Our Story Began Many Years Ago
The New Hampshire Institute of Art (NHIA) is the oldest and largest nonprofit arts institution in New Hampshire, founded in 1898 through the merger of the Manchester Electrical Club and the Manchester Art Association with the goal of promoting the study of the arts and sciences.
Today, NHIA offers undergraduate, graduate, and community education programs serving almost 2,000 students annually on campuses in Manchester and Sharon/Peterborough, New Hampshire.

A Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) education is unique in its goal to develop critical thinking by encouraging risk taking, teaching how to learn from failure and promoting flexibility and tolerance for ambiguity. Exploring 3 Dimensions
Ceramics at NHIA is different because we not only teach hand-building and wheel-working, but we also explore sculptural forms and cross-disciplinary making with printmaking, figure drawing, typography and more. You will not only learn how to create your own glazes and fire in electric, gas and wood-fired kilns, but also learn the science and art behind designing and building kilns. We push the relationship between form and function, which expands knowledge of the craft and, as the largest ceramics department in the region, we offer the best facilities including a museum quality collection of work from top ceramicists. You’ll also broaden your experience with trips overseas to international ceramics events in places like Japan or China.

In Creative Writing at NHIA, we embrace what it means to be a writer in the 21st century. Get close, personal attention from our faculty of professional writers as you master fundamentals, then explore and exploit more complex and experimental features of the craft. A Way of Thinking The Graphic Design program at NHIA is a unique place that embraces both digital and analog technologies – at the same time we are using Cintiq tablets to develop digital work, we are pushing you to learn letterpress and incorporate hand-drawn type, skills that complement each other and make you better designers. Our Graphic Design program is led by faculty who are practicing designers. You will be immersed in the industry through our Design NH agency, where you’ll run an in-house agency for real-world clients, and the internship experience where you will work for companies like Segway, Dyn and Disney.

Looking Beyond the Lens
Undivided attention from faculty who are second-to-none in their profession makes for an experience that few students encounter in their academic lives. We’ll teach you traditional darkroom and film techniques while engaging in new technologies in the field. From daguerreotype to digital, you will create photographs as they were created over 100 years ago, while also learning advanced digital making and editing techniques. These are skills that few in the industry have but many desire in this highly competitive field.

When students join Millennial Press, a for-students, by -students letterpress shop, they make, sell and market their artwork, organize fundraisers and help develop the department. As a founding member, Millennial Press is one of my favorite parts of the program and it is exciting to see it evolve. What truly makes the department, though, is the amazing faculty. They are our mentors, career advisors, and friends. Since graduation, the skills I’ve developed in printmaking classes have played a crucial role in my creative practice.�

NHIA’s Printmaking major offers you a unique opportunity to work in both contemporary and historical methods simultaneously. From screen prints designed on your laptop to 15th century etching and lithography techniques, you’ll develop an arsenal of tools through which you can express yourself. Create a zine in the letterpress studio, carve a large format woodblock for printing, explore series and variation through monotype and partner with other students in the other departments on community projects, or try your hand at working with clients through Millennial Press. Ever wondered why some applications or products are easy-to-use and others just plain frustrating? As a User Experience (UX) Design major, you’ll learn first-hand what makes for good design whether that’s a physical product, a software application, or a customer experience. LIBERAL ARTS AND SCIENCES Our Liberal Arts and Sciences courses provide you with the thread that connects your studies to the world around you. Our curriculum covers the broad range of subjects needed for a truly comprehensive college education. You’ll learn to communicate effectively, apply mathematical principles to your art and sharpen your critical thinking and research skills. You’ll complete your course requirements with the skills you need to be an informed, thoughtful, productive citizen and a well-rounded artist. UNH MANCHESTER PARTNERSHIP Our academic partnership with University of New Hampshire (UNH) Manchester allows full-time students enrolled at either college to take a variety of course, bringing together the fine arts, design and creative writing skills that NHIA is known for with the strong business, science, technology, engineering and math courses offered by UNH Manchester. And, yes, you can walk there. The campus is less than one mile away! The best part is classes taken through this collaborative arrangement won’t cost students at either college a penny more than what they’re already paying for tuition.

in NYC, Chicago or 34 Other Places AICAD EXCHANGE PROGRAM When you attend NHIA you have the benefit of being able to spend a semester studying at a U.S. or Canadian AICAD partner school through the AICAD Exchange program. The AICAD Exchange program permits full-time students in their junior year who are attending one of the 34 participating AICAD schools the unique opportunity to attend another school for one semester at no additional cost or loss of credit. The AICAD Exchange program offers students the experience of living in a different city for a semester. Bill (Chapter 33), the Montgomery G.I. • Payment Plan Option: NHIA offers a payment plan option for all students. The Tuition Management System (TMS) is a payment plan that divides the tuition due by semester into five monthly payments. • Alternative (Private) Education Loans: Alternative loans are credit-based loans offered by banks and credit unions that can be used to supplement financial aid • Private Scholarships and Grants: Private organizations offer financial assistance to many qualified individuals each year. The New Hampshire Institute of Art (NHIA) requires that all first and second-year, full-time (i.e., students with 12 or more credits), BFA students live on-campus. This requirement may be waived for students who:
• Live at and commute from a parent’s/legal guardian’s (defined as the person(s) who is named and whose financial information appears on the student’s completed FAFSA) home address that is less than 50 miles from NHIA’s Manchester campus (based on Google Maps);
• Will be 21 years or older at the start of the upcoming NHIA semester;
• Are married, in a civil union, have a domestic partner, or are the primary care-giver for a child at the start of the upcoming NHIA semester.
• Transfer 30 or more college credits to NHIA, and/or;
NHIA is eager to foster a vibrant residential experience for our new students and believes that residence hall living offers an invaluable component of the overall art school experience. Living in the Residence Halls allows students the freedom to focus primarily on their course of study. We believe strongly that living on campus releases a student from the stress of commuting, monthly financial and roommate issues, safety concerns, and also allows them to participate in the creative community on campus. Tuition and fees are subject to change. * The Housing Damage Deposit (for resident students only) is assessed only once and will be refunded to the student, less any damage to NHIA property, at graduation or when they move off campus. ** NHIA’s “Junior/Senior Housing Loyalty Discount” offers a reduced housing rate for students with more than 60 credits who have previously lived in NHIA-owned housing for at least one full academic year. *** The 19-meal plan is required for all first and second year resident students (i.e., students with fewer than 60 credits). Commuting students as well as Junior and Senior students living on campus may select either the 19 or 10-meals per week plan.
