Chat Bot, meet Arabian Nights
BY ELLEN SPEAR BerkshiresWeek
The world of AI meets the folktales of Asia in an exhibition by Detroit-based artist, Osman Khan at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art. His multimedia works will be on view through March 2025.
the road to hybridabad Mass MoCA, 1040 Mass MoCA Way, North Adams
Through March 2025
In “Road to Hybridabad,” Khan upends rich folk traditions, and stories of magic and the unexplained, from South Asia, the Middle East and other Muslim and immigrant communities. Khan looks at the age-old stories through a lens of new technology. You’ll find an animatronic djinn, drone-operated flying carpets, a wall-destroying sound system and a storytelling Scheherezade AI. This large and sometimes funny display takes you through time and geography, twists together history and fable, and asks us to reassess the narratives around identity, difference and power reflected and recounted in the tales we tell ourselves.
“The Thousand and One Nights” is framed as a series of stories told by a young woman named Scheherazade to the king in order to delay her execution. Each night for 1001 nights, Scheherazade tells the beginning of a tale to the king, who each day postpones her execution in order to hear the end of the story the following evening, along with the start of a new tale.
“Road to Hybridabad” reflects Khan’s own experience of identity formation — which, like “The Thousand and One Nights,” has been influenced by many histories and cultures — blending American, South Asian, Middle Eastern and Muslim lore and visual references.
Djinns, flying carpets, and the storyteller, Scheherazade herself, are familiar in South Asian, Middle Eastern and other Muslim folk traditions. In “Road to Hybridabad,” Khan reflects on the influence of science-fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke’s 3rd law, which theorizes that “Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.”
Let a certain caterpillar whet your literary appetite
SCHEDULE OF EVENTS
SATURDAY
Noon: Bestselling author and food critic, Ruth Reichl talks about her new book, “The Paris Novel,” with writer and producer Paige Orloff. Deemed “mouthwatering” by The New York Times, the novel is about taking chances and finding your true home. She has been honored with six James Beard Awards, including the 2024 Honorable James Beard Lifetime Achievement Award.
1:30 p.m.: Andrew Leland will talk about his first book, “The Country of the Blind: A Memoir at the End of Sight,” which was a finalist for the 2024 Pulitzer Prize in memoir. It is an exploration of the physical experience of blindness, its language, politics and customs. Leland has written for The New York Times Magazine, The New Yorker, McSweeney’s Quarterly, and The San Francisco Chronicle, among other outlets.
3 p.m.: Veteran journalist Martin Baron talks about his book, “Collision of Power: Trump, Bezos, and the Washington Post.” Baron took charge of The Washington Post newsroom in 2013. Seven months later, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos bought the Post, ending 80 years of family ownership.
SUNDAY
11:30 a.m.: Anna Shechtman will discuss “The Riddles of the Sphinx: Inheriting the Feminist History of the Crossword Puzzle,” which is both a memoir about her experience as a female puzzle maker and a history of the crossword puzzle.
1 p.m.: Author Stephen McCauley will talk about his eighth novel, “You Only Call When You’re in Trouble.” Three of his books have been made into feature films. The New York Times Book Review dubbed him “the secret love child of Edith Wharton and Woody Allen.”
2:30 p.m.: Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Paul Muldoon, whose latest book, “Joy in Service on Rue Tagore: Poems,” is his 15th full-length collection of poetry.

That stack of unread books on your nightstand is about to get taller. Spencertown Academy Arts Center’s 19th annual Festival of Books takes place over Labor Day weekend, Aug. 30-Sept. 2, and it is the premier used book sale in the area. If you’ve never been, prepare to jostle with other serious readers to pick out fiction, nonfiction, art books, cookbooks, gardening books — you name it — all placed neatly in categories in rooms overflowing with over 15,000 used books.

In addition to stocking up for the winter, there are readings and book talks with authors, as well as things for the kids — and food! Featured authors this year include Martin Baron, Ruth Reichl, Anna Shectman and Stephen McCauley. The authors’ books are available for purchase and for signing. Admission is free.
For savvy book buyers, Monday, Sept. 2 is “Bargain Book Day” when folks mark down the already inexpensive prices on what’s left.
There is a Special Book Room featuring first editions, signed books, art books and graphic novels. We understand there is even a history of the cartoon series, “The Flintstones” signed by the series creators Bill Hanna and Joe Barbera. Vinyl LPs, DVDs, CDs and audio books are also available. A special section with the work of Miles Davis on vinyl and boxed CDs is planned. This year, there’s a special program for children on Saturday, Aug. 31 beginning at 10 a.m. Your little ones will have a chance to meet “The Very Hungry Caterpillar,” the creation of illustrator Eric Carle who munches his way through the pages of the beloved book. You can take a post-worthy picture of your kids with the caterpillar, have the kids do some art activities and hear a reading of the book.

AUGUST 27-30 - Fee-Waived Adoptions Berkshire Humane Society will be part of a state-wide effort to offer fee-waived adoptions on harder to place cats. Please contact the shelter for more information!
This super sweet guy is Ralph Lauren! Ralph is a 4-year-old tuxedo, domestic shorthair. Ralph starts a bit shy, but with a little love and attention, he warms up quickly. Ralph arrived at the shelter along with several housemates after their owner sadly passed away. Now this friendly boy would love a new home with you! In his prior home, Ralph lived indoors only with adults only. He’s one of the feline area’s resident “chatter boxes” and quite often you’ll find him meowing for attention while he stands in his kitty bed “pressing cookies”. He’s a food motivated cat, which will help him overcome his initial shyness. If you think Ralph Lauren fits your “style” please fill out a cat adoption application and speak with the Berkshire Humane Society feline staff directly at (413)-447-7878 extension. 124. Ralph has been waiting for a home since June 2nd.
