4places to see spectacular holiday light shows
BY ELLEN SPEAR BerkshiresWeek
It’s the season of lights. The Berkshires has what’s needed to get you and the relatives off the couch and in a holiday mood. Listed here are light shows and some uniquely Berkshires celebrations. This is the year to get out and about. Some of the events require advance registration and tickets so get your spot early.
1. nightwood at the mount
2 Plunkett St., Lenox Weekends and selected weekday evenings through Jan. 4, 5-8 p.m.
Bundle up and take the family through gardens of wonder and delight at Edith Wharton’s home and grounds. The folks at The Mount have put together an immersive sound and light experience. The route is just shy of a mile, and you’re invited to wander the woods and gardens that will get you in the holiday mood and up your “wow” count considerably. There’s even a NightWood cafe where you can snuggle up to a space heater and get some hot chocolate and cider (both child and adult versions), and some snacks.
2.
winterlights at naumkeag
5 Prospect Hill Road, Stockbridge Through Jan. 4, Wednesday-Sunday, 4:30-9 p.m.
Plan to get your tickets for Winterlights at Naumkeag. As the Pumpkin Fest is to Halloween, Winterlights is to the December holidays of light. It’s an outdoor holiday stroll with displays made up of thousands of holiday lights — more than even that neighbor across the street puts on his house. There is also music and food. It’s a whole thing for where to park and to take the shuttles into the festivities, so it’s good to plan early.
3. berkshire museum festival of trees
39 South St., Pittsfield Through Jan. 5
The much anticipated annual Festival of Trees has a watery theme this year. “Aquatica” is a nod to the improvements the institution is making to its aquarium. Blub blub.
4. radiant nights at hancock shaker village
1843 W. Housatonic St., Pittsfield Saturday-Dec. 31, 5-8 p.m.

A new way of seeing familiar places at The Clark
A new take on the approach of landscape painters John Constable and Claude Monet is on the walls at the Clark Art Institute. Cuban-American photographer Abelardo Morell has transformed iconic garden scenes through the use of a tent/camera. “Abellardo Morell: In the Company of Monet and Constable” will be on view through Feb. 17, 2025.
Not quite paintings, not quite photographs, Morell “...breathes new life into scenes that have become so closely associated with the works of artists who lived more than a century before him,” said Olivier Meslay, the Hardymon Director of the Clark in a press release. The exhibition is divided into two parts — one examining places Constable painted, the other Monet’s familiar scenes. Morell’s largescale photographs memorialize the places the two landscape painters haunted, but his lens combines the broad views with what’s happening on the ground. The work reveals the detail of leaves, dirt, rocks and other things under foot along with the grand vistas and colors Constable and Monet made famous.
Morell makes the images by using a tent/ camera of his own design that nods to the principles of the camera obscura and combines the pinhole technique with today’s technology. This allows him to create the big scenes with the very small details simultaneously, capturing the moment in big and small ways for the viewer. Morell asks us to consider the relationship between painting and photography, especially relevant in this world of emerging AI and its ability to create realms that never existed.
Morell’s tent/camera is a platform holding two devices. One is a prism with a lens attached, called a diopter, which acts like a periscope projecting an image of the nearby landscape on the ground below. The second device is a digital camera looking straight down and focused on the ground. A picture made with the tent/camera shows both the granular details of the ground and a projected vista of the landscape, giving the overall image an illusion of being a painting. The camera is connected to a laptop outside the tent which allows the artist to adjust the image, connecting the digital and analog realms.

Staying hydrated to reduce the risk for heat illness is imperative. Water will almost always help people remain hydrated even when working in the heat, but eating regular meals can also help prevent heat illness by replacing salt lost through sweat, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The CDC advises against consuming energy drinks and alcohol when spending time in the hot sun. Many energy drinks contain more caffeine than standard servings of coffee, tea and soft drinks, and excessive caffeine consumption can contribute to dehydration. The CDC also reports that drinking alcohol within 24 hours of working in the heat can increase the risk of heat illness.
