Celebrating Women Entrepreneurs Join us Thursday, October 23, 2014 9:00am – 11:00am Newmarket Public Library The decision to become an entrepreneur is a risky endeavour. Navigating the rapidly changing marketplace can be overwhelming for anyone who manages a business. An entrepreneur not only manages a business but does so accepting considerable risk. According to Stats Canada, more and more women are taking the leap into entrepreneurship; approximately 47% in fact, an increase of 23% in the last 10 years. So understanding the challenges, risks and, ultimately, the rewards of entrepreneurship can go a long way in helping entrepreneurs succeed. We’ve assembled a group of women entrepreneurs that represent all stages of entrepreneurship – from start up to exit to share their experience – from taking that first brave step, to the ongoing managing and operating of a business, to building a thriving business and preparing to exit the business. Our panelists will share the lessons they’ve learned, the ups and downs along the way and their inspiration for entrepreneurs and those considering entrepreneurship.

Our Panelists Nicky Middleton Founder & Publisher, Brainspace Publishing Inc. Focus - Perspectives From a Start-Up In April 2013, Nicky Middleton launched Brainspace Magazine - the first magazine in Canada to use augmented reality throughout its editorial content. As an innovator in the print industry, she has recently partnered with The Toronto Star as a consultant and to pair their publications for greater value in integrated sales to schools. “Publishing is as creative as it gets. It’s an industry that’s changing rapidly which means any traditional thinking and prior notions need to be scrapped. We’re setting new parameters.”

Beth Stevenson Founder, Brain Power Studio Focus - Challenges & Rewards of Entrepreneurship Beth Stevenson, Founder of Brain Power Studio, is an Executive Producer specializing in Children’s and Family entertainment. Brain Power Studio produces and distributes both live action and animation. Beth has served as Producer and Executive Producer on over 35 series and 4 movies, many of which were international co-productions. Development is her first love and she likes playing in projects where new technology lifts artistic heights. Recent credits: Julius Jr. (Saban Brands / Nick Jr), Fuzzy Tales (Disney Jr / CBC), Monkey in the Middle (Marvista Entertainment), My Dad is Scrooge (Marvista Entertainment), Gastroblast (TVO). Ingrid Kulbach Former Owner, fraktals ‘Spectacular Chocolate Cashew Buttercrunch’ Focus - Views on Entrepreneurship from Growing, Building and Selling your Business Ingrid Kulbach is the creative inspiration behind the delicious fraktals ‘Spectacular Chocolate Cashew Buttercrunch’ treat. Ingrid’s strong spirit of adventure took her from Bay Street finance to overseas work and travel. Upon her return, she went on to discover her entrepreneurial spirit and drive, and started to produce a combination of chocolate - cashews - buttercrunch - known as fraktals! This successful business is now based in Aurora. It can be found in fine food shops and gift shops throughout southern Ontario.

Following the three presentations, we will open up the floor to a panel discussion with the speakers, moderated by Newmarket Chamber of Commerce President & CEO, Debra Scott.

Innovation Updates Innovation - It’s In Newmarket’s DNA Everyone is familiar with the history of the trading tree in the formation of our Town, but less well known is the rich history of technology adoption and innovation right here in Newmarket. For example, one of the first prototype cable networks was developed by the Rogers Family here. In 1983, the Bank of Montreal on Main Street was one of the first branches in Canada to host an automated teller machine. More than ten years ago, Newmarket was at the forefront of exploring Smart Communities, developing a vision for SMART Newmarket. Some of that was later implemented in Stonehaven, and recent work with the successful Shared Digital Initiative project, CreateIT Now Innovation Centre and the community-driven Gigabit Corridor project, builds on the foundations laid by SMART Newmarket. This is an exciting time of significant changes around the world – largely driven by how people are using the incredible power of new technologies to re-shape and improve business, education, government and our society. It’s important to recognize that Newmarket

has innovation as part of its culture, based on a strong and vibrant history of leading the adoption of new technologies. We need strong business voices supporting an ongoing culture of positive innovation in our community – stay engaged with all the developments through the Chamber!

Gigabit Corridor Strategy Adopted by Council Last May, business and community leaders participated in three days of discussions and consultations with experts from the US, about the potential for Newmarket to develop a Gigabit Corridor to support economic growth, and to attract investments in the community. Large and small businesses, representing a significant employment base within the Town, lent their voice, vision and support in putting together a collective strategy for taking Newmarket into the future. The results and recommendations were captured in a final report whcih was presented to Council on August 29th. The report was adopted by a majority of Council, and the initiative now moves forward to the next phase.
