NATURAL DENTISTRY: A Holistic Approach The further we displace ourselves form our natural way of being, the worse it is for our body and health. This is an undeniable and profound truth. Dr. Shvartsman and Dr. Golan take a holistic approach to dental health care. Over 100 years ago, Dr. Weston Price observed traditional people around the world. Those that were more westernized had more mouth and health problems, while those following a more traditional life and diet were remarkably healthier. This article will focus on the nature/dentistry connection. The importance of respecting nature has recently been exemplified in studies of human jaw development. One study has found that children who are breast-fed develop properly shaped upper jaws as opposed to those who are artificially fed with a bottle. Another important point when it comes to breast-feeding is that what nature has designed for babies to eat will always be far superior to any man-made formula. Another study found that children in hunter-gatherer societies eating unprocessed food develop normal lower jaws as opposed to children eating a westernized processed food diet. So eating natural food that is our birth-right not only is good for our health it is critical for our jaw development. It is no wonder that most children in the US need braces because their jaws are too small to accommodate their teeth. Our hunter-gatherer ancestors had straight teeth and an absence of tooth decay and gum disease. For hundreds of thousands of years before agriculture, which is only 10,000 years old, human beings lived as one with nature. Our ancestors lived as hunter-gatherers eating a diet of animals, vegetables and fruit. Grains, legumes and dairy were not part of their natural diet, no matter which environment they lived in. It is only with the advent of grain, legume and dairy consumption do we find tooth decay, improper jaw development and gum disease. This is something to consider if you want to avoid these common diseases of the mouth in our westernized society. When it comes to restoring teeth, Dr. Shvartsman and Dr. Golan look to nature as the guide. This is why they follow the Biomimetic Dentistry approach to restoring decayed, weakened and broken teeth. Biomimetic dentistry focuses on restoring teeth with materials that closely emulate the different parts of the tooth in both physical structure, esthetic form and color. Dentin and enamel are restored with Bisphenol-A free composite resins that have similar properties to each respective layer of the tooth. This way, the restorative tooth replacement functions with the tooth in harmony and not against it. Rigid materials, like metal amalgam, act like wedges inside the tooth and too often cause fractures and cracking of the natural tooth

structure. Some dentists think that amalgam filings "last longer" because metal is stronger than resin. The more important question is: "at what consequence?" If the tooth breaks or develops cracks, is that really desirable??? By respecting what is natural, Dr. Shvartsman and Dr. Golan always take great care to preserve as much of your natural tooth as possible. There is nothing better than the natural tooth. This is why they follow a tooth conserving, biomimetic and holistic approach. Great care is taken to avoid toxic and harmful materials such as mercury or Bisphenol A-containing fillings. Both doctors also use metal free ceramic restorations for crowns and onlays. Tooth decay is removed careful using Laser assisted diagnosis, Laser decay removal and/or dentin sparing drills. Decay identifying dye is used to identify bacteria infected dentin so that only the diseased part of the tooth is removed and the healthy part preserved. Severely weakened teeth are reinforced with a woven fiberglass mesh to regain strength and support for weak cusps. Gum disease is treated in a minimally invasive manner as well. Early stage gum disease is treated in a non-surgical approach while more advanced stages are treated in a minimally invasive manner using Laser micro-surgery. Instead of cutting away gum and bone around teeth, the Laser approach addresses the cause of disease: bacteria and inflammation. In addition, Laser energy stimulates the body’s natural healing response. Mouth ulcers such as cold sores, canker sores and apthous ulcers are also treated with laser energy and not drugs, as is the common approach. By setting a new paradigm of respecting and emulating nature, we can embark on a new, better health care approach. Patients need to become their own health care advocates by choosing doctors who provide them with the health care that they want to receive. Take conDr. Golan Dr. Shvartsman trol of your health!

Intravenous Ozone Therapy (DIV) The Safe & Painless Answer for HPV by Dr. Howard Robins What is genital HPV infection? According the U. S. Center for Disease Control, genital human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection. There are 40 or more types of HPV that can infect the genital areas of men and women as well as the throat and mouth! HPV may cause serious health problems, including genital warts and certain cancers. While there is no certain way to tell who will develop health problems from HPV and who will not, most cases of HPV will be eliminated by our immune system before it causes any health problem. Most people who become infected with HPV don’t even know they have it. So how do you get HPV? Anyone who is having or has ever had sex can get HPV. This is true even for people who only have sex with one person in their lifetime! HPV is passed on through genital contact, usually during vaginal and anal sex. What most people don’t know is that HPV may also be passed on during oral sex and simply from genital contact. HPV can be passed on even when the infected person has no signs or symptoms. Most people don’t realize they are infected, or that they are passing HPV on to their partner. A person can still have HPV, even if years have passed since they have had sexual contact with an infected person. It is also possible to get more than one type of HPV. Most important to note is that a pregnant woman with genital HPV can pass the HPV on to her baby during delivery. What are the risks from HPV? Fortunately, most people with HPV never develop symptoms or health problems. Most HPV infections (90%) go away by themselves within two years. Unfortunately, sometimes, HPV infections can and will persist and may cause a variety of very significant and serious health problems. Health problems that can be caused by HPV include: • Genital warts which can be painful. • Recurrent respiratory papillomatosis (RRP), fortunately a rare condition in which the warts grow in the throat. • Cervical cancer. • Other rare but serious cancers, including genital cancers, and a type of head and neck cancer called oropharyngeal cancer which is in the back of throat, and may extend to the base of the tongue and tonsils. Is there a test for HPV? HPV tests are available to help screen women aged 30 years and older for cervical cancer. These HPV tests are not used to screen men, children, or
women under the age of 30 years. There is no approved HPV test to detect HPV in the mouth or throat. How is HPV normally treated? What is the success? According to the government, there is no treatment for the virus itself, but only for the health problems that HPV can cause. This is not true. The standard treatments below unfortunately often fail and a recurrence of the problem happens sometimes a year or more later. • Genital warts can be removed with treatments applied by doctors using acid or liquid nitrogen. • Cervical cancer is most treatable when it is diagnosed and treated early. Women who get routine Pap tests and follow up as needed can identify problems before cancer develops. Here surgical scraping or cryosurgery (freezing) is typically used also, unfortunately far to often with re-occurrence. • Recurrent respiratory papillomatosis (RRP) can be treated with surgery or medicines. Curing RRP often requires many treatments or surgeries over a period of years. Is there another choice and if the normal treatment fails can it still be used? Yes! There is a safe and proven effective treatment that has been used in Europe for many years and now available here, called Direct Intravenous Ozone Therapy (DIV). This treatment destroys the virus wherever it is living, genitally and orally outside or inside the body. Simply, it is the only treatment that does this and with no pain at all! What happens is, medical grade oxygen and ozone gas is safely and painlessly injected by trained professionals into a vein (you can’t get an embolus from oxygen, only from nitrogen gas), the extra ”O” in the ozone molecule acts like a glue stealing an electron from anything in our body that it can latch onto. Healthy cells in our body contain natural anti-oxidants that protect them against damage or destruction. Only pathogens like HPV are destroyed anywhere they are living. In addition organic ozonated oils can be used either externally and/or internally to safely and painlessly assist and speed up the eradication of this horrible infection. So please don’t wait! It’s absolutely possible to completely eliminate HPV from your body. THE OTHER LAB TESTING Much of what we consider lab testing is dedicated to finding pathology in our body. It is really focused on finding very big imbalances in our system that may indicate that we have one or another disease. There is nothing wrong with having this kind of lab testing available, it is great to have this kind of testing available. However, most people don’t feel at their best and yet there is nothing to indicate the reason why in the lab testing they undergo. Imbalances generally need to be pretty high to show up in lab work. In other words, there is usually an active disease process, the same process that may have been going on for years when the blood work was coming back normal. Many companies have for years working hard on laboratory testing that we would refer to as functional lab testing. This is testing that looks for imbalances that are not diseases yet, but show that there are changes that could be made to prevent future disease. Because the results that come back from this testing are less extreme than the testing that shows an actually disease, the results can be more vague and more open to interpretation or misinterpretation. However, on the positive side, functional lab testing can also take us from a state of just surviving and getting through the day to a state of real well-being. I know this because I have experienced this myself. Even though I was years into practice as a naturopathic doctor, I still did not feel really well. Of course, I didn’t really know this myself. Because I was not as bad as I had been in the past with ulcerative colitis symptoms, I thought I was ok. I didn’t realize that I was just functional and not really at the optimal level of function. There are a few tests that really helped me get to a state where I was not just making it through my days but actually feeling really well. Now of course, I had done all of the normal lab testing on myself and never found much very interesting, but I was not feeling well. I wasn’t sleeping because I really couldn’t get to sleep until after midnight; if I were to try, I would just lay in bed tossing and turning. And then, the mornings were just torture because even if I seemed to sleep enough time, I never woke with the feeling of being really rested. I had actually forgotten what that even felt like. I can’t say that I ever felt really happy. Even when things were pretty good with life, I found things to worry about. In fact, feeling good never real-

ly even ended up feeling that good, because I knew it was just a brief break from not feeling well and that a state of anxiety or fatigue or both would soon return. For me, this began to change when I started learning about the functional lab testing that could give me insights into what was out of balance in my system. The first testing that I did for the testing for hidden food allergens. That showed me that even though I was eating a diet that I thought was healthy it was not healthy for me. I was having an allergic reaction to eggs that I didn’t even know about. I thought that eggs were healthy, but my body was fighting them like they were a bacterial or a virus. Every time I was eating that food, my body was acting as if I had a flu or a cold. You know how hard it is too sleep if you are not feeling well. The flu would be a lot better if you could just sleep through it, but all of that inflammation keeps your system worked up and fighting against you. The signals that the body uses to trigger all of this discomfort are called cytokines. The signals that the body sends when you have a food allergen that you don’t know about are exactly the same ones that your body releases when you are sick. We call these food allergens hidden food allergens because they can take up to a month to show up after you eat the food and by that point there is little connection or association to the food that caused it, making it very hard to figure out that a food was even starting the process in the first place. The next big improvement came for me when I did brain chemistry testing. This testing shows you have the gas pedals and brake pedals of your brain are working. For me, the testing showed that I was all gas pedal and no brake pedal. So this showed up in chronic inflammation that never wanted to turn off and a brain that never wanted to turn off. It may seem good to have an active brain, but a hyperactive brain does not think as well as a calm brain. It thinks a lot but not as well. Functional testing is amazing.

WHAT FUELS YOUR HEALTH GOALS? As humans, many of us are always trying to better ourselves and our health. Hippocrates once said that you are either building health or losing health every day. Whether you are regaining your health back, battling to reverse a disease or trying to prevent disease from ever occurring, our health is always evolving. In order to achieve your dreams in health, you must remember what's fueling you. What is driving you forward? What is getting you out of bed on those days where you are losing motivation? There are five helpful steps to keep you on a healthy track to success. The first step is to reconnect to what fuels you. This is the most important step. If you constantly reconnect to the 'WHY' of what you are trying to accomplish, very rarely will not veer off the path you are taking. The bigger the reason behind the why, the better chance you have of staying on track. If you are trying to lose weight for example, you may be trying to lose weight to look skinnier. But a bigger reason could be is that you want to lose weight for your kids so that you are able to take care of them the way you want to and looking skinnier just happens to be a great bonus. Write down your reason why you want to achieve your goals and write them everywhere! Write it on your bathroom mirror, calendar, computer, refrigerator, etc! The second step is to create a vision board. Create a board of your short term and long term health goals. This will show you the 'big picture.' They say the only way to eat an elephant is by taking one bite at a time. So know the small steps you are taking today and a year from now. You may find over time that your vision board may change as your goals change and that's ok! The third step to your success is to find a mentor. Find someone that's doing what you want already. These are the individuals that you want to get advice from. Not everyone is going in the same direction with their health that you are so you want to be conscious of who you sur-
by Dr. Ray Omid, DC
round yourself with. There are certain people that can interfere with your goals as well. Love them anyway but be aware of who they are and how they can influence you. Tricia Cunningham once said "The individual who says it is not possible should move out of the way of those doing it." The fourth step to achieving your health goals is to write down your accomplishments. Write down everything that's going right and all the blessings that are occurring. Do this on a daily basis. When you start acknowledging all the things that are going right, you will begin to see more things going right. If you concentrate on the things that go wrong, more things will go wrong. Sometimes, we forget the small accomplishments we make and forget where we started. The last step is to take a moment to recharge. Everyone needs a break. If you don't take a break, it can get in the way of where you are going. You will even notice that a small break will re-fuel you and you'll be more driven then ever! You have control over the future of your health. Stick to what is fueling you and keep at it. With perseverance and non-stop determination, any health goal is within your reach! t’s no secret that battling cancer takes a toll on the body, but often times the emotional price tag can be even greater than the physical one. Research-Based Exercise Prescription: High Intensity Interval Training Part 8 In previous installments, I wrote about the growing body of research which confirms that high-intensity interval training (HIIT) is a time-efficient way to achieve the health benefits associated with traditional moderate-intensity continuous endurance training. With HIIT, typical aerobic exercises like walking/running and cycling are performed in an atypical manner with highintensity “work” intervals interspersed with periods of recovery involving low-intensity exercise or rest. The advantage is that work rates that exceed the highest sustainable pace can be encountered and exercising at such high levels of exertion creates a strong stimulus for positive adaptations. For example, much like conventional endurance training, HIIT increases the maximal rate of oxygen consumption (VO2max; a measure of cardiorespiratory fitness), but it does so without requiring the same time commitment. What is more, some studies show that the benefits induced by HIIT are actually greater compared to those attainable with conventional endurance training and gains are often achieved in a shorter period of time. While HIIT has been used by athletes for years, recent research suggests that it is both safe and effective for non-athletes and even some clinical populations. For example, I have previously summarized a review article by Weston et al. which included studies where HIIT was compared to moderate-intensity continuous training for individuals with coronary artery disease, heart failure, hypertension, obesity and metabolic syndrome. Results showed that HIIT, which was equally as safe, was more effective for improving important determinants of cardiorespiratory health in these individuals. However, one area where HIIT was not superior was its ability to favorably alter body composition. For example, Schjerve et al. had obese subjects perform either HIIT walking/running, moderate-intensity continuous walking/running or strength training and found that despite greater increases in VO2max and flow-mediated dilation (a marker used to assess endothelial function and the presence of vascular disease) in the HIIT group, the two forms of endurance training decreased body weight and body fat percentage to the same extent. While the findings by Schjerve et al. might appear counterintuitive, when you consider how their study was designed, it is easy to understand why HIIT’s superiority did not extend to greater body fat reduction. Importantly, subjects in the two endurance training groups were matched with respect to the amount of energy they expended during each session. Specifically, the moderate-intensity subjects exercised for 47 minutes so that they expended the same amount as HIIT subjects, who performed four four-minute work intervals separated by three minutes at a moderate intensity for recovery. Consequently, HIIT created a greater stimulus for positive adaptations with reduced duration (25 minutes per session vs. 47), but that reduction offset the higher energy use during work intervals such that overall energy balance, which is the ultimate determinant of fat gain/loss, was altered in a
by Dr. Fred DiMenna, Ph.D., C.S.C.S. similar manner by both forms of training. Greater cardiorespiratory benefit and the same body fat loss might not seem problematic, but it is important to recognize that a similar response with respect to body composition might not be present in “the field” where energy expenditure might not be matched. For example, recent research by Hazell et al. suggests that reducing the duration of work intervals from 30 to 10 seconds during sprint-interval training (HIIT where work intervals are performed with all-out effort) does not decrease the aerobic training effect. This suggests that the potent HIIT stimulus can provide benefit at even lower doses than originally thought. Consequently, much like a drug, future research will, no doubt, be focused on determining the dose-response relationship for the benefits derived from HIIT and, specifically, the minimum dose required to elicit an effect. This is important because longterm adherence to an exercise program is likely greater if less of a time commitment is required. However, it’s important to note that energy expenditure is a function of both work rate and time; hence, while extremely brief HIIT sessions might be shown to bring the same or even greater physiological adaptations compared to conventional endurance training in a fraction of the time, overall energy expenditure during HIIT might not measure up if fat loss is required. To put this into perspective, consider an exerciser who performs moderate-intensity continuous training four times per week for 60 minutes per session. For an average person, this might involve walking three miles, which would result in 283 kilocalories of energy expended for a 180-pound individual. Now, consider what would happen if this person replaced this traditional training with four HIIT sessions comprising ten 30-second work intervals of running at eight miles-per-hour separated by 150-second recovery intervals that involve walking at the aforementioned moderate pace. The person would wind up reducing their exercise time by 50% and, based on what has been shown, the high-intensity nature of the training would likely bring more dramatic improvements in VO2max, insulin sensitivity, endothelial function and overall cardiometabolic disease risk. However, the time efficient nature of HIIT would result in decreased overall energy expenditure as the energy required for the high-intensity intervals would be less than the amount needed to perform the moderate work that was removed. For example, in this case, the 35 minutes of moderate-intensity walking that was replaced requires 165 kilocalories whereas the five minutes of high-intensity effort that was added costs only 95. Consequently, the exerciser will be expending 280 less kilocalories per week by switching to the more effective/efficient form of training.

IN SEARCH OF FATHERHOOD: How Men Can be Better Fathers to Their Daughters In the few minutes you'll spend reading this article, 700 daughters will be born around the world. By this time tomorrow another 200,000 will have come to life. One will become president-of a company, a non-profit, or a country. Another may win the Nobel Prize. Another will work as a stripper. One will end up in prison. Whatever her path in life, a woman starts out as a daughter. And the person who most shapes her life is arguably you, her father. Through your presence or absence, you mold how she lives, leads, and loves-or doesn't. I learned this first-hand. As a father raising two girls, I felt called to better understand the extraordinary impact that we have on our daughters. So I spent a year with 50 women from around the world, 29 to 92; famous and anonymous; rich and poor; young and old; straight, lesbian and transgender. Over hours and sometimes days together, we explored the intimate details of their life stories and how they were shaped by their fathers-from heroic to horrific. These women included a state Supreme Court justice, a doctor, a psychotherapist, world-class athletes, executives, drug addicts, sex workers and homeless women. They came from Iran, Liberia, China, the U.S., Mexico, Germany, Holland, Korea, Saudi Arabia, India, and places in between. Women who drew the "long straw" in the fathers life dealt them were consistently more successful, happier, better grounded emotionally, and had more enduring intimate relationships. The women who drew the "short straw"--whose fathers were ambivalent, abusive, or who had abandoned their daughters--were not as lucky. So what makes for a "long straw" father? The most important lesson from these women and from the fathers, daughters, and mental health professionals with whom I've worked over the years is this: More is caught than taught. That is, you are the mirror in which your daughter sees herself. What your daughter absorbs from your presence or absence, and how you live, will run deeper than the lessons you consciously try to teach her. In essence, if you're a father, you're a software programmer-and the software you're coding is your daughter's belief system. By showing up as a father, or not, by loving or abusing, you are laying down the beliefs that form your daughter's identity. In the early years of her life, the deepest core beliefs are programmed, and they are excruciatingly difficult to rewrite later in life. "I am attractive. I am interesting. I am worthy. Men are my equal. Men are frightening. My world is unsafe..." Programming the software of a daughter's mind takes place in the nooks and cran-

nies of your everyday experience with her. Lucille, a spirited woman in her eighties, told me childhood stories of her father taking her into his woodshop at night so they could hang out while he worked. It was during the Great Depression and her family had lost most of what they had, but she grew up emotionally rich. Her dad told her stories, showed her how to use tools, and just listened to what she had to say. The real dialogue wasn't about wood working; it was the subtext she internalized from her father's interest. She grew up with the message that she was interesting and that she mattered. Blanca, an honorary U.S. Consul to Mexico, was raised by a father of simple means and remarkable moral depth. A guest agricultural worker in the Salinas Valley, he devoted his life to giving his daughters the opportunity for an education. Blanca now holds a law degree from Santa Clara University, and an MBA from Berkeley. More is caught than taught. If you're raising a daughter, it's the most important lesson I can share. Your awareness of that can change the woman she becomes. If you belittle your daughter, she grows up knowing herself as small. If you tune her out, she comes to see herself as unimportant. If you don't care about her, she'll pursue that attention from other men, tying a knot between her emotional emptiness and their sexual hunger. If you degrade her mother, you taint her image of both husbands and wives. That list goes on and on. So does this one: If you listen to her intently, she sees herself as someone who matters. If you take a genuine interest in her, and do things as simple as play catch or go to the movies together, she sees herself as interesting and desirable. If you hold her accountable, she learns responsibility. If you play with her, she becomes more playful. If you live with dignity, she will carry herself with grace. Every day as a father, you're laying on another layer of paint on her canvas. By the time she enters adulthood, she's either carrying the black and blue of your dark side, or she's created herself as the work of art she was born to be. You Dad, every 200,000 of you today, are the mirror in which your daughter will come to see herself. Yes, Salt Water Pools Have as Much Chlorine in them as Regular Chlorinated Pools!!! There is a common misconception that salt water or saline pools eliminate chlorine. Unfortunately, this cannot be farther from the truth! Salt water pools generate chlorine (vs manually adding it) via a process known as electrolysis within the chlorine generator that is required with a salt water pool system. Sorry to burst your bubble! Due to the lower acidity levels in salt water pools, common ailments like red or irritated eyes are lessened, however, you and your children are still swimming in, absorbing, and inhaling thousands of toxic chemicals and by-products that are literally poisoning you. Credible studies indicate that some pool chemicals are more toxic than we ever imagined. During typical chemical disinfection, chlorine and other chemicals react with organic matter to form hundreds of disinfection by-products that have been linked to asthma, allergies, and even cancer. A study was published in the American Journal of Epidemiology, a medical Journal published on behalf of the John Hopkins School of Public Health. The findings were that swimming pool chemicals can be harmful when they are inhaled, ingested or absorbed through the skin while swimming. Researchers found that disinfection by-products are linked to an increased risk of cancer. They name trihalomethane (THM) as the most prevalent chlorination by-product and investigate long-term exposure and bladder cancer risk. The conclusion was that swimming in chlorinated pools boosted bladder cancer risk by an alarming 57%. Researchers also noted that when chemicals, such as THM, are absorbed through the skin or lungs, they may have a more powerful carcinogenic effect because they don’t undergo detoxification by the liver. In a study that appeared in the medical journal Pediatrics, supported by the National Fund for Scientific Research, researchers wanted to fully evaluate the connection between chlorinated swimming pools and allergic diseases. The researchers concluded that the chlorine used in pools can boost a child's risk of asthma up to six-fold.
How Can We Minimize the Risks of Pool Chemicals? The risks associated with swimming pool chemicals and their by-products (some chemicals combine to form new chemicals) must be minimized. In the last few years, we've learned how to safely eliminate most of the chemicals in swimming pools and how to eliminate by-products. Ultraviolet (UV) disinfection eliminates up to 90% of chlorine and nearly 100% of chlorine side-effects. Ultraviolet systems from healthEhabitatsTM reduce harsh chemicals to safe levels commonly found in drinking water. This extremely affordable and costsaving technology frees swimmers from burning eyes, skin irritations, foul chemical odors, bleached hair, and chlorine allergies. Ultraviolet makes any pool safe again, and helps you to protect what's important.
In addition, the World Health Organization has publicly stated that "Lower free chorine concentrations may be health protective when UV is used." This is fully supported by studies that found no adverse effects of chlorine at a low concentration of 0.5 ppm The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recognizes UV as a proven technology: "Ultraviolet (UV) radiation has been found to be an effective disinfectant... Simplicity of installation, ease of operation and maintenance, and low costs relative to chemical disinfection, make UV a useful small systems disinfection technology option." The State of New York requires UV sterilizers on all water parks. The Olympic Games in Athens, Sydney, and Beijing utilized UV lights for their swimming pools. Texas A&M University, University of Texas and Yale University use UV to purify their swimming pools. The World Health Organization has stated 15 Risks from Exposure to that 0.5 ppm free chlorine is effective Chlorine & Disinfection when UV is used. Top Ten Detox Tips from ‘Toxin Toxout’ In "Toxin Toxout," (May 2014; St Martin's Press; authors Bruce Lourie and Rick Smith (authors of a pervious expose on toxins in Death by Rubber Duck) use themselves as guinea pigs to test the chemicals we inhale, eat, drink and absorb through our skin on a daily basis. The book is part memoir/part expose of the hundreds of thousands of chemicals that are slowly killing us everyday. The good news is, once you are aware of where these toxins are lurking, you can avoid them and use proven detoxification methods to eliminate the load on your body. Here are the Top Ten Detox Tips from their book: 1. Lose the toxic lipstick: Use green personalcare products that don't contain chemicals like
phthalates or parabens. In the Toxin Toxout experiments, levels of some phthalates were reduced by ten times, and levels of parabens by as much as seventy-seven times by using readily available, and more natural, cosmetics and other beauty products.
The average American spends over ninety-percent of their lives indoors. So paying attention to improving indoor air quality is critically important to your health. Avoiding toxic odors like the "new car smell" can dramatically reduce levels of serious toxins like benzene and toluene in your body.
2. Eat organic apples, broccoli, and lettuce (and other organic fruits and veggies). This will, on average, cut your body's levels of some toxic pesticides by a factor of three. It will also bring your levels of some nasty chemicals in food packaging - like BPA in canned goods - down by as much as eighty-eight times.
5. Cut the cow, crunch a carrot. Recent studies have found that changing to a vegetarian diet reduces levels of toxins like phthalates and antibiotics in the body in as little as five days. But you don't have to go all-out, all veg, all the time, to get an effect. Every little bit of greenery helps!
3. Drink water. And lots of it! On average, we are made up of two-thirds water by weight. Making sure you're well hydrated helps flush toxins from your body. 4. Wear organic cotton. Use natural fibers and green products like low-VOC paints in your home and avoid products that might off-gas.
6. Hit the gym and the sauna. When you exercise or take saunas, toxic chemicals like BPA and phthalates leave your body through your sweat. Make sure you drink plenty of purified water. (Never drink straight tapwater which contains chlorine!) 7. Run, bike, swim, dance! Because a lot of toxins are deposited in fat, recent research has shown that exercising and losing weight can speed up the rate at which you excrete pollutants from your body. 8. Skip expensive cleanse diets. There is any number of snake-oil salesmen out there waiting to sell you the latest detox fad. Don't buy it. Avoiding further exposure to toxins when possible, and giving your body what it needs to get rid of the toxins already in you, is the basis of an effective detox lifestyle. Guaranteed. 9. Think twice about hand sanitizers (wipes and gels). Some of the most serious increases in pollutants in the environment like triclosan, common in many antibacterial products - are now leaching from the garbage that we throw away, or the stuff we flush down the drain. These chemicals then wind up in groundwater or lakes and rivers and come back at us when we drink tapwater. Avoiding products with triclosan, for instance, can lower levels of this pollutant by almost one hundred times in your own body and also ensure it's not flushed down the drain on a daily basis. 10. Support politicians who believe in a greener economy. Good governments pass laws to reduce pollution, resulting in fewer pollutants in your body. It's as simple as that. So get involved with organizations advocating for a healthy, non-toxic future. EDITOR’S NOTE: OTHER GOOD DETOX STRATEGIES CHELATION: IV drips containing chelating agents bind to heavy metal toxins circulating in the blood and help release them out of the body. PRE AND PROBIOTICS: Healthy bacteria replace pathogenic bacteria in order to eliminate toxins from intestinal tract.

AVOID ROUND-UP and OTHER PESTICIDES in your garden and home. Monsanto’s Round-up is one of the most dangerous chemicals on earth. One of Round-up’s inert ingredient, polyethoxylated tallowamine, or POEA, was more deadly to human embryonic, placental and umbilical cord cells than the main ingredient, glyphosate - a finding researchers call “astonishing.” GARLIC is rich in sulfur and selenium compounds that are essential in helping to eliminate toxins and pathogens from the body. CILANTRO is an amazing herb! Scientfic studies have proven that this herb helps to protect against lead and mercury induced oxidative stress. The humble herb also seems to protect against Chlamydia trachomatis and Herpes.

Of course, I have days where I would love to eat a cookie or pasta. Everything is ok in moderation. I avoid sugar in general, and what I call unnecessary carbs like bread or pasta. The first humans didn’t eat these foods. I don't think they need to be a part of one’s diet in general. Eating this way improves my skin, mental health, and self-confidence. I also take fish oil and multi-vitamins.
Words of advice for our readers: Stay positive and goal driven. Believe you can achieve anything you put your mind to. Live a healthy lifestyle including exercise and healthy foods. You will notice a huge difference in your overall wellbeing. Be active every day. Its as simple as throwing on some tunes for a good 30-minute dance session in your living room.
Tell us little about yourself...where you were born and raised, were you into fitness as a child? I was born and raised in Upstate NY. I was an active child. I played softball, tennis etc. I loved swimming and taking walks in the woods. When I graduated high school, I began taking fitness more seriously and took advantage of the gym at my college and loved hiking in the Adirondacks. How did you get into fitness & modeling? Fitness was always part of my life. My mom is a certified Pilates Instructor. My brother and father always lead active lifestyles. I got into modeling by auditioning for the show America's Next Top Model just before I graduated college. I won the show and moved to Los Angles, CA shortly after the show finished. What is your style of fitness, what is your favorite activity? I get bored very fast with certain workout routines. I constantly change it up. One day its an effective HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training), then I’ll do spin classes, yoga, kick boxing or running outside. Describe your relationship with with Sonja-Sophie Loeffler, your personal health coach, why is finding a good health coach important? I have a great relationship with Sonja. It’s important to have a health coach because your body always changes. Sonja is a Personal Trainer, Health and Lifestyle Coach. We work on three areas: mindset, nutrition and exercise. It's nice to get different variations of workout routines, specially targeted for my body, goals and schedule. The personalized nutrition is great and checking in on my mindset reduced my sugar cravings. This all is important so I can reach all my health and fitness goals. Describe a typical workout from start to finish that you do… My “routine” is switching it up! The HIIT workout is 15 minutes short, sprinting and walking in different intervals to get a sweat going fast. Sonja taught me how to adjust it to keep it challenging as I get stronger. On a busy day, I do this workout in 15 minutes and check it off my list. The next day I may do spinning or yoga. Fitness is not about being rigid, it’s about making it work for you. How many times a week/how often/what other fitness related activities do you do... I try to exercise at least five days a week. I regularly do HIIT and weights. When I have more time, I take a spinning, kick boxing or yoga class. I love being outdoors kayaking or hiking. I am a big fan of Pilates. It is great for toning and strengthening your core and lengthening your spine.
Are you working on any special projects? I am collaborating with a children's hospital in Los Angeles specialized in children battling cancer. It's a cause I hold dear to my heart. These children are going through such a trauma in their young lives, I like to bring them joy by spending time with them. I love animals and have worked with the SPCA of Queensbury, a great animal rescue in Upstate NY. I raised almost $1,000 a few months ago. My mom (Denise James) works with that rescue often and promotes animal rescue and properly caring for your animals in her own radio show, “Let’s Talk Animals.” Describe your bootcamps, the next schedule and what women/men learn in them…Being tired of all the fad diets and magic pills out there, Sonja and I put together a virtual “Camp”. We share hands-on tools on figuring out what your best way to eat and exercise is. Incorporating lessons on mindset, nutrition and exercise we provide a positive, supportive environment as you implement new, powerful health habits over a 90-day period. Your mind will become your best ally. Imagine craving only healthy food! Willpower is not required, just a willingness to change. We like to say: “If it doesn’t make us happy, we’re not doing it!” Sonja’s holistic approach works for me, it can work for you too! The next program starts on June 30th, come join us! What was it like competing on the reality TV show, America’s Next Top Model? Do you feel reality TV shows are programming people to behave poorly towards one another and be competitive? I can't speak on behalf of reality TV shows in general. As for ANTM, I don't believe the show is programming people to behave poorly towards one another. There is nothing wrong with competition, especially when you compete for something that influences your career this much. I think people should not take what people do or say on reality shows too seriously. Being in such a highly stressful environment for weeks can cause people to act in ways they would never behave in the "real world." I always keep an open mind and try not to judge people whose shoes I am not in. I am grateful for being on the show where I met some pretty amazing people, along with making great memories. What do you do mentally, spiritually and emotionally to stay in shape.. Mentally I work on staying positive. I like meditation, though I’m not doing it often enough. I believe everything in life happens for a reason. I believe in myself and stay goal oriented and motivated. A coach can help with that. Having a healthy lifestyle with both your diet and exercise helps your mind stay clear and positive.

A LESSON IN COMPASSION COURTESY OF THE TEACHER’S PET Learn how an innovative program called the Mutt-i-grees® Curriculum is helping the next generation become more humane to each other and to animals in need When parents say good-bye to the school bus each morning, they hope that their kids are learning the important academic skills that will enable them to succeed as they grow into adulthood and prepare for their future careers. But parents also know that there’s far more to a true education than learning math, reading or other core subjects. A critical part of becoming a well-rounded, successful person who makes the world a more humane place involves an area that’s known in academic circles as Social and Emotional Learning—the process of acquiring essential life skills that enable children to grow up to be calm, confident and caring. In today’s climate, when bullying, depression and suicide are considered epidemics and barely a week goes by without another tragic act of school violence, it’s more important than ever for schools and other organizations to help our kids cultivate the characteristics that will make them more humane, compassionate individuals. But just how can you get across these concepts to kids so that they’re more than just empty words? There’s a perfect option out there, and it’s being used by thousands of schools and hundreds of libraries around the country: The Mutt-i-grees® Curriculum, an innovative Pre-K-Grade 12 program that builds on children’s affinity for animals and highlights the unique characteristics and desirability of Mutt-igrees: the dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens from shelters or rescue groups. Developed by North Shore Animal League America’s Pet Savers Foundation in collaboration with Yale University School of the 21st Century and funded by the Cesar Millan Foundation, the goal of the Mutt-i-grees Curriculum is to teach children skills to effectively communicate and manage emotions, as well as to foster empathy. “The Mutt-i-grees Curriculum leverages the natural bond children have with animals, which is why it is so engaging and effective,” says Dr. Matia FinnStevenson, the creator of the Curriculum. “It not only helps children develop self awareness and awareness of others, it also is turning them into the next generation of advocates for the adoption of homeless shelter pets.” Educators who have implemented the Curriculum tell powerful, touching stories about how the program has changed the culture of their schools; helped students of every level reach their full potential; and brought students, teachers and the
community together. Gloria Morgenstern, a parent-teacher coordinator at Ridgewood School in Queens, brought the Curriculum into her school as a component of the ESL program, using the Mutt-i-gree puppets and other fun “props” to impart lessons. One puppet only knew how to bark, she told the youngsters, while the other one could only howl. She asked them, how can they talk to each other and be friends? “The kids really got it,” she said. “They came up with great ideas, like they could give each other a cookie, or smile at each other.” Morgenstern uses the lessons to illustrate real-life solutions to situations that her students face. “We had a child come in from a foster home, and although we didn’t point that fact out, I did a lesson on foster dogs, telling the kids about how families take in these dogs in need of homes. Now, when they hear of a child who is in a foster family, they think it’s kind of cool.” Theresa Braun, a counselor at East Northport Middle School, says the Curriculum enabled her to implement the Dignity for All Students Act (DASA), a bullying prevention program that New York State mandated in 2010. And it was easy for her to convince her husband John Braun, a science teacher at East Northport, to incorporate dog-related lessons in his classroom. “I showed the students a picture of two dogs to illustrate the difference between observation and inference,” he explained. “Many of the kids jumped immediately to an inference that the dogs were fighting, while other kids had the opposite idea. It allowed me to explain what an observation is—such as, the dogs are outside and they are jumping—as opposed to an inference, such as they are happy or they’re fighting. It brought to life the idea of how people can perceive the same thing very differently.” The discussion also led to conversations about how people tend to judge each other based on outward appearances, like clothing or looks. “I was able to talk about the fact that we don’t really know about someone just from how they look,” he said. Students who never raised their hands were very engaged on the Mutt-igrees days, he added. “There was a noticeably higher level of engagement.” Originally focused only on canines, the Curriculum has added a new component for 2014, called Cats Are Mutt-i-grees 2. The addition of felines has been welcomed by educators who have piloted the new lessons and activities. As one elementary school teacher put it, “The details and facts about cats are interesting and exactly what’s needed to inform children and dispel myths. Have you ever had an injury and your dog or cat came to lie next to you or on the injured area? An animal will often lie directly on our body part that is injured. They know exactly where we need the healing. And you’ll probably agree it makes you feel much better. Just stroking and loving our pet is calming and reduces stress. In fact, therapy animals are commonly used to help those who are ill, elderly, developmentally disabled, or dealing with other serious issues. It is medically proven that stroking our pets actually reduces our heart rate and calms anxiety. But really, it’s much more than this. Animals can actually absorb negative energy from us and help us to dissipate it. They actually have the ability to heal us. In fact, some animals feel their specific purpose in life is to heal us. I had a client who came for a “reading” about his cat. It was a large, very old cat and the owner was concerned about his health. I felt that the overall issue had to do with the blood. I got the word “HIV.” This was strange, I thought, but the owner confirmed that cat did in fact have a similar disease carried in felines. I also felt a lot of troubled energy, almost like a “homeless, drugs, street mentality.” I asked what this man did for a living that could give his cat this energy. He explained that he worked as a therapist for homeless drug addicts, many with HIV. I explained to him that before he comes home from work, he should take a moment to shake off his worries so his cat won’t absorb it. “Oh no, it’s more than that!” he said. It turns out these people come to his home office and his cat sits under the table during the sessions! Imagine that as well as our physical bodies we have an invisible energy aura around us. It is here that we store difficult emotions, deep grudges, and memories that continue to haunt us. All our negative thoughts and experiences that we keep here affect our health, cause us stress and worry, and may eventually manifest into something physical in our body. Our animals can help to clear our auras, helping us to feel better and heal more easily. Because we become in tune with our pets and our energy is so closely intertwined with theirs, they can mimic our own health problems. They are

expressing the energy that we are exuding. For example, if a dog has a right back leg that hurts, I ask if the family member to whom the dog is closest has a right leg issue as well. More often than not, they do. A pain in the right leg can also be associated with not moving forward on an emotional issue. Often as soon as the person acknowledges what is going on and promises to address the health or emotional issue, the animal is instantly better. So, one of the first questions I ask when an animal has a health issue is what is going on health-wise with the owner or the person closest to this animal. Many times you’ll find that the person has an issue in their life as well My client Bunny came to me about her dog Sandy, who had an arthritic right hip. The dog wasn’t that old but would often run with a skip or a limp. Some days were worse than others. I asked Bunny if she had a bad hip. She didn’t but her husband Rick, who was closest to Sandy, had severe problems with his right hip. Over the years, he’d had many surgeries but was still in pain. Some days felt better than others. He had physical therapy exercises that he was supposed to do but often skipped them. I did a healing on Rick’s right hip and he miraculously stood up straight for the first time in years. Bunny called the next day to report that even more miraculously, Sandy whom I hadn’t even worked on, was healthy and acting her young self again as well. Sandy had been showing dad that he needed to pay attention to his hip. She wanted dad to do his exercises so he could get better. If you are feeling guilty about this, don’t be too hard on yourself. Your animal chose this purpose and wants this job in life. They love you and their role as a healer. Also, not every ailment they have is from you. Animals also bring their own illnesses and eventually their body may wear out as well. They get old just like us, so don’t forget, aging is natural. The point is just to pay attention to your health, your emotional energy, and do your part in keeping your animals healthy, too. British-born clairvoyant Gail Thackray was already a medium and healer, teaching Reiki and energy medicine, when she discovered her additional talent as an animal communicator. Gail uses both of these abilities to help people and their pets and has received hundreds of glowing testimonials from pet owners, resolving health for both their pets and themselves. HERBS FOR MENS HEALTH by David Bunting, Director of Herbal Affairs, Herb Pharm Two of the most predominant health issues facing men today involve the prostate and heart. Herbs can play a significant role in maintaining a healthy body, but only when combined with other elements of a healthy lifestyle. Some of the information included here is for reference purposes only and is not intended as self-treatment of any disease or as a substitute for adequate healthcare. Prostate issues are one of the most common conditions affecting men over 40, with estimates claiming that 50% of men aged 60 are affected. Prostate issues commonly manifest in an array of urinary symptoms related to constriction of the urethra by the prostate. These include slow, difficult or incomplete voiding and urine retention, post-urination dribbling and increased frequency of urination, especially at night. Due to its efficacy as a treatment for the prostate, saw palmetto has become nearly synonymous with men's health and is one of the top selling botanicals. Saw palmetto appears to decrease prostatic uptake of dihydrotestosterone, a potent androgen that causes irritation and swelling. Additionally, saw palmetto reduces associated inflammation. A preponderance of studies show that saw palmetto can positively affect urinary parameters, including increased urine flow and output, reduced urine retention and reduced frequency of urination. Saw palmetto (Serenoa repens) extract is made from the dried, ripe fruit of this southern coastal scrub palm, mostly wild-harvested in Florida. They yield high quantities of fatty acids mixed with flavonoids and a variety of phytosterols. The fruit was given official drug status in earlier revisions of the U.S. Pharmacopoeia (USP) and was recently returned to official status in the USP as a dietary supplement. The root of the common stinging nettle or nettle has been used traditionally in North America and Europe as a diuretic. German research showed that this effect was particularly profound in prostate treatment and it became a favored remedy in Europe. The root contains a variety of phytosterols in a complex mixture of other phytochemicals. While the mechanism remains unknown, nettle root appears to influence hormone conversions or hormone binding. Nettle root offers clinically demonstrated support for lower urinary tract issues such as nighttime urination, excessive urination and urine retention. In a 2007 study combining stinging nettle root with saw palmetto, urinary symptom scores were reduced by 53%. Stinging nettle (Urtica dioica) has become widespread throughout most of the U.S. Because the plant is armed with stinging hairs it is often considered to be a nuisance. However, the leaf, seed and root are all important allies in Western herbal medicine. Both nettle and saw palmetto carry the highest safety class rating awarded by the Botanical Safety Handbook and have no known interactions with drugs.
About 600,000 people die of heart disease in the United States every year, making heart disease the leading cause of death in the U.S. And while heart health is a concern for both men and women, men remain disproportionately affected. Diet, exercise and herbs can all have a meaningful effect on maintaining a healthy heart and vascular system. In the past 120 years, hawthorn has risen to become the most popular heart remedy in Western herbalism, and for good reason. Hawthorn is a superior tonic and restorative for both the heart and blood vessels. Hawthorn improves coronary artery blood flow and thus increased oxygenation of the heart muscle. Contractile power of the heart is enhanced, rhythm normalized and it increases cardiac tolerance to exercise. Hawthorn offers ideal support for general cardiac weakness and specifically aging heart. Additionally, hawthorn possesses a general calming effect on the nervous system with the capacity to dispel related gloom and anxiety. Several species of hawthorn (Crataegus spp.) are used in herbal medicine, By combining the flower, leaf and berry the flavonoid and procyanidin profiles are maximized. Hawthorn has been given the highest safety class rating and is not known to interact with drugs. Cactus grandiflorus, also referred to simply as cactus, is another cardiac herb that came to prominence around the turn of the 20th Century. Several medicinal species were described in the 1908 drug pamphlet, Cactus Grandiflorus. Physicians noted its positive effects and soon cactus was given official status in the National Formulary. The herb is considered a primary remedy in heart conditions characterized by quick movement and inadequate force. Cactus acts through the nervous system to help normalize heart function and is employed in cardiac conditions associated with fatigue, emotion, indigestion and trauma. Cactus extract is made from the fresh stem of sub-tropical and tropical Selenicereus species from the Caribbean. Cactus is considered safe when used as directed and while no case reports of drug interaction exist, the Botanical Safety Handbook cautions against using the herb with heart drugs based on early historical references. Always choose your herbal products from a company you trust. Combine herbal therapies with other elements of a healthy lifestyle including proper diet, exercise and adequate rest. Existing health conditions should be monitored by your healthcare provider and always discuss your supplements with them as part of your overall healthcare program. INTERESTING DOCUMENTARIES TO LIFT THE SOUL AND INSPIRE YOU The Power of Music to Heal: New Documentary a Sundance Audience Award. The film will be Sneak Previewed on July 25 at 7:30 pm Brings Dementia Patients Back to Life at Cinema Arts Center, Huntington, NY. $10 for members, $15 to non-members and a $2
According to IMDb.com, "As dementia continues to affect millions of elderly Americans, 'Alive Inside: A Story of Music & Memory' reveals a remarkable, musicbased breakthrough that has already transformed lives. Spearheaded by social worker Dan Cohen, and captured on camera over the course of three years by filmmaker Henry, one of the dementia patients helped by music in Alive Michael Rossato-Bennett, we learn that songs from a Inside, a new documentary patient's past can awaken memories and emotions that have been asleep for years, sometimes decades. Within a moment of hearing "I Get Around" by the Beach Boys, Alzheimer's patient Marylou jolts back to life, dancing around the living room and expressing a euphoria her husband hasn't witnessed since her illness took effect. Countless instances in Alive Inside provide proof that music stimulates activity in dementia-affected parts of the brain and transforms the quality of life of those often left to languish in silence. This groundbreaking documentary demonstrates how connecting the elderly to the music they love not only combats memory loss, but also supplements a broken health-care system often indifferent to interpersonal connections." Rossato-Bennett, the filmmaker says, "There are five million people in America with dementia. Ten million people spend a large part of their lives taking care of them. There are one million people in nursing homes, losing their connection to life...I mean isn't this desire, a desire to awaken a person to what they are, to what they could be, a deep part of being human? We all know music is magic, but with people with dementia, it is a back door to the mind." Dan Cohen, a Mineola-based social worker says, "How often does anyone have a chance to affect the lives of a million people? I'm hoping people are ready to come along on this journey." One of the most touching scenes in the film shows a catatonic dementia patient by the name of Henry, a nursing home patient of ten years, who couldn't remember his daughter, that once the music was turned on, sang every single lyric of his favorite Cab Calloway song from a half century ago, an astounding feat for even those not suffering from dementia. Researchers have discovered that the area in the brain involved with comprehending music is the last to be affected by dementia. One holistically minded psychiatrist interviewed in the film laments that it is nearly impossible to get $40 for an iPod and download of the patient's favorite music than it is to dispense $1,000 worth of Big Pharma antidepressant drugs. "We haven't done anything medically to touch the heart and soul of the patient," he says. This film provides a powerful testament to the fact that healing doesn't always come in the form of a pill. For more info, www.CinemaArtsCentre.org ABOUT BURT’S AND THE BEES The new documentary BURT'S BUZZ, a film by Jody Shapiro, takes an intimate look at the world of Burt Shavitz, a one-time native of Great Neck, NY and the face and co-founder of Burt's Bees, the all natural personal body care company featuring bee's honey and wax as its main ingredients. The film explores the fascinating twists and turns of Shavitz' unique life. Wise and wry, ornery and opinionated, the reclusive Shavitz is committed to living off the land and keeping true to his humble beginnings despite his celebrity status. The film chronicles Burt's life as a photographer, beekeeper, and brand spokesman, following his complicated relationship with the company, his fans, and the world around him. The film juxtaposes living simply against the corporate landscape of expanding into even more markets globally. Little does Burt know he has a huge following in Taiwan, nor does it phase him in the least. The co-producer is Long Island resident and animal activist Isabella Rossellini whose movie legend parents were actress Ingrid Bergman and director Roberto Rossellini. Isabella was commissioned by Burt's Bees in 2012 to make a series of short films on the lives of bees. Rossellini says, "As a person who wished to live off the grid and on his own terms, Burt must cope with the knowledge that millions around the world project their own thoughts, and perhaps even their own dreams, about who he must be. There are millions who believe that he is not a real person, instead a made up logo fronting a successful product." "He's like Colonel Sanders and he simply doesn't know it," says Trevor Folsom, Burt's caretaker. The fascinating part is Burt ended up creating a multi-million dollar empire from a free item in nature - one beehive he found on the side of the road the 1970's. "As long as I had one beehive, I could sell honey. Eventually, I had 26 hives of bees, it was a realization I never had to look for a job again as long as I led a low-key existence," says Burt. After he met Roxanne Quimby, who became his lover, she expanded the company and they stopped selling honey when she started making candles from Burt's leftover bee's wax. A varied personal care product line soon followed. But the stresses of running a small corporation disillusioned Burt and when he was accused of having an affair which a college girl, Roxanne sold the company out from under him and reportedly made millions. The new company, Clorox, (which was obviously trying to position itself as a environmentally friendly company with the purchase of Burt's Bees) later hired Burt back to be their official spokesperson. The trailer is available at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ffKjhyeyVW8. The film is available for download at iTunes now.

HEALTHY RECIPES: BRAZILIAN BBQ AND CAST IRON SKILLET COOKING Grilled Sea Bass In Banana Leaves Serves 4 4 small whole sea bass (about 1 pound 2 ounces each), scaled and cleaned 4 large banana leaves 4 limes, sliced 8 thick slices fresh ginger 2 garlic cloves, thinly sliced 2 red chiles (preferably malagueta chiles), thinly sliced large handful of mint leaves, roughly chopped For the marinade: 4 tablespoons olive oil, plus extra for brushing finely grated zest and juice of 1 lime 2 teaspoons soft brown sugar sea salt and freshly ground black pepper Light the barbecue, preferably one with a lid, and let the flames die down before starting to cook. Alternatively, preheat the oven to 400°F. Soak 8 wooden toothpicks for at least 20 minutes. Rinse the sea bass and pat it dry with paper towels, then score the flesh on both sides. In a small bowl, combine all the ingredients for the marinade. Open the banana leaves and brush each one with a little olive oil. Place a sea bass in the middle of each leaf, then spoon over the marinade. Stuff the belly cavities of the fish with the sliced lime, ginger, garlic, chiles, and mint leaves. Wrap the banana leaf around each one to form a loose package, then secure the ends with the toothpicks. Place the packages on the barbecue and close the lid, if you have one. Alternately, cook on a cookie sheet in the oven. Cook for 20 to 25 minutes, depending on the size and thickness of the fish. Serve in the packages. It's great with Grilled Pineapple, Mango Salsa, and Coconut Rice. Lobster & Shrimp Moqueca Serves 4 Moqueca ("mo-keh-ka") is a coconut seafood dish from Bahia in tropical eastern Brazil. The name comes from an African word for fish stew, and white fish is often used, but for our version we've chosen juicy shrimp and lobster, inspired by a trip to Siri Mole restaurant in Rio. 1 tablespoon olive oil 2 tablespoons palm oil, or more olive oil 1 onion, finely chopped 1 small red bell pepper, seeded and finely diced 1 small green bell pepper, seeded and finely diced 3 garlic cloves, minced 2 plum tomatoes, seeded and finely diced 2 heaping tablespoons tomato paste 13/4 cups coconut milk 12 ounces raw shrimp, shelled and deveined 9 ounces cooked lobster tail (or flesh from 1 cooked lobster), cut into bite-size pieces juice of 1/2 lime, plus extra wedges to serve small handful of cilantro, leaves chopped sea salt and freshly ground black pepper Heat the oils in a large heavy pan, add the onion, peppers, and garlic and season with salt and pepper. Stir well and cook gently for 6 to 8 minutes, stirring, until softened. Stir in the diced tomatoes and tomato paste and cook for 2 more minutes. Pour in the coconut milk and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer for about 5 minutes. Add the shrimp and cook gently for 3 to 4 minutes, until they have just turned opaque. Add the lobster and cook for another 2 minutes. Turn off the heat, add the lime juice and cilantro, then taste and adjust the seasoning. Ladle into individual warmed bowls and serve with lime wedges. Oven-Roasted Ratatouille Serves 4-8 Making a traditional ratatouille involves using every skillet in your kitchen because the vegetables are all cooked separately and then joined at the very end. This version also glorifies the integrity of the various vegetables and their cooking times, but you just keep adding them in order to the skillet. One pan and you're done. 3/4 pound small Italian eggplant, cut into 1-inch cubes 1/4 cup salt 1 sweet onion, such as Vidalia or Bermuda, halved and cut into 1/2-inch slices 1 red bell pepper, seeds and ribs removed, cut into 1/2-inch slices 1/3 cup olive oil 4 garlic cloves, minced 2 tablespoons chopped fresh rosemary 2 teaspoons fresh thyme leaves 1 small zucchini, halved and cut into 1/2-inch slices 1 small yellow squash, halved and cut into 1/2-inch slices 6 ripe plum tomatoes, cored, seeded, and cut into 6 pieces each Salt and ground black pepper Preheat the oven to 425ºF and preheat a 12-inch skillet in the oven. Put the eggplant cubes in a mixing bowl with 4 cups cold water. Add the salt and stir well. Place a plate on top of the cubes to keep them submerged and let soak for 20 minutes. Drain the eggplant in a colander and rinse under cold running water to remove excess salt. Squeeze handfuls of the cubes in your hands to remove as much moisture as possible, transferring them to a cloth dish towel, then wring them out in the towel to remove even more moisture. Add the eggplant, onion, and bell pepper to the hot skillet. Mix the oil with the garlic, rosemary, and thyme in a small bowl and drizzle over the vegetables, tossing to coat. Roast in oven for 15 minutes. Remove the skillet from the oven, add the zucchini and yellow squash, stirring to coat, and roast in oven for 10 minutes. Add the tomatoes to the pan, and season to taste with salt and pepper. Roast in oven for an additional 12 to 15 minutes, or until the tomatoes soften. Serve hot, at room temperature, or chilled. Stir-Fried Thai Chicken with Basil Serves 6-8 2 pounds boneless, skinless chicken breast halves, trimmed 1/4 cup Thai fish sauce 2 tablespoons Chinese oyster sauce 1 tablespoon granulated sugar 2 teaspoons rice wine vinegar 3 jalapeño or serrano chiles 3 cups firmly packed fresh Thai basil leaves, divided 6 garlic cloves, peeled 2 tablespoons vegetable oil 5 large shallots, thinly sliced Cooked jasmine rice for serving, hot Cover a baking sheet with plastic wrap, arrange the chicken on it, and freeze for 15 minutes, or until stiff. Cut the chicken into thin slices on the diagonal, then cut the slices into 1/2-inch shreds. Transfer the chicken to a bowl. Combine the fish sauce, oyster sauce, sugar, and vinegar in a small bowl and stir well to dissolve the sugar. Add half of the mixture to the chicken shreds and toss well to coat. Discard the stems from the chiles and dice the chiles (for a less spicy dish, remove the seeds and ribs as well). Combine the chiles, 11/2 cups of the basil, and the garlic in a food processor fitted with the steel blade and pulse to chop fine. Heat a 12-inch skillet over medium heat. Add the oil and tilt the pan around to coat it evenly. Add the chopped basil mixture and shallots and cook, stirring frequently, for 4 to 6 minutes, or until the shallots soften. Add the chicken and cook, stirring frequently, for 4 to 5 minutes, or until the chicken is cooked through and no longer pink. Add the remaining basil leaves and the remaining sauce mixture and cook for 1 minute. Serve immediately with rice. OZONE: The Miracle Medicine Oxygen’s reputation precedes it. The human body is largely composed of it, most of our metabolic energy production comes from it, and all our internal processes are regulated by it. In fact we can’t live without it. When every cell is properly oxygenated, the immune system can function and maintain itself relatively undisturbed. So it’s clear that oxygen is an integral piece of the wellness puzzle, but what about ozone? Only one little molecule separates it from our beloved oxygen, yet the term is bound to leave many scratching their heads. And no, we’re not talking about the ozone layer or ozone pollution. The medical ozone we speak of is known for ridding the body of toxins, eradicating sickness, and giving hope to those who otherwise would have spent their lives riddled with chronic disease. Together with oxygen, it just may be the diseasefighting superhero you never knew existed.
too unusual, but contrary to our unfounded fears, it’s not only safer than almost all traditional medications, but also effective when they have failed. As a founding member of the American Academy of Ozonotherapy (AAO) and The International Association for Ozone in Healthcare and Dentistry (IAOHD), Dr. Robins has lectured around the world on medical ozone’s benefits. Ozone therapy is remarkably safe when done correctly, but there are side effects—just not the kind you want to avoid. People fall asleep easier, sleep better, and have more energy. Their nails and hair grow longer, stronger, and faster. Their complexion is healthier, and their blood circulates better. Also, it helps add endurance during exercise.
We target people who have not been able to get well using traditional medicinal care. A seasoned veteran at separating fact from fiction when it comes to his work, Dr. Robins welcomes questions and looks forward to opening doors for those who are no longer willing to accept that disease is just a fact of life. Since 1990, Dr. Robins has administered more than 185,000 safe Direct IV ozone therapy and Major Autohemotherapy treatments. By combining medical-grade O2 (oxygen) and O3 (ozone gas) and safely delivering it into the body, he has joined the ranks of over 45 thousand physicians in over 50 countries across the world who have successfully eliminated distressed patients from diseases like Herpes 1,2 and 6, shingles, multiple sclerosis, Lyme disease, rheumatoid arthritis, Hepatitis B and C, HPV, diabetic ulcers and peripheral neuropathy, candidiasis, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, macular degeneration, glaucoma, and even AIDS. Recently, through the targeted use of ozone therapy, he was successful in significantly reducing two patient’s Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD), a painful condition (a.k.a. CRPS) that only worsens over time to a tolerable level, which had never been done before. Despite such a stellar track record, ozone therapy is not usually the treatment of choice for those patients struggling with disease. When they come to Dr. Robins for help, it’s usually because every other doctor they have tried has been unable to offer relief. “Big Pharma” would lose too much money if this nonpatentable medicine were readily available, so along with the FDA they have worked to suppress media attention. So while some other countries legally mandate the use of ozone in all pre-and postop instances to prevent infection, ours remains relatively in the dark, unaware of the benefits and impressive results of ozone. “Since childhood, we have been brought up to believe that ‘pills’ are the answer to all our health problems injecting a ‘gas’ into our veins sounds risky and
