Community is at cidery’s core
BY ELLEN SPEAR
When we think of food and the Berkshires, most often farm-to-table and craft beer comes to mind. In addition to locally grown produce and local brews, the Berkshires is becoming a center for serious cider-making, led by the folks at the Berkshire Cider Project. Husband and wife team Kat Hand and Matt Brogan are the people behind the cider, having started their cider inquiry in their kitchen in New York.
Fast forward to a lively cidery located at Greylock Works in North Adams where
their production space and a tasting room are located. Since they consider themselves an “urban cidery”, they don’t have orchards of their own. Berkshire Cider Project turns out small batch hard ciders from local apples grown by others, including a “community” pressing that features apples that people bring in from their own back yard gardens. There is no sugar added to their apple pressings and fermenting, resulting in 9 dry, sparkling types. They even make one in a champagne style that is hand-disgorged.
This is not your average apple juice. The ciders are complex and sophisticated, each with a unique taste profile and

appeal. Some are fermented in French wine barrels, and many use heirloom apples that are hard to find. There is even a Pet-Nat made from foraged Dolgo crabapples, and blended with fresh McIntosh from an abandoned orchard in Vermont. The “pétillant-naturel” style means the cider’s fermentation completes in the bottle. Their annual Cidermakers Dinner is
coming up at Hancock Shaker Village. There, they and diners who reserve a spot can help celebrate the release of a craft cider made from apples that were gathered from Hancock Shaker Village’s heirloom orchard. It is made using a wild ferment technique and is similar to what the Shakers could have made from their crop at the Village. The setting is beautiful. You’ll enjoy cocktails in the working gardens at the Village, enjoy a farm-to-table dinner prepared by Chef Kevin Kelly of After Hours GB, with cider pairings selected by the cider makers. Berkshire Cider Project beverages have medaled in national competition.
A rts & Crafts take over downtown Stockbridge
BY CHRIS GAUTHIER BerkshiresWeek
Among the artists and craftspeople who travel the well-trodden East Coast art and crafts show circuit, there is one show that consistently ranks as one of the best — the Stockbridge Summer Arts and Crafts Show, which transforms the grounds of the Town Offices and Bidwell Park into a vibrant tapestry of creativity on Aug. 17 and 18.
“The quality of the work [at the show] and the fact that it’s a juried process makes it so great,” explained Christina Giebner, a jewelry designer who is participating in her fourth show. “There’s a lot of variation in the types of artists and work. It’s really well organized.”
That level of organization has been the key draw for both the ven-
dors and visitors alike. Now in its 32nd year, the arts and crafts show will feature 87 vendors this year, including dozens of repeats, including the husband and wife team of Linda and Nick Barbadoro. Owners and operators of one of the more unique shops to participate, Serenity Bamboo Flutes, the Barbadoros have been selling their handmade flutes, canes and cane-flutes at the Stockbridge show for over 20 years.
Stockbridge Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Barbara J. Zanetti “works her butt off for this show, to keep it balanced and high-quality,” said Linda Barbadoro. “She has to jury everything, and does this to promote art and the town of Stockbridge, not to make any money off of this.”
“When you’re talking about art and making products by hand, [a
show like this] puts us all on the same playing field,” Linda Barbadoro added. “You expect to see objects that are handmade and to meet the artisans who made it and are there to talk about their work.”
This back-andforth conversation is jewelry designer Giebner’s favorite aspect of this show, and she said, is what makes the Berkshires special.

“People who come to this show are really really nice and appreciative,” she said. “I love to be asked a lot of questions and I love seeing how a piece [of jewelry] resonates with someone right away.”
