DUAL DEGREE Art Education (BFA/MAT)

A Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) education is unique in its goal to develop critical thinking by encouraging risk taking, teaching how to learn from failure and promoting flexibility and tolerance for ambiguity. Our overall goal at NHIA is to help our students recognize, understand and apply this expertise to advocate for the importance and relevancy of their art and design skills in society at large.

JOEL GILL

CHAIRPERSON, FOUNDATIONS “Foundations at NHIA is about more than skill development. By bringing together faculty, students and artists who work in a wide range of media, we are building a community where students create, invent and learn. Students in the Foundations program develop into creative professionals with the ability to question everything and the technical agility to be really amazing makers.

FOUNDATIONS

Getting Started Our Foundations program is taught by a team of faculty drawn from every department. It integrates Liberal Arts, Sciences and all of our majors, to provide you with the experiences, skills and well-rounded education you need to succeed in your chosen discipline.

JOSH QUERY CLASS OF 2016 | CERAMICS

“I love this college. I love the instructors, my classmates, even the location is the perfect mix of the suburbs and city. I’m an hour’s drive from Boston, the beach and the mountains. Living in Manchester, I’m seconds away from my classes, restaurants, the music scene, cafés and shops.”

| 12 |

CERAMICS

Exploring 3 Dimensions

Ceramics at NHIA is different because we not only teach hand-building and wheel-working, but we also explore sculptural forms and cross-disciplinary making with printmaking, figure drawing, typography and more. You will not only learn how to create your own glazes and fire in electric, gas and wood-fired kilns, but also learn the science and art behind designing and building kilns. We push the relationship between form and function, which expands knowledge of the craft and, as the largest ceramics department in the region, we offer the best facilities including a museum quality collection of work from top ceramicists. You’ll also broaden your experience with trips overseas to international ceramics events in places like Japan or China.

SHANNON SCOTT

CLASS OF 2018 | ILLUSTRATION “What I love most about Comic Arts is that it’s experimental yet there’s a sequence to telling your story. The faculty help the students tell those stories whether they be fantastical, epic super-powered battles or quiet personal memoirs; their goal and mission is to train us to be storytellers and help us develop our own voice. It’s the perfect combination of art and writing. And the location of NHIA is perfect. You can work remotely but it’s really easy to meet with other comic artists or clients in Boston and beyond.”

COMIC ARTS

Merge Art With Writing

Comic Arts is and always has been a medium defined by passion, dedication, boldness, and experimentation. NHIA’s Comic Arts major is a unique, cross-disciplinary course of study that reflects that rich diversity of artistic expression present in the world of Comic Arts today. From traditional comics and editorial cartoons to the latest techniques and trends in graphic novels, anime or web-based animation, you will have the opportunity to learn not only how to tell a story, but how to bring it to life. Our Comic Arts major weaves together creative writing, illustration and graphic design in a one-of-akind program that will broaden your horizons and open up new avenues for creative exploration in all manner of storytelling. And, our innovative partnership with Center for Cartoon Studies affords you the opportunity to meet and work with a broad range of visiting comic artists and cartoonists from around the world.

EMILY SMITH CLASS OF 2016 | CREATIVE WRITING

“I’ve had a very positive experience at NHIA. Many of my classes pushed me into writing in ways I had never written before. I feel like that was a big breaking point in my writing. When you’re in the studio, you learn how to give and receive criticism that applies not to just your art, but also in the workplace. Creative writing allows you to obtain critical thinking skills that are often lacking in the workplace. ”

| 16 |

CREATIVE WRITING

Painting With Words

In Creative Writing at NHIA, we embrace what it means to be a writer in the 21st century. Get close, personal attention from our faculty of professional writers as you master fundamentals, then explore and exploit more complex and experimental features of the craft. From fiction, non-fiction, poetry and hybrid forms to graphic novel writing and multicultural explorations, you will be pushed to not only write, but to consider the impact your writing has on the reader, community and culture. Crossdisciplinary studies with other majors inform practical knowledge of the publishing and digital realms.

DANIEL ESPINOZA

CLASS OF 2018 | FINE ARTS “I chose NHIA because I really loved the work I saw created by the students and the attitude of the faculty. The other thing I liked is that the staff and students are really involved in improving the city. They are not afraid to go out and make things happen, whether it’s in the streets or in the gallery. I feel like that is a unique NHIA experience. In my opinion, it’s a waste of time to make a living off of something that isn’t fun or creative. You’ll spend the majority of your life working in your chosen career. If you’re not enjoying it, you’re not really living.”

“The Printmaking Department is one of the greatest facets of the NHIA community. Their high-quality facilities and equipment allow students to collaborate, experiment and make artistic discoveries. As a place where students from all disciplines come together to create, the Printmaking department empowers and inspires students to make an impact. When students join Millennial Press, a for-students, by -students letterpress shop, they make, sell and market their artwork, organize fundraisers and help develop the department. As a founding member, Millennial Press is one of my favorite parts of the program and it is exciting to see it evolve. What truly makes the department, though, is the amazing faculty. They are our mentors, career advisors, and friends. Since graduation, the skills I’ve developed in printmaking classes have played a crucial role in my creative practice.

“I was initially attracted to the Design program at NHIA mainly because of the usefulness and practicality of design. I also really enjoy the process and groundwork that happens behind the scenes. I had some great professors at NHIA who actually cared and were super helpful. I still talk to a number of them, even though I’ve graduated. And the small class sizes were perfect for one-on-one feedback. All of these things factored into my ability to earn a position working for Wanderu Engineering Co. as a graphic and UX designer.”

Tuition and fees are subject to change. * The Housing Damage Deposit (for resident students only) is assessed only once and will be refunded to the student, less any damage to NHIA property, at graduation or when they move off campus. ** NHIA’s “Junior/Senior Housing Loyalty Discount” offers a reduced housing rate for students with more than 60 credits who have previously lived in NHIA-owned housing for at least one full academic year. *** The 19-meal plan is required for all first and second year resident students (i.e., students with fewer than 60 credits). Commuting students as well as Junior and Senior students living on campus may select either the 19 or 10-meals per week plan. Contact the Residential Housing Office at 603-836-2174 for additional information. Students enrolled in more than 18 credits per semester will be assessed an Overload Charge of $1,095 per credit. Students concerned about paying NHIA’s costs are strongly encouraged to complete the FAFSA before March 1 at www.fafsa. ed.gov. NHIA’s school code is 031823. Need-based tuition and housing grants are available to NHIA students who qualify. Visit our financial aid page for more information.
