Your Newmarket Home Show Awesome and Cool Technologies Will Be on Display The Newmarket Chamber and its partners are excited to be launching an innovation showcase at the upcoming Home Show, March 28-30th. Drop by the booth in the second arena to interact with an amazing telepresence robot that uses the same technology as the Segway; it’s like the Shelbot only better (a reference to the TV show Big Bang Theory). The Double Robot is being demonstrated by local company, Myostat Motion Control. They are also bringing a Makerbot 3D printer that you can watch in action. Crowtrees Studios will be showcasing a 3D colour scanner, and will be doing scans of the attendees. Taking only 10-15 sec., you will have a detailed 3D image of yourself. There will be other fascinating interactive technology exhibits from Southlake Regional Health Centre and ventureLAB, our Regional Innovation Centre. Don’t miss seeing the future at the Home Show.

If you are a subscriber to Brainspace Magazine, a wonderful and dynamic resource to spark kids’ interest in learning about science, you will have seen Augmented Reality (AR) in action. By hovering your smart phone or tablet over an image, a video or application will be launched to provide an enhanced user experience. It works like a QR code, but is essentially a process of scanning a digital image to unlock another level of information or experience. It adds layers of information and meaning in a real time, enhanced environment. The Newmarket Chamber is experimenting with the technology as part of the Home Show, working with our members and exhibitors to explore how Augmented Reality could be harnessed as a fantastic and engaging marketing strategy for businesses. The potential for the technology is endless. There are already AR apps that will translate words in an image to another language. You can navigate a tourist area, see menus for restaurants and discover history about the location you are in. With so many possibilities, the Newmarket Chamber is eager to work with its member businesses to come up with creative and innovative ways to use Augmented Reality. Try it out with our Newsletter cover: 1. Download the free Layar app to your smart phone or tablet (it works on every device except BlackBerry). 2. Scan the full cover of this Newsletter. 3. Discover the interactive content.

Augmented Reality (AR) Imagine looking at a picture of a T-Rex dinosaur, and suddenly its head turns to look at you, coming to life with a loud roar and baring of razor sharp teeth. Sound futuristic? Not at all – you can experience that today! It’s called Augmented Reality, and it’s popping up in innovative print magazines and newspapers.

Lara Veltkamp, Chief Engagement Officer at Watershed Marketing Group, led a marketing workshop at the Chamber January 28. Lara shared insights on how to reach your intended audience in any market, in any economy and how to bring clarity to your messaging.

Smart Commute Drives Awareness during Carpool Week During the week of February 3 to 9 Smart Commute Central York (SCCY) promoted carpooling as a commuting option. SCCY held outreaches at 12 member businesses and spoke to over 600 employees about the benefits of carpooling which include saving money, time and the environment. This year we saw a 50 per cent increase in the number of new users on Carpool Zone compared to last year and an 82 per cent increase in carpools formed. CarpoolZone.ca now has over 16,000 users across the Greater Toronto and Hamilton area and can help you find the perfect carpool match. SmartCommuteCY.ca Photo 1: Southlake Regional Health Centre’s Smart Commute Coordinator, Katharine helps an employee register on Carpool Zone. During Carpool Week, Southlake held numerous events throughout the week to promote carpooling. As a result the number of Southlake employees registered on Carpoolzone doubled during Carpool Week. For Your Information 2014 Top 10 Barriers to Competitiveness The Canadian Chamber of Commerce recently unveiled its Top 10 Barriers to Competitiveness for 2014. The Canadian Chamber undertook this initiative two years ago to draw attention to the barriers that are holding back Canada’s progress and to urge all levels of government to act more swiftly to improve our country’s ability to compete globally. Canadian Chamber President and CEO Perrin Beatty stated: “Since launching this initiative, in cooperation with our network of chambers of commerce, we have made great progress in furthering our competiveness agenda, particularly in addressing the barrier our members identified as being the greatest impediment to the success of Canadian business: the growing skills gap. The federal government and several provincial and territorial governments have also named this issue as the country’s biggest challenge.” Addressing the Top 10 Barriers to Competitiveness will go a long way towards restoring Canada’s competitiveness. The Canadian Chamber is calling on its own membership, on governments, on educators, on labour organizations, and others to tackle and overcome these barriers. Tolerating them is simply not an option. Effectively addressing these 10 barriers will sharpen Canada’s competitive edge and allow us to prosper in the global economy. “We have a choice,” added Beatty. “Either we act urgently to improve our competitiveness or we will pay a high price in lost jobs and prosperity. Working together, we’ve started to address these problems over the past two years. The challenge for 2014 is to build on this progress and start closing the gap between Canadian businesses and our international competitors.”

2014 Top 10 Barriers to Competitiveness: • Skills shortages • Uncompetitive travel and tourism strategies • Inadequate plans for addressing deficiencies in public infrastructure • Barriers to success in global markets • Internal barriers to trade • A complex and costly tax system • Lack of clear sustainability policies • The severe shortage of economic development tools for businesses in Canada’s territories • Inconsistent regulatory policies between Canada and the U.S. • Insufficient support for innovation in Canadian manufacturing For more information on The Top 10 Barriers to Competitiveness visit Chamber.ca
