From the CEO Kia ora, I hope you and your family are safe and well. Like last year, 2021 has thrown all of us the “Lockdown Covid Curveball” with the latest Delta outbreak. This time around, although we do have more of an idea of what to expect, it feels considerably more difficult, especially around individual wellbeing. Hopefully, with high vaccination rates and decreasing infections, 2022 will be a year where we, as Kiwis, enjoy our lives without these interruptions. Thankfully from a business perspective, modern technologies enable us to continue to support you, our customers. I want to take the opportunity to thank all of our amazing customers for their kind words regarding the excellent work our team have been doing during the latest lockdown. This has been a huge morale booster for our teams. Another “Covid Curveball” affecting us all is the global supply chains slowing to a crawl. Many industries have been affected, ICT being just one. Typically, we can order computer hardware from our distributors and have it delivered to schools within a fortnight. Currently in 2021, we have up to four-month delays. I cannot emphasise enough if you are planning on procuring and deploying anything ICT related for your school, sign it off and place your order now, else you run a very high risk of not having it in Term 1, 2022. Another thing that should be at the forefront of everyone’s mind is reviewing and maintaining your school network security. Ransomware and denial of service attacks on schools are very real and very prevalent of late. Therefore, we have developed a 2-day security exercise programme (NSAE) to check your school for technical issues, evaluate your team, and educate them on best practices. Find the programme details on page 13. Lastly, on a more positive note, New Era Technology continues to be the eminent ICT Partner in Education across NZ, and as such, I would like to take the opportunity to welcome the following schools to the New Era family. We are very proud to be associated with these schools, and look forward to working alongside them as their trusted, qualified ICT partner. • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

What’s New The New Era Technology business is growing across New Zealand, and also globally. This is a fantastic opportunity for our team to learn new skills, leverage the expertise of other team members and ultimately give our customers a better, all rounded service.
A key addition to the New Zealand team is the Unified Collaboration (UC) division. Our New Era Technology UC team are experts in the design, implementation and management of all things Audio-Visual (AV) and UC related.
Key projects the team have recently been involved in include: Zespri HQ, Google HQ, Ministry of Education Matauranga House, Rabobank HQ, Ministry of Primary Industries, Vodafone HQ, Massey University and Burwood Hospital Spinal Unit. From an education perspective, we will be working with the team to provide AV and UC solutions and services that are specific to primary and secondary education. This may include systems and room integration for classrooms, school halls and auditoriums or the implementation of high definition video conferencing solutions which have been crucial to businesses of all types over the last few months.
Conferences
2021 has seen lots of different things happening at New Era Technology. We are excited to share with you some of the things we have been up to. Welcoming the UC Division
We love attending conferences as it gives us an opportunity to connect with you, our customers.
Our most recent conferences were the School Business Managers Conference and the National Association of Deputy and Associates Principals Conference.
Workshops and Team Building
This year New Era staff in various regions across New Zealand have been participating in feedback workshops to help shape how we can do things better in the future. This process is vital to ensure that all our staff are invested in how we do things and most importantly, give them a mechanism to have a voice. This will continue over the coming months with the remainder of the regions. Additionally, we took the opportunity to visit our data centre in central Auckland and have a bit of team fun. 4

The Night Before Christmas In this editorial, Tony Gilbert discusses the importance of ordering essential hardware requirements as soon as possible to ensure your school has the best chance of getting what you need for the coming year. With the COVID-19 global pandemic still having significant impacts on supply and shipping, it has never been more urgent to “get your order in early”. It was the night before Christmas, and all through the school, things were quiet. Well, you would hope so, wouldn’t you?
What you don’t want is for it to be quiet at the start of the following year when things are ramping up for the arrival of students.
Strong school leadership understands the importance of planning. Just like you don’t wait until the night before Christmas to do your shopping, schools must be thinking about what they will need well before the year begins. Avoiding last-minute purchasing has never been so important in light of the ongoing global situation. The following are a few key points about why this is happening and other information you should consider when making your decisions. We are little and quite a way away.
Compared to large markets like North America and Asia, the relative size and buying quantities in New Zealand are small; even our cousins in Australia purchase, by volume, significantly more hardware and software products than we do. So, despite New Zealand educators having great use of technology, our size and physical geography means that sometimes suppliers will drop us down the priority list. But, don’t feel disheartened completely! We have some fantastic people and partners working hard in New Zealand who go above and beyond to get you what you need - it is fair to say we punch well above our weight on this. We need to know as soon as possible what it is you need!

Consumer retail is not the same as commercial, and neither are the numbers.
It can be easy to think - “Hey, there are heaps of computers in the shops. There must be plenty around”. Firstly, the components of the models available in the shops are suited for everyday home use, not for a commercial or school environment. Just like you wouldn’t put a jungle gym built for a backyard into a school playground as it wouldn’t last very long, you need to ensure that the computers and hardware you are purchasing for your school are suited to the purpose you are buying it. Secondly, the volume required of commercial hardware is entirely different. For example, you might purchase a computer every few years at home, whereas schools may be buying hundreds every year. Volume has a massive impact upon supply, so having an accurate forecast is essential (a bit like trying to predict your roll when timetabling). Don’t substitute for quality.
Often retailers are open ‘till the very last minute before Christmas day for those that may not have had the chance or motivation to get organised. Unfortunately, this can mean that the “genuine article” that you or even your kid has been craving is well and truly out-of-stock. You might figure that a cheap knock-off will be fine, but between the disappointment on their face and the 30 minutes it takes to break, you will wish you had purchased the quality item much, much earlier.
The same can happen with essential technology. Again, you don’t want to be in a situation where you compromise quality so that you have something. Therefore, you may end up paying more for inferior equipment plus potentially needing to replace it earlier than you should.
Additionally, it might not do what it needs to do, which will only breed frustration. Also, there are indeed “dodgy dealers” out there who “Frankenstein” equipment together that may look OK on the surface but will have non-genuine parts affecting performance and causing significant headaches with warranty and support issues. There are lots of points in the supply chain.
So, a wee bit of myth-busting here - not all things are made in the same place, particularly technology. Take your friendly All-in-One computer, for example. Not only are different components such as the RAM, camera and chassis potentially all manufactured thousands of miles from each other, but the supply routes to get them to where they are assembled all vary as well! Further, each region requires unique power supplies, plus there are other disruptors, like a lack of cardboard boxes due to flooding! Do you care about how this logistical mission comes about? No, and you probably shouldn’t, but it does illustrate the complexity of it all and that the sooner you order, the more likely you are to get what you want when you want it. The New Era Technology team is here to support you in ensuring that you have the tools you need to support your school’s priorities. So get in touch now to let us help you.

Why School Network Security Matters Proactively managing your school’s network security is of critical importance. Why? Because internationally, an increase in cyberattacks targeting schools has been reported. There’s the risk of losing sensitive student and staff data, potential disruptions to learning, and of course, reputational risk. Schools are at risk of attacks from online criminals and hackers who tend to target the education sector because there’s not the same level of security as at most private enterprises. Educational institutions are increasingly targeted because criminals realise they have limited cybersecurity measures in place, managed by small IT teams with limited resources, as well as access to a wide array of personal information, including financial data, for students and parents.
But while we might think of nefarious hackers being the biggest cybersecurity risk, the truth is that most data breaches are caused by employee negligence and human error. Some of the common poor security practices include:
• Leaving computers unlocked and unattended • Writing passwords on pieces of paper and leaving them unsecured instead of a digital password manager • People falling victim to phishing attacks and unknowingly being tricked into providing data to criminals • A lack of knowledge about how to avoid a breach – and what to do if a mistake is made.
With schools across the globe, including New Zealand, needing to rapidly pivot to remote learning models as part of the COVID-19 pandemic response, education cybersecurity is more in the spotlight than ever. The potential risk of a cyberattack further disrupting the education of children is very real.
What can your school do? There are some core foundations that should be at the heart of every school’s cybersecurity practices. The non-negotiables are:
• Across the board use of anti-virus and anti-malware solutions • Regular staff training sessions on security risks and how to respond • Awareness training on phishing attacks and how to spot them to avoid giving up personal information of staff and students • Consistent habits for software configuration, updates and patch management • Rigourous password policies with non-dictionary words using a mix of lowercase and uppercase letters, numbers and symbols • Multi-factor authentication, especially for remote access to the school network • Tiered levels of access based on the minimum level of access people need to do their job.
As well as these base practices, New Era Technology has especially designed a solution for schools to examine, monitor and enhance security practices. Our Network Security Assessment Exercise (NSAE) is a short, targeted program of work to help your school’s leadership and board to quickly and easily improve your network security.
NSAE examines key technical security aspects of the school’s network, as well as revising and testing staff competency on cybersecurity foundations and practices. Once the assessment is complete, you’ll be provided with a clear and concise series of reports that: • Pinpoint security improvements needed • Outline a clear set of actions your school can take • Recommendations for content filters and plans for updating (because, let’s be honest, techsavvy students can be motivated to find ways around filters) • Provide clear, easy to follow information for staff to understand the importance of key security implementations.
Put simply, it’s all about providing a clear set of instructions to protect the devices staff and students use, the services they need to access, and the vast amounts of personal information that schools collect and manage. Ready to start? Contact our team to find out more about our NSAE. New Era Technology - School Technology Experts Learn more about our solutions and services on our website.

Meet Our UC Team It has long been known that New Era Technology has a wide diversity of skills and expertise in its ranks to help support schools make good decisions about products and services that make a difference to Teaching and Learning. But what many people don’t know, is that is recent times New Era Technology has developed a AV / UC (Audio Visual / Unified Communications) Division. This division and, mostly importantly, its people have an experience and capability paralleled by few.
The following three interviews focus on some of the key members of the New Era Technology AV/UC Division as part of our wider whanau.
Richard Nagle Tell us a bit about your background in technology inclusion and openness where success in all its guises is celebrated. and specifically AV/UC? I started in AV roughly the same time the VHS and BETA battle was settled (go on, Google that). At that time I was in the home theatre market where projectors weighed 83kgs and the room needed to be dark. As the projector market changed to newer technologies their weight dropped to 4-6kgs with images that were viewable with the lights on, the market took off and I became part of what is called the Pro-AV market.
The last 15 years I spent in the manufacturer side of the Pro AV where I worked for AMX, which was owned by Harman, which was owned by Samsung. Harman’s most recognisable brand is JBL which has everything from small speakers in your hand to the biggest venues in the world like Tottenham Stadium and the LA Rams SoFi stadium with the largest Samsung LED stadium screen in the world (Google that one too!).
What are the biggest changes you have seen in AV/UC technology that has affected users in recent years?
No doubt the biggest change has been the move from hardware to software conferencing, from Cisco and Polycom to TEAMS and ZOOM on computer devices. Although these are super easy to consume, customers still need help to make these work well in larger rooms and spaces like halls and boardrooms. Tell us a little bit about what you do in your spare time.
I love the sea! Anytime I can spend on, in and under the water is a happy day for me. I live north of the city of Auckland to be closer to my playground of Kawau Island to Great Barrier Island.
Given your experience, what advice would you What is your current role and what do you see as give to those making decisions about AV/UC solutions? the most important parts of it? I am the General Manager for the New Zealand New Era Technology, UC Division. We have a UC/AV engineering team, an installation and design team, a sales team and a great Service Desk to provide a true end-to-end solution set. For me, it’s all about our world class people, creating an environment of 14
We always start with “what are the issues/frustrations/ problems you are facing?”. Frequently, they are related to the peripherals in the room, once we understand what the customer problems are we can create a plan. My advice would be to start that conversation early so we can clearly define a plan together.

Teams Licensing Provided by the Ministry of Education From 2022 Why Teams Calling? Microsoft Teams combines chat, video meetings, file storage, and application integration. Direct routing adds high quality calling functionality to and from the public phone network, directly from the Teams application. This gives you the functionality of a traditional Phone System (PBX) with call-handling functions like call hold, transfer, forwarding and voicemail all in the cloud, but without the actual PBX.
New Era’s Team Calling System empowers your staff to work more effectively by enabling them to make calls to landlines or mobiles within Microsoft Teams.
As part of the Microsoft Renewed Schools' Agreement with the Ministry of Education, Teams calling – Licensing per user is covered under A5.
