Happy New Year A Message from Kevin Murdoch – Board Chair As the 2015 Chairman of the Board, I am honored to serve the Newmarket Chamber of Commerce. Along with our outstanding board members and staff, our Chamber represents a network of dedicated individuals working together to improve the lives of those who choose to live, work, shop, and play here. From the Chamber perspective, 2014 was a great year which saw an increase in membership, sustained event attendance, and enhanced member exposure marked by the first year the Members’ Business Directory has been distributed directly to consumer households. As we move into 2015, we hope to continue with this positive momentum, remaining well positioned to provide new benefits and services to our members. Recently, the Board has approved the launch of a new quarterly magazine which will be mailed to all businesses in Newmarket and will also be stocked in various locations in and around the community. This magazine will focus on providing businesses with a wealth of information to help them succeed; including articles on new business trends, upcoming events,

economic development and innovation updates and other resources to help your business grow. Building on the success of the expanded distribution of our Business Directory, our new quarterly magazine will be a valuable advertising tool to help increase visibility and provide an excellent opportunity for your business. We will continue to provide the same quality signature events, such as our annual Home Show and will be expanding to include other opportunities to showcase local companies, such as a Small Business Expo that is tentatively scheduled for the fall. More details about the Expo will be released soon. Peer Groups and Panel Discussions will continue and a Networking PeerGroup focused on member to member business referrals has also recently formed to provide quality benefits to all members. I look forward to working with our talented and energetic board of directors, staff, and community partners in 2015. I am sure that together, we will continue to offer a fresh perspective and new ideas to help maintain our active Chamber community. Thank you for your valued membership and I look forward to serving as your Chair in the coming year.

Chamber Launches “Your Business” Quarterly Magazine in 2015 You may not have known it as you sat down to read through this newsletter but this issue marks the final monthly newsletter that you will receive from the Newmarket Chamber of Commerce! We are very excited to announce that starting in March 2015 we will be moving to a quarterly magazine format for Your Business. The new format will be a professionally designed 24 page magazine. The main driver behind this change is the ability to curate a greater wealth of information and insight to share with the business community. The new magazine will be delivered to all businesses in Newmarket and will be stocked at a number of locations in Newmarket where businesses gather. The magazine will include updates on Economic Development, Policy Changes, Business Trends, Social Media, Learning, Community, innovation and more to help businesses stay informed and stay ahead in a rapidly changing marketplace. On Our Cover Rodrigo and Associates Win Chamber Kickstart Promotion

This past quarter, the Newmarket Chamber of Commerce ran its first ever membership drive. The campaign was sent out to all nonmember businesses in Newmarket, with a few objectives in mind: • Raise the profile of the Newmarket Chamber • Create a set of memorable images and phrases that communicate the benefits of membership • Aid in the attraction of new members • Businesses who contacted the Chamber, in response to the promotion, were entered into a draw to be featured on the cover of our January newsletter. The winner of the contest was Rodrigo and Associates (Anthony Rodrigo featured on our cover). We asked Anthony to share some information on himself and his company: Newmarket is close to my heart. The funny thing is, as a healthcare provider and product designer of illness insurance, it’s not a stretch to believe that I am and have always been involved in sport and best practices for illness avoidance. In August 2011, I made an unusual trip to Newmarket. My wife and I laugh about it now, but the truth is my unplanned visit was by ambulance to Southlake Hospital. My routine annual medical check-up hadn’t detected my 99% and 70% blockage in my LAD and at 42, I encountered a near death experience - a sudden and unexpected heart attack. What I learned from this is that there are no coincidences in life and (for me) everything continues to happen for a reason.

Prior to and following my sojourn to Southlake, I have worked under the wide umbrella of healthcare & health risk insurance, from piloting a Canadian initiative to treat and assess sexually offending behaviour in high risk populations, to being invited to join a private marketing firm, designing specialized critical illness insurance products and using my education as a healthcare provider to create a modern framework for employers when buying health compensation and benefits for their workforce. When you are involved in the design of a product, from whiteboard to the street, there is infinite value in meeting and collaborating with all the stakeholders involved to successfully enter the insurance market in Canada. I established Rodrigo and Associates in 1999 with a vision to contribute new thinking and delivery of insurance products and healthcare opportunities to all Canadians. The concept was to engage all levels of health through health strategies of prevention and intervention, not just treatment and recovery. I feel grateful for all of the experiences I’ve had along my career. They’ve prepared me to remain relevant in an industry of high competition and a quickly changing landscape. I am not sure what the future holds but my plan is to continue educating and sharing what I have learned with employers, focusing on transparency, tradition, innovation, social awareness & financial responsibility through our product. A quick shoutout to the cardio staff at Southlake - Thanks again Dr. Goldman & team.

For Your Information Startup Weekend Coming to York Region What is Startup Weekend? Startup Weekends are weekend-long, handson experiences where entrepreneurs and aspiring entrepreneurs develop startup ideas from concept to pitch. Along the way, concepts are validated for viability, feasibility and profitability. On average, half of Startup Weekend’s attendees have technical or design backgrounds, the other half have business backgrounds. What happens during Startup Weekend? Beginning with open mic pitches on Friday, attendees bring their best ideas and inspire others to join their team. Over Saturday and Sunday, teams focus on customer development, validating their ideas, practicing LEAN Startup Methodologies and building a minimal viable product. On Sunday evening, teams present their startup to a panel of entrepreneur judges. Throughout the weekend, teams have access to mentors and coaches to help participants. What will you get out of being part of Startup Weekend York Region? A phenomenal story to tell your friends, for starters. And maybe even a new business (like the guys who created Mimic The App did last time). At a minimum, you will meet some new people and gain new perspective.

If this all sounds like something you’d be interested in, check out (and register) at: www.up.co/communities/canada/yorkregion/ startup-weekend/5272
