A Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) education is unique in its goal to develop critical thinking by encouraging risk taking, teaching how to learn from failure, and promoting a flexibility and tolerance for ambiguity. Our overall goal at NHIA is to help our students recognize, understand, and apply this expertise to advocate for the importance and relevancy of their art and design skills in society at large. | 21 |

CHAIRPERSON, FOUNDATIONS “Foundations at NHIA is about more than skill development. By bringing together faculty, students, and artists who work in a wide range of media, we are building a community where students create, invent, and learn. Students in the Foundations program develop into creative professionals with the ability to question everything and the technical agility to be really amazing makers. | 22 |
Getting Started WITH FOUNDATIONS
Our Foundations first-year program is taught by a team of faculty from every department, integrating liberal arts and sciences and the majors, to provide all students the experiences, skills, and well-rounded education they need to succeed in their chosen discipline right from the start.

Exploring 3 Dimensions WITH CERAMICS
Ceramics at NHIA is different because we not only teach hand-building and wheel-working, but we also explore sculptural forms and cross-disciplinary making with printmaking, figure drawing, typography, and more. Students not only learn how to create their own glazes and fire in electric, gas, and wood-fired kilns, but also learn the science and art behind designing and building their own kilns. We push the relationship between form and function, which expands knowledge of the craft. And as the largest ceramics department in the region, we offer the best facilities, including a museum quality collection of work from top ceramicists. You’ll also broaden your experience with trips overseas to international ceramics events in places like Japan or China.

CLASS OF 2016 | CREATIVE WRITING “You expect to make friends when you come to college, but in NHIA’s Creative Writing Department, we’re on a completely different level. When you share your writing with someone here, you’re saying, “Here, let me show you the innermost parts of my soul I don’t show anyone else, and please critique it and let’s have a conversation.” When you know that your faculty are open to having a discussion with you, that makes all the difference, because you have a safe environment in which to share personal work, and you feel like you’re not going to be talked down to. It’s exciting to be around like-minded people who want to see you succeed.”

Painting With Words IN CREATIVE WRITING

From fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and hybrid forms to graphic novel writing and multicultural explorations, students are pushed to not only write, but to consider the impact their writing has on their reader, community, and culture. “I decided to go to art school because I’ve been a creative my whole life and I’m incredibly passionate about my future in the arts wherever that will take me. I chose NHIA because here I’m treated like a real artist. The feedback I’ve received on my entrance portfolio was incredible and inspiring, I couldn’t see myself going anywhere else. And I wanted to major in design here because I love the feeling I get when creating logos or layouts for a project. I feel like I’m putting together a big puzzle and I’m always excited to see it finished.”

DANIEL ESPINOZA
CLASS OF 2018 | FINE ARTS “I chose NHIA because I really loved the work that I saw coming from the students and I really loved the attitude that I saw within the buildings, the instructors really cared a lot more about the actual art than just the image of the school. One thing I noticed about NHIA is a lot of the staff and a lot of the students are involved with the city. They are not afraid to go out and make things happen whether its in the streets or in gallery, I feel like that is a unique NHIA experience. The attitudes of all the people I worked with really encompassed my overall feel of NHIA. In my opinion it is a waste of time to make a living off of something that isn’t fun or creative. A career is the majority of your life and if you’re not enjoying it you’re not really living. You really learn so much more about yourself through creative arts.”

CLASS OF 2020 | PHOTOGRAPHY “I wasn’t going to go to college at all until my friend told me about this school. His experience changed my perception because having people care about what you care about is really cool and I wanted to be surrounded by those kind of people. If you’re thinking about doing art as a career I would definitely recommend going to an art school. Like my friend told me, being surrounded by people who care about what you care about is inspiring. It feels good to have people you can connect with and share your work with and it’s not just your mom and dad saying, “Oh my gosh your picture is amazing.” It’s important to have someone who can tell you what you could have done better so you can grow.”

Looking Beyond the Lens
IN PHOTOGRAPHY
Undivided attention from faculty who are second to none in their profession makes for an experience that few students encounter in their academic lives. We teach students traditional darkroom and film techniques while engaging in new technologies in the field: from the daguerreotype to digital. Students create photographs as they were created over 100 years ago, while also learning advanced digital making and editing techniques. These are skills that few in the industry have but many desire in this highly competitive field.
