FROM DEBRA'S DESK

ADVOCACY:

YOUR VOICE IN ACTION From Parliament Hill to Queen’s Park to the Town offices, decisions made at all levels of government can directly impact your business. What isn’t always so clear is how. Whether we’re talking local bylaw changes or a federal tax hike, without a solid background in a particular issue (or a working crystal ball) trying to figure out what it means for your business is often complicated and confusing. As important as it is, navigating advocacy issues takes effort and time, and many business owners just don’t have the resources necessary. Over the years, advocacy has become a big part of what chambers do on behalf of their memberships. So how does it work? Though it differs depending on the chamber, at the Newmarket Chamber we advocate at all levels of government. Locally, we work directly with

both the Town of Newmarket and the Regional Municipality of York. At the provincial and federal levels, we coordinate our efforts with the Ontario Chamber of Commerce (OCC) and Canadian Chamber of Commerce respectively. Both the OCC and Canadian Chamber are made up of chambers like ours to form the chamber network. At the national level, the chamber network represents approximately 200,000 businesses and is the largest and most influential business association in Canada. From helping to mitigate the rising cost of doing business to policy research on taxation or regulation issues, the chamber network strives to create an environment that enables businesses like yours to grow and thrive. Strong businesses help create strong communities, and there’s no doubt advocacy has

a role to play. That’s why we’re thrilled to say the Newmarket Chamber is strengthening its efforts. This fall, we welcomed a Government Relations and Policy Manager. Abdus Samad will play a significant role in leading the Chamber’s public policy research and the development of initiatives to further the interests of our members. Look for regular advocacy updates via our website and monthly e-letters. Got a question or comment? Please feel free to connect with me via email. I can be reached at debra@newmarketchamber.ca.

Debra Scott President and CEO

Our policy resolution “Bridge the Broadband Gap” was adopted at the Canadian Chamber of Commerce annual general meeting in September. Co-developed with the Ajax-Pickering Board of Trade, the resolution focuses on the importance of ultra-high-speed Internet as a crucial success factor for cities to attract and retain business.

DASHING THROUGH THE SNOW…ON A BIKE!

D

o you hibernate in the winter? You’re not alone. Cold days and less daylight can trigger a drop in our mood, overindulgence in comfort food and a decrease in exercise. Cycling to work through the winter months can be an easy way to fit the recommended 30 minutes of physical activity into your daily routine. Follow these winter cycling tips for a happy and healthy winter. Older can be better

Sand and salt can wreak havoc on gears and other moving parts. Choose an older bike for winter riding and consider one with fewer gears. Slap on some fenders and winter tires and you’re good to go! Layer up

There is a fine line between warm and dry versus sweaty and clammy. Cycle-specific clothing can be expensive and you likely already have what you need. Choose thin, lightweight and waterproof layers according to the length of your commute. Waterproof gloves and boots are a must. Cover your head and ears to prevent heat loss.

white light on the front of your bike along with a red rear reflector or light, 30 minutes before sunset to half an hour after sunrise. Wear bright and reflective clothing. Keep your bike cold

Drying off your bike and storing it in a cold, dry place can reduce condensation and rust. Be sure to lubricate moving parts regularly. If the weather outside is frightful, don’t ride that day, but remember many municipalities ensure that roads and trails are well- lit and cleared year-round. In addition, all buses have bike racks so you have a backup plan if the weather gets crazy.

Stay safe and be visible

s“I find riding to work a great way to fit some exercise into an otherwise busy lifestyle. The exercise helps me to feel more relaxed, both at work and home. Winter riding helps me overcome some of the winter blues too.” Dr. Daniel Kim, Southlake Regional Health Centre physician.

WORDS OF Wisdom

How do you max your 24 hours? Productivity tips: we asked, you answered!

T

hese days, we’re all looking for a little extra edge to make the most of our days. We turned to a group of business pros for some of their favourite tips. Here’s what they had to say:

PLAN FOR SUCCESS

AVOID A TIME SUCK

“Block times for specific activities, and stick with the plan. Turn your calendar into appointment blocks, and put activities into those blocks. If you want free time, plan it. Keeping yourself organized and on-task is the real key to small business success.” -Deborah Arsenault, Manager, Self-Employment Pathways for Newcomers, Job Skills

Being in the SMS business, I’m on my mobile a lot. My tip: Change your phone from a distraction into a productivity helper by downloading apps that make you more efficient. (If you think you need it, there is likely an app for it!) Next, schedule in looking at your phone every 30, 60 or 90 minutes instead of every few minutes. -Rick O’Connor, President, SMSnet.ca, the Text Messaging Company

BE ACCOUNTABLE “I have an accountability partner to help me focus on a priority item for the week. I share the item with her on Monday and we touch base on Friday to assess status and any learnings. This level of accountability helps me get the task completed most times because someone else is waiting for my response, and the benefits go both ways because I am helping her do the same.” -Shelly D. Cyr, Leadership Coach, Synfini Works

GET HELP “Entering the world of entrepreneurship has been exciting, very humbling and incredibly rewarding in so many ways. One of the greatest challenges I’ve faced is finding enough hours each day to accomplish everything I want to do in order to run a successful small business. My solution was to identify my strengths and leverage them by growing my business and letting the experts

handle the rest. For example, I use a virtual assistant for all my social media requirements (the terrific Nikki Bult from NB Virtual Office). Doing so has enabled me to focus on serving my clients and growing my business with a lot less worry!” -Michael Brown, Owner, Silver Fox Concierge Ltd

DEAL WITH IT Although, we would like to think we’re becoming paperless, it’s ridiculous the amount of flyers and junk mail we all receive. Instead of cluttering your home with all of it, place a recycle container near the door. As soon as you get in the door, quickly scan the pile and recycle what you don’t want to keep. Come recycling day you’ll already have it by the door and won’t have to spend valuable time going through your space collecting them. -Kathy Russell, Certified Concierge and Organizer, butlergirl.com

JOE

D’ADDARIO 2016 RECIPIENT OF ENTREPRENEUR OF THE YEAR Photo by Pedja Milosavljević. Courtesy of Nature’s Emporium.

A

ccepting his Entrepreneur of the Year award at the Business Excellence Awards in October, Joe D’Addario jokingly told the crowded room “entrepreneur” was a word he couldn’t say or spell. But even if true, he doesn’t need to—it’s a word he embodies. D’Addario is the President of Nature’s Emporium, a highly successful natural food store featuring organic and natural health foods, beauty and green living products, vitamins, supplements and more. Established in 1993, the company opened a second location in Vaughan in January 2014. A third location in Burlington is scheduled to open in early 2017. He attributes much of his success to growing up around business and watching his brother, Guy, and late father Angelo, build a flourishing health and bulk foods store in Ajax. It was destroyed in a fire just shy of its 20th anniversary. Though devastating, D’Addario says Nature’s Emporium rose from its ashes. On the heels of his win, D’Addario took time to speak to the Newmarket Chamber about lessons learned, his strengths as a leader and the importance of team.

&A

Q

Q. What are your greatest strengths as an entrepreneur? A. I like to believe empathy is my biggest strength. I’ve always believed in treating other others as I would like to be treated. I honestly believe that caring for our employees, customers and suppliers has contributed to the success of Nature’s Emporium. Q. If you could, what lessons would you share with your 20-year-old self? A. To be more patient. Success is not something that happens overnight. To enjoy the journey because that is the fun part. Q. In your acceptance speech, you spoke about the Nature’s Emporium team being just as valuable as its customers. For those

who weren’t at the Awards, can you talk a little bit about that? A. My job as President is to ensure that our employees are happy, passionate and secure. It’s important that they feel satisfied with their careers. I believe that the customers can sense the energy of our staff when they walk in the store and it’s that positive energy that customers seek. Q. What is the most productive part of your day and why? A. My most productive parts of my day are first thing in the morning and late in the evening. Mornings allow me to plan my day ahead and evenings are usually a time of reflection to explore where I can improve. Q. When it comes to work, what excites you the most? A. What excites me each and every day are the employees of Nature’s Emporium. It is humbling to know that 280 people depend on NE for their livelihoods and for me to be a part of that is a blessing and an honour.

1 HE CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT… “Organic coffee!”

2 HIS FAVORITE PIECE OF TECHNOLOGY… “My Samsung Note 5”

3 HIS GO-TO BOOK… The Science of Getting Rich by Wallace D. Wattles. If anyone aspires to be an entrepreneur, this book should be his or her Bible.”

SCAM Alert DON’T GET SPEARED

ost of us have had some exposure to email scams over the years. Maybe it was the one from Nigerian royalty or perhaps the “friend” stuck overseas looking for an influx of cash. These days, there’s a new and even scarier con going on. It’s called spear phishing and it’s a targeted email attack aimed at both businesses and individuals.

We posed a few questions about spear phishing—what it is and how to avoid being a victim—to Bob Kyriakides, founder of Digital Hero. Here’s what he had to say. Q. What are criminals hoping to get from you? A. Unlike a phishing email which is indiscriminate, a spear phishing email is personalized and highly targeted. For example, attackers will research an organization, its staff, their online presence, emails, etc., to learn as much as possible about their target. This allows the attacker to draft as convincing an email as possible to fool the intended victim into opening it and clicking on the links or attachments it contains. The attackers are typically interested in two things: (1) stealing financial and/or personal information for use in identity theft or for their resale value; and (2) tricking you into clicking on links or attachments that will install malicious software in your computer. That software

will compromise your computer and potentially spread the infection across your network allowing more data to be extracted from you and/or your organization as a whole. Q. What are some of the hallmarks of spear phishing? A. Spear phishing emails will appear to come from someone you know and or trust. They could come from a “friend” or a business such as your dentist’s office asking you to schedule an appointment via a link. The person in the email will use your name and may even know details about you. Often, after an attack, the victim will say that there was something odd about the message, but they just couldn’t put their finger on it. That’s because while spear phishing emails have the right content, they are typically missing the flavour such as the author’s style of writing.

Q. Are there best practices to follow to help avoid a phishing attack? A. Attackers bank on people rushing through emails. Slow down and really read an email. By slowing down, you give your subconscious those extra few seconds to help you realize something is wrong with the style of an email. If you suspect an email doesn’t “sound” like one the sender would have sent, ask via phone or text (don’t email). To check if it’s a spear phishing attempt from a desktop or laptop computer: if using Windows, hover over the “from” and then the

For Mac users, click the downfacing “v” to the right of the “from” and then the “reply to” addresses to reveal their true addresses. On a mobile device (both Android and IOS), click and hold on the “from” and “reply to” addresses until the pop-up tool tip for each one appears. The pop-up tool tip displays the true email address hidden under the one we can see when we open the email. If either visible email address fails to match up with its revealed counterpart, you have a spear phishing email. (An important caveat: Although the pop-up tool-tip technique works the majority of times, this method isn’t foolproof. That’s because spammers have been using email “ghosting” or “spoofing” for years to make fake emails look like they come from legitimate addresses— even yours. If you have any doubt about the legitimacy of an email, always err on the side of caution and pick up the phone and check

with the sender.) Do not open any links or attachments contained in the email. Tell your IT department, your colleagues (so they can be vigilant, too), and contact the authorities if it’s an attempt to steal financial data and finally, if advised, delete the email. If you do accidentally open any links or attachments, immediately turn your device off and disconnect it from the Internet. That device is compromised and by shutting it down you may prevent a network-wide infection. Your anti-virus will not help you because the malware used in spear phishing attacks is often designed with countermeasures to most if not all anti-virus software. Spear phishing emails are drafted to penetrate firewalls (masked as legit emails from legit addresses), bypass anti-virus software and make their way to their intended targets. That places the onus to prevent spear phishing attacks squarely on each user. Each of us becomes the last line of defence.

Information— PASS IT ON! In addition to ensuring you have strong IT security and measures in place, it’s critical for team members to understand the important role they each play. Make cyber security a priority and be vigilant about ongoing team education and awareness. For example, train employees to use caution when on the Internet, and how to recognize and avoid phishing attempts.

The founder of digitalhero.ca, Bob Kyriakides’ expertise includes disaster recovery, data privacy and security, and heroic data rescue. To learn more about spear phishing, join Bob at our free January Tech Triage clinic (turn to page 5 for more info).

BEST WESTERN VOYAGEUR PLACE HOTEL only motel in Newmarket in the 1950s, it has “ The grown to become the number one hotel in town. ”

I

t was a cold November night in 1973 when Irena and Henryk Dabrowski along with their two teenage children, Marek and Wanda, arrived at Bell’s Corner Motel in Newmarket. It wasn’t the typical short-term stay. The family were refugees from Poland, and Bell’s Corner Motel was to turn into their home and workplace for many years to come. The first steps were not easy. Henryk, with his MA in Socialist Economy and Irena, a dentist, had no idea about the motel business. They learned fast and worked hard, running the front desk and telephone switchboard, and helping with cleaning rooms and laundry and operating the breakfast room. Twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, twelve months a year, for several years. The commitment, perseverance and determination eventually paid off. In 1979, Irena and Henryk managed to buy the business. Though they finally felt a sense of stability, the following years brought new challenges. Times had changed, and the small “Ma and Pa” operations were becoming obsolete. Marek, a Chartered Accountant by then, realized it soon enough and presented his

parents with a plan to expand. Reluctantly, since the risk was significant, they approved. As part of the expansion, the business was taken over by Marek and his wife, Monika, a childhood sweetheart from Poland, whom he had married a few years earlier. The expansion started in 1987 and was a huge business endeavor with many challenges, including multiple labour strikes. The bankruptcy of a major sub-contractor forced Marek to take over the role. In the summer of 1988, the new hotel-commercial complex was successfully completed. As part of that, Bell’s Corner Motel was renamed Voyageur Place Hotel. Its doors opened with sixty new rooms, five meeting rooms, some lease space and the now iconic “Buttery Restaurant” all ready to receive guests. The Toronto Maple Leafs Hockey Team and Newmarket Saints were the first clients. In 1992, the hotel joined the Best Western family. The move enabled the business to survive the major upheavals that took place in the hotel market during the early ’90s and the recession of 2008. The brand has certainly helped the hotel to place first in the TripAdvisor ranking of Newmarket hotels over the last few years.

In 2015, Best Western VPH commenced a major upgrade program. The hotel now offers a state-of-the-art Wi-Fi system with free and fast internet. The lobby has been expanded and modernized and most rooms are renovated. All are furnished with Simmons Beautyrest® Pillow Top mattresses and are equipped with 37” or 42” HD, LCD TVs. During their stay, guests enjoy complimentary use of pools at the Magna Centre, Ray Twinney Recreation Complex and get free access to GoodLife Fitness and Master Fitness Complex. The Dabrowski’s Best Western has been an important part of the Newmarket landscape for many years. The only motel in Newmarket in the 1950s, it has grown to become the number one hotel in town. It supports various charities, local sports groups and is a proud member of Newmarket Chamber of Commerce. Its recipe for success? Smart decisions, hard work, excellent employees, some luck and the owners’ motto: “Always strive to exceed the expectations of your guests”.

hree generations have played a role in the success of Zona’s II Children’s Shoes. The original owner, Zona Metcalfe, established the company back in 1981, joining the Newmarket Chamber that same year. In 1996, her daughter, Karen Barker, assumed ownership with the same commitment to providing exceptional customer service as her mother. Karen’s son, Michael Barker, joined the business in 2003 and has been running Zona’s full-time since 2013. There have been exciting changes since the company first opened its doors 35 years ago, including the addition of a location in Barrie. Along with a wide range of children’s shoes, the company has also expanded its offerings to include casual and athletic adult shoes as well as special needs footwear.
