Newmarket Double Give-Back Be a Community Superhero This Holiday Season On November 1st The Newmarket Double Give-Back Campaign was launched. The unique crowdfunding effort using the Indiegogo online fundraising website, is aimed at supporting local charities and enabling businesses and community members to purchase unique perks that celebrate community contribution.

to step up and tell others about it. It seemed like a natural fit with all the challenges that are happening on Davis.” Participating charities include Community and Home Assistance to Seniors (CHATS), DeafBlind Ontario Services, Heart and Stroke Foundation, Inn From the Cold, Newmarket Lions Club, Newmarket Food Pantry and Rose of Sharon Services for Young Mothers, among others. We have set an aggressive goal of $10,000 to be raised for the campaign with an end-date of December 12, 2014. The Newmarket Chamber of Commerce would like to thank our community partners and businesses that have contributed support and resources to make the campaign possible. A special thank you to Oxygen Media, Sugar C Media and Cut to the Chase Promotions: our active team of superheroes.

The Double Give-Back is in the execution of the giving. All of the donations raised through the campaign will be used to buy urgently needed goods for local charities, but these goods will all be purchased at businesses in the Davis Drive construction corridor. All of the participating charities were asked to identify specific needs (in the form of goods and services) – toys, kitchen tools, winter clothing, non-perishable food items and even a hearing aid were just some of the items named – all can be purchased from retailers on Davis Drive. While every business in the corridor may not be able to benefit directly from a campaign related purchase, the hope is that the continued focus on Davis Drive businesses and the reminder that behind every business there is a family will help shoppers to think Davis this holiday season. “We were looking for a very creative way to support the Davis businesses,” chamber president and CEO Debra Scott said. We’re counting on the community

To make a contribution and become a Community Superhero visit: www.igg.me/at/newmarketdoublegiveback We’d like to recognize the Community Champions and Community Protectors who have come forward to support the campaign:

Innovation Update York Region Part of “Digital Corridor”

What is York Region’s role in this Corridor?

California has Silicon Valley. Ontario now has the Digital Corridor. Silicon Valley is known for innovation and entrepreneurship. Here in Ontario there exists one of the most concentrated centers of technology leadership and growth in the world, and it has not received its due – until now. The Branham Group, Canada’s leading tech-sector analysts, have identified Ontario’s own Digital Corridor – a concentrated cluster of innovative technology firms across the York Region – GTA- Kitchener-Waterloo and Hamilton areas.

More than 3,900 technology firms are based in the region, making it one of the largest areas of technology concentration within the Digital Corridor.

Here are the facts: • More than 176,000 skilled professionals working in the technology sector, • These professionals are generating an average of $387,000 in revenue per employee • Seven of the world’s largest multi-national technology firms conduct R&D in the Digital Corridor, • ICT companies located there have combined annual revenues in excess of $37.5 billion

“The exceptionally strong collaboration among our stakeholder organizations—including private-sector companies, three outstanding regional and local hospitals (MacKenzie Health, Southlake Regional Health Centre and Markham Stouffville), world-class educational leaders York University and Seneca College, regional and municipal governments— has been instrumental in the development of this dynamic and fast-growing tech cluster”, said Jeremy Laurin, CEO of ventureLAB. “We’re excited to see the combined strength of the regions in the Digital Corridor being brought together under a common brand.” Newmarket’s focus on developing the ICT and Life Sciences clusters will ensure that the Town’s businesses play a critical role in the evolution of the Digital Corridor today and in the future.
