What makes mindfulness so popular now? I have come to realize over the 25 years of trying to live as mindful as I can that this question has many answers depending on how one experiences it. Mindfulness is something that the majority of us can identify with… we all

want to be less stressed, feel healthy, enjoy peaceful feelings and have time to relax. We like to have enjoyable relationships and learn how to control our emotions. But what I have witnessed in clients that come for counseling is that they

tion on your abdomen and feel the rising of the inbreath and the lowering of the outbreath. Continue to focus on breathing in peaceful healing energy and breathing out any discomfort, tension or pain. When you notice that the mind has taken you on some other thought, simply note that and bring your attention back to the breath. What this is doing for you is helping you to stop the unaware activity of stressful thoughts and feelings that are the cause of our reactions to the stressors in our life. By noticing these negative thought processes, we can take back our control of what we actually focus our thoughts on. This is the key to mindfulness; to use nonjudgmental awareness to become aware of what we are thinking right now and decide if that is what we want to really be thinking about. Much of the time our minds

simply do not know where to begin. The answer to that is right here right now. By simply bringing your awareness/attention to the sensation of breathing slow and deep for 6 cycles of breath in and out and feeling where that is happening in the body we can elicit a response in the brain called the “relaxation response”. Then by simply letting the breath continue to be slow and deep on its own and focusing our thought we can go into a very deep state of relaxation and clarity of mind. The relaxation response allows us to slow down and let a calmness come over our mind and body. The breath is always with us and therefore the conscious technique of paying attention in that moment to the sensation of simply breathing is almost too simple for us to believe it can actually help. But you should try it. Stop right now and simply focus your atten-

ing mindful attitudes such as acceptance, non-judgement, gratitude, patience, letting go and compassion; moments become easier to be in. Life becomes interesting and less stressed. We begin to slow down, relax, and realize that by doing these techniques and using these attitudes, we become more productive. We have healthy, creative energy, appreciate life, and start to feel a sense of self-compassion. Self-compassion along with mindfulness is being noticed by the scientific community. Over the last 10 years there has been an “explosion of research” into this attribute. Those that treat themselves like they would their best friends are more apt to have greater happiness, life satisfaction and motivation, physical health, better relationships, and less depression and anxiety. They also have the resilience needed to cope with stressful life events such as, health crisis, academic failure, divorce, and even combat trauma. When we are mindful of our struggle and respond to ourselves with compassion, kindness and support in times of difficulty, things start to change. Other areas of our society

are experiencing the gifts of mindfulness because it is beneficial for all ages. Mindfulness programs are now being taught to children as young as 5 years old in schools across the country, including our town of Bennington and surroundings areas! Physicians, counselors, teachers and others interested in changing the perspectives of our future leaders are now studying about mindfulness and its many benefits. Rise Vt. is presenting grants to the schools in Bennington County so that our younger generations can learn and pass this on to the next. Also, most insurance companies now cover group and individual sessions in Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR). Sound a little too good to be true? Well, attributes like these don’t come without some change and commitment. But with a willingness to enable yourself to be open minded, to practice and edu-

cate yourself, it is a doable task and well worth the effort! Many people are now talking about and doing the actions that they need to live a healthy, compassionate and grateful life. Mindfulness is popular because they are telling their stories and people are listening. All you need is a trained counselor to help you get started on your journey of a lifetime. As my trainer Jon Kabat-Zinn says, “If you’re breathing there is a lot more right with you than wrong.” We need to take responsibility for our own health because we are the only ones that can! — Deborah Lewis, M.A., LCMHC, RYT Mindful Paths Counseling and Wellness Center Bennington and Manchester Offices deb@mindfulpaths.net www.mindfulpaths.net (802) 558-1315

are on “auto-pilot” and we are not aware that we have a choice to change those stressful perceptions and reactions. Living mindfully helps us realize that there are different ways of perceiving situations, relationships and other stressors that help us to respond in different ways to them. This is turn can build up our self-confidence, and feel that we are more in control of our thoughts, feelings and behaviors. Mindfulness is a way of living in this very moment with our own thoughts, feelings and behaviors and being able to let go of the negative self-talk, the negative judgements and out of control negative reactions to what is stressing us out. It is living with a purpose, yet not striving and wishing things were different. Mindfulness is having appreciation of this present moment and being aware of the opportunities that are here right now. When we think back to our best moments, we remember them because we were mindful of those particular thoughts and the feelings while we were experiencing them. So why not make more of these moments? By being right here, right now. By us-

BodyMind Integration Motivating your inherent healing potential through Biodynamic CranioSacral Therapy and Shamanic Journey Therapy Healing is a journey. It is a wonderful adventure through the complex tapestry of our mind, body and spirit. Biodynamic CranioSacral Therapy works directly with the multiple threads of human functioning, the body's inherent healing process and the experience of the healing journey. On a deeper level, Biodynamic CranioSacral Therapy explores the inner meaning and the colors and shapes held within our life experiences. Our state of health is a reflection of all of our experiences - positive and negative, and all of our thoughts and emotions that have been woven into the fabric of who we are today. This complex web is held in place by energetic forces, because life begins and ends with energy. Our ancient ancestors viewed the world as a unified and balanced whole rich with seen and unseen forces and energies. To them plants, trees, animals, insects, fish,

The BennHHP Committee would like to say a special thank you to our treasurer and leader, Lindy Lynch. Many already know the impact that she has on our community, and the countless years of hard work that she has dedicated to creating the foundations for events such as our fair for the Bennington community. Lindy has been fighting numerous health battles over the past few years, including a current fight against cancer, but her strength and perseverance continue to triumph above anything. We are constantly grateful to have her experience, friendship, and spirit guiding our mission. Thank you, Lindy! -MIKAELA & THE COMMITTEE

the sun, the moon and the stars and all that they could see with their eyes and feel with their senses vibrated to and with the song of the creator. Our ancient ancestors watched, listened, and tuned into these vibrations gaining insight and knowledge of their world. This is what a Biodynamic CranioSacral Therapist does. We tune into the Breath of Life or the Universal Energy that animates our bodies. We wait and listen, sense and see the energetic web and where the webbing has become bound or frayed. The therapist offers expertise and experience in unbinding and freeing energy and illness. We offer the time, place and quiet so that your built in healing wisdom can unfold and express itself by correcting, strengthening and releasing imbalances. Biodynamic CranioSacral Therapy offers a creative environment for healing to unravel and unfold in its own unique way.

Shamanic Journey Therapy uses ancient healing techniques and the chakra energy system. Chakras are energetic centers of consciousness. All of our experiences and their accompanying thoughts and emotions live within the chakra system. Karma also has a home here. Through Shamanic Journey Therapy, the practitioner leads the seeker along the intricate and delicate energetic threads of their life's journey - unraveling and rebalancing each of the chakras as health is restored. Weaving these techniques together creates a tapestry of healing work from which magic can happen. Janet Sleigh is a certified Biodynamic CranioSacral Therapist and a Shamanic Journey Therapist with practices in Bennington and Hoosick Falls. You can contact her at 802-688-3208.

Jophiel’s Beauty & Wellness is a unique home-based business located Shaftsbury, Vt. For the past 35 years, Laurie has been on a path that has evolved from a hair salon owner-operator to include health and wellness. She was introduced to mindful based meditation in 1996, enrolling in an eightweek stress reduction class which impacted and shifted her perspective and ultimately the direction in her life. Laurie pursued and received certifications in the following complementary

therapies while working and raising her three children: reflexology, massage therapy and energy work. In 2016 she graduated from the Institute for Integrative Nutrition and recently became a certified yoga instructor. Laurie's approach provides coaching which encompasses new holistic health concepts. She believes that life is a journey, and each experience brings us closer to our next dream by creating a vision and goal. Also, she understands life is not without challenges. Whether

they are positive or negative, they do have an impact on how we feel every day. Laurie recognizes how much energy is lost when experiencing difficulties, and the importance of self care while dealing with difficulties related to work, relationship or health. She has come to understand this perspective with her own personal life. Developing self awareness, learning patience, self care and being grateful helps you through challenges that may arise. Harnessing new health concepts will improve your life.

As your Health Coach, Laurie will guide and mentor you. She will empower you and provide on-going support and guidance as you make sustainable lifestyle choices. She will not prescribe one diet or one way of living. Rather she will help you set goals, developing a deeper understanding of food and lifestyle choices to improve your health and wellness. With Laurie's program you will receive personalized attention, a six-month program, health history, meeting twice a month, grocery

store tour, pantry makeover, simple recipes and information about fermented foods and cooking methods. Working together with the concept of primary food (lifestyle) and secondary food (food you eat), you will discover your bio-individual approach.
