For Your Information Canadian Chamber of Commerce AGM Debra Scott (President & CEO) and Rob Chaggarres (Board Chair - pictured at left) along with more than 300 representatives of chambers of commerce and boards of trade from all across the country attended the recent Canadian Chamber of Commerce AGM in Charlottetown PEI. Delegates set the advocacy agenda for the upcoming year. In particular, members agreed that the removal of internal trade barriers within Canada and the development of our natural resources are key to our nation’s competitiveness. Along with presentations from association expert, Harrison Coerver, the AGM featured a keynote address by the Hon. Jason Kenney, Minister of Employment and Social Development. Minister Kenney discussed the government’s efforts to ensure Canadians have the skills needed in today’s workforce and to fix the paradox of “too many Canadians without jobs in an economy of too many jobs without Canadians”. Debra Scott also ended her term on the board of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce and became Past President of the Chamber Executives of Canada.

Newmarket Business Excellence Awards
“The awards celebrated excellence, innovation and the spirit of entrepreneurship in business” Chamber President & CEO Debra Scott said. “The winners provide an ongoing source of pride and inspiration”. To mark the 25th year of the awards, the Chamber launched a video tribute to Newmarket. The “I Love Newmarket” video was a light and fun celebration of community landmarks, associations, charities, schools, recreation and businesses. The video, available on YouTube, as of this printing has received over 31000 views since its launch. A link to the video can be found on the Chamber homepage – newmarketchamber.ca
To continue the celebration, the event this year included an after-party with dessert stations, a DJ and dancing. The excitement kicked off with a performance by RSDivas a Vegas-style dance troupe. Nine winners were announced at the Gala. Congratulations go out to all of the finalists and winners of the 2014 Business Excellence Awards. Thank you to Ian Proudfoot, Metroland Central Vice President and Regional Publisher who was Master of Ceremonies, to our sponsors, and to all who attended the event.
