YOU’RE THE STAR OF THE STORY! Do you need an idea or three to get you back out exploring the world? We’ve got you covered. We are the Library, after all: a magical place of knowledge and discovery! We want to help you make memories and maybe inspire a new tradition with your family, partner, or friends.

How is the Library going to bring you this magic? Explore our Choose Your Own Adventure boards in Youth (downstairs) or Adult & Teen (upstairs). Do a little “eeny, meeny, miny, moe” to decide which colorful envelope you want to choose from, and just go for it.

Go the extra mile for awesome prizes! Post a photo of yourself doing the activity on the Library’s Facebook page, or on Instagram using #nlpladventure. (Include the activity card in the photo!)

Every photo gives you a chance to win one of four prize baskets filled with amazing entertainment that will get you started on another day of fun.

2021 Summer Learning Challenge Summer is the perfect time to try new things. Are you ready to take the Challenge? Monday, June 7–Saturday, July 31 Register for Reading Colors Your World! starting Monday, June 7. The first week, June 7–12, is for registration only. Pick up your activity log in either Youth Services (Birth–8th Grade) or Adult & Teen Services (7th–12th Grade and Adults). Junior High students can participate in both programs. Complete the Challenge by doing activities from the list on your activity log, and earn prizes! Logs are available at the Library and newlenoxlibrary.org/summer. The completed log is redeemable for prizes from Monday, June 14–Saturday, July 31.

Teens (7th–12th Grade) & Adults

Finish the log by completing any combination of 24 activities to get a prize bag, virtual raffle entry, a completion certificate for school, and a free book!

You’ll be able to send us an email or text when you complete a row so we can check you in for weekly prizes.

A Judging Panel of Local Artists

Challenge Tuesday, June 1–Wednesday, June 30 for Adults & Teens The New Lenox Library will be hosting a Visual Art Challenge open to both Adults as well as Teens in Grades 7–12. The event is part of our 2021 Summer Learning Challenge Reading Colors Your World! We look forward to this opportunity to celebrate our community's creativity! Please submit your paintings, drawings, sculptures, photographs, digital art—whatever type of art you make, we want it! Full details, rules, and submission forms can be found on our website at newlenoxlibrary.org/artcontest.

Sue Shanahan has spent her career as an artist bringing children to life in her illustrations. In addition to contributing work to various children’s books and magazines, she has been commissioned by such clients as Walt Disney World and Auyrn Inc. Oprah Winfrey has purchased Sue’s art for her private collection and had her as a guest on her “Favorite Things” show. Sue’s work has also found its way into the White House, where her portrait of Chelsea Clinton hung in the former First Lady’s study. @sueshanahanart on Instagram Mokena-based artist Kimberly Carter is an illustrator and licensed surface designer. Whether drawing digitally, with pen and ink or painting with watercolor or gouache, her work spans multiple disciplines; sometimes it’s a combination of both digital and analogue. Whatever the medium might be, she is passionate about creating art for kids, sweet characters and custom hand lettering. Sticker by Letter Community Art Project Adults, Teens & Families starting June 1 Want to be part of creating a beautiful community artwork? Participate in our “Sticker by Letter” art project! Think of it as a giant paint-by-number except with stickers. Every participant will get us one step closer to revealing what the final masterpiece is! All Summer Summer Storybook Walk: The Day the Crayons Quit All Ages June–August New Lenox Village Commons Circle

Have an outdoor reading adventure while you take a summer stroll around the Commons! Discover why the crayons have left their crayon box home and quit as you walk around the circle path and follow the lamppost signs that contain pages of the book The Day the Crayons Quit by Drew Daywalt. Look for a new Storybook Walk book every season.

T-Rexplorers Dinosaur Discovery

In this 3-week program, kids will learn to cast, bait, and take fish off the hook. Fishing poles and bait are supplied. Class occurs rain or shine. Masks are required to attend. An adult must be present and will need a fishing license if they are planning to assist their children (16 and under do not need fishing licenses). A signed waiver is also required. Register for one session only (June or July). Community Service Take & Make: Beaded Mask Holders

What Does Test Optional Really Mean? Grades 7–12 Monday, July 12 from 6–7 pm Zoom Meeting

We have a take 'n make opportunity that is creative, crafty, and for a worthy-cause. Help your local senior citizens by making beaded mask keepers. These visually appealing mini-lanyards keep masks safe and clean. We will be donating them to local assisted living health care homes. Pick up your kit at the library starting June 15. Limit 2 service hours. Available while supplies last.

COVID-19 brought the cancelation of standardized tests in Spring 2020. Many colleges joined the growing list of universities to announce a test-optional admission process. Some colleges have announced an extension of this policy for Fall 2021, while others made this a permanent change. Thomas Jaworski of Quest College Consulting will help families gain insight on what it means for a college to review an application without standardized test scores, while also identifying the pros and cons of submitting these exams. A Night of Color

The Long Shadow Film Screening, Director Q&A

Have you ever looked at your favorite color and wonder how it came to be? Now you can learn by joining us for a night of exploring colors! Pick up a paint by number kit from the library and join speaker Laura Keyes as she presents “Every Color Has a Story: History of the Palette.” Work on your paint by number art as you listen to the history of all the colors you’re using to create it!

Join New Lenox LIbrary and RAILS libraries across the state for a virtual screening of the PBS award-winning documentary The Long Shadow, along with a Q&A with director Frances Causey on June 24.

The film follows former CNN Senior Producer, TED contributor, and Emmy Award-winning Director Frances Causey as she traces her family’s legacy of white privilege, placing it in the context of the history of anti-black racism in the United States that began with slavery and continues to impact our society today.

Genealogy Club Case Study: The Gocke Family from Germany to West Virginia & Beyond with Meghan Moran

The process for applying to become credentialed through the Board for Certification of Genealogists includes the development of a Kinship Determination Project (KDP). The project requires documented evidence of individuals through three ancestral generations. This case study will examine the development of a KDP, some strategies used to uncover information about elusive family members, and how to apply similar strategies to solve genealogical problems. A Zoom link will be emailed to registrants on June 7. Registration required to attend program. Meghan Moran is a librarian and genealogist. She received her B.A. in English Literature from Loyola Marymount University, her Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science from San Jose State University, and her certificate in Genealogical Research from Boston University. Meghan’s research focuses on Irish genealogy and genetic genealogy. She regularly teaches genealogy topics in the Chicagoland area, volunteers as a DNA “Search Angel,” and is the Membership Chair of the Tinley Moraine Genealogists. New Lenox Public Library

Genealogists have many reasons to locate living relatives—from connecting with long lost cousins to performing collateral searches to break down brick walls. Learn the most effective ways to find living people using Internet search engines and resources. In this session you’ll learn not only why it is important to locate living relatives, but how to leverage the power of the Internet to make certain you have the correct contact information. You’ll also learn how making contact with the living can hone your genealogy research skills and actually help you break down those brick walls.

Mixology Class

Thomas MacEntee is a genealogy professional specializing in using technology and social media to improve genealogy research and to connect with the family history community. He has over 42 years of experience researching family history. Thomas describes himself as a lifelong learner with a background in a multitude of topics who has finally figured out what he does best: teach, inspire, instigate, and serve as a curator and go-to-guy for concept nurturing and inspiration. Thomas is a big believer in success, and that we all succeed when we help each other find success.

Looking for something fun to do on a Thursday night? Look no more! Join us for a brain-busting evening at Beggars Pizza in New Lenox (650 Maple Street, New Lenox, IL).

This program will be presented both in person and through Zoom. Registration required to attend program. Tiffanee Fouts has been traveling her whole life, and now uses that passion and knowledge she’s gained along the way to help her clients plan their perfect trips.

Enjoy pizza and drinks and answer questions on a multitude of topics. Play by yourself or as part of a team for prizes! Registration required to attend program.

The Fouts family has always cared deeply about travel and the memories they would make on vacation, and now they get to help families do the same. Tiffanee has helped plan weekend get-aways, family reunions, custom itineraries and tours of Europe, romantic allinclusives, cruises, and trips to Africa, Asia, Australia—and yes, even Antarctica!

Masks will be required to enter the restaurant. Requirements within the facility are determined by restaurant staff.
