Plasma/Fibrin, Sculptra, Microneedling, and Radiesse which all encourage your body to make its own collagen.
If you’re unsure whether you would be a good candidate for certain procedures, or if you are inspired to explore what treatments would be best suited to your goals and needs, you can count on Silver and her team to provide clear and informed guidance throughout the entire process. Patient education through open, honest, and attuned conversation is at the heart of what makes Silver Solutions MedSpa unique in the medical aesthetics field. To them, it’s more than a transaction, it’s an art aimed at elevating self-care and self-concept with safety, attunement, and patient education at its core.
“We always want to fully educate our patients before moving forward with any treatments. We discuss patient goals and priorities, and make sure that patients are not only excellent candidates for the treatments they are seeking, but are also comfortable throughout the entire pre-treatment, treatment, and post-treatment care process,” says Silver.
Each patient receives a personalized treatment plan aligned with their goals and needs that also includes options for budget minded patients. The goal is to ensure that everyone that comes for a consultation and/or treatment, regardless of economic status, has reasonable access to a selfcare plan that is tailored to their skin care and wellness goals, as well as their budgetary needs.
SAFETY & EDUCATION – A TOP PRIORITY
Before treatment begins, a careful review of each patient’s medical history and a thorough consultation is conducted. While most patients come to Silver for consultation regarding non-surgical treatments, not all are ideal candidates, and these patients may be referred out if their needs and goals are better suited to surgery or treatment interventions performed solely by dermatologists, or other specialists.
During a specialized Skin Consultation, Silver and her team will mark the specific areas of concern, and also use the VISIA Skin Analysis Device to scan the patient’s face and develop a comprehensive treatment plan. VISIA captures facial images at various angles using different filters and UV. This helps to analyze the face through different skin layers identifying immediate areas of concern on the surface (e.g., wrinkles, dark spots) and also identifies issues that may arise over time that present deeper in the skin (e.g., UV spots).
All this information, and the reports generated, are shared openly with patients, to give them autonomy in understanding and choosing the best route of care suited to their desires and needs.

process to guarantee patients that their treatment meets FDA-approved standards.
Throughout pre-treatment, treatment, and post-treatment follow ups, Silver and her team strive to relate to patients on a very personal level. Silver reassures patients considering Botox, Dysport, and Jeuveau by sharing that she personally uses the treatment and often shares her before and afters to demonstrate the impact the treatment has had on her appearance over time. Silver’s entire team discusses personal treatment stories and proven methods they and their friends and family members have used for achieving the lasting skin-health and aesthetic results tailored to their needs.
“A lot goes on behind those doors. We talk about our family, friends, and relationships. There’s a lot of sharing that goes on. Many of my patients have been with me since I first started practicing in 2009!” says Silver.
voluntary facial muscle spasms that cause the eyelids to close tightly, a patient of Dr. Jean and Dr. Caruther’s noticed that the Botox not only helped with blepharospasm but also worked to smooth their forehead wrinkles. As a result, the application of Botox in medical aesthetics was born.
There was very little formal research on aesthetic medicine at the time of Dr. Jean and Dr. Carruthers discovery. Aesthetic medicine has come a long way since then. Notably, Silver points out that there are currently studies being conducted using MRI scans and ultrasounds to see how medications like Botox and dermal filler work within the tissue.
Silver notes that the key to safety and success in aesthetic medicine is staying current with practices and valuing lifelong learning, and she and her team are evidence of this.
to the efficacy of what is offered at Silver Solutions. After acquiring foundational knowledge and skills, licensed providers also must invest time in mastering nuances, such as examining a patient’s every expression before and after treatment to ensure that their unique anatomy has been highlighted in a way that results in a natural look.
GREATER DIVERSITY IN SKIN TREATMENT
A “natural look” can mean a lot of things to individual patients, each with varying skin types, medical and anatomical considerations, and needs. Silver is most proud and excited that her treatments can help a diverse range of patients and skin types.
“We never see ourselves realistically in the mirror. And I want to make sure that we’re all on the same page – that I’m seeing what’s concerning them and also pointing out solutions and any additional areas of need that make themselves apparent during consultation,” says Silver.
For Botox, one of the MedSpa’s most popular treatments, Silver will discuss every muscle they’re treating, the dose they are using, and will mark the muscles to show where the injection points will be.
First-time patients will have a follow-up appointment two weeks later to verify that their medication dosage is appropriate. Health history, treatment options, and consents are assessed by their Medical Director, Dr. Joseph Russo, in collaboration with a team of nurse practitioners, who assist in making treatment decisions and are on standby for any emergencies. Each treatment undergoes this
If any doubt remains for a patient, Silver directs them to their website, social media, and Google Reviews. These platforms showcase before and afters and testimonials of patients who have decided to pursue similar treatment, which often helps to ease any initial anxiety that a prospective patient, new to medical aesthetics, may have.
EMBRACING LIFELONG LEARNING
The field of aesthetic medicine is still relatively nuanced and is continually evolving through innovations inspired by new medical research and technology. While Botulinum toxin, or Botox, now one the most commonly used treatments in aesthetic medicine, was first tested for cosmetic treatment in 1987 by Drs. Jean and Alastair Carruthers, their research was only published in 1991.
First explored for medical aesthetics in 1987, Botox had been used medically for years prior to treat strabismus, a misalignment of the eyes. Its aesthetic potential was discovered as a welcomed side effect of its traditional medical use. When being used to treat blepharospasm, a condition characterized by in-
In the coming months, her team will be attending aesthetic medicine conferences like the Modern Beauty Con in Boston, co-founded by Silver’s friend and colleague Renata Roddy, NP owner of Roddy MedSpa, and the Medical Aesthetics Professionals (MAP) meeting in Arizona alongside their medical director, Dr. Russo. Thereafter, Silver and Ashley Paradise, RN, LE Tracy Martin, DNP will be attending Skin CEO the ultimate Sciton Laser conference in New York City.
Continuing education ties into how Silver builds her team, which begins with a 90-day training and onboarding period for all new employees. Silver notes that the aesthetic medicine field has a huge learning curve that calls for in-depth learning and careful planning that go well beyond poking needles into muscles. This ongoing learning involves engaging in educational courses, hands-on training and events, and the review of extensive medical standard operating procedures, as well as published research on a variety of topics related to medical aesthetics.
Some of the learning involved, like the attendance of annual cadaver courses, certainly isn’t for the faint of heart, but is essential
“Our greatest desire is to offer care that meets the dynamic needs of all of those who enter our office. We are thrilled to be able to serve the diverse and expanding population of the Berkshires and surrounding areas, and are committed to improving equity in access to informed medical aesthetic care, and to celebrating the diversity present within our community.”

Wondering how your prized flower stacks up?
Check out Botanical Garden Grow Show this weekend
BY ELLEN SPEAR BerkshiresWeek
“Lost and Found” is the theme at this year’s Grow Show at the Berkshire Botanical Garden in Stockbridge. Over the weekend of Aug. 10 & 11, amateur gardeners will bring their specimen blooms, vegetables, containers and floral designs to the Garden’s Exhibition Hall to be judged by Garden Club of America judges.
Berkshire Botanical Garden has posted the guidelines for entry, which is free, whether you enter just the perfect zucchini or every vegetable and flower category in the competition. Information on what the judges will be looking for is included. For those interested in seeing examples of perfect dahlias, hydrangeas, roses and nearly 80 other categories of flower and vegetable, the show is an opportunity to get ideas for your own garden and to marvel at the variety and beauty.
In an interview, Garden co-director Mike Beck said the Grow Show is “one of the most mission-driven things we do. It allows so many people in the community from novice to expert to participate in a meaningful way.”
He encourages home gardeners of all levels of proficiency to consider entering a plant in the show. “You’d be surprised what you can find in your own garden that would make a good bloom to enter into the show.”
Beck says participation is as simple as reviewing the possible categories at the Garden’s website, taking a walk through your garden on the afternoon before the show (Friday, Aug. 9) and snipping flowers and vegetables that look good. Bring them to the garden, he advises, where volunteers will help you fill out entry cards and enter your stem or veggie in the right category.
Eric Ruquist, BBG’s director of horticulture, said in an interview that he’s particularly interested in seeing the designed floral arrangement submissions and how the entrants interpret the “Lost and Found” theme. He says he always comes away from the show inspired. He notes that the Garden will also feature container gardens created by professional designers.
There will be a “Contained Exuberance” walkabout scheduled at 3 p.m. on Aug. 10. The designers of the containers will be on hand to talk about their work and share tips. These creations also respond to the Grow Show theme.
The Caterpillar Lab will also be in full operation. If you’ve ever had questions about the moths flying into your backyard light, on Saturday from 9 — 11 p.m. you can get some answers. You’ll be able to see some local caterpillars and chat with educators about these insects and their habitats, then discuss mothing and its role in research, nature study, and forest health. Then the lights go on, and you’ll wait for moths to arrive. When they show up, educators will lead an investigation and search for bugs. The evening will end at a moth light, a specialized bulb that is particularly attractive to nocturnal insects. You’ll be given information on what creatures show up.
Ruquist echoes Mike Beck’s encouragement of home gardeners to consider participating in the show. He says it’s instructive to see how your blooms or vegetables compare with others around the Berkshires, and says seeing the entries always imparts excitement and inspiration for gardeners.

The art of brewing at Norman Rockwell Museum
BY ELLEN SPEAR BerkshiresWeek
Norman Rockwell and beer? Find out the connection on August 10 from 1 — 4 p.m. when the 6th annual Art of Brewing day takes place at the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge. Your ticket gets you 10 samples from among the featured craft beer makers and distilleries which will be offering a taste on the museum grounds. You also get a commemorative beer glass to take home.
There will be food trucks, coffee trucks (brewed, get it?), cider, wine, distilled spirits, non-alcoholic drinks, lawn games, music and exhibits of the illustration art that adorns many craft brew cans. Event organizer, Alexa Wichowsky says there will be a MAD theme to correspond with the museum’s MAD Magazine art exhibition inside, and the work of artist Jesse Tobin McCauley, who designs art for the cans of Pittsfield’s Hot Plate Brewery, will be featured. Wichowsky says besides the opportunity to sample the brew, she hopes that participants will become more aware of the connection between illustration art and the images that are all around us — like on beer cans, for instance. She also notes that Rockwell himself was a beer fan, and did an illustration for a beer ad during his illustrious career.
Some of the breweries scheduled to appear include local favorites like Antimony Brewing, Barrington, Hot Plate and Big Elm. Others from a little farther afield like Roe-Jan and Amherst Brewing will also be represented.
Brewery reps will be happy to talk with you as you sip, munch, play games and take in the art. Admission to the exhibitions inside the museum come with Art of Brewing tickets.

How cool is this clown-faced kitty? This handsome 4-year-old boy with the unique markings is Astin Martin! Astin Martin arrived at Berkshire Humane Society along with his housemates after his owner sadly passed away. Now this big boy with the polydactyl (extra toes) feet is hoping for a new home where he’ll receive extra playtime. He has a tendency to play a little rough, so a home with children aged 10+ would be best, especially since he’s lived with adults only. Astin Martin has lived indoors only and will do fine with other cats, particularly any of his housemates. He’s described by the feline staff as super affectionate and he loves attention. If you’re not paying attention to him, he’ll quietly paw at you to pet him. If you think you’d like to arrange a meet and greet with Astin Martin, please reach out to the Berkshire Humane Society feline staff at (413)-447-7878 ext. 124.
LOW COST SPAY AND NEUTER
Spaying and neutering has been proven to be the most effective and humane way to stop pet overpopulation as well as the senseless deaths of so many adoptable animals. Berkshire Humane Society wants to be part of the solution to this nationwide problem. That’s why we offer several low-cost spay and neuter options for cat and dog owners who are in financial need and who live in Berkshire County and neighboring regions. Please remember to plan ahead! For more information, call 413-447-7878.
