Connecting to Our Community! "We were created by our owners and will continue to support them and the community! "

One thing that I love about New Leaf Market is that we are truly a representation of our community. The Co-op prides itself on the ability to support local farmers and businesses in our area. Besides promoting and supporting local businesses, there are other significant benefits to the owners and community members who choose to buy and eat local. One benefit of eating local is that it Christina Brown, President reconnects you with the local ecosystem. Your produce is fresher, generally hormone and pesticide free, and dare I say … tastier. It also decreases the carbon footprint to get the foods you love so dearly. This means reducing the environmental impact and reduction of fuel consumption. Your purchases have a direct farm-to-table approach, and greater accessibility to those providing your foods. Besides finding healthy foods, take advantage of additional resources available at the Co-op to learn more about the opportunities and partnerships created in the community. We are currently promoting two grants for local organizations and individuals. The second grant being offered this year is in honor of a previous employee. Please take a moment to read the requirements and eligibility guidelines to see if you or someone you know qualifies. In addition, weekly workshops have resumed at the Co-op. These workshops are free of charge and held in the dining area. Topics range from healthy eating to healthy living. After attending a workshop, please visit the aisles to see the variety of new items that are on the shelves. As we regain traction to provide the services and products that made us a staple in Tallahassee, we ask for your support and well wishes. We were created by our owners and will continue to support them and the community! Lastly, we will be hosting our semi-annual meeting on Saturday, May 18 at 10:00am at the Devoe Moore Center on FSU’s campus. Please look for information at the Co-op and on the Facebook page! Announcing New Leaf Market Co-op Community Grant Opportunities

The community fund grant is back and is offered to promote local food production, a sustainable environment, and healthy lifestyles. Two $1,000 grants will be awarded this year. We define local using the Tallahassee Metropolitan Statistical Area definition to include the Florida counties of Gadsden, Jefferson, Leon, and Wakulla. Applications will be accepted June 1- July 31, 2019. Any applications received after July 31, 2019 will not be considered. Winners will be notified by September 2, 2019. Winners will attend the award ceremony during New Leaf Market’s annual meeting to receive their grants. Winners will report back to the Board of Directors the following spring to share the outcomes of their projects.

By Folayan Barnes, New Leaf Market Board Director

The John Busch Memorial Food Scholarship The John Busch Memorial Food Scholarship is New Leaf Market’s newest grant opportunity! This is a $1200 scholarship created in memory of John Busch. Mr. Busch worked on and off at New Leaf Market, in the area of food preparation, from 1999 to 2017. The scholarship is being funded by several of John’s close friends who wanted to honor his memory. This scholarship will be awarded to a project that is related to organic or whole foods. Anyone who has a food specific project, which is related to the well-being of the community is encouraged to apply. Examples could include: a food pantry or garden which would contribute to assisting those in need, purchasing of equipment necessary for the efficient operation of a food project, or attaining a food certification. The $1200 is offered to an individual, rather than an organization. Grant applications will be accepted from May 1 until June 30. The board’s selection committee will meet in July to select a winner.

The following local organizations and individuals are encouraged to apply for the Community Fund Grant: • Local organizations defined as nonprofit under 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code • Projects which address childhood health and obesity concerns in the community • Organizations which seek to reduce hunger or improve access to local, natural, and/or organic food and products in the community • Events, education programs, and projects that focus on improving the quality of life for our community's residents, particularly as it relates to health, nutrition, education, and environmental preservation • Any local project that contributes to a sustainable environment • Any business which builds relationships and cooperation in the community • Classroom teachers in the community whose projects relate to the above criteria Requests from the following organizations will not be considered: • Political or advocacy groups • Service clubs or fraternal organizations • Third-party fund-raisers • Public clubs funded through membership fees • Sporting events or sports teams • Scholarships

Winter 2017

Hello New Leaf Market Family! By Taylor Biro

2018 Community Fund Grant Recipient

I work with Going Places which is Capital City Youth Services' Street Outreach Program. We serve youth ages 11-21 years old who may be homeless, running away or at risk. Our program includes a drop-in center in Frenchtown where youth can come and take a shower, wash clothes, get a meal and link up with resources and community partners. The majority of the kids we serve have past traumas that they are navigating through while also attempting to finish school, find employment and ultimately become selfsufficient with housing. Additionally, we reach youth in need through street based outreach. This is where we go out into parks, camps, shelters and so on looking for folks who may be experiencing homelessness and then we bring the resources to them! Two years ago we started a project called Breakfast Club Outreach which works to link all the street outreach programs together so no one we meet falls through the cracks. New Leaf Market saw value in this project and awarded us $1000 to use on sharing a hot and healthy meal with the folks we meet. Woohoo! Thanks y'all!

So, about four months ago the Breakfast Club Outreach team was out doing our thing in the woods meeting new folks and touching base with the people we knew, when we went to go check on a friend in the woods to pass out some breakfast and coffee. But this time it was different, he had had a stroke three days prior to our arrival and had yet to seek medical care. His head was pounding and he was now unable to walk. With the help of our community partners and his friends we brought him to the hospital and they took it from there. Since then we have visited with him a few times each month to bring out breakfast, cases of water and hygiene products. In addition to the food and supplies we collaborated with a local medical truck to bring a nurse out to him and now he has been linked up with a housing program that specializes in permanently housing folks who are chronologically homeless and who have a disability. His caseworker took over and found him housing that he will be moving into later this week! These meals that were funded through you all have turned into a lifeline for members of our community that may need some support. We all have needed our community at some point in time and I'm so thankful that together we can invest in health and housing! Thank you New Leaf for constantly investing in our community and setting the bar so high for what we should expect from our local shops. Thank you from, CCYS, Going Places and the whole Breakfast Club Crew!

The Fruit and Veggie Grilling Guide Giving fresh vegetables, stone fruit, and even lettuce a turn on the grill will intensify their flavor, with delicious results.

By Tara Duggan

W

hile most people associate outdoor grilling with burgers, hot dogs and steaks, the grill imparts big flavors to fruits and veggies, too. A wide array of produce paired with spice rubs, marinades and sauces galore will keep your patio table overflowing with delicious additions to your grilling repertoire. Seasonal summer vegetables just happen to be perfect for grilling: zucchini, eggplant and bell peppers are naturally tender and become even sweeter on the grill. Slice these vegetables about 1â „4 -inch thick and toss them in an easy marinade for 30 minutes (or better yet, overnight) before grilling for a few minutes per side. A simple combination of wine vinegar, olive oil, chopped garlic and herbs, and salt and pepper are all you need for a tasty marinade. This easy mix will turn grilled vegetables into Italian antipasti to serve with bread, olives and cheese. Or change the blend to vegetable oil, sesame oil, soy sauce, rice vinegar, and chopped garlic and ginger for Asian-flavored vegetables that are delicious with rice. Store-bought dressings with a vinegar base make wonderful marinades as well. Summertime peaches, apricots, nectarines and figs are delicious grilled. Cut fruit in half and remove any pits, then coat lightly with oil. For a sweet-savory side dish to grilled pork, chicken or lamb, sprinkle on a little salt, pepper and balsamic vinegar, then grill for a few minutes per side. And

for dessert, dust with brown sugar, then place the halves on a clean part of the grill for a few minutes per side before serving with ice cream or pound cake (or both).

Grilling tips Use moderate heat, not high.

If it’s a charcoal grill, move the charcoal to one side and grill your fruits and veggies on the other side, over indirect heat. Oil your grill thoroughly.

Fruits and vegetables are high in natural sugars, which means they can easily burn and stick to the grill. Before you begin cooking, clean the grill well, preheat it, and then use several layers of paper towel dipped in vegetable oil to grease it. Cut vegetables into the largest possible pieces.

This will prevent them from falling through the grill grate and avoid extra time spent flipping more pieces. For example, cut zucchini in slices along the length of the vegetable, rather than slicing into small rounds. Give corn on the cob a head start.

Blanch it in boiling water for a few minutes, then grill for 5 to 10 minutes to finish cooking and add smoky flavor.

Grilled Romaine Salad Servings: 4. Total time: 25 minutes.

Dressing ⁄4 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese 1 tablespoons lemon juice 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar 1 ⁄4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

While the corn grills, drizzle the bread with 1 tablespoon of olive oil and place on the grill for about 1 to 2 minutes per side until just slightly toasted and grill marks appear. Remove from the grill and cut into cubes.

5. Cut the head of romaine in half lengthwise, keeping the core intact. Wash each half thoroughly, gently shake off any excess water and dry well. 6. Drizzle both halves of romaine (cut side) with the remaining tablespoon of olive oil. Place the lettuce halves on the grill, cut side down and grill for 1 to 2 minutes per side until the outer leaves just start to wilt and the core has some nice grill marks. 7. Plate the grilled romaine on a serving platter, top with the grilled corn kernels, sliced red onion, chopped avocado and grilled croutons. 8. Drizzle the dressing on top and serve warm.

Local Spotlight:

Southern Craft Creamery The temperature is rising and staying cool is on all of our minds. Now is the time to enjoy the summer months and have a nice bowl of ice cream! What better way to celebrate summer than digging into our favorite local scoop, Southern Craft Creamery! Located in Marianna, Florida, this dairy farmer is our Spotlight Vendor of the season! At what point did you know that you would work with ice cream for a living? As dairy farmers, we've always wanted to create a value added dairy product. As time went by we also realized that some consumers had misconceptions about where their food came from. We wanted the opportunity to share with consumers our story, share how food is produced (ice cream and milk in our case), and how we care for our animals and our land. What distinguishes Southern Craft Creamery from other ice cream? We are a farm-to-table product. We are producing ice cream from nonhomogenized milk. Each batch of our ice cream is hand crafted. We bring milk from the farm each morning. That milk is made into ice cream that same day. We ensure that each batch has a clean ingredient label. We are most interested in letting the taste of milk and cream shine through in the ice cream no matter what the flavor. All of our flavors are created in house. The only flavor that is purchased is vanilla. We buy as many local products as possible to make our flavors. We enjoy sharing the hard work of other local farmers through our ice cream. What are your top selling flavors, and why do you think that’s the case? Our top selling flavors for the last couple of years have been our Salty Caramel and Salted Dark Chocolate. We believe they stay on top because of the sweet/salty combination. The caramel is produced by caramelizing the sugar which would naturally go in the ice cream. Our chocolates are made using

a chocolate from French Broad Chocolates in Asheville, North Carolina. Who gets input when it comes to flavors that you serve? Everyone has an opportunity to suggest flavors. We get inspiration from eating out and enjoying the flavors chefs are pairing on their menu, suggestions from chefs we serve, from our customers and of course our staff. What’s your favorite aspect of having a shop in Marianna? Our favorite aspect of having a shop in Marianna is providing and sharing with our community. We enjoy the day-to-day interactions with our local consumers plus we enjoy sharing our community and what it has to offer with our customers visiting our area. What’s your favorite part about working in the ice cream community? Our best friends are in the dairy community. After Hurricane Michael, which devastated our community, our dairy friends all showed up with equipment to clear our farm roads so we would be able to feed and care for our cows. They brought generators, fuel and food, and they also made donations to local food distribution spots. Not only did they deliver supplies, they stayed and worked with us in the days after the hurricane. There are no better families than farm families. Farm families understand the commitment to care for animals regardless of the circumstances. Grounds From Your

Team

By Madelon Givens, New Leaf Market Co-op

New Leaf's Green Team strikes again! We've arranged for our deli to collect their spent coffee grounds for customers to take home for FREE! Grounds are available in the big, lime bucket in our bulk section. What exactly can you do with used coffee grounds? 1. Clean your garbage disposal: Toss some grounds in your garbage disposal to clean it out and give it a fresh coffee smell. 2. Add them to the soil of your acid-loving plants like azaleas and hydrangeas for beautiful blooms. 3. Combine used grounds with your compost to give it a nitrogen boost! 4. Exfoliate! Mix grounds with an oil like coconut or jojoba. Massage the mixture into your skin while showering. 5. Sprinkle grounds in your garden as a way to repel ants and slugs. 6. Fix your furniture! Mix a few drops of water with a pinch of coffee grounds, mix it with a Q-tip, and rub it into any scratches in your furniture, wait 10 minutes, and wipe clean. 7. Freshen up your fridge: Place grounds in an open jar and put it in the back of your fridge to keep it smelling clean.

8. Clean your hands after chopping garlic or onions by rubbing grounds on your hands. 9. Mix coffee grounds and water to make a natural, non-toxic paint for kids! These are only a few examples of the wonders of coffee grounds. Let us know what you do with your grounds by posting a picture online and tagging us! New Leaf Market Co-op Community Art Wall

Featured Artist of the Month: Shawnee Sharpe We are proud to offer wall space in our Deli Seating area to local artists to display their artwork in a public space. Get to know our June artist — Shawnee Sharpe

Can you tell us about the process of making your work?

I might get a spark of inspiration from nature or something I have experienced. I do a few little sketches to clarify my idea and then I start painting. The painting usually evolves and changes a little from my original idea. What’s the significance of your color palette?

To me, color is the most important element of a painting. It draws the viewer in or turns them off, it sets the mood, moves the eye through the work. If you take any work of art and change the color palette, the whole feel of the work will change. Sometimes just a beautiful color is an inspiration for a new painting. I might not even know what it will be, just that I have to capture that color. If you could work within a past art movement, which would it be?

American Modernism. Do you have a favorite photograph or painting, which inspired you?

I love all of Georgia O’Keeffe’s work. What is your favorite art gallery and why?

The Georgia O’Keeffe Gallery in Santa Fe, New Mexico. I have been 14

Spring/Summer 2019

a huge fan of her work for most of my adult life so when I got to see so many of her pieces in one place it was incredible. Did you go to art school?

Yes, I have a Bachelor’s degree in Studio Art from Florida State University. Go Noles! Was there a pivotal moment when you decided to follow your path as an artist?

I have always had a love for art, even as a small child I spent many hours drawing pictures of horses. My mother is an artist and I grew up in the family business that had a full time art department so I was always surrounded by creative and talented people. Continuing my path in art was just natural. What is your favorite part about being an artist?

The creative freedom to visually express yourself and create something beautiful that is one of a kind. If you would like to purchase Shawnee’s featured artwork, please contact her directly by emailing her at shawneesharpe@gmail.com If you’d like to be our next featured artist or if you would like to reserve space in our seating area, please email afletcher@ newleafmarket.coop
