“Laughter Is the Best Medicine” Relaxation
Stress Hormone Cortisol
The United States Department of Veterans Affairs notes that laughter has physiological effects on the body that lead to changes in body chemistry and brain function. For example, laughter increases heart and respiratory rates and oxygen consumption over a short period. These changes ultimately move individuals into a state of relaxation. Additional research has found that laughter can lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol, supporting the suggestion that laughter is an effective and even multi-faceted “medicine.”
Three days of fun for the entire family!
Food, Live Music, Beer & Cider Tent, Fireworks, Hometown Parade, Antique Fire Truck Show, Classic Car Show, Craft Fair, Loads of Children’s Activities, Street Vendors, and so much more!
The Grand Marshall for the Lee Founders Day Parade will be DICK SHIELDS.
Dick will be representing the Dresser Hull Company. Dresser Hull was one of the original members of the Lee Chamber of Commerce. The original Dresser store was built on Railroad Street in 1883. In 1904 Dresser-Hull Company was formed.
A remarkable leader named Carl Wurtzbach became the first president of the Lee Chamber of Commerce in 1924. He was also president of the Dresser Hull Company and Lee Electric Company.
The Shields family purchased Dresser Hull in 1953 and in 1977 Dick Shields took over as President. As the Chamber looked to celebrate 100 years, we turned to one of our original members and long-time supporter, Dresser Hull Company. Happy 100th Birthday, Lee Chamber of Commerce (1924-2024)! Dine al fresco on Main Street downtown with tastings from Lee’s finest restaurants and vendors! See page 10 for participants.
FRIDAY NIGHT! 5 to 8 pm
Lee Founders Weekend
As the Lee Chamber of Commerce prepares to celebrate their centennial during the 2024 Lee Founders Day, the town looks back on a remarkable journey of perseverance, growth and community spirit.
From the roaring optimism of the 1920s to navigating the complexities of the 21st century, the Chamber has been an enduring advocate for Lee, maintaining it as “the gateway to the Berkshires.” Let’s explore how the Lee Chamber of Commerce has played a pivotal role in shaping Lee into the vibrant community it is today.
It’s the “Roaring Twenties,” and Lee is booming with wealth from the paper and quarrying industries. During this golden era the Lee Businessmen’s Association recognized the need for a more formalized structure to better serve the town’s interests. On January 18, 1924, they voted to establish the Lee Chamber of Commerce, with Carl Wurtzbach of the Dresser Hull Company and Lee Electric Company as their first president.
Wurtzbach set ambitious goals for the Chamber in collaboration with the Town of Lee, such as surfacing Lee’s Main Street, developing street signage and numbering, keeping Jacob’s Ladder Road open in winter and developing Sandy Beach. Wurtzbach also had a grander vision of attracting businesses and visitors to Lee and Western Massachusetts. This led to promotional efforts, including a brochure touting Lee as the “Gateway to the Berkshires,” a slogan that would become synonymous with the town’s identity.
The Great Depression of the 1930s presented significant challenges, but the Lee Chamber of Commerce remained committed to supporting the community.

A CENTURY OF RESILIENCE:
The Lee Chamber of Commerce
They organized fundraising activities to assist families in need, particularly during the Christmas season. The Chamber advocated for local zoning regulations and took a stand against proposed taxes detrimental to Lee’s industries. They continued to promote the town through improved brochures and active opposition to potentially harmful state policies.
The post-World War II era brought the loss of Carl Wurtzbach and closure of the Greenock Inn, but also a significant victory with the opening of the Massachusetts Turnpike in 1957. The Turnpike’s main exit in Lee helped boost local traffic and commerce.
During the 1970s and 1980s, the Chamber played a critical role in organizing community events like “Saleabration Days” and “A County Fair,” the latter of which drew 30,000 people and had 350 business participants in 1986. Membership surged to around 200 in 1986, highlighting the Chamber’s increasing importance in the town’s economic and
social fabric. In 1995, all previous festivities were combined into one multi-day event, Founders Weekend, run completely by the Chamber.
Today, the Chamber continues to face new challenges, like 2008 economic downturn and the 2019 pandemic but the organization remains steadfast, promoting Lee as a lively community and business hub.
Their Board of Directors represents a broad spectrum of local business leaders in healthcare, finance, food, hardware and hospitality. Recent influential members include the late Richard Lindsay, a key figure in Berkshire journalism and longtime Founders Day parade announcer, and local historian Phil Smith, known for his extensive coverage of Lee's history and his past role as director, currently serves as a board member of the Chamber. Smith is also the main source for the historical information used in this article.
Among other initiatives, Chamber is seeking new opportunities to make Lee a
more welcoming and supportive community. Notably, during the past 15 years, the Chamber beautified Lee’s Main Street with baskets overflowing with seasonal flowers through its Flower Basket Fund, and has awarded scholarships to Lee’s graduating seniors.
Their annual Founders Weekend brings together a range of different organizers and sponsors, many supporting excellent causes, including the Greener Gateway Committee, which aims to make Lee more environmentally-friendly, sustainable and attractive for residents, visitors and future generations. The Founders Weekend will be a zero-waste event, with 90% or more of materials used being reusable, recyclable or compostable.
Founders Weekend features the Taste of Lee food festival, the Founders Hometown Parade, a fireworks show, a classic car show and everything in between. For an event of this size, you need volunteers and donors willing to lend a hand. However, according to the Chamber’s Executive Director Kathy DeVarennes, who has lived in Lee for 36 years, helping out is just part of Lee’s community spirit.
“Everybody's very kind, helpful and welcoming. Lee is a quintessential small town where everybody knows and helps each other,” said DeVarennes. “I have been so overwhelmed by the amount of support from the townspeople. Whether it be the flower fund drive or seeking volunteers to help in a town clean-up, the residents of Lee are always willing to help."
Visit the Lee Founders Weekend, Friday, September 20 – Sunday, September 22. For more information, visit https://leechamber. org/festivals/founders-weekend/.

Film through a civic lens
BY ELLEN SPEAR BerkshiresWeek
If you’ve been thinking about getting more involved in your community, or puzzling over what you can do about the state of the world, engaging with local civic leaders and seeing new ideas presented on the screen may hold some answers for you.
Just in time to join the fall election frenzy, Images Cinema in Williamstown is offering “Civic Cinema,” a series of three films that address how we might get better at talking to one another and problem solving to improve our world. We’re told the films are pragmatic and solutions-oriented, not dogmatic.
The evenings begin with an hour of schmoozing with representatives of local organizations working in this space, the screenings, then a talk-back with relevant community leaders.
Images staff says the series is non-partisan — you can leave your lawn signs at home. There will be no fundraising and there will be no partisan promotion of any candidates. The films and encounters are designed to support civil discussion with local civic leaders.
At each evening, the social hour starts at 6p.m. The film screenings are at 7 and around 8:45p.m. the talk-backs will begin. All films are presented free of charge.
Here are the films and dates:
bad faith
Monday, Sept. 23
Bad Faith examines how Christian Nationalist leaders have spread fear and anger, distorting political issues into Biblical battles between good and evil. Some believe the Christian Nationalists have succeeded in taking over the hearts and minds of some politicians, turning them into powerful weapons to demolish democracy from within. Discover the origins of this organized grasp for power and the grassroots coalition of secular and interfaith leaders bravely confronting the forces they believe are threatening democracy.
join or die
Monday, Sept. 30 (pictured above)
Follow the story of America’s civic unraveling through the journey of legendary social scientist Robert Putnam, whose groundbreaking research for his book, “Bowling Alone”, examining how America’s decades-long decline in community connections could hold the answers to our democracy’s present crisis. Flanked by influential fans and scholars — from Hillary Clinton, Pete Buttigieg, and Surgeon General Vivek Murthy to Eddie Glaude Jr., Raj Chetty, and Priya Parker — as well as inspiring groups building community in neighborhoods across the country, join Bob as he explores three urgent civic questions: What makes democracy work? Why is American democracy in crisis? And, most importantly, What can we do about it?
