March’s Awesome Winner

This Event was sponsored by Neighbourhood Network (Magna for Community). During their presentation, Steve and Erin reviewed many ways in which businesses and employees can become involved volunteers within our community.

The Alexander Muir Public School “Eco Team” was recently awarded a thousand dollars for their plan to build container gardens and grow vegetables in them. Their goal is to expand their gardens, and donate fresh food to the local food bank and shelters. Last year the ‘Eco Team” painted yellow fish on storm drains to raise awareness of the dangers of pouring hazardous materials down storm drains. They are now in the process of creating bottle-shaped information sheets to distribute to homes. Their message is: tap water is safer and more environmentally friendly...not to mention more economical than Nazreen, Siya, Eleni, Debra, Scott, Michael, plastic water bottles. For Your Information Anti-Spam Legislation: New Way of Doing Business On July 1, 2014, CASL: Canada’s Anti-Spam Legislation, comes into effect. You will no longer be able to communicate, by Commercial Electronic Message (CEM) with anyone who has not given you “prior” permission to do so. • The same opt-in consents and standards are required and apply to the installation of a computer program on a computer, smart phone or other computing device. • CASL applies to everyone including incorporated and unincorporated businesses, non-profits, individuals, colleges and universities, trade associations, hospitals, and more. Only registered charities and political parties seeking donations are exempt from the legislation. • A CEM is any communication which entices someone to buy something – period - and after June 30, you can’t send a message asking someone to give you permission to send them a CEM. • CASL covers email, SMS Texts, instant messages & social network messages. Penalties of $1 million for individuals and $10 million for organizations, may be imposed by the CRTC or delegate, and are intended to encourage compliance. Violations are not a criminal offense, can be appealed to a federal court, and you are not liable if due diligence can be demonstrated. Resources and information are available online through: fightspam.gc.ca and chamber.ca/resources/ casl/

Innovation News and Updates Innovation and the role it plays in our community’s long term growth and prosperity was highlighted in the Mayor’s Annual Luncheon address last month. It is a theme that is being raised at all levels of government and with many business and organizations, as the Innovation Imperative begins to drive decisions and strategies. The first-ever Innovation Showcase was featured at the Newmarket Home and Lifestyle Show at the end of March – with 3D printers, a telepresence robot, augmented reality, robotic lego and smart home

lighting systems, guests had an opportunity to meet local innovators and try out cool technologies. Besides being fun, the purpose of the showcase was to highlight the collaborative partnership between the Town, Southlake Hospital and local businesses through the Chamber of Commerce – working together to pursue opportunities and joint projects to advance innovation in our community. Locally, entrepreneur Nicky Middleton, CEO of Brainspace Magazine, launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise funds for her business. One of the first Newmarket Chamber member companies to tap into the Crowdfunding movement, Nicky is at the forefront of a new wave of start-ups that are bypassing traditional financing mechanisms. (Check out her campaign on kickstarter.com, and search for Brainspace). While Crowdfunding on a donations and pre-sales basis has been available for several years, the Ontario Securities Commission recently released their proposed guidelines for allowing crowdfunding for raising equity, allowing entrepreneurs to raise up to $1.5 million during a 12 month period, without the expense of an initial public offering. This is a much-needed monumental shift that should spur a great deal of entrepreneurial activity in our province. InnovationBoothBanner20140318final.pdf 1 3/20/2014 10:55:30 AM

The most amazing aspect of innovation is that it is touching all organizations and individuals of all ages, enabling a local 16 year old to start up a successful company teaching robotic lego design to kids. It is changing our culture, enabling shifts in consumer patterns and realizing collective goals such as becoming a zerofootprint community. In our community, we have many people with great ideas, the ability to collaborate, and the willingness to work together to build a bright future for all. Our Chamber will continue to broker partnerships and explore opportunities around the Innovation agenda. May 2014
