Lobby, building entrance renovations to begin mid-2022 The Library began our multiyear building remodel by replacing the Meeting Room carpeting and our failing HVAC system. In 2022, the Lobby area will undergo a far more visible change. We are improving the entrances and opening more of the building for public use. Let’s take a look at new possibilities.

The Lobby entrance will be opened for easier access with strollers, wheelchairs and other assistive devices.

Heavy entrance doors will be replaced with automatic.

The Digital Media Lab will move downstairs into a bigger space with more creative opportunities for all ages.

The Patron Services desk (right) will be clearly in view when you walk in.

Self-checkout, hold shelves, and a Print & Scan station (left) will be conveniently located for quick use.

Discover your family roots with the Library’s genealogy resources

By Karen Meyer, Adult & Teen Services Specialist

Do you want to know where your ancestors came from? The New Lenox Public Library offers an abundance of resources to research your family roots.

“Most of us know where we came from—Mom and Dad,” says Pam Taylor, Genealogy Specialist for the Library. “We either asked them when and where they were born or found out from another relative. Many of us also know when and where our grandparents were born.

“But how many of us know where our greatgrandparents—and there are eight of them!—came from?

Were they born in the United States? Were they born across the pond? Did they immigrate to the United States and if so, what country did they come from? The New Lenox Public Library can help you find those answers.”

The Library subscribes to several magazines and databases that you can use to discover your family history.

One of the most popular genealogy databases is Ancestry.com, which can help you research who your ancestors were, where they lived, what their occupations were, and whether they served in the military. The Library also subscribes to the military database Fold3, which can help you acquire your ancestors’ military records.

Magazines such as Family Tree and Internet Genealogy

provide other available resources for you to use in your research or contact for additional help.

The Library also stocks a selection of genealogy books that are great sources for learning how to obtain records for naturalization, marriage, military service, birth and death, ship manifests, census documents, and much more.

We also host a Genealogy Club which meets on the second Tuesday of each month. The club is open to any adult, and registration is normally not required except for virtual Zoom meetings.

“Each month, our Genealogy Club presents a different program related to genealogy or history to help us understand and learn about researching our family history,” says Pam. “You can come once or every month! We also offer one-on-one sessions to get you started with your research or help you hurdle a genealogy brick wall.”

Job seekers of all kinds, we're here to help! The New Lenox Library is partnering with the Workforce Services Division of Will County to bring you the Mobile Workforce Center!

The Mobile Workforce Center offers a variety of services for job seekers, including computers with internet access for online applications and job searches, the ability to create/revise a resume and a job board with listings from Will County businesses.

A Certified Professional Resume Writer and Certified Professional Career Coach, and will be available to assist you with any job seeking questions you may have.

The bus will be located in front of the library. Resources will be available on a first come, first served basis. Registration not required.

teen artist of the month

Cynthia Kosteck What inspires you?

I wouldn’t say a specific thing inspires me but more a person inspires me to always create. My art teacher, Amanda, really always shows me how art can be a part of your everyday life no matter how bad or good said art is. She’s always teaching and trying new things with me, and it really sparks my inspiration in what I should create next. Honestly, wouldn’t be as half a good artist as I am without her.

Do you have any habits and routines when you create?

I wouldn’t say that I have a concrete routine or habit when I’m creating. Usually, an idea will come into mind and either I’ll draw a sketch immediately or wait a while to think it out then create when I feel the idea is at its peak potential. If I had to think of a habit of mine, it would be that I almost always forget to erase the leftover pencil lines before laying down any color that’ll be affected by it. It’s a problem.

Do you keep a sketchbook?

I keep too many sketchbooks lol. I’m great at starting sketchbooks but almost never finishing them. I have a sketchbook for actual sketching, one for full bodies, one for portraits, and the list goes on. All my sketchbooks serve a specific purpose but the one that means the most to me is my mini sketchbook because it houses the most random artworks.

Do you have favorite themes?

My favorite themes are probably beauty and imperfection. I love making things that are beautiful, but I feel that they’re never fully finished without at least a few mistakes here or there. You can look at any of my pieces and I can guarantee you’ll find at least 2 imperfections.

Do you do any research when you create art?

I don’t often research when I create art unless I’m drawing something unfamiliar to me. If I’m drawing an animal, I’ll research its anatomy or if I’m drawing curly hair, I’ll research hairstyles that suit the curls best. I have the tendency to use references when I create to provide me with a base to work from. I typically look up a pose if I’m drawing something full body since I can never come up with anything that looks good.

What is the best piece of advice you’ve been given?

This is more about pursing art as a fulltime career, but I’ve never been able to forget it. “You need at least 2/3 things to be a desirable artist to work with. You need to be fast, good, and nice/pleasant. If you have them all you’re set.” Although this never truly applies to the art I create, I’ve always kept in mind in the case I decide to pursue art as a career.

Adults Wednesday, January 13, 6–8 pm Beggars Pizza (650 Maple Street, New Lenox) Looking for something to do on a Thursday night? Look no more! Join us for a brain-busting evening at Beggars Pizza in New Lenox.

Enjoy pizza and drinks and answer questions on a multitude of topics.

Form a powerhouse team or play by yourself for prizes! Registration starts December 13.

Paddle Craft Safety

Teens & Adults Tuesday, February 22, 6–7:30 pm Zoom Learn how to choose the correct type of paddle craft, what required items all paddlers must have, and recommended items. Learn how to choose the correct life jacket, file a float plan, handle emergencies, and about the effects of cold water immersion and hypothermia.

This program will be recorded and shared on our YouTube channel.

Registration starts January 22.

Community-Led Group

Teens & Adults Monday, January 24, 6–7:30 pm Monday, February 28, 6–7:30 pm Meeting Room AB Make mats for the homeless by reusing plastic grocery bags. A great opportunity for teens needing community service hours! No court-ordered community service accepted.

If you are interested in bringing a group, it is required you contact the community group leader.

Plarn and crochet hooks may be available through the Library’s Digital Media Lab.
