Building Community
This year has been a phase of incredible growth at New Heights. We celebrated our one-year anniversary in our new home, an accomplishment that demonstrates the strength and resolve of our entire New Heights family. We are proud and thrilled to be part of our new community and of the partnerships and relationships we have built in Brooklyn and across the city.
Since 2005, we have helped hundreds of young people rise to their potential on the basketball court, in the classroom and throughout their lives and careers. And in 2022, as we settled into our new permanent home at the Major R. Owens Health and Wellness Center, our community grew bigger and stronger. With our new courts and classrooms in place, New Heights increased our staff and partnered with local organizations, elected officials, schools and corporations to expand our College Bound program and introduce new community-based academic and athletic services for youth.
Over the past year, we served over 1,000 youth, more than triple the previous year. We hosted dozens of basketball clinics and events that featured skills and drills training, and developed new educational workshops on financial literacy, technology and coding, sports and social justice, and social emotional learning. We welcomed guest speakers and other professionals to share their expertise and insight with our student-athletes, and opened up our facilities to make quality sports and recreation activities available to hundreds of additional boys and girls in Crown Heights and the surrounding neighborhoods.
These successes, and so many others, would not have been possible without the incredible generosity of our supporters. As you read the pages that follow, please know that your continued commitment means the world to us – and to our studentathletes.
Now, as we look to the future, New Heights will continue to strengthen our engagement with the local community so that we may widen our reach and deepen our impact not only in Brooklyn but throughout New York City. On behalf of the entire New Heights family, especially the young people we serve, thank you for being a part of this exciting journey.
In appreciation,
Ted Smith Executive Director Mark Patricof Board ChairmanOUR MISSION
New Heights’ mission is to educate and empower promising underserved youth to be leaders, champions and student-athletes by developing the skills necessary for success in high school, college and life.
OUR VISION
Through expanded programming and deep engagement with the Brooklyn community, New Heights will establish itself as a leader in sports-based youth development and a model of nonprofit excellence.
POPULATION SERVED
New Heights targets boys and girls, ages 7-21, who have a passion for basketball and who reside in under-resourced communities in New York City.
Our Approach
As a sports-based youth development organization, New Heights uses intentionality to combine basketball programming with services that support college and career readiness, social emotional learning, and physical and mental health. Through this lens, we design and deliver a variety of after-school, weekend and summer programs that reach hundreds of young people annually.
Physical + Mental Health & Wellness
Programs include basketball leagues and clinics, nutrition workshops, and community partnerships and events.
Social Emotional Learning
Programs include an all-day summer camp, workshops across a range of social emotional learning competencies based on community need, and implementation of our TREE values (Teamwork, Respect, Effort and Excellence).
High School + College + Career Access
Programs include high school and college exposure, test preparation, tutoring and workshops on applications, financial aid, financial literacy, interviewing, resume writing and internships.
SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING
PHYSICAL + MENTAL HEALTH & WELLNESS
HIGH SCHOOL + COLLEGE + CAREER ACCESS
In 2022, our program model was recognized by a number of prestigious institutions. In addition to being named “Program of the Year” by the Jr. NBA, New Heights received the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Sports Award for making our community a healthier place to live, learn, work and play.
College Bound
Our signature program, College Bound, uses basketball to engage young people in a comprehensive network of academic, social emotional learning and college preparatory services. In 2022, College Bound enrolled 348 student-athletes and fielded 27 teams that competed locally, regionally and in some cases, nationally.
Each of the following initiatives work together as a continuum of services to help student-athletes stay on track for grade promotion, and make it to and through high school and college.
High
School
Assist supports 4th-8th graders as they prepare for the transition from middle to high school. Services include after-school classroom sessions focused on academic skills development and social emotional learning, one-on-one and small group tutoring, test prep, high school application guidance, high school visits, financial aid advisement and individualized counseling.
Summer Academy is a 5-week day camp that combines academic enrichment with basketball skills development for our middle school youth. In 2022, our curriculum grew to include financial literacy, technology and coding, health and wellness, and sports and social justice. For rising 7th-9th graders, we also offered a special Week Away at Suffield Academy in Connecticut where student-athletes participated in projectbased learning and team-building exercises in a setting outside of New York City.
College Assist provides our high school student-athletes with the individual support necessary to gain admission to competitive colleges and universities, as well as group workshops that equip them with the hard and soft skills necessary to thrive in college and beyond. Services include SAT/ACT prep, one-on-one and small group tutoring for students who are struggling in specific subjects, financial aid and college application support, campus visits, life skills development and NCAA recruiting and eligibility guidance.
Career Assist provides ongoing support to College Bound alumni who matriculate to college in order to ensure that they graduate on time and are career ready. Services include college course and major selection, resume building, interview skills workshops, professional networking opportunities, internship assistance and career exposure.
IMPACT
Since our inception in 2005, New Heights has demonstrated 100% high school graduation, 98% college matriculation and over 75% college graduation rates for our student-athletes. New Heights has helped secure over $65 million in scholarships and financial aid for our student-athletes.

The Foundation
Last year, New Heights introduced The Foundation, a series of 8-week basketball clinics targeted to children ages 7-14 who live in Community District 9 (but open to youth throughout New York City). In addition to building introductory basketball skills on the court, these weekend clinics provide participants with classroom sessions focused on social emotional learning and life skills development.
To date, The Foundation has enrolled hundreds of young people and engaged a number of sports-based organizations who lend their expertise. Special thanks to our program partners – the NBPA and 5-Star Basketball.
Our Partners
During the first year in our new home, New Heights partnered with over 60 local schools, communitybased organizations and corporations to enhance our academic and athletic programs.
Corporate Engagement
As part of our strategy to expose program participants to new people, ideas and experiences, we partnered with several corporations including Apollo Global Management, Drone Racing League, Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, Neuberger Berman, Seaport Global and Turton Bond. Together we designed and delivered workshops on a range of topics such as financial literacy, career readiness and technology.
Community Basketball Clinics
In addition to our Foundation clinics, we hosted several basketball clinics in 2022 in partnership with the Brooklyn Nets, NY Knicks, NY Liberty, USA Basketball, the NBA and the NBPA that served over 300 local youth and adults.
MOCC Partners
In 2022, we collaborated with several of our neighbors in the Major Owens Community Center to provide programming across a range of areas, including the Carey Gabay Foundation (health and wellness), Digital Girl (coding), Globall (soccer), Ifateyo (dance), Imagine Swimming, Brooklyn Pride (cultural programming and advocacy) and the Boys Club of New York.
Special Thanks
New Heights is tremendously grateful to several key people who helped pave the way for growth in our new Brooklyn home. Extra special thanks to NYC Department of Cultural Affairs Commissioner Laurie Cumbo, NYC Council Member Crystal Hudson and our friends at BFC Partners for all their hard work and dedication.
Our Events
6th Annual GameChangers Ball
On Thursday, October 20th, for the first time ever, New Heights transformed our three full-size basketball courts into an amazing ballroom and welcomed over 400 guests to the 6th annual GameChangers Ball. Through the incredible generosity of our friends and supporters, we exceeded our goal and raised over $1.7 million. The evening was a magical celebration of our sports-based youth development programs and the people who make every victory possible.
We were thrilled to honor Will Blodgett (Founder and CEO, Tredway), Keia Clarke (CEO, New York Liberty), James Feldeine (basketball professional and New Heights alum) and Seaport Global, each of whom champions our mission and efforts to bring quality athletic and academic programming to young people in New York City.
9th Annual Team Challenge
The Team Challenge is an extra special event that brings together the entire New Heights family – teammates, coaches, staff and volunteers – to raise funds for our academic and athletic programming for youth. After two years of virtual events, we were excited to host the 9th annual Team Challenge Shoot-a-thon in person on Saturday, June 4th, on our own basketball courts in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. After collecting pledges and donations, our student-athletes, coaches and honorary General Managers showed up and turned thousands of free throws into actual dollars. Thank you to everyone for helping us raise nearly $200,000!
In 2022, New Heights was delighted to host two of our signature special events in our new Brooklyn headquarters.
FINANCIALS
This past year, New Heights entered a new chapter of growth as an organization. Anchored by the leadership of our Board of Directors and the generosity of our family of supporters, we opened our new facility and expanded our programming.
New Heights is in our strongest financial position to date as we take on this expansion, having raised a record $5M in revenue (a 43% increase from the prior year).
We have steadily increased our revenue over the past four years, and our 6th annual GameChangers Ball in October 2022 raised a record $1.7M, putting us in a strong position as we start our new fiscal year. We thank everyone for your continued support which allows us to scale our impact.
