For Your Information YRBiz Series: Celebrating Women in Business - Exploring the Art of Storytelling Successful marketing strategies today have a strong emphasis on imagery and a unique, compelling message that resonates at a personal level. As part of International Women’s Day week, the sold-out YRBiz event “surfaced the ways of women”, with workshops exploring imagery, music and the art of storytelling.

Keynote speaker Judy Maddren, former CBC broadcaster and host of World Report, shares her inspiring story.

Sarid from Treefrog shares images Attendees used a guided workbook that convey her personal strengths in to uncover their unique images, an exciting workshop. sounds and stories.

What’s Up With Innovation at the Chamber? Two months ago, we shared that the Chamber staff and members were starting work on an Innovation Strategy for the Chamber of Commerce. This exercise has generated many exciting ideas, some of which can be implemented immediately; others will take a bit more time. It has highlighted the importance of having an innovation strategy for any organization. Like having a balanced investment portfolio, having an innovation plan that includes a mix of incremental, moderate and radical/game-changing innovations, is the best way to ensure continued growth and development for a business. To foster a discussion about innovation at a community level, the Town of Newmarket and the Chamber of Commerce hosted a successful Innovation Showcase at the recent Home & Lifestyle Show. Partner organizations including ventureLAB and Southlake Regional Health Centre, along with local businesses Myostat Motion Control, Sci-Tek and Brainspace Magazine gave us a taste of innovations, showing off robotic lego, 3D printers, Telepresence Robots and Augmented Reality. These exciting technologies have the power and potential to change the way that we do business, learn and work.

The showcase generated a number of inspiring conversations with Chamber members about how they can use the technologies to help grow their own businesses. Internally at the Chamber, we are actively pursuing options for mobile commerce, using innovative presentation platforms like Prezi, incorporating teambased collaboration tools and next-generation workforce tools. We look forward to sharing and discussing these with our members. With community stakeholders, we are investigating strategic initiatives to help accelerate innovation for Newmarket.

Imagine:

a Zero-Footprint community; a community with the fastest connectivity; a place with single sign-on to streamline access to services and resources; programs to support start-up companies; a place to play with new technologies and innovations. It is an exciting time, with an “Abundance” of opportunities for us (as referenced by Peter Diamandis, Founder of the X-Prize for Commercial Space Flight). The most important challenge is to continue to build the strategic partnerships and collaborations that will allow us to collectively act on these opportunities, to have your participation in these discussions, and to support our leaders in pursuing these to a brighter future.
