The quality of our work has been recognized through publication and awards. We have received more than 125 design excellence awards, including awards from the American Institute of Architects, the Boston Society of Architects, and the Interior Design Institute.

Healthcare

The healthcare facility can be conceived of as a village, with a main street that organizes, along its path entryways and offices, nurse stations and waiting areas all contributing to a more relaxed and familiar experience for patient, staff, and administrators. From this central spine neighborhoods of special care are formed to further clarify identifiable precincts. Individual scale is further enhanced as the provision of private ‘homes’ or single patient rooms connect to a new, more personal definition of one’s space. Respecting patient privacy is an invaluable aspect to creating a less anxious customer. Industry innovations are reviewed through close collaboration with consultants and specialists. Intimate consultations with the occupants of our spaces ensure that our design philosophies are clearly expressed with project-specific direction. Our ability to re-imagine the human experience, in a variety of circumstantial conditions allows the final space planning and organization to flow from the architecture to the person experiencing it. A healing environment is imagined as a place defined by humanizing materials. Acknowledging the individuality within a community, another core principle, relieves anxiety and encourages open communication between doctor and patient. Intimate spaces, set within a larger framework of community spaces, provide enclosure and comfort in one’s surroundings, and in turn, support the healing process.

Therapeutic environments have been proven to be cost effective by improving patient outcomes, reducing length of stay and by enhancing staff satisfaction, recruitment, and retention of staff. Our incorporation of natural light and connection to the outdoors with exterior views also generates natural, positive energy in these spaces. We believe a direct connection to our natural environment is the first step towards creating familiarity and recognition of one’s surroundings. We pride ourselves on building strong working relationships with our clients; this relationship employs us with specific information and understanding of their culture, needs, and desires to develop suitable desigan solutions. As problem solvers and creators, this knowledge base allows us to plan for flexibility for the future and imagine the unforeseen potential of a project. Redefining expectations and exploring future possibilities is the key to innovation of public spaces. Re-imagining the process and procedural functions in the delivery of health care will create vibrant yet effective spaces for patients, doctors and staff alike. Our experience with detailed programming allows us to meet the clients’ goals and discover unexpected needs and future potential of their space.

Interior Design

We take seriously the integration of design and function. Our interior design philosophy is in concert with our overall design philosophy, which strives to provide a benevolent environment that enhances collegiality and the sharing of ideas. We recognize that appropriate lighting and sound levels, finishes and furniture selections, and programming all contribute to the making of a better place.

APT | Foundation at One Long Wharf New Haven, CT

Following our comprehensive renovation of the public spaces of the One Long Wharf Office Building, Newman continues to work with the building owners, Newmark Knight Frank, on an on-call basis; including tenant fit-out, office design, and additional renovations to the building corridors. We recently completed design for the 20,000 SF tenant fit-out for the Agency on the Aging for South Central Connecticut. We reorganized existing work spaces and added additional square feet to accommodate growth. We worked directly with the client to develop space pans and a complete set of Construction documents.

As the practice grew in their existing facility the space became disorganized and inefficient. The need to reorganize and expand for future growth required them to move to a new location.

Founded in 1970, the APT Foundation’s mission is to promote the health and recovery for those who live with substance use disorders and/or mental illness.

Newman was responsible for programming with the client and for coordination with the building Owner. Materials and finishes were selected for durability and ease of maintenance. The flood of natural light along with bright colors for the exam and treatment rooms help create a more comfortable, pleasing space. All spaces were furnished with the client’s existing furniture.

“It is not surprising that Newman Architects has received so many honors and awards for their work. New buildings speak clearly of their own time and respect for another time, particularly when historic buildings are nearby. The firm has been keenly aware of the needs of very different clients and of the message they are trying to convey whether they be sponsors of affordable housing, city fathers, travelers or educators. The overarching impression is a firm deeply attuned to the public good, aware of the impact of their work and determined to be responsive. There is a generosity of spirit in Newman’s approach to architecture and planning that sets them apart; that fact becomes clear when reviewing the range of their contributions for the last twenty years.“ Colin G. Campbell President and CEO, Colonial Williamsburg Former President, Wesleyan University & Rockefeller Brothers Fund

“In addition to the knowledge Newman Architects brings to the table, they are excellent listeners. They are open to the client and are always willing to listen and to understand our needs…Newman Architects also added glamour to the ordinary concept of suites. Our award-winning building is praised by students, parents and other staff at the University. It is a functional design yet it manages to capture the eye and take advantage of the surroundings… Newman Architects go beyond what we expect from architects. They have a passion for designing environments that support the University’s vision and the aspirations of a housing department.” Logan Trimble Director of Operations, Department of Residential Life University of Connecticut
