Building Community Debating Our Future Recently, the Chamber of Commerce hosted the allcandidates debate for the provincial election. It’s a role that the Chamber has performed for many years, in partnership with The ERA. As a neutral party, the Chamber provides opportunities for candidates to share their views on key issues, such as growth, changing demographics and a shifting economic base. The challenge of hosting debates is getting to the heart of candidate views specific to the community, and covering the wide range of issues that people are passionate about. The Chamber and The ERA work together to ask for questions from the community. These questions are reviewed by a neutral group of volunteer Board members, and then are used to guide the debate.

Trend-Setting York Region Employee Accepts Award in Bike to Work Day Attire! The weather was perfect for Smart Commute Central York’s 8th Annual Bike to Work Day on May 26. Over 170 people cycled to Riverwalk Commons in Newmarket and were treated to a delicious breakfast and a free t-shirt. One of those cyclists was York Region’s Community Engagement Coordinator, Michelle who coordinated the Tap’d In Water Mobile trailer to be on hand and provide cyclists with fresh drinking water.

For the upcoming municipal election on October 27th, we will be asking the candidates to share their specific views on key questions, and their responses will be published to the Chamber website. As we work through plans for the next candidate debate on October 7th at the Newmarket Theatre for our municipal elections, we are asking for your feedback on how we can improve the debate. With most positions being contested, the municipal race this year will be sure to bring divergent views on economic development, infrastructure investments, budgets, taxes and services.

If you have a suggestion or would like to propose a specific question for the candidates, please send us a note at info@newmarketchamber.ca

“As with many other cyclists who attended Bike to Work Day, I had other commitments that morning. After the event came to a close, I had to race back to a Commissioner’s breakfast and because so many York Region employees biked to work, our bike racks were full and I had to find a different spot to ‘park.’ As a result, I didn’t have time to change before going to the breakfast. Unbeknownst to me, I received an award from the Commissioner in front of a large group in my yoga capris and my ‘Bike To Work Day’ t-shirt! It was definitely a memorable moment we are still laughing about!” We think Michelle looks amazing in Bike to Work Day blue! Approximately 325 cyclists from the Smart Commute Central York Network cycled to work or school that day, including 52 York Region employees. Event Sponsor

Innovation Updates Vision-Setting: Gigabit Corridor in Newmarket

An Exciting Peek Into the Future: OCE Discovery Conference 2014

Recently, the Town of Newmarket and its partners hosted a team of experts from US cities that have deployed Gigabit networks in partnership with the private sector. Meeting with business owners, developers and community leaders, concepts were explored as to how a leading edge, high speed network could support the long term strategic plans for the community. A Gigabit community is one that has ultra-fast Internet connectivity for residents and businesses, typically more than 100 times faster than what is commercially available. In the US, Google has been instrumental in changing the Internet landscape, working with cities such as Kansas, Austin and Salt Lake to fundamentally advance connectivity infrastructure outside of traditional models. Internationally, other cities in Singapore, New Zealand, Australia, Korea and France have invested in Gigabit infrastructures for their economic development priorities.

The annual innovation summit at the Discovery Conference hosted 2500+ attendees and featured an astonishing showcase of ideas and inventions. Several local companies were featured at the York Region pavilion, organized by ventureLAB. An eye-opening presentation was delivered by two Canadians from Singularity University – a US program geared to training leaders on how to navigate exponential, disruptive changes.

Key to a successful Gigabit strategy is leveraging existing assets to create momentum and interest for partnering with the private sector. In Newmarket, owning our municipal hydro distribution network provides opportunities to leverage pole infrastructure and smart meters to build out a community network, an advantage not shared by most other communities. The consultations identified several other opportunities related to the Secondary Plan, the intensification planned for Davis Drive and Yonge Street, Main Street/Riverwalk Commons, and addressing infrastructure deficits in the Harry Walker industrial areas. A report on the findings will be presented to Council later this summer.

These changes are driving major shifts impacting all segments of society: it used to take 20 years to grow an opportunity into a Billion $ enterprise. Google did it in nine years. Facebook did it in three. Groupon did it in less than a year. The efficiencies of technologies are doubling each year. It has been predicted that 100% of the world’s energy could be delivered by solar in 25 years, with major implications for resource-based economies such as Canada’s. Robotic, self-driving cars are here. All major car manufacturers have announced their own versions by 2020. But new entrants in the market are more agile – Google and Tesla have stated they will have cars on the market by 2015. There will be consolidation in the marketplace, and major shifts in locations of manufacturers. What will the impact be to Ontario’s economic base and how will our communities change? Another example of these changes is the half-life of a skill; it used to be 30 years. It is now five years and continues to decrease. All these examples have a common thread: they are disruptive to the existing economic and societal systems that we have built. They are also on exponential curves, meaning that they will happen whether or not we are ready for them. The key message is that we need to start discussing these trends more openly and asking our leaders for their vision/views. Welcome to the Innovation Imperative! July 2014
