High Five! Did you know that everyday fun with your child increases their early literacy skills? Singing, talking, reading, writing, and playing all add to this vital part of their growth! Reading helps children learn new words, learn how language

and they often repeat it! The more you talk with your child using interesting words, and encourage your child to talk by asking them questions, the more easily they will learn to read. Songs slow down language and help children hear the smaller

sounds that make up words. We sing “Twink–le, twink-le, lit-tle star,” but when we talk, we say “twinkle” or “little” much faster.
Let’s write!
Writing helps children understand that the words they speak can be written down, and then read and spoken by someone else. They begin to understand that those squiggles on the page have meaning. Playing is how children learn best. They are active learners who

gain knowledge by “doing.” They push, touch, taste, shake and test how things work. Sometimes play is messy—that’s okay.

1,000 Books Before Kindergarten This free program encourages you to read 1,000 books with your child before they enter school. By reading just three stories a day, you and your child will have read over 1,000 books in one year! Illogical by Emmanuel Acho. With a step-by-step guide to finding our callings and shifting our mindsets, enlivened by stories from Acho’s life and other illogical pioneers, and the Bible, Acho asks us to replace the limits set for us, and which we set for ourselves, with a world of possibility. The Children on the Hill by Jennifer McMahon. A genre-defying new novel, inspired by Mary Shelley’s masterpiece Frankenstein, that brilliantly explores the eerie mysteries of childhood and the evils perpetrated by the monsters among us. Sea of Tranquility by Emily St. John Mandel. A novel of art, time travel, love, and plague that takes the reader from Vancouver Island in 1912 to a dark colony on the moon five hundred years later, unfurling a story of humanity across centuries and space.
The Beauty of Dusk by Frank Bruni. A wise and moving memoir about aging, affliction, and optimism after partially losing his eyesight. Bruni hauntingly recounts his adjustment to this daunting reality, a medical and spiritual odyssey that involved reappraising his own priorities and gathering wisdom from longtime friends and new acquaintances who had navigated their own traumas and afflictions. Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt. A a charming, witty and compulsively readable exploration of friendship, reckoning, and hope that traces a widow’s unlikely connection with a giant Pacific octopus. One of Us is Dead by Jeneva Rose. Opulence. Sex. Betrayal. Sometimes friendship can be deadly. Meet the women of Buckhead—a place of expensive cars, huge houses, and competitive friendships.

Close-Up On War by Mary Cronk Farrell. Although she had no formal photographic training and had never traveled more than a few hundred miles from Paris, Catherine Leroy left home at age 21 to travel to Vietnam and document the faces of war. Someday We’ll Find It by Jennifer Wilson. A riveting coming-ofage story about a girl sleepwalking through a hot Midwestern summer until the sudden reappearance of her mother— and a new boy in town—challenge her to dream bigger. Once Upon a K-Prom by Kat Cho. While the rest of the school is giddy over prom, Elena would rather spend her time working to save the local community center, the one place that’s always made her feel like she belonged. So when international K-pop superstar Robbie Choi shows up at her house to ask her to prom, Elena is more confused than ever.

Fall 2022 New Lenox Library Guide
Fiction with Monica & Juliana Cult Classic by Sloane Crosley. One idle weeknight, our heroine is at a reunion dinner when she ducks out to buy cigarettes. On the way back, she runs into an ex-boyfriend. And then another. And...another. This new novel combines the breathtaking twists and turns of a psychological thriller with the willshe-won’t-she of a romantic comedy.
The Women Could Fly by Megan Giddings. A piercing dystopian novel about the unbreakable bond between a young woman and her mysterious mother, set in a world in which witches are real and single women are closely monitored. The Novelist by Jordan Castro. In this funny, inventive, and surprisingly tender first novel, we follow a young man over the course of a single morning as he tries and fails to write an autobiographical novel, finding himself instead drawn into the infinite spaces of Twitter, quotidian rituals, and his own mind.
And There He Kept Her by Joshua Moehling. When two teenagers break into a house on a remote lake, what starts as a simple burglary turns into a nightmare for all involved. Emmett Burr has secrets he’s been keeping in his basement for over 20 years, and he’ll do anything to keep his past from being revealed.
Belle Greene by Alexandra Lapierre & Tina Kover. Belle is among New York society’s most sought after intellectuals. She also hides a secret. Although she looks white, she is African American, the daughter of a famous black activist who sees her desire to hide her origins as the consummate betrayal.
The Hidden One by Linda Castillo. Over a decade ago, a beloved Amish bishop disappeared without a trace. When skeletal remains showing evidence of foul play are unearthed, his disappearance becomes even more sinister.
Non-Fiction with Monica & Juliana Happy-Go-Lucky by David Sedaris. Capturing what is most unexpected, hilarious, and poignant about recent upheavals, personal and public, Sedaris expresses both the misanthropy and desire for connection that drive us all. If we must live in interesting times, there is no one better to chronicle them than the incomparable David Sedaris.
Escaping Gravity: My Quest to Transform NASA and Launch a New Space Age by Lori Garver & Walter Isaacson. Including insider NASA conversations and insights on how the US space industry has been transformed to become the envy of the world and is ushering in a new space age, this is a blueprint for how to drive productive and meaningful change.
Nightmare Fuel: The Science of Horror Films by Nina Nesseth. Explore the strange and often unexpected science of fear through the lenses of psychology and physiology. How do horror films get under our skin? What about them keeps us up at night, even days later? And why do we keep coming back for more?
Linked: Conquer LinkedIn. Land Your Dream Job. Own Your Future. by Omar Garriott, Jeremy Schifeling, & Lindsey Pollak. Step-bystep, former LinkedIn employees demystify LinkedIn and empowers everyone with the most important strategies to win the job search game.
Time is a Mother by Ocean Vuong. In this deeply intimate second poetry collection, Ocean Vuong searches for life among the aftershocks of his mother’s death, embodying the paradox of sitting within grief while being determined to survive beyond it.
The No-Nonsense Guide to Divorce: Getting Through and Starting Over by Lori Hellis. Written by an experienced family law attorney, this is an often blunt, sometimes funny, always empathetic look at one of the most challenging times in your life.

Find Your Roots in Naturalization with Steve Szabados (Rescheduled) Presented by Genealogy Club Adults Tuesday, October 11, 6–7:45 pm Virtual Program on Zoom Naturalization papers for our immigrant ancestors are important clues in describing our Americanization. Come and learn more about the history of the process, changes in the requirements and where to find copies of these documents. In 1906, the U.S. Congress changed the immigration law and required specific additional information in the naturalization petitions. The petition then included when and where the immigrant arrived. It also listed when and where they were born. The naturalization of our ancestors establishes our family roots in America. They were part of the wave of emigration that left their homeland with the hope of finding work and a better life. They saw immigration to America as their last chance. Learn more about how to research and record the details of their journey to arrival and naturalization. Registration starts September 11. Steve Szabados is a genealogy lecturer and author. His mission is to share his passion for Family History with as many people as he can. Researching his ancestors since 2000, he’s traced back to the 1600s in the United States and the 1730s in Poland, Germany, Bohemia, Hungary, Slovakia, and Slovenia.
Jean Baptiste Antoine De Verger, Artist. Soldiers in Uniform (a soldier of the First Rhode Island Regiment and a New England militiaman). USA, Rhode Island, 1781. Library of Congress.
