Your Economic Outlook What Does the Economy Have in Store for 2014? What does the economy have in store for 2014 and how does our regional economy stack up against other regions in Ontario, Canada and the World? The Chamber has a number of resources and events to help you navigate and answer these questions.
Online Reports
Pre-Budget Submission The Newmarket & Aurora Chambers of Commerce have participated in pre-budget meetings with Newmarket-Aurora MP, Lois Brown and have made recommendations to address: • Personal Taxation • Innovation and Commercialization • Employment, Labour Markets and Unions • Canada-European Union Comprehensive Economic Trade Agreement (CETA) • Economic Recovery
Canadian Chamber of Commerce 2014-15 Economic Outlook The Canadian Chamber of Commerce observes that, although Canada continues to recover from the recession better than other countries, the pace of growth has been slower than hoped. Consumer spending and housing activity are more resilient than expected, while the slow pace of global growth and ongoing competitiveness challenges have reduced demand for our exports and weighed on manufacturing production. Businesses also remain cautious when it comes to hiring and investing.
All reports can be found at: newmarketchamber.ca/economicforecast
Ontario Chamber of Commerce Regional Outlook The Ontario Chamber of Commerce indicates slow growth will continue in most Ontario economic regions into 2014, with some improvement expected in 2015. External and domestic economic conditions will not be conducive to a significant growth upturn in the near term.
Ms. Gulati will share The Global Economic Outlook: Is the Minefield in the Rear View Mirror? What the forecasts reveal about: Canadian economic growth prospects, Demand for Canada’s goods and services abroad, Interest rates and where they are headed, commodity prices and the Canadian dollar, existing and new real estate overview and regional disparities.
The disparate economic performance among Ontario’s major regions shows few signs of abating in the next two years, the Toronto, Kitchener-Waterloo and Barrie regions will continue to set the pace and lead other regions in overall economic growth. These regions have an industry mix more oriented to growth industries and are less dependent on industries facing more difficult market conditions.

For Your Information What’s Your Innovation Ambition? Innovation has been a hot topic of discussion at the Chamber recently, as the staff, Board and members explore what the Chamber of the Future can be. Innovation is a word that means different things to different people, raising images of big R&D investments to changing an internal process. In essence, however, innovation is about doing things differently. It requires a culture that nurtures creative ideas and seeks ways to implement them. A recent article in the Harvard Business Review described three types of innovation. The first type, “core innovation”, centres on enhancements to existing products and services; the second focuses on pursuing related products, services and markets, called “adjacent” innovation, and the third type is “transformational” innovation, meaning brand new products and services to meet new customer needs or new markets. The latter type of innovation is often called “disruptive” innovation, in that it has the potential to change existing or established business models and markets. Think about Polaroid cameras vs. digital and the current disruptions taking place in advertising. Any organization can only take on so many initiatives at one time, so the key is to decide on what your innovation ambition is, and how a mixture of different types of innovation can get you there. For most organizations, incremental innovation is the fastest and least resource intensive option to pursue. However, in an era of fast changing technology and markets, having an eye on the next new thing is also important.
Much like having a balanced portfolio, organizations should have a balance of innovations based on their ambitions. For the Chamber, we are in the process of developing our Innovation Strategy which will touch on everything that we currently do, and new directions for the future. Most importantly, nurturing an organizational culture of innovation will ensure that we are always challenging ourselves to serve our members current and future needs, and those of our community. We invite you to join in the conversation and share your ideas about innovation on the Chamber’s Facebook page.
