SKLZ TRAVEL BARREL ROLLER
SCIENCE IN SPORTS (SIS) GO ELECTROLYTE
P1,379 | Chris Sports (Glorietta 3)
Your gams will take a beating with all the running that they have to endure so make sure they get TLC before and after the big day. Stash a handy and helpful self-myofascial release (SMR) gear such as SKLZ’s Travel Barrel Roller. Measuring only 12” X 4.5”, this compact-sized comfort inducer is an ideal travel partner that not only gets the knots out, but also reduces your chances of muscle injury, increases oxygen flow and flexibility, and restores muscle performance. It’s hollow-core, extradurable construction guarantees that it won’t give up on you quite easily.
Aura Premier)
Destination racing may sound fun and fancy but the long plane travel can take a toll on your skin with the dry air. Slather on Celeteque’s hypoallergenic and non-comedogenic DermoScience Suncare Matte Moisturizer. It hydrates the skin and gives an oil-free and smooth matte finish after use, and provides double sunscreen protection against UVA/ UVB rays during prolonged sun exposure, thanks to its SPF30 property.

GARMIN VIRB XE P23,990 | Garmin Concept Store (Glorietta 5)
“If it’s not on Instagram, it never happened,” so the social media rule goes. Fill your feed with vivid and high-value photos and videos taken straight from Garmin Virb XE’s extra-revolutionary action camera that shoots rich, highdefinition, wide-angle footage and produces 12-megapixel photos at up to 30 frames per second. Water babies will go wild with its waterproof capacity of up to 50 meters deep and ability to capture clean and clear videos at that. Its G-Metrix feature can also track your movements in realtime and display it all in powerful gauges and graphs.
2XU TRANSITION BAG FEEDBACK SPORTS OMNIUM PORTABLE RESISTANCE TRAINER P19,500 | Bikezilla
If the weather turns vile and you’re unfamiliar with the race routes to do pre-race cycling warm-ups, Feedback Sports’ Omnium portable bike trainer is the way to go. Train trouble-free inside the comforts of your hotel room, thanks to its Internal Progressive Resistance (IPR) that delivers a real road feel with minimal noise, as well as greased and sealed bearings that need no maintenance. No assembly needed (simply fold and unfold), and it’s just over two feet long, and weighs under 14 pounds. Spotted on race-cation with this Omnium trainer: Rio 2016 Summer Olympics triathlon gold medalist Gwen Jorgensen and pro Danish triathlete Helle Frederiksen at the 2016 Island House Invitational Triathlon in the Bahamas.
P6,000 | Planet Sports (Rockwell)
We’re totally digging 2XU’s Transition Bag, with its side straps and reflectivity feature that allows for easy transportation, storage and high visibility—perfect for traveling triathletes. Its bells and whistles, which include two side water bottle holders, a durable shell which works as a bottom compartment, a waterproof zipped bottom pouch for keeping wet items, as well as its multiple zipped pockets for convenient storage, make this transition bag a must-have.

PRANA ORGANIC MACHU PICHU EXOTIC FRUIT AND NUT MIX P295 (113 grams) | Healthy Options (Glorietta 2)
Traveling for race and recreation spells adventure and the adrenaline rush, but the catch is finding hearty food options on the road. You can be “hangry” no more by loading up on Prana Organic’s Machu Pichu trail mix. High in antioxidants (vitamin E and selenium), this organic, vegan, and gluten- and genetically modified organism (GMO)-free snack gives an ample supply of protein, fiber, and iron without scrimping on taste. You’ll love its medley of nourishing organic raw nuts, seeds, and exotic dried fruits, such as Peruvian goldenberries, white mulberries, and goji berries. It’s made in small batches too to ensure that the product is as fresh as it can be.
GARMIN VECTOR 2
Compression leggings keep chafing, muscle strain, and soreness in check post-exercise, and can also keep your legs fresh by improving blood circulation after a long period of travel. Grab a pair of Under Armour’s HeatGear® Armour Zone that wins in the compression department for its four-way stretch fabrication that allows for greater mobility in any direction, a Moisture Transport System that wicks sweat and dries fast, and anti-odor technology that prevents the growth of odor-causing microbes. And the nifty prints on it? It isn’t just for show, as it strategically targets muscle zones, applying for stronger compression where it’s actually needed.
Choosing the best power meter comes down to two things: 1. Necessity 2. Usability. Enter the Garmin Vector 2, which I consider one of the most versatile and data-rich power meters on the market. At first glance, it looks like a pricey add-on to your bike with a slightly questionable build due to the plastic construction of the left and right sensor pods. After six months of testing it and over 2,000 kms of riding on the road, here’s my verdict.
IN YOUR BOX: Vector 2 pedals, 2 pedal pods, Cleats and hardware, Crowfoot installation tool, USB ANT+ Stick™ MANUALS: you need a torque wrench (doesn’t come with the box) TECHNICAL SPECS: Pedal (cartridge and spindle) = 152 grams, Pedal pods = 23 grams, Total per pedals = 175 grams, Total per set = 350 grams UNBOXING: It comes in a great eco-friendly reusable packaging for transporting the pedals. INSTALLATION: Took all of five minutes. It could be two minutes but mine took longer because my bike pedals were stuck on the treads from sweat and dirt. You’ll spend the most time screwing the sensor pods on with the tiny allen wrench. PAIRING: Straightforward. Just like pairing your HR monitor or speed and cadence sensor to your cycling computer. For this, I used the Vector 2 with two different computers Garmin 810 (on my road bike) and Garmin 520 (on triathlon bike).
PRICE P49,900 | TEST DURATION: 7 months | EQUIPMENT: Trek speed concept 7.5 / Pinarello Dogma F8 | CYCLING COMPUTER: Garmin 810 ; Garmin 520 | WATCH: Garmin 920 XT; Garmin Fenix 3 HR | OVERALL RATING: 4.5 / 5
CALIBRATION: Very simple. Short quick spin at 80-100 rpm, unclip, and you’re good to go. SETTING ADVANCED CYCLING DYNAMICS ON THE COMPUTER: You will be given a choice of pedaling efficiency between
the Right (pedal) vs Left (pedal). This allows you to track power distribution. Use the 10-sec power average so that fluctuation between readings aren’t too erratic. GARMIN CONNECT: It’s one of the best apps Garmin has ever developed. Once you sync your cycling computer/ GPS watch, all the data collected is summarized and stored online. Everything you and your coach need in terms of training information can be found there. PROS: Quick & easy installation, Bluetooth / ANT+ compatible, Straight forward calibration, Advanced cycling dynamics & robust data collection, Left/right balance (dual-sensing Vector only), Power: average at various time intervals, Training Stress Score™ (TSS), Normalized Power™ (NP), Intensity Factor™ (IF), Total power in watts, Overall kilojoules, Power zones, Torque effectiveness (TE, dual-sensing Vector only), Pedal smoothness (PS, dualsensing Vector only) CONS: Limited to Look Keo cleats, Poor battery life- likely due to the pods being easily activated by minimal motion, Inconsistent and inaccurate power reading if pedals are not torqued properly.
CONCLUSION: It’s an excellent option as a power meter for both newbies and seasoned riders. Gives real time feedback making it an excellent training tool for power symmetry, efficiency of the pedal stroke, and feel for the ride. The seamless cross platform synchronization of data from Garmin Connect to Training Peaks makes it an excellent performance tracker, which you can share with friends and your coaches. Versus power meters such as Quarq Elsa RS, Stages, SRM Shimano, Power Tap HUB or Rotors INpower, the Garmin Vector 2 wins you over with its easy and quick installation and calibration. If you have more than one bike and and don’t want to spend on more meters, this is a great option. Locally, Garmin Center caries the item and retails for about Php49,00.00 and comes with a 2-year warranty. Their quick turnaround for service, makes the Vector 2 a no-brainer.

HOKA ONE ONE CLIFTON 3
P6,295 | Runnr (Trinoma)
The long wait is over! Hoka One One, the fastest growing premium running shoe brand in the world, has finally landed in the Philippines. Among the models we love—the fly and functional Clifton 3 that offers a seamless speedframe construction, making it an extra- light yet supremely snug choice for running. Gaining more ground is also a breeze with its Meta-Rocker Geometry property, a feature of the midsole consisting of a low heel-toe differential and a sculpted outsole that supports your natural running form from the time your foot lands to the toe-off. All these make this pair worthy of its accolades.
TYR CARBON TANK (WOMEN’S) P4,899 | Runnr (Trinoma)
Why swim with the current when you’re meant to stand out? TYR Carbon Tank’s Flash Mesh feature helps lower body temperature and heart rate and leads to more efficient breathing and less lactic acid build-up, along with its smooth bonded seams that maximize strength and comfort while minimizing drag. RUDY PROJECT TRALYX
P10,950 (with multilaser lenses) Rudy Project (SM Mall of Asia)
We’re all eyes on Rudy Project’s Tralyx, thanks to its PowerFlow System that dissipates heat and glare from the sun, its adjustable nose piece that can be used to adjust the glasses’ height and distance from the face to prevent misting, as well as its shock-resistant, hypoallergenic, high-quality, and light thermoplastic Grilamid frame that renders unrivaled stability, flexibility and durability.
LEZYNE MICRO COLOR GPS P7,500 | Bikezilla, YKK Bikes
The “micro” in Lezyne’s Micro Color GPS device is quite big in bringing incredible cyclocomputer features, such as a vibrantcolored screen to enhance user experience, and turn-by-turn navigation property that operates when paired over Bluetooth Smart to an iOS or Android handheld via the free Lezyne Ally app. Its pairing prowess is further justified by its capacity to simultaneously pair with ANT+™ or Bluetooth enabled power meters, heart rate monitors, and speed/cadence sensors. Feather-light at 29 grams, this ultimate bike computer unit is a heavy hitter too when it comes to battery life (thanks to its 14-hour runtime capability!), 200 hours of ride data, and extreme weather resistance.
EFFETTO MARIPOSA CAFFELATEX
Effetto Mariposa’s innovative tyre sealant Caffelatex earns our approval for its fast sealing action that repairs punctures up to 5 mm (mtb tubeless) and 3 mm (road tubeless), making it ideal for MTB and road tubeless, tubular, and standard tyres. Another thumb’s up for its foaming-action feature that’s activated by wheel movement, which turns this sealant into foam and fills the tyre’s entire internal cavity, making this pro product much more effective against sidewall punctures.

SLIDE YOUR WAY TO A MORE STABLE CORE
IMPROVE CORE STRENGTH AND STABILITY WITH A TOOL THAT YOU CAN CARRY ALMOST EVERYWHERE BY SAUL ANTHONY I. SIBAYAN, MSS, TSAC-F ith summer fast approaching, either you’ll have more time to hit the gym because school’s out or you have less time because you’re on the road more often en route to vacations with friends or family. Whatever the reason, it’s best to keep to a regular schedule of resistance training especially for your core. Improving your core strength and stability can lead to better performance and lower
chances of having overuse injuries like back pain, once summer is over and you decide to plunge headlong into training. You’ll want to pack as light as possible, and not bring so much stuff to stay fit, not to mention you don’t want to be spending hours indoors when you can be outdoors enjoying the sun! I recommend getting the Slidez by SKLZ (Available at Chris Sports, PhP 1,519.00). The Slidez features a low-friction non-marking material that can slide smoothly on almost any surface.
It has a large surface area with an ergonomic thread that provides a comfortable non-slip grip for both your hands and feet. It can also be bound together. Here are four body weight exercises that I like to do with Slidez which will only take 20 to 30 minutes, tops. With all the movements below, don’t forget to breathe properly by inhaling first and exhaling while performing the movement. Remember: Exhale during the Effort. Perform these exercises for 8 to 12 repetitions for 2 to 3 sets.
PIKE for shoulder & core stability, and hamstring & calf flexibility Start in a push-up position with the Slidez under your feet. Brace your core and slowly bring your hips towards the ceiling by pulling your feet close to your hands. Leave your hands and shoulders on the same position as you have started. Your knees should also be straight throughout the movement. Your heels will drop a bit towards the end of the movement, and you’ll feel a stretch on your calves and hamstring muscles. Slowly slide back to the starting position.
KNEE TUCK for the hip flexors and quads, shoulder & core stability Start in a push-up position with the Slidez under your feet. Brace your core and slowly bring your hips towards the ceiling by pulling your knee close to your chest. Leave your hands and shoulders on the same position as you started. Slowly slide back to the starting position.
REVERSE LUNGE Start by standing with one Slidez under your right foot. Simultaneously bend your right leg while bringing your right foot to the back and lowering your body. Try not to hit the floor with your knee. Then, straighten your leg by pulling your leg back to the starting position. Don’t forget to perform this on your other leg. Make it harder by placing the other Slidez under the foot that will not be sliding back.
for hamstring strength Lie on your back with the Slidez on your feet. Bring your heels close to your buttocks, then raise your hips by squeezing your butt (gluteal) muscles. Count to four to slowly bring back your legs to the starting position. Slowly increase the time to a count of 10.

WRITE IT DOWN.
Your best performances can be attributed to the preparation you did beforehand; this includes all the stuff you ate leading to the big event. In order for you to replicate or even improve your performance, you should have a good record of everything you did and consumed. Food and training records help reflect how your body uniquely reacts to your eating plan and you can easily analyze to find ways to refine it especially if you feel your bonking or short of energy prior to a race. Some apps I recommend you should download on your smartphone to help you keep track: Myfitnesspal • Tri Diary: The triathlon diary App • Nike+ Run Club
CONTROL YOUR CARBS.
Aim to get 3-4 grams of complex carbohydrates per pound of body weight or make sure you consume 55-60 percent of your total calorie intake from complex carbohydrates like rice or bread. On race day, you should consume at most 1-2 servings of complex carbs two hours 10

before the race. Knowing how much carbohydrates to consume also helps you avoid unexpected weight gain during the training period of your program.
Rice cakes (puto)
DRINK THE RIGHT AMOUNT OF WATER.
Proper hydration entails replenishing lost fluids and electrolytes that may not be present in your daily water source. Stay away from distilled water. Consider natural drinking water that still has the inherent minerals and electrolytes to improve your hydration. Train your body to drink two to three liters of water, even more if you’re feeling thirsty. Remember that how you hydrate can affect 30-40 percent of your performance energy. Proper hydration helps keep cramps at bay.
GO GREEN. Eating healthy isn’t completely successful if you forget your greens (veggies). Dark green leafy veggies help improve your metabolism and helps your body process carbohydrates faster for better fuel efficiency. Green leafy veggies like lettuce, pechay, and spinach also help eliminate waste products in your gut by decreasing constipation and improving bowel movement. And the best part of all, you don’t need cooking skills to eat it. Just wash, chop and consume. NOURISH YOURSELF IMMEDIATELY. Replenish your body with good quality food after every training session or race within 1-2 hours after an event. This helps initiate your body’s repair process and allows your body to be less susceptible to disease which may cause bigger problems later on. Get a healthy balanced portion of carbs, veggies, protein, and fruits to provide ample nutrients for recovery. After a hard workout or race, I like to eat a meal with rice and a soupy dish like shrimp sinigang or chicken tinola. These dishes are easy to make and have veggies, protein and a truckload of electrolytes in one bowl. Avoid anything too greasy, processed and alcoholic. This hinders faster absorption of nutrients.

hether you are a recreational or elite-level athlete, proper eating or adequate nutrition for performance is an essential part of your training program. The way you consume your food and water as you prepare for a race can be a critical factor in hitting your new PR or winning. That’s because your body can only function effectively if the fuel it receives is provided and processed at the exact moment it’s needed. Knowing this sweet spot—the right time and correct amount to consume nutrition for peak performance— can be a bit daunting. We see athletes getting confused over or burdened with so many questions about food and hydration; some of them tend to overdo it to the point that it backfires on their performance. But with proper planning, diligence, and patience, you can get away with the best eating plan possible for your body without the hassle of getting a doctorate degree in sports nutrition.

THE PHILIPPINES' QUEEN OF LONG-DISTANCE CYCLING
CARMELA PEARSON
36, CORPORATE BANKING AND TREASURY EXECUTIVE; ORGANIZER OF AUDAX PHILIPPINES BREVETS Cycling for 10 years (Team David’s Salon); finisher of the 1,200-km ParisBrest-Paris long-distance cycling event in 2011 and 2015; fastest female (18-34) Lombok, Indonesia qualifying race (October 2016) for Campagnolo Gran Fondo New York; 3rd place female (35-39 age group) Stage 2 of Tour De Bintan, Indonesia (March 2017); first Filipina to qualify for the UCI Gran Fondo World Championships road race in Albi, France (August 2017).

here ain’t no mountain high enough for this queen of Philippine long-distance cycling. Aside from her impressive cycling record, she has climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in the African continent; Mt. Kosciuszko, the highest mountain in the Australian continent, and Mt. Kinabalu, the highest mountain in the Malay archipelago. In the saddle, she started and has grown Audax riding in the Philippines together with David’s Salon founder and veteran triathlete David Charlton. The movement started in 2010, born of her determination to qualify for ParisBrest-Paris in 2011. “There’s never been a Filipina who has ever finished the grueling 1,200 brevet in France, and this race only happens every four years. I would fly to Singapore for work back then and I would always bring my bike to ride the Audax there. I met Jean-Francois Torrelle, the Audax Singapore founder, who asked me if I’m interested to bring the Audax to the Philippines so I can do qualifiers in my home country.” After many exchanges with Audax Club Parisien, the mothership of Audax in France, she secured the license to run it locally, and it has

grown exponentially with the help of the same crew who have supported it from the beginning, including Charlton and Jola Gonzales. “For the past three years, the Audax in the country has also been supported by Michael Spence of Partners in Performance and Cyril Rocke of DataOne. Both Michael and Cyril are good friends of mine and who both believe in these rides.” Their biggest local ride has reached more than 400 participants, not bad at all for something that she envisioned to be low-key and non-profit. “I noticed that we have had an average Yearon-Year growth of 103 percent. In 2012 alone, we only had 79 registered participants for the entire year. Last year, we had 1,701 registrations.” Since starting Audax in 2010, they have put the Philippines in the map of long-distance riding in the world. The races have produced Super Randonneurs (individuals who have finished the 200km, 300km, 400km and 600km Audax distances within 1 season). Since 2010, there have been finishers who have done 1,200-km rides (Paris-Brest-Paris in 2011 and 2015; Hokkaido 1200 in 2016). Carmela says that 2017 is an exciting year as they hope to see the first Filipinos finish the 1,400km London-Edinburgh-London, the 2,200km Race Around Ireland and the 4,800km Race Across America. Her own training time is a challenge, she reveals. “I barely have time to train Monday to Friday because I don’t have a maid or yaya and I have work and family to attend to. Training time has to be short but highquality. This is where the use of power meters come into play and how to make my power zones work for me.” With her busy schedule and her sports adventures, her husband has remained her rock, she says. She and her husband Colin Pearson were longdistance dating when they started – He was a Singapore-based investment banker, she was a tech consultant in Manila. It took the Paris-Brest-Paris brevet for them to cement that relationship. “We would try to see each other every weekend but I still wasn’t 100 percent sure if he was the real deal until we
cycled the entire 1,200km stretch in Brittany, France together. Imagine cycling 1,200km in less than 90 hours, sleep-deprived, tired, and close to losing your sanity. When we finished together, I knew he was for keeps,” Carmela says. The couple has done 21 Audax rides together in total. To make it in male-dominated sports such as cycling, she gives this advice to other women: Enable yourself. “I started cycling late. I was already 27 years old when I first rode a road bike but I had no regrets. Growing up, I was focused on my studies and establishing a good career that would eventually help me fund all my training and cycling adventures. Even now that I’m married and have the full support of my family, I am confident enough to independently do things because I have the right resources to do so.”

manda arrives at the Endurance cover shoot fresh from a 2nd place podium finish in the Century Tuna Subic Bay IM 70.3, with an impressive time of 5:29:57. She describes it as having the toughest conditions so far in three years, with it being very windy and hot. “But I think I had my best race,” she said. She described it as having started with a slow swim (“I'm not a fan of the rolling start,” she quips), with a steady bike, and an all-out run of her life to snatch 2nd in her 40-44 age group. She recalls making a wrong turn and then getting cramps as she sped to the finish. The cramps were nothing, she shrugs. “I've been lucky with injury. Accidents are a different thing though. I have been hit by a motorcycle twice while biking. One rear-ended me. I flew a few meters into the air broke my tailbone. I recovered. So, I guess I was lucky it was not my spine. I was on a walker for a week, and I turned a corner when the tail healed. I can't wag it anymore, though,” she jokes.
With all the races she’s joined, she likes to say that she's earned “Ironman Miles” equivalent to airlines’frequent flier promos. Amanda hold AWA (ALL World Athlete) Gold status in Ironman, which rewards agegroup athletes' hard work, dedication, and performance across Ironman-branded events. “I was #1 for the Philippines. But I can say that there are a lot of fast girls out there, especially in my age group.” Her sweetest, fastest finish was last October in Barcelona, where she was 10th in her age group. “I've wanted to get a top 10 position in an IM abroad. I felt good about achieving that, it was a competitive field. There's always another challenge to conquer.” She has conquered more than a few, since she started triathlon in 2006, when her cousin enrolled her in a charity event. “I had no clue what I was doing. I rode a mountain bike and had a big fluffy towel in transition. I didn't do another triathlon until 2007. They needed a girl to make up a team for Subit (the Subic International Triathlon). It was fun to be on a team (Polo Tri) and to train. I love to compete,” she says. For her, the team aspect was the first draw. “But there is so much more to it: The draw of three sports in one, the complexity of it, being outdoors, discovering new places, braving conditions, testing yourself, it really makes you feel all is possible,” Amanda says. Her day job as a corporate lawyer keeps her on her toes, but making time to train is a non-negotiable. “I train almost every day and take a break every 10 days or so. It takes a lot of balance and commitment. Training is a habit. I try to be flexible but it means early mornings and lots of clothing changes,” she says. Training is her way of relieving stress, she reveals. “There’s nothing like a good bike ride or tough run to cure that. My

triathlon coach Rune Stroem taught me about discipline, hard work, and race smarts. He's very good at putting things in perspective. To train and race is a blessing. We are lucky to do this.” She follows a Purple Patch program with Matt Dixon, which she describes as smart and balanced. “The program is about delivering you to your race healthy and in your best shape. You also need to be successful in all aspects of your life—only part of which is triathlon.” Support for her grueling training comes in the form of family. All her sisters train; her husband Mike Bond, whom she met at Ironman St. George, is a 23-time Ironman finisher. “He has this great attitude about life and racing. He’s always positive.” Their shared passion for triathlon has strengthened the couple. “We understand each other as athletes even if we are very different. Sometimes we need space, but we always want to be together. We don't compete against each other. We know triathlon is not the most important thing in life, but it is just what we love to do.” Her piece of advice for other tri couples: “Be good to your husband and you will get recovery massages.”

O
f the three, ladies, Heish is the veritable endurance sports newbie with only two triathlons so far. But she’s wowed the local triathlon scene with strong finishes in her age group. Triathlon was a long-time dream for Heish, who couldn’t afford a
bike on her college allowance. “I was on the school swim team, and our coach was into tri. I wanted to join races too, but I was too shy to ask my parents for money to buy a bike.” Her first taste of triathlon came in August 2010 when her coach recommended her to swim in a relay in the Ironman 70.3 Camarines Sur. “I saw first-hand what happened and it amazed and fascinated me. Since then I immersed myself in the community,” Heish says. When she started earning a salary, she saved up and one of her first purchases was a bike in 2014, it was right away a Cannondale Slice time trial bike. It was a rocky start. “I was so pumped up and bought myself a tri bike without even knowing how to use it. I fell several times because I tried to learn how to shift, handle the bike and clip my shoe all at the same time.” The spills made her sell the bike and set triathlon aside. It was her boyfriend and triathlete-friends in Saddle Row who encouraged her to take up the sport again. Her win in her first triathlon (1st place Tri United 4 in November 27, 2016) boosted her confidence by a mile. “It was pure ‘wow’ for me that I got to stand on the podium. Yes, it was a beginner-friendly race, but for a newbie like me to stand on the podium was really a big surprise.” Since then, she has never looked back. “I’ve been an athlete all my life but triathlon just takes it to the next level. It reminded me how much determination I have just to finish something that I started. It also made me respect triathletes even more because doing it wasn’t easy.” Her bike is still her bugbear, she admits. This fear is leading her to ride indoors most of the time or to find safer bike tracks to train on. “I am scared to be on the road with all these crazy cars and trucks. My only fear in tri-
athlon is crashing during the bike. I've heard and seen a lot of bike accidents and I don’t want that to ever happen to me. Getting into an accident will just ruin this plan.” She also sought the advice of her friend, Chris Allison, a former pro-cyclist and cycling coach in the Philippines, who once told her to "Go fast on the parts that you know you can go fast and the rest keep it steady.” Tenacity is in her blood; she is inspired by another warrior in her family. “My mom passed away from cervical cancer two weeks before I joined Tri United 4 on November 27. She fought the big "C" for several years and didn’t show any signs of weakness.” She described Tri United 4 as the hardest race she has ever done, knowing that for the first, time, her mother would not be there waiting at the finish line. “But before my Mom left she told me she'll be there and watch me compete and I believed her.” 2017 is Heish’s allout multisport year. She just finished the Tri United Standard Distance in February and placed 3rd in 25-29 age group and plans to do Aquaman Aquathlon in April. Also on her calendar is Triman in June, Tri United Long Distance in July, along with Mt. Mayon Tri in August, Aboitiz in September and maybe another year-end race. Training is done before and after her 8-to-4, and her spin class also counts as her endurance and cardio. “Of course I want to be able to do a full Ironman one day but I don’t consider it as the ultimate goal. Coming from a very competitive sports background where I was a swimmer since the age of 10, it was all about setting targets and reaching goals. I want this to be different. I just want to be able to enjoy the sport, stay healthy, continuously challenge myself, and race without pressure.”
I WAS SO PUMPED UP AND BOUGHT MYSELF A TRI BIKE WITHOUT EVEN KNOWING HOW TO USE IT.

Putting make up is not my thing but I make sure I apply moisturizer. Olay Total Effects serves as my moisturizer and sunblock. Olay Brightening Foaming Cleanser is another favorite. RACE RESULTS
MARCH 4-5, 2017 | CORREGIDOR ISLAND Over 600 participants together with family and friends converged on the historic island fort of Corregidor to experience a picturesque race destination for running enthusiasts—the Corregidor International Half Marathon (CIHM) and Corregidor Marathon (CM), dubbed as the “toughest marathon in Asia." Since the inception of the CIHM in 2010 and CM in 2014, founders Edward Kho and Raymund Martelino have improved the race experience of particpants. This year, they added the 15K Assault, a shorter distance category for runners who may not yet be prepared for a half or full marathon but want to experience the trails, terrains, and thrill of Corregidor just the same. Runners experienced different obstacles, representing the elements of fire, earth, and water: running through a dark tunnel, swimming
in the sea, and passing through burning embers and more. The 15K could become a staple in the Corregidor races. The ongoing renovation of Hotel Corregidor gave runners the chance to go camping, adding to the overall experience. “We need to honor and celebrate what Corregidor represents. To all our past and repeat participants, we wholeheartedly thank you for the support for the two races on the island. We encourage all Corregidor alumni to tell their friends and other people not just about the races; but also of the importance of Corregidor and how unique the island is,” said Kho. THE BULL RUNNER – SUN LIFE DREAM MARATHON
FEBRUARY 19, 2017 | NUVALI, LAGUNA PHOTOS COURTESY OF PHOTO-OPS
There are fun runs and then there are lifechanging marathons such as the The Bull Runner – Sun Life Dream Marathon held last February 19, 2017, where 651 runners crossed the finish line. They make up the 8th batch of Dream Marathoners who completed the program designed by Coach Jim Lafferty together with “The Bull Runner” Jaymie Pizarro. Bank executive, Mon Guinto, loved the full support before and throughout the race. “Running a full marathon is difficult and without the right support in terms of training program, motivation, and logistics; it could be a nightmare for newbies,” said Guinto. “The training program was reasonable and helpful; the talks and encouragement from Jaymie and the rest of the TBR team were great; the hydration, aid, and food stations on race day were a godsend,” he added. The camaraderie and support from Dream Chaser volunteers and fellow runners, were what campaign manager Luis Benedict Paterno enjoyed. “What is truly memorable are the endless high fives and encouraging cheers that you get from the Dream Chasers down to my fellow runners,” said Paterno. The last runner who completed the race, Hazel Pascual-Nespral, looks back at the event with amazement and awe. “I can’t imagine how I was able to run, even if my feet were so tired and angry they wanted to kill me. Finishing a marathon is indeed a triumph of will over reason, proof that anything is possible,” said Nespral. The Bull Runner – Sun Life Dream Marathon is the first and only event in the world that
is designed for first-time marathoners. Each participant who crosses the finish line before the nine-hour cutoff is considered a winner. It was recognized as one of the top 10 marathons in the country by Runner’s World Philippines in 2012 and 2013. Slots for the 2017 batch were all taken in online registration in less than three hours. “We call it the Dream Marathon for three reasons. First, running a 42-km is the ultimate dream of most serious runners. Second, when I finally completed my first marathon, I had the deep desire to help others do the same. And, lastly, we wanted to create a race that was customized for a first-timer,” said founder Pizarro. Registered runners were entitled to free running clinics or Bull Sessions led by Coach Francis Diano and free lectures called Bull Circles discussing topics from nutrition to essential gear. One week before the marathon, runners enjoyed a fun-filled celebration to cap off weeks of training at the Send Off Party hosted by TBR Dream alumni Christine Jacob-Sandejas and Ton Gatmaitan. On race day, runners ran through the rolling hills of Nuvali as they enjoyed the cool, fresh air and panoramic views of Tagaytay Ridge, Mount Makiling, and Laguna de Bay. Nuvali has been the venue partner of TBR since 2010. TBR Sun Life Dream Marathon finishers include Sandejas, Maricel Laxa-Pangilinan, Daniel Matsunaga, Ruby Gan, Bearwin Meily, Mico Halili, and Eric Virata aka DJ Slick Rick. Registration for TBR Sun Life Dream Marathon will open in August 2017. For more information, visit www. thebullrunner.com and www.tbrdream.com.

TEAM DAVID’S SALON TO RACE 3,000 MILES ACROSS AMERICA PHOTOS COURTESY OF TEAM DAVID'S SALON
On June 13, 2017, the first Philippine team will join the ranks of ultracyclists from around the globe to conquer Race Across America (RAAM), the “world’s toughest bicycle race.” Team David’s Salon will be the first mixed relay team from the Philippines and Southeast Asia to attempt finishing RAAM, that spans 3000 miles starting in Oceanside, California; climbs 175,000 feet, crosses 12 states, and finishes in Annapolis, Maryland, the East Coast sailing mecca. The Philippine team will be composed of Audax Randonneurs Philippines founder Carmela Serina Pearson; Colin Anthony Pearson, a finisher of multiple world cycling tours like Gran Fondo Marmotte (France), Super Randonneur (Philippines), ParisBrest-Paris (1,230km cycling race in France) among many others; 15-time Audax finisher and Paris-BrestParis finisher Guillaume D'Aboville; and Vanessa Bandoy Hans, 7-time Audax finisher and 4-time French National Junior MTB champion. The cut-off time is 9 days, so the team’s goal is to cover at least at least 600kms per day, which depends on the weather. Pearson says their ultimate goal is to finish within cut-off since they have no idea the competition they face. “Finishing would be a great milestone already,” she said. Hans points out the challenges: "It’s tough because we’re going through different terrain. The distance absolutely makes it one of a kind. The different temperatures that we’ll be going through; so that’s all very challenging in all aspects."
The team’s strategy will be to ride in teams of two, shifts of seven hours and to swap every 20 minutes. For seven hours, each cyclist will be riding every 20 minutes, following a set of guidelines (check http:// www.raceacrossamerica.org/how-to-qualify.html). David’s Salon Inc. CEO and president David Charlton will be going with the team to the USA, along with crew members who are experts in long-distance cycling and a support team to look after the members. RAAM has become a platform for racers to raise awareness and money for charities of their choice. Team David’s Salon will be supporting FrancePhilippines United Action Foundation, which supports the victims of Typhoon Haiyan in 2013 through projects involving Disaster Rehabilitation, Children’s Welfare and Health. Since 1980, RAAM has become a global cycling event with over 35 countries attempting the feat. The route travels west to east, traversing three major mountain ranges (Sierra, Rocky, and Appalachian), crosses America’s longest rivers (Colorado, Mississippi, Missouri, and Ohio), and the Great Plains. It will also pass through iconic American landmarks Mojave and Sonoran Deserts, Monument Valley, Great Plains, and Gettysburg. RAAM is run by cycling professionals, led by Fred Boethling, president (2X RAAM finisher); Rick Boethling, vice president and executive director; and Jeff Magnuson, race director. DAVID MARX AND ALBERTO DE GIOANNINI
Effeto Mariposa founder and owner Alberto de Gioannini and Japan-based distributor David Marx of RGT Enterprises cycled with local cycling enthusiasts in Tagaytay during their visit to the Philippines last March 18-21. It was their first time in the country where met with the exclusive distributor of Effeto Mariposa products in the Philippines, Unison Bikes. The brand name, Effeto Mariposa, “the butterfly effect” is a mix of Italian and Spanish, which translates to –where small changes lead to major consequences—the brand pays homage to “chaos science," says De Gioannini. "We believe that small changes can lead major differences. This drives us to redefine each new product so that it gives our customers at least a tiny yet clear advantage," he adds. Effeto Mariposa’s products includes bicycle torque wrenches, the first synthetic-latex tire sealant and viscoelastic frame protection. “All output
has emanated from the simple need to better products for our own use. The challenge was to innovate or improve upon something already available,” says De Gioannini. Some of Effeto Mariposa’s most popular products in over 40 countries: CAFFELATEX – a truly innovative tire sealant that doesn’t contain ammonia or other aggressive chemicals. It turns into foam when agitated, spreads easily without unbalancing the wheel. Used successfully for road and off-road cycling, in tubeless, tubular and innertube applications. HOW IT WORKS: with the addition of silicate particles, Caffelatex moves slowly through holes, allowing the sealing ingredient more time to heal the puncture. Caffelatex’s advantage over classic latex-based sealants is its foaming behavior activated by wheel movement; it fills the tire’s entire internal cavity, making Caffelatex much more effective against sidewall punctures. ESPRESSO- an inflate and repair cartridge for the demanding cyclists
and racers, both on and off-road. Ammonia-free and works for road and XC tyres and the only cartridge functioning also on lenticular wheels HOW IT WORKS: the flexible silicone tube of the nozzle fits directly on Presta valves, allowing the use of Espresso even with the spokes close to the valve area or lenticular wheels. Thanks to the lack of adapters on the hose, the special repairing foam (Caffelatex based) goes into the tyre without leaks. OCTOPLUS KIT –the only universal pad-replacement for bicycle helmets, inspired by octopus legendary grabbing ability. It is intended both as a fit and comfort upgrade to any helmet and as an effective way of replacing worn-out pads on a functional helmet. Easy to use and customize; machine washable HOW IT WORKS: the main star-shaped element adapts to any XC/road helmet, providing optimal comfort. Several padding elements allow to get a customized fit, they can be cut (using scissors) positioning them exactly on pressure points.

The SBR.ph Tri Series, the only multisport race series designed and organized for newbies and amateurs, is back and bigger than ever. For 2017, it’s introducing the “Lite” category for those newbies who might need a little bit more convincing or veterans who need to brush up on skills after a long hiatus. With the “Lite” category, the SBR. ph Tri series uncovers another stepping stone for newbies to reach their dreams of completing longer triathlon distances in the future. The distances of the Tri Series are challenging enough for the experienced athletes, yet still doable for the newbies. There is no cutoff time and nearly all types of bikes are allowed—mountain bikes, folding bikes, road bikes, loaners, or handme-downs. “You can use any bike that you have in your garage. What’s important for us is that we get you out there and start living an active lifestyle,” says Carlos de Guzman, founder of SBR.ph and race organizer. Mark your calendars for the 2017 edition of the SBR.ph Tri Series:

CIRCULO VERDE CHASEDOWN MARCH 19, 2017 | CIRCULO VERDE, PASIG CITY

The Philippines’ entries to the international Red Bull Last Stand in San Antonio, Texas were culled from more than 100 Pinoy fixed-gear enthusiasts who signed up for the 1st annual Circulo Verde Chasedown. Metro Race Collective, in partnership with Ortigas & Company, organized the Chasedown—an exciting fixed gear, eliminator style criterium event held in Ortigas’s new commercial development, Circulo Verde. In the eliminator format, only the strongest survive. The slowest rider of each 1-kilometer lap around Circulo Verde is taken out of the race until one winner outlasts the competition, which makes for tense, dramatic racing that leaves little room for error. Gracing the event was world-renowned fixed-gear cyclist and Red Bull athlete Addison Zawada of the US, and USA Cycling race director, Ravi Rajcoomar. “I’m here to hang out and chill with everyone here in the Philippines,” said Zawada. “This is a really fun and enjoyable race for the crowd. It’s really spectator-friendly.” Before the criterium, Zawada earlier led dozens of fixed-gear riders on a 10-km friendly ride from the University of the Philippines-Diliman campus to Circulo Verde.
“This my first time here in Manila and it was great to see the level of competition,” said Rajcoomar. “It was really, really high. Cycling can flourish here in the Philippines,” he added. The Fixed Geared Men’s race was the highlight of the event, which saw Ronnel Hualda practically dominate each lap at top speeds of 35kph or more, with some nail-biting moments. It proved to be the cyclist’s strongest showing, coming in over major competition that included Philippine National Team (Go for Gold) member, Jerry Roa Aquino. Hualda’s victory in the Fixed Gear Men’s race cements his place for the Red Bull Last Stand, which takes place later this year at the Alamo, in San Antonio, Texas, USA. “First time ko maglaro ng ganito,” said Hualda. “So masaya ‘ko kasi first time ko naglaro nang gan’tong klase na karera, nanalo ako!” For Red Bull ‘Last Stand’, the typical crit race format is getting a Texas-style overhaul with the new ‘Eliminator’ format. In this cutthroat setup, the rider who crosses the finish line last on each lap gets eliminated until there’s just one rider left to take their final celebration lap. Other highlights included the Fixed Women (open), which saw a well-earned victory from Japo Parcero. “Well, I didn’t expect it because this is my first criterium race but it feels awesome,” said Parcero.
