BerkshiresWeek

Suzanne Vega at the Mahaiwe

One of the leading performers and songwriters of the folk revival will perform in Great Barrington this week. Ticket details at berkshiresweek.com

The Berkshires knows how to do fall. The Fall Foliage Parade in North Adams kicks things off on Sunday, Oct. 6, replete with a parade themed “Berk du Soleil.” Then shift to Adams for Ramblefest, a weekend of happenings on Oct. 13 & 14, bringing on the music, food and fun to celebrate autumn in the Berkshires.

The street festival includes local brews, wines and cider, food, vendors, a campfire, pumpkin decorating and other family activities. You can even bring Fluffy on a leash. Berkshire Scenic Railway will be calling you all aboard for a scenic fall ride. The whole thing takes place rain or shine from noon to 5 p.m. Jack Waldheim starts the music performances off at noon.

Then you can cap off the long weekend at the Greylock Ramble, when hundreds converge to hike up Mt. Greylock via the Cheshire Harbor Trail to enjoy the gorgeous views and get a certificate when you reach the summit.

Naumkeag’s extraordinary Pumpkin Festival continues with nightly spooky displays of carved pumpkins throughout the gardens, and Berkshire Pride is planning “Prideoween”, an evening of heroes and villains at the Stationery Factory in Dalton on Oct. 11.

You can warm up for Halloween at Bidwell House in Monterey. On Oct. 9 & 10. They’re planning “Scary Stories Around the Fire.” The author of “Ghosts of the Berkshires,” Robert Oakes, reads colonial ghost stories including “The Ghost of Green River.” It all happens outside by a fire from 7 — 9 p.m. on Saturday and from 4 — 6 p.m. on Sunday. The Bidwell House folks suggest the stories are best for those 12 and up. Cider and donuts are part of the deal. Bwa ha ha! Berkshire Botanical Garden’s annual Harvest Festival, happens on Oct. 12 & 13 in Stockbridge. It’s the 90th birthday of the 24-acre botanical garden and they are planning to celebrate in style. For the kids, there will be pony rides, a haunted house, a hay maze and hay jump, and even a cider press. Live music will be provided by mainstays Wanda Houston, Katherine Winston and more.

You can get the jump on holiday shopping at craft vendor booths, or pick up a plant, thrift at the pop-up shop, or get something to eat. The garden is planning a botanical bakery serving sweets, chili and soup, a beer garden and food trucks. Or you can just enjoy the gorgeous grounds as the gardens show off their fall color.

there’s more to see at BERKSHIRESWEEK.COM

It’s all fall now

Jiminy Peak in Hancock is offering 13 Nights — scary fun on the mountain from basement tours, night rides to the summit where who knows what you’ll encounter and mountain coaster rides through the spooky night woods. On the other side of the mountain, Hancock Shaker Village is offering up the Pumpkin Extravaganza on Oct. 19. You’re invited to come in costume that day to trick-or-treat through the Village, meet the Garden Witch, carve a pumpkin, and celebrate like a Shaker.

If you’re already planning your Halloween costume, there are plenty of places to wear it this year. The City of Pittsfield is mounting the city’s Halloween

Parade on Friday, Oct. 25 beginning at 7 p.m. on Tyler Street.

“Spooky Hollywood” is the

theme and community groups will enter floats related to their favorite Halloween movie. Trick

Greylock, when you finish the Greylock Ramble to the summit, you’re rewarded with commanding views and a certificate. Below left: A scene from last year’s Pittsfield Halloween Parade.

or Treat time for the city is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 31 from 5:30 — 7 p.m. rain or shine. You’re advised to leave an exterior light on if you’re a Halloween-friendly house.

Boosquet Halloween Bash is another option for more adult entertainment. From 7 — 11 p.m. on Oct. 26, head to Bousquet Mountain in Pittsfield for a 21and-older evening including live music and dancing, a photo booth so you can remember your costume, a costume contest, a fire show on the mountain, munchies and libations. One of the best things to do is go leaf peeping. We’ve got suggestions for car rides, bike rides and hikes. Go to berkshiresweek. com for maps, recommendations and other fall events to enjoy.
