PERIOD PHOTO COLLECTION: NEW FERRY BUS DEPOT, DEPOT, 196 1960s st

With New Ferry hosting a Classic Vehicle Day on 31st August, a timely look at an interestingly poignant photo from the late 1960s. New Ferry was once an important centre for local transport. After the trams that ran from here to Birkenhead were scrapped in December 1931, the march march of progress saw Crosville move in with its fleet of buses. The tram shed on New Chester Road was replaced with a smart new bus depot (relocating from the previous one around the corner in New Ferry Road – today the home of Rocket Training). Older New Ferry residents will remember the blue buses such as the number 10 in the picture which took them to the beach at New Brighton via Liscard. Two of the original blue buses will be visiting New Ferry again for the event. This This 1930s bus depot was demolished in the early 1970s when a new depot was built further down New Chester Road in Rock Ferry. Today, this is the site of New Ferry’s post office and Hunters Furniture Store.
