FROM DEBRA'S DESK

SMALL BUSINESS, TOO

Across communities all around Canada, small businesses make a huge difference. In Ontario, three million people rely on these companies for employment. In Newmarket, we can thank small businesses for helping to create a place we all love to call home. These businesses help drive the economic engine and shape our community. Their storefronts give our Town its unique personality, while the services they provide add convenience and ease to our lives.

BIG TO IGNORE

But the picture isn’t quite so rosy for business owners who face a number of challenges that impact the ability to thrive and grow, including the rising cost of doing business, lack of access to qualified workers and infrastructure gaps. The issues aren’t going away and that’s prompted the Ontario Chamber of Commerce and the Chamber network to launch the Small Business: Too Big To Ignore campaign. The initiative has been created to raise awareness, identify solutions and highlight the important contributions that small businesses make. Here in Newmarket, the Chamber has undertaken a number of efforts, including holding a roundtable for small business owners in July which explored some of the barriers as well as ways to ease the issues. This past spring,

the Chamber also teamed up with the Aurora Chamber of Commerce and the Ajax-Pickering Board of Trade to put forth a policy resolution on broadband which has been adopted by the Ontario Chamber of Commerce. (Learn more about the importance of ultra-highspeed Internet as well as some of the issues ailing business beginning on page 17.) We hope that you’ll join us in supporting this campaign. Along with the info in this issue of Your Business, you can also visit newmarketchamber.ca/smallbusiness. Please help us spread the message about the importance of small business and why it cannot be ignored.

BEHIND THE SCENES

GET TO KNOW THE NEWMARKET CHAMBER

In this new section, we'll introduce you to some of the people working behind the scenes to support our member businesses.

BOARD PIERRE BONHOMME, Secretary/Treasurer Q. What’s your day job? A. I am a CPA, CA and partner with Chaggares & Bonhomme, Chartered Professional Accountants. I regularly advise clients of all sizes on a variety of matters that arise and help guide them to make the most informed decision based on available information. Q. How are you involved with the Chamber? A. I have recently been appointed the Treasurer of the Chamber. However, before this new role, I was serving on the finance committee. I am also on the Business Excellence Awards committee and was the past Chair of the golf tournament. Q. What do you like best about Newmarket? A. I like the small town feel that it retains while keeping a close proximity to Toronto. Being originally from Timmins, I appreciate the closeness of the community while having easy access to various cultural events in the city and the amenities that are offered both in Newmarket and surrounding areas. I also think that Newmarket is a great place to raise my children with the numerous programs offered. What’s your favourite quote or motto? Use good sense, because common sense (however common), doesn’t always mean it’s good! 6

RAMZI KARIM Chair of the Business Excellence Awards Committee

Q. What are your main responsibilities at the Chamber? A. I work with Rosanne, the Events Manager, to help plan, prepare and carry out the numerous events that are hosted by the Newmarket Chamber. I also help to maintain registrations in our database and interact with Chamber members. Q. What’s your favourite part of the job? A. I enjoy getting to know our members and learning about how our events can benefit them, as well as getting involved in the technical aspects of event management. Q. What do you love doing outside of work? A. I enjoy being active. I can usually be found rock climbing, running or cycling. Alternatively, there’s nothing better than watching a good movie. Q. Name one thing on your bucket list. A. Top of my list would be to rappel out of a military Blackhawk helicopter!

Q. What’s your day job? A. I’m the General Manager of Staples Newmarket. Q. Tell us one thing that most people don’t know about you. A. In 2009, I climbed Mount Kilimanjaro, the world’s highest free-standing mountain. Q. Name one thing on your bucket list. A. To write a second book! My first is called How to Master the Art of Interviewing: All You Need to Know to Increase Your Hire Power.

Q. What’s your favourite quote or motto? A. “The road to excellence is always under construction.”

LEARN

FOCUS BOOSTERS The noise, the interruptions, the constant multi-tasking… sometimes getting any work done is, well, work. Here are a few strategies that may help: Disrupt distractions. Add some white noise via a fan, play some background music (the kind you don’t want to hum along to) or pop on a set of noise-cancelling headphones to muffle unwanted sounds. Zen out. Learn to clear the clutter of a busy mind. Not a meditator? There are

a slew of apps that can help, including Headspace. Available online or via mobile app (iOS, Android), Headspace teaches users to meditate through daily 10-minute sessions. The first 10 sessions are free. Time it. The Pomodoro technique is a time management system where specific work periods (typically lasting 25 minutes) are interspersed with short breaks. While there are plenty of Pomodoro-like apps out there, a low-tech approach using a timer works just as well.

TRY THIS! Want to get the ideas flowing at your team’s next brainstorming session? Start with a quick mental exercise. Set a timer for 60 seconds and ask participants to think up and write down as many uses as they can for an everyday item. Hint: Paper clips, soup cans and bricks are all great choices.

DRIVE ALONE? NOT IF SHE CAN HELP IT

Y

ork Region District School Board employee, Branislava travels to work many different ways, but driving alone is not one of them.

HONOURING BUSINESS

EXCELLENCE The Newmarket Chamber of Commerce Business Excellence Awards recognize local companies whose business achievements or community involvement have made significant contributions to the economic and social well-being of the Town of Newmarket. Congratulations to the 2016 finalists (listed below). Winners will be announced at the awards gala on Thursday, October 13, 2016.

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT WAYS YOU COMMUTE? My husband and I carpool on most days. It gives us a chance to enjoy each other’s company. In spring, summer and fall I bring my bike along in the morning when we carpool and pedal home at the end of the day. If our schedules don’t allow for carpooling, I take public transit and enjoy some “me” time. Commuting sustainably is good for my physical and mental health, saves me money and it helps the environment.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE CHALLENGES YOU FACE? Carpooling sometimes requires flexibility because it is an interdependent arrangement, but it’s worth it; we spend half the amount on gas and it’s less wear and tear on one of our cars. When I bike, unpredictable weather can be an issue, but it’s very easy to mount my bike on the bus if it rains. Also, some roads make me feel unsafe, so I plan my route to avoid those with no shoulder or bike lanes as much as possible. Sometimes public transit is delayed, but this is no different than encountering a traffic jam when driving.

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE THAT WOULD INSPIRE OTHERS TO GIVE UP DRIVING ALONE? Biking, for even part of your commute, gives you exercise and will save you the cost of a gym membership. Try taking public transit and your commute time becomes your own. Try it; you’ll love it. Just give it a chance.

I was hesitant about trying public transit, but one day I took the plunge when my husband was running late. It was great and now I even have a PRESTO card. Want more ideas for your own commute? MARKETING: 3 Strategies There are as many marketing strategies as there are budgets. And while not every approach works for every type of business, there’s much to be gained from taking a look around you and seeing what others are doing. We did just that. Here, a few ideas to consider.

Jarrah also sometimes uses customized Tim Hortons cards as part of follow ups and in thank you cards. He’s also given some away to charities and done small giveaways on Facebook. “We want our business to always be in people’s minds and we want our information to be accessible.” The cards, he says, do both. And the learning, he says, often goes both ways. “Each time I share something, I have an opportunity to learn something new from someone else based on their feedback.” Along with workshops and seminars, social media is another great way to share info and engage potential customers. GET INVOLVED IN YOUR COMMUNITY While marketing shouldn’t be the sole reason you get involved in the community, there’s no doubt that doing so often has benefits for businesses. It’s a great fit for Jarrah who is involved with a number of local initiatives, including Awesome Foundation Newmarket. “I’m naturally a person who loves to give back and be part of the community,” he says. Along with doing your part to create a better place for everyone, giving to your community—through your time, sponsorship and/or donations, is a great way for people in your area to get to know more about you.

his issue of Your Business magazine could not have come at a better time. In early June, MoneySense—Canada’s leading personal finance magazine and website—published its annual list of the best places to live in Canada. Not surprisingly, Newmarket took a prominent spot on the list of the 219 communities that were evaluated in 2016, coming in at number 24. Every year, MoneySense ranks more than 200 cities and towns across the country based on a number of measurable categories to get a detailed picture of what life is like in each community. This time around, some of the categories include population growth, estimated unemployment, household income, housing, transit, taxes, crime, doctors, health-care professionals, amenities as well as culture. Along with being ranked overall, cities were also given a ranking against their peers in three categories: Small (population below 100,000), mid-size (population of 100,001 to 400,000) and large cities

SMALL BUSINESS:

TOO BIG TO IGNORE

Photo Courtesy of The Town of Newmarket.

COVER STORY

A LO O K AT SO M E O F TH E ISSU E S HAT’S AILING SMALL BUSINESS? Plenty, it turns out. From the rising costs of doing business to lack of access to talent, small businesses across the country are shouldering increasingly heavy burdens. And yet, small businesses—those with fewer than 100 employees—are hugely important to our economy and communities such as Newmarket. That’s why the Newmarket Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with the Ontario Chamber of Commerce (OCC) and the Ontario Chamber Network is proud to be a part of the ambitious campaign, Small Business: Too Big To Ignore. Across the province, the initiative is helping to highlight the significant contributions of small businesses, while seeking input and feedback on some of the biggest barriers to small business growth and identifying solutions to overcome those challenges. The OCC has released Top 3 Obstacles to Small Business Success, a report that identifies a number of underlying challenges that are weighing on small businesses and stifling job creation. We’ve excerpted parts of it here.

A LACK OF ACCESS TO THE WORKERS WE NEED Too many employers are unable to find workers to fill jobs. In fact, 39 percent of employers have had difficulty filling a job opening over the past year and a half (an increase of 11 percentage points since 2014), because they could not find someone with the right qualifications.* This gap is felt most strongly in sectors like manufacturing, transportation/infrastructure, and health care and is hurting these businesses’ ability to grow. COVER STORY public policies are contributing to the skills gap. Ontario’s skills gap is exacerbated by the province’s disproportionately high journeyperson-to-apprentice ratios.* While the recent recommendations of the Dean Review regarding the Ontario College of Trades are encouraging, more work remains. High ratios are forcing many employers to lay off apprentices and leave apprenticeship positions vacant, since they cannot afford to hire additional journeypersons. KEY INFRASTRUCTURE GAPS Ontario’s estimated $60 billion infrastructure funding gap is delaying economic recovery in all parts of the province. Approximately half of the infrastructure gap is accounted for by

road and bridge assets, the repair of which is costly for rural and northern communities in particular.* Insufficient infrastructure congests our roads, creates delays, and impacts quality of life – addressing the infrastructure gap is a top priority for small businesses. Inadequate access to high-speed, broadband internet is compromising the ability of communities across Ontario to attract and retain businesses. Broadband is internet service that is always on (as opposed to dial-up, where a connection must be made each time) and offers higher speeds than dial-up service. Canada ranks 33rd in the world when it comes to available speed, and its broadband shortcomings are weighing on the ability of suburban and rural small businesses to compete.* THE RISING COST OF DOING BUSINESS Since 2004, electricity prices in Ontario have grown from a flat rate of 4.7 cents a kilowatt hour, to the 18 cents a kwh at peak times.* That is an increase of 383 percent. OCC survey results show that one in twenty businesses in

In addition, 38 percent will see their bottom line shrink, with the cost of electricity delaying or canceling investment in the years to come.* The new cap and trade system, while laudable in its aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, will impose new costs on consumers and businesses. The system is expected to raise the costs of gasoline prices by 4.3 cents a litre and increase home heating costs by $5 a month.* *Works Cited can be found in the full report Top 3 Obstacles to Small Business Success. BROADBAND-IMPORTANT FOR NEWMARKET BUSINESS

Currently, York Region, along with Peel, Halton, Durham and other areas, falls short of the speeds primarily available in large urban centres such as Toronto. To help level the competitive playing field across the province, the Newmarket and Aurora Chambers of Commerce and the Ajax-Pickering Board of Trade put forth a policy resolution on broadband which has been adopted by the Ontario Chamber of Commerce. Visit newmarketchamber.ca/policy to read the final policy resolution. Ultra-high-speed Internet is a crucial success factor for cities to attract and retain businesses. Over the past two decades, broadband has become key infrastructure for economic development. It has become as important as roads, highways, railways and airports. Broadband will play an increasingly critical role in all of the following transactions: E-service: delivery of services and information over the Internet E-democracy: citizen participation and engagement in decision making E-commerce: the ability to pay fees etc. and improve procurement services E-management: technology to improve internal business processes.

WORDS OF WISDOM What’s the best business advice you ever received? We asked, you answered!

W

hether it came from a magazine, a mentor or a trusted friend, some advice just has more staying power than others. That top-of-mind timeless wisdom was what we were looking for when we asked a group of business pros for the best advice they ever received. Here’s what they had to say. WATCH WHAT YOU SAY “‘If you can’t change your story, change your story’; a powerful message I learned from Tony Robbins at a fire walk in New York in 2002 that has changed the way I approach my life and my business. Our self-talk is either hugely motivating or damaging. Are you going to be a victim or a champion? The things you tell yourself, people you surround yourself with, books you read and choices you make lead you in one direction or the other. Decide to decide. It starts today!” -Jennifer Clements, Realtor, RE/MAX Realtron Realty Inc.

BE OPEN TO CHANGE “I have had some great advice on personal development, especially on goal setting and time management, but the best ‘business’ advice came from my father-in-law who encouraged me to take a look at the investment industry as a career; 24 years later I have a great Wealth Management Practice.” -Ted Kurello, Portfolio Manager, HollisWealth

HIRE PEOPLE SMARTER THAN YOU “I’ve been blessed with working with and for exceptional leaders and business-builders. One great piece of advice was from a former boss who grew several profitable businesses by focusing on his people. He told me, ‘Always

hire people who have strengths where you don’t, or who are smarter than you. Listen to them, then make your own decisions. Hiring people who are just like you is a dangerous game that has a very low chance of long-term success.’” -Lara Veltkamp, Chief Engagement Officer & the “Small Business Therapist”,Watershed Marketing Group Inc.
