There are butterflies on the flowers! Look, they’re near the ones I planted!
2 Sam, can you count the butterflies? One. So, how was your first week at school? ...Sam? Hey, what’s the matter? Hmm?
What? Why?
I hate school.
It’s a new school; it’s not always easy at first. Have you talked to any of the other kids?
You’re a great charmer; it’ll get easier. Keep your chin up, ‘kay?
All they do is tell me to sit down and be quiet.
Yeah, almost everyone.
Now, let’s go play with your sister.
3
4 one month later... ...Brian, do you have a sec? Hey, Brian? Almost done, Tiff. Just gonna save this file really quick... ...done!
I’m worried about Sam. He’s been getting more sullen and withdrawn for the past month.
Yeah, he’s not himself. I noticed he hardly ate his breakfast this morning.
What’s up?
I think it’s time we had a talk with his teacher; she may know what’s wrong.
Good idea. Let’s schedule a meeting for next Monday.
We’ll get this straightened out.
5
monday afternoon...
Here it is--Sam’s homeroom.
You must be Mr. and Mrs. Cooper! I’m Mrs. Payne, please come in!
6
Hello!
Thank you for your time, Mrs. Payne.
We wanted to talk to you about our son, Sam.
Not really. He seems upset after he started going to school.
Certainly. Is everything okay at your house?
7
Sam is a very charming and quick-witted boy, but he lacks focus in class a lot of the time.
He has trouble remembering things. At first, I didn’t think much of it, but since it happens every day, it’s interfering with his education.
What do you mean?
Could this be why he’s upset?
Maybe. Since we keep going over the same things again and again, he seems constrained and unmotivated.
I recommend consulting a doctor for ADHD.
8
What should we do?
ADHD?
Considering what’s going on, it’s very possible.
Do you really think he’s got ADHD?
If we don’t learn the root causes of his problems, they’ll only persist.
Whatever’s going on with Sam, we’ll do all we can to straighten it out.
9
Mr. and Mrs. Cooper?
Sam, can you say hello?
Nice to meet you, Sam! I’m Dr. Schwartz.
hello.
10
the next day...
Hmm. I wasn’t always certain whether Sam had ADHD, but at least we know for sure now.
I can integrate some tools in his learning process to improve his sense of focus.
It may take some patience, but he’s a smart boy, so I think we can make it work.
So, how can we help our son?
11
Thanks, Donna.
Of
12
course!
a few days later...
13
...I
really like this yellow one because it looks like a bumblebee, and...
... butterfly! Hurry, Kate! Let’s get it! Mommy! Daddy! Come on!
