President’s Message Michael L. Mercier
“That was a hot one!” Dear USPTA New England Membership, We’ve had an incredibly successful year so far, with many big events and tournaments. In May we held our combined convention with USPTA Eastern at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows Corona Park. In June, we hosted the Grass Court Championships at the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, RI, that boasted $5,000 in prize money. Our Tennis Across America program drew hundreds of participants at this summer's Dell Technologies Hall of Fame Open in Newport, RI, and the Connecticut Open in New Haven, CT. As always, the USPTA World Convention in August was a big bash in NYC, with education and networking opportunities on and off the court. The next three World Conventions will be in Las Vegas (2019), New Orleans (2020), and Orlando (2021). In addition to these showcase events, we've hosted nearly a dozen certification and testing events all over New England throughout the year. On a personal note, my family and I would like to thank everyone who a t t e n d e d t h e c e re m o n y a t t h e International Tennis Hall of Fame this June where I was presented with the USTA New England Gardner Ward Chase Award for lifetime achievement. The USPTA NE board and state presidents are here to help you advance your career as a tennis professional. We also have many opportunities for you to help grow the tennis community in New England. Our website is updated regularly with the latest information on upcoming conferences, special events, and programs for continuing education and engagement. Feel free to reach out to me with any questions regarding our association, and I look forward to seeing you soon at one of our many ongoing events throughout New England. S c o t t S m i t h s a y s f a re w e l l t o V i n e y a rd Yo u t h Te n n i s Longtime tennis pro at the Vineyard Youth Te n n i s C e n t e r o n Martha’s Vineyard has left his position as Executive Director after 12 years. Smith was very active in the New England division after coming to us from the Tampa Florida area. Smith is credited for taking over a fledgling program and turning into one of the most recognized programs in the northeast. The local high school has won 6 state championships with all of the kid training at the Youth tennis center. Smith also founded the MV flex League, Martha's Vineyard Pro Am and the Martha’s Vineyard Community Tennis Association (CTA).
His program was featured twice on the Tennis Channel and he brought in numerous former tennis professionals such as Jimmy Arias, Tim Mayotte, Todd Martin, Gigi Fernandez, Katrina Adams and the Jensen Brothers for exhibitions and clinics. Tennis Hall of Fame coach Nick Bollettieri visited the program three times along with USTA Director of Player of Development Martin Blackman. Vineyard Youth Tennis is the middle of restructuring as its longtime benefactor has pulled his funding. They will now try operating on private donations. Smith has accepted a position at Squire Creek Country Club in Choudrant, Louisiana. Squire Creek has the number 1 rated golf course in Louisiana along with a beautiful tennis center, fitness and pool area and three dining areas. Smith has started his new position as of September 1st. “I have greatly enjoyed my time here in New England and it has been nice to be around such great USPTA professionals." said Smith.

His love of the game of tennis from then on began to flourish. He earned a tennis scholarship to the University of Notre Dame and after college, became ranked No. 11 on the US rankings along with capturing the men’s singles title at the Canadian Championships in 1947. Getting to know Patricio… What made you decide to become a tester?
“I wanted to give back and help applicants learn and have a great experience. Testers are usually the first USPTA person that applicants meet. A big part of how they'll feel and in interact with the organization will be based on their experience during testing.”
What do you consider the most rewarding part of being a tester?
“Getting to meet so many pros and learning from them.”
How many people have you tested by now?
“I don't have the exact number. In 2017 I tested over 40 applicants in tennis and a couple more in paddle. I'll guess that I am closing in 150 between both sports by now.”
Even though we do not know all the details yet, but how to you feel about the provisional accreditation by the USTA, resulting in a more comprehensive certification process?
“I'm curious about the details. Hard to tell. I hope that when 2020 comes membership numbers don't get affected by the new requirements. It will be a big change for sure.”

In fall 2017, I was elected to Vice President on the USPTA New England Board of Directors, and most recently, I became the Chair of the USPTA New England Membership Committee. Since I started my position on the Board last fall, I have been eager to increase our membership. My hope is to add and retain as many members as possible during my tenure. Going forward, and working in partnership with USPTA National, I plan to educate USPTA New England members on the latest National Initiative, called AIM (Admiring, Inviting and Mentoring). As part of this program, the USPTA is offering a $50 discount on annual dues for each individual a USPTA member recruits to become a certified USPTA professional, and a $24.50 discount for each individual a USPTA member recruits to become a School Coach. So let's start AIM-ing! Further, I have started making phone calls and/or emailing current members who are Inactive, Dropped or Suspended to encourage them to stay active in the USPTA and to help them understand the true value of a USPTA membership. I believe these efforts in making personal connections will assist in retaining members. Finally, with regards to Diversity and Inclusion, the USPTA plans to host a panel discussion in the fall or winter on "Coaching Women in Tennis”. Please STAY TUNED for the date! As a USPTA Elite Professional, I am honored to be a part of an association with the highest standards in teaching tennis and look forward to promoting membership throughout New England.
Jennifer Callen Beveridge has been involved in tennis for as long as
she remembers! As a former WTA player and collegiate athlete competing for D1 powerhouse University of Virginia, she brings a wealth of playing experience to her coaching career. Certified as a USPTA Elite Professional, she formerly coached as Head Coach at Dartmouth, Head Coach at UNC/Chapel and Assistant Coach at Harvard. She is currently founder and president of Callen Tennis in Concord, MA

“Common Sense Strategy” By Lynn Miller USPTA Elite Professional While coaching at Wheaton College and other teams, I provided my players with a framework regarding how to think about singles strategy. It is an abbreviated version, but I think everyone will be able to follow the basic thought process. How I present and talk about singles strategy has changed over the years, but this version seems to work well with the players I have coached ranging between a 3.5 and 5.0 level. In conclusion, your options in singles are:
Singles Strategy in a nutshell: • If you can’t “outbaseline” the baseliner, TRY A DIFFERENT TACTIC. Don’t stay with a losing game plan. • Try changing the trajectory and or spin of your shots (hit deeper with more topspin or even some lower balls with more under spin). Hitting short angles is another option to try vs baseliners because they have to move inside the baseline to play the ball. • If you STILL can’t win from the baseline because your opponent can handle all spins, depths and different angles, come to the net, whether it is your preferred tactic or not.
a) “outbaseline” the baseliner, b) come to the net or 3) bring your opponent in and then lob or pass him/her. If none of the above works, you will most likely lose your match. Your opponent may just be a better player than you, but you need to find the tactic that your opponent likes the least while you are still in the match, then go back to basics at your next practice. Sometimes, players who dislike playing against certain tactics lose interest, confidence or the “fun” factor, and momentum can change should this happenwhich still gives you a chance to clinch the match.
• When coming in, consider changing the spin on your approach shot or approach to a different location (including the possibility of approaching down the middle) if you are being passed. Serve/volleying is another way to get to the net when you are serving, (especially if you can’t get to the net off of your opponent’s serve), thereby rushing your opponent and forcing him/her to make a good pass or lob. • If you’re losing points both when you stay back AND when you come to the net, bring in your opponent then pass or lob him/her. This is OFTEN most effective against good baseliners, but you must possess a good drop shot, slice and deep lob for this tactic to be successful.
Lynn Miller coached the men’s and women’s tennis teams at Wheaton College (MA) from 1980-2015. She also directed and was head coach for the annual Tennis Camp at Wheaton. Lynn was selected as NEWMAC Coach of the Year on several occasions. She has been inducted into the Plymouth State College (NH), Wheaton College, USTA/New England and the USPTA/New England Hall of Fame.

Te n n i s P r o g r a m m i n g by Patricio Misitrano USPTA Elite Professional What is tennis programming? In today’s tennis business world, if we want our club, academy, camp, resort or public park program or any other tennis program to be successful, it is key that we know what this means and that we include all the basics components in our programming offerings. Let’s start with the basics: Adult programs; Junior programs. Adult programs could be divided further: Women; Men; Co-ed. Junior programs could be divided into the following: 10 and under; 11-17 year olds. The next way to organize a junior program is to divide it into high performance and recreational. Programs could also be divided into age groups and abilities. Here we list all the “must have” of all tennis and racquets programming: Start and an end; Clear and straightforward pricing; Make-up policy; Cancellation policy; Signup procedures. “Must have a start and an end.” All programs should specify when they start and when they end. It should also specify days of the week and starting and ending time. “Clear and straightforward pricing.” How much does it cost? Are there any discounts for singing up for multiple days? How about discounts for siblings? The student/pro ratio must also be part of the pricing. “Make-up policy”. What happens if weather or other factors cancel the program? Can players make-up a lesson if they missed it? Is there a specific day, week or time when lessons can be made-up? What is considered an acceptable reason to have missed a lesson?
“Cancellation-policy”. When can players cancel? Is there a deadline to cancel without any penalties or players can cancel at any time? Most successful programs will have a deadline that participants can cancel without any penalties and there is another deadline that participants can cancel and receive a percentage of the prepaid amount back. Indoor programs usually have a more strict cancellation policy. “Sign-up procedures”. There are different ways players can sign-up for programs: Online on the club’s website, online on a third party provider, via e-mail, by phone, in person, by mail. These methods have their pros and cons. All efforts should be made to make the sign-up process as easy and convenient as possible while at the same time be as efficient as possible. Keeping track of sign-ups online will always provide a back-up with specific details of when someone has committed to participate in a program. The last two key components of programming are the staff and the on-court program itself. Just like we emphasized and tried to be very detailed when we advertised and promoted our programs, we should also be as specific as possible to list which members of the staff will be teaching which groups. What the plan is for on court drills, match play, and/or supervised play? Does it change from pre-season to during competition to off season? The short answer is yes. We will analyze it in details at a later time.

Lisa led a group of tennis instructors in the parade, volleying a red ball over a banner to support tennis in the state of Maine. After the parade, her team set up red ball nets in the grass at Deering Oaks Park for the Portland Pride celebration. Kids and adults joined together for an amazing afternoon of tennis, fun, and support of the LGBTQIA community.

National Update By Bill Mountford USPTA Elite Professional
Greetings fellow New Englanders! President Mercier asked that I share a brief update from the National Board for this edition of Yankee Prose. I will focus on the exclusive, but provisional, accreditation that the USTA has bestowed upon the USPTA. The USTA has made it their mission to increase - or improve standards of introducing, teaching, and coaching tennis in this country, and that is why they offered accreditation standards to any organization that applied. The terms were strict, as they should be, and no other coaching body or trade association managed to earn this distinction. There is confidence that this will be a significant game-changer for our sport, and the USPTA specifically, because it will begin to shape the employment opportunities for certified teaching professionals. Heretofore, this has never been an expectation, let alone a requirement, for Clubs and facilities, and this action moves us closer to that ideal. Among the deal points listed in our USPTA / USTA Memo of Understanding document, there is the defined expectation that USTA Member Orgs (with 2+ courts) must employ certified pros from an accredited body. Again, that distinction belongs solely to the USPTA at this stage - so it will be beneficial to our existing members, as well as attractive to prospective new members. It should also shape a more defined career path for those wishing to enter into our profession and the industry. I am optimistic, but this deal has yet to be finalized. Mike Mercier, Chris Stevens, and Hans Romer were involved in these discussions during the recent USPTA Executive Committee meetings in New York. I certainly welcome any and all direct feedback to whmountford@aol.com. Meanwhile, congrats to Mike Mercier, his New England Board, and all of our members for consistently "raising the standards!"
All the best,
Bill Mountford New Canaan, CT USPTA National Vice President

Update on USPTA New England “Bylaws and Standard Operating Procedures” In an effort to standardize the way the USPTA operates across all of its divisions, the National Board and Executive Committee have voted to have the individual Divisions adopt a “Model” set of bylaws. For New England, these new bylaws went into effect in early August. The New England Bylaws and Standard Operating Procedures Committee – which consists of Mike Kolendo (Chair), Steven O’Connell (Past President), Nancy Lally (Secretary), and Patrick LaSalle (RI State President) – has been has been hard at work reviewing the new document and has made recommendations for modifications that are specific to our Division. Those recommendations were approved by our New England Board of Officers and are now in the hands of National’s legal counsel for review. Until our proposed changes are reviewed and approved, the Model bylaws will be in effect. Since they differ somewhat from how we’ve done business in the past, the Committee believes it’s important to give our members a chance to look them over. You can find them at the very end of this newsletter. Please feel free to reach out to any on our Committee if you have any thoughts, concerns, or questions. Once everything is finalized, the updated version will be posted on the USPTA New England website.
