Lobby renovations start this Summer The Library began our multiyear building remodel by replacing the Meeting Room carpeting and installing a new HVAC system. This Summer, the Lobby area will undergo a far more visible change. We are improving the entrances and opening more of the building for public use.

While we’re very excited for the finished renovation, this does mean that the Library will be under construction likely into 2023. While we will strive to minimize inconvenience to you, temporary changes will be in place and noise levels may fluctuate.

Summer 2022 New Lenox Library Guide
Fiction with Monica & Juliana Heartbroke by Chelsea Bieker. In California’s Central Valley, everyone is seeking or sabotaging love under an unrelenting sun. Heartbroke brims over with each character’s attempt to salvage—or sabotage—grace where they can find it.
Eat Only When You’re Hungry by Lindsay Hunter. GJ’s been an addict his whole adult life, disappearing for days at a time, but this absence feels different. As his father Greg drives from West Virginia to the bizarroland that is Florida, the urgency to find GJ recedes, and truths about Greg’s mistakes—as a father, a husband, a man—are uncovered.
Memphis by Tara M. Stringfellow. In summer of 1995, ten-year-old Joan, her mother, and her younger sister flee her father’s violence, seeking refuge at her mother’s ancestral home in Memphis. Unfolding over seventy years through a chorus of voices, Memphis weaves back and forth in time to show how the past and future are forever intertwined.
All the Lovers in the Night by Mieko Kawakami. When Fuyoku stops one day on a Tokyo street and notices her reflection in a storefront window, what she sees is a drab, awkward, and spiritless woman who has lacked the strength to change her life and decides to do something about it.
The Lady’s Mine by Francine Rivers. A sweeping, romantic tale of a displaced New England suffragette, a former Union soldier disinherited by his Southern family, and the town they join forces to save.
Insomnia by Sarah Pinborough. Emma Averell worries that her crippling insomnia is a sign that she’s slowly going insane—like the mother she’s worked so hard to leave in her past.
Non-Fiction with Monica & Juliana Eating Salad Drunk: Haikus for the Burnout Age by Comedy Greats by Gabe Henry. Jokes and haikus have a common goal: to pack the greatest punch in the most succinct way possible. Today’s biggest names in comedy come together to do just that, with hilarious, poignant, and (sometimes) dirty haikus about living and coping in our modern burnout age.
Letter to a Stranger: Essays to the Ones Who Haunt Us by Colleen Kinder. Sixtyfive extraordinary writers grapple with this mystery: How can an ephemeral encounter with a stranger leave such an eternal mark? God I Feel Modern Tonight: Poems from a Gal about Town by Catherine Cohen. Poems of heartbreak and sex, self-care and self-critique, urban adventures and love on the road from the millennial quarantine comedy queen.
The Founders: The Story of Paypal and the Entrepreneurs Who Shaped Silicon Valley by Jimmy Soni. A gripping account of PayPal’s origins and a vivid portrait of the geeks and contrarians who made its meteoric rise possible—later working with Tesla, Facebook, YouTube, SpaceX, Yelp, Palantir, and LinkedIn.
Garbo by Robert Gottlieb. Strikingly glamorous and famously inscrutable, Greta Garbo managed to infiltrate the world’s subconscious; the end of her film career, when she was thirty-six, only made her more irresistible. She was looked on as a unique phenomenon, a sphinx, a myth, the most beautiful woman in the world, but in reality she was a Swedish peasant girl, uneducated, naïve, and always on her guard. Graphic Novel Non-Fiction with Juliana And Now I Spill the Family Secrets: An Illustrated Memoir by Margaret Kimball. Using old diary entries, hospital records, home videos, and other archives, Margaret pieces together a narrative map of her childhood—her mother’s bipolar disorder, her grandmother’s institutionalization, and her brother’s increasing struggles—in an attempt to understand what no one likes to talk about: the fractures in her family.
Good Talk by Mira Jacob. Mira Jacob’s touching, often humorous, and utterly unique graphic memoir takes readers on her journey as a first-generation American. At an increasingly fraught time for immigrants and their families, Good Talk delves into the difficult conversations about race, sex, love, and family that seem to be unavoidable these days. As earnest and moving as they are sometimes laugh-out-loud funny, these are the stories that have formed one American life.
Barely Functional Adult: It’ll All Make Sense Eventually by Meichi Ng. Featuring a swaddled, gender-neutral, Barely Functional Adult as its protagonist, who says all the things we think but cannot say, this book is equal parts humorous and heartbreaking as it spans a spectrum of topics including imposter syndrome, therapy, friendships, first loves, letting go of exes, and just trying to find your purpose in the world. Prepare to excitedly shove this book in your friend’s face with little decorum as you shout, “THIS IS SO US!”
I Was Their American Dream: A Graphic Memoir by Malaka Gharib. A triumphant tale of self-discovery, a celebration of a family’s rich heritage, and a love letter to American immigrant freedom. Malaka Gharib’s illustrations come alive with teenage antics and earnest questions about identity and culture, while providing thoughtful insight into the lives of modern immigrants and the generation of millennial children they raised.
Feelings: A Story in Seasons by Manjit Thapp. Enter Manjit Thapp’s world, where you’ll find moods that change as quickly as the weather; the different shades of anxiety and hope that each new season brings; and the stages of joy and pain that fuel our growth. From the spark of possibility and jolt of creativity in High Summer, to the need for release from anxiety and pressure during Monsoon, to the desolation and numbness of Winter, Thapp implores us to consider the seasons of our own emotional journeys.
Kusama: The Graphic Novel by Elisa Macellari. From rural Japan to international icon – Yayoi Kusama has spent her remarkable life immersed in her art. Follow her incredible journey in this vivid graphic biography which details her bold departure from Japan as a young artist, her embrace of the buzzing New York art scene in the 1960s, and her eventual return home and rise to twenty-first century super-fame.

Come and learn more about the history of the process, changes in the requirements and where to find copies of these documents. In 1906, the U.S. Congress changed the immigration law and required specific additional information in the naturalization petitions. The petition then included when and where the immigrant arrived. It also listed when and where they were born. The naturalization of our ancestors establishes our family roots in America. They were part of the wave of emigration that left their homeland with the hope of finding work and a better life. They saw immigration to America as their last chance. Learn more about how to research and record the details of their journey to arrival and naturalization. Registration encouraged and starts June 14. •

Summer 2022 New Lenox Library Guide Life in a Japanese American Internment Camp Adults Tuesday, August 2, 7–8 pm Zoom
In 1942, following Pearl Harbor, members of Sarah Okner’s family along with more than 120,000 other people of Japanese heritage living on the west coast were forcibly removed from their homes and relocated to remote camps where they would spend the rest of the war. Roughly two-thirds of those incarcerated were second- or thirdgeneration Japanese American citizens, born in the U.S., many of them children. Okner’s multimedia lecture “Life in a Japanese American Internment Camp” brings together first-hand accounts from her grandparents with 15 years of research to illustrate the details of daily life in these camps, explore the political climate that led to the executive order that incarcerated thousands of innocent American citizens, and demonstrate the profound effects it had on those living there.
