Making your holiday plans?

Check out some of our favorite Berkshire holiday events for the whole family

There’s been barely enough time to put away your Halloween costume, we know, but the Berkshires are gearing up for the holidays. Annual light shows, concerts, special art exhibits, strolls and opportunities to shop and shop some more are happening throughout the county. Here’s a compendium of some of our favorites. Tickets are a must for many of the events, so make your plans early. These are great things to go to with your out-of-town relatives and friends.

a christmas carol

Unicorn Theater, Stockbridge, Dec. 5-22

Take the family to Victorian England without leaving the county for Charles Dickens’ timeless tale of Ebenezer Scroog, just in time for the holidays. There will be music throughout, and the annual uttering of Tiny Tim’s famous line.

stockbridge main street at christmas

Dec. 8, noon-2 p.m.

Go back to a time that existed only in our imaginations as the town recreates Norman Rockwell’s iconic painting, “Stockbridge Main Street at Christmas.” Cars of the 1950s will line the streets, there will be photo ops with “Norman,” Victorian carolers, shopping up and down the street, face painting, holiday crafts and, of course, the jolly fat man and his wife will be there.

winterlights

Naumkeag, Stockbridge, Nov. 29-Jan. 4, 2025

This one sets a high standard for other outdoor light shows in the area, in our estimation. It’s an outdoor walk through twinkly light displays that will get you in the holiday spirit. Getting tickets in advance is a must, and there’s

park. It’s a

mutts gone nuts: santa paws

Colonial Theatre, Pittsfield, Dec. 15 at 2 p.m.

This extravaganza features talented four-legged performers doing funny dog tricks. Holiday music accompanies. Some of the pup-formers you’ll see include a Canada’s Got Talent Finalist, a two-time world champion disc dog, a six-pound Pomeranian Pikachu mix and others who will enchant your whole family.

nightwood

The Mount, Lenox, Nov. 22-Jan. 4

This light display on the grounds of Edith Wharton’s estate adds music and a bit of theater to the outdoor light show experience. There will be seven scenes aimed at creating wow moments for you and your friends. You can get something to eat and a craft cocktail under outdoor heaters to warm up after your walk. The whole stroll is about a mile.

holiday marketplace and gallery of wreaths

Berkshire Botanical Garden, Stockbridge, Dec. 6-8

Do some serious shopping for greenery at the “Gallery of Wreaths,” which previews on Friday, Dec. 6 from 5-7 p.m. with a party attached. The Holiday Marketplace is Saturday and Sunday, where you can pick up one of the unique designer-created wreaths, gift items and much more.

selected shorts

Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center, Great Barrington, Dec. 14, 1 p.m. Holiday time is story time, and the folks at Selected Shorts pick some of the best. Enjoy narration by Jane Curtin of Saturday Night Live fame; Joanna Gleason, who won a Tony for her star turn in “Into the Woods”; Michel Gill from “The Gilded Age” and Bhavesh Patel, who you may remember from “Madame Secretary” or “The Blacklist.”

exhibit opening and holiday reception

Norman Rockwell Museum, Stockbridge, Dec. 6, 5-7 p.m.

For a bit of holiday nostalgia, check out the party and the illustrations that celebrate light as the days get darker. The work of St. Norman, Wyeth, Parrish and others will be on display. There will be holiday food and drink.
