Seniors find friends for holidays TIM KELLY tkelly@yrmg.com It is supposed to be the most wonderful time of the year, but for some seniors Christmas can be lonely and a bleak period on the calendar.

While younger people in the community are surrounded by friends and family able to travel and visit with loved ones, some seniors, either through loss or by circumstance, find themselves alone and sometimes far from family members.

That is why Newmarket’s the Grandparent Connection, Nobleton’s Lions Club annual Christmas Dinner for Seniors and the region’s Home Instead Senior Care, in their

own way, try to help isolated seniors feel better at this time of year.

Valiera Luttrell, who established community group the Grandparent Connection with her 93-year-old mother three years ago, has always had an "affinity for working with seniors."

She said she and her mom saw a need to bring smiles to seniors and to connect community groups like Beavers and Scouts, as well as elementary school students, with seniors who don’t get out or receive much company.

"We don’t host functions. We collect greeting cards and stuff stockings and distribute them to seniors, either in their homes or in longterm care facilities," said Luttrell.

She said she has connected with

all the long-term care homes in Newmarket and said there has also been interest in starting similar groups in Aurora and Keswick.

"But it takes time and it’s a lot of work," said Luttrell, who works full-time as an office administrator/bookkeeper and is also a caregiver for her mother. She said her husband also has an elderly mother so the family is kept busy.

"There has been an amazing reaction to the gifts we have put together for our seniors. It’s been a very good response.

"The primary students do artwork, pictures and cards for the seniors and it really brings out the smiles. They love it," said Luttrell, whose group also keeps up the good deeds throughout the year, not just

In Nobleton, the Lion’s Christmas dinner for seniors is an annual can’t miss event for many old-timers.

Paul Olsen of the Lions, who has been involved in the dinner for many years and at 72 is a senior himself enjoys taking part.

Olsen, who says he is a "senior serving seniors", said the dinner started out with the Lions delivering poinsettias 30 years ago and eventually evolved into the 150-160strong sit-down meal that takes place today.

Transportation group calls for toll roads in York Region LISA QUEEN lqueen@yrmg.com If you’re a commuter who thinks toll roads coming to Toronto are highway robbery, brace yourself.

While the issue doesn’t have the same traction as it does in Toronto where council agreed in December to pursue the idea, it is slowly percolating, mainly out of the public eye, in York Region.

"We’ve been working behind the scenes (to make it happen here)," said Markham resident Peter Miasek, past-president of

Transport Action Ontario, an organization advocating for railbased public transportation.

The organization supports tolls on highways 400 and 404, with revenues being earmarked for transit and transportation projects in the region.

The organization has talked about toll roads with regional transportation staff and some councillors, including Newmarket Coun. John Taylor and Richmond Hill Coun. Vito Spatafora, who chairs the region’s transportation committee, Miasek said.

Meanwhile, he pointed out the

region’s new transportation master plan supports pursuing the possibility of toll roads.

"Support and participate in a constructive dialogue on road pricing among governments, the business sector and general public across the GTHA (Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area) and support education, research and demonstration that are essential to effective, efficient and equitable road pricing in the long term," the plan said.

This will improve collaboration between provincial ministries and the way the province is investing in health care, she said.

The OCC’s report argues a Health Cabinet should also facilitate improved public/private relationships by including stakeholders from industry, research and academia. This would improve the quality of care patients receive and could focus on the challenges of the province’s aging population.

Newmarket area residents do not have the same level of access to health care innovations as people in many other areas of Canada, according to the town’s chamber of commerce.

"Innovation is not being materialized in Newmarket," Chamber of Commerce president and CEO Debra Scott said. "Across the country, there are over 4,000 new medical devices licensed each year and not enough of them are getting to Newmarket patients.

Government needs to reform how the importance of innovation is being evaluated so that the lowest cost option is not the default, because in doing so, we’re not putting patients first."

Scott was responding to a report from the Ontario Chamber of Commerce, Care in Our Control: Managing Innovation in Ontario’s Multi-Payer Health Care System.

The report takes a look at Ontario’s spending on health care innovations like pharmaceuticals and medical devices. It recommends a new approach to spending by calling on the provincial government

"It does a number of things. It boosts revenue, it will cut travel time for those people who want to pay, it does wean us off the car," he said, adding a program to help low-income commuters could be considered.

"I do think our automobiles, and I’m an auto driver like everyone else up here, is past its best before date with all the accidents and the health issues, climate change, congestion and all of that.

So, it’s a step in the right direction."

While Toronto is eyeing a $2 flat toll, Miasek said a fee by distance is fairer and would also help prevent drivers from bailing from the highway onto local roads just before tolls begin.

Ideally, the province would be leading the discussion but likely won’t embrace the political hot potato in advance of the 2018 election, Miasek said.

He acknowledged the issue is controversial.

"I may not want to run for most beloved citizen," he laughed, adding he’s surprised at the support he’s heard among his friends for toll roads as long as rates are reasonable and the revenues are used to improve transit and transportation infrastructure.

Spatafora, who agreed the region is looking at the concept of road pricing, said he has mixed feelings about toll roads.

Implementing tolls on highways 404 and 400 would be difficult because they are provincial highways but the region could consider them for future regional roads, specifically much-needed and expensive east-west streets needed to ease the region’s serious traffic congestion problems, Spatafora said.

Tolls are worth considering if the revenues are used for the construction of transit and transportation infrastructure, not to fund ongoing operating expenses, Spatafora said.

It’s also crucial they not be run like Highway 407, he said.

"I take a look at what’s happened with Highway 407 and it’s become a money-maker for foreign investors. It kind of defeats the purpose because a lot of people who’d want to use this eastwest connection avoid it because of the heavy cost," he said.

"If it’s a reasonable cost, in terms of the operating expense, then it’s one thing. But when it becomes a gouge, like it has been with the 407, that’s where I’m hesitant and have concerns."

Tolls shouldn’t be implemented until the region’s transit system is more developed, Spatafora said.

Tolls can cause drivers to migrate to surrounding non-toll roads, meaning traffic patterns are just shifted rather than alleviated, Elliott Silverstein, manager of government relations in the Canadian Automobile Association’s Thornhill office, said.

The CAA and Conference Board of Canada produced a report in 2010 which showed motorists in Ontario pay for 70 to 80 per cent of road infrastructure costs through fuel taxes and vehicle registration fees.

That jumps to "well over 100 per cent" in the GTHA, showing motorists already shoulder more than their fair share of transportation costs, Silverstein said.

On Jan. 1, drivers will begin paying 4.3 cents more in gas taxes as part of the carbon tax, putting more of a burden on motorists, he said.

Governments need to look at other options other than tolls to manage traffic congestion, Silverstein said.

Syrian families talk about their Canadian Christmas The Fandis and the Al Shteiwes have been involved in Christmas activities ALI RAZA aliraza@yrmg.com Seeing Christmas for the first time in Canada is quite the adjustment for Syrian families in York Region.

As the holidays approach, Syrians reflect on what for many of them is their first experience of celebrating Christmas in North America, among a majority Christian population.

The Fandi family in Stouffville arrived in Canada early this year from Jordan after fleeing their home in Daraa, Syria. They’ve adjusted to life here, constantly praising the hospitality and kindness they’ve received from their neighbours.

But when it comes to holiday celebrations, they remember their old traditions.

"Christmas is good," said Faisal, the father of the family. "But I don’t know much about it. We’re Syrians, we’re Muslims, so we’re just used to Eid and Mawlid an-Nabi."

Muslims across the world, including those from Syria, traditionally have three major holidays in the year.

Eid al-Fitr (Festival of Breaking the Fast), which is celebrated at the end of the fasting month of Ramadan. Eid al-Adha (Festival of Sacrifice) which commemorates Abraham’s sacrifice to God. And Mawlid an-Nabi (Birthday of the Prophet) which celebrates the birth anniversary of the Islamic Prophet Muhammad.

Islamic holidays follow the Islamic calendar, a lunar calendar that lags roughly 10 days behind the Gregorian calendar. As a result, each year holiday dates move backwards 10 days.

This year, one of the major holidays - Mawlid anNabi - landed on Sunday, Dec. 11, in and around the holiday season.

The Fandis celebrated as expected with family, friends and a feast. But that

doesn’t mean they’re not doing anything for Christmas. Their sponsor group Stouffville Cares - donated a Christmas tree, which they decorated and plan to surround with presents.

"I like the tree," Thaer said. "We don’t have Christmas trees in Syria."

On Christmas Day, the Fandis plan on spending time with friends and family, while their son Thaer, 12, plays hockey.

"I want a hockey stick, a red and black one, because of the Stouffville Spirit, with white tape," Thaer said when asked what he wanted for Christmas.

The Fandi children have been involved in Christmas activities in school, singing Christmas carols, baking cookies and having a Christmas pageant.

The children have their own "gift draw," said sponsor Jason Wilson.

"They’re very excited, we did a little draw, Thaer picked his siblings, they’re going to buy one gift for each other," he said. "There have also been letters to Santa."

The Fandis reflect on the stark difference they’ve noticed with Christmas celebrations in Canada versus Christmas celebrations in Syria and Jordan.

"In Jordan, our neighbours were Christian," Faisal said. "They just go to church and spend time with their family."

Santa Claus, however, does visit Christians in Jordan, they said.

Faisal noted that shopping was a much more emphasized aspect of Christmas in Canada, something he didn’t expect.

In Bradford, just north of York Region, another Syrian family is excited about Canadian Christmas traditions.

The Al Shteiwe family fled Homs, Syria, and arrived in Canada in January.

Ali and his wife Manjiye have 10 children, with their last son being born in Canada.

The snow has been a particular joy for the children as they’ve spent most of the season building snowmen.

"If it snows a lot and we don’t have to go to school, then we get to build a snowman and I love doing that," said Rachid, 8.

The Al Shteiwes had a smaller celebration of Christmas back in Syria, often with their Christian friends.

"We would gather with others and eat together, give gifts and celebrate the new year," said Mohammed, 18.

"But in Canada, everything is more beautiful. The streets look really nice and we like walking around instead of driving," he added.

The family has decorat-

ed their home with lights on the outside and crafts on the inside. They recently participated in Vaughan’s Santa Claus parade, riding in a float with a handmade Syrian flag, held beside the flag of their new home, Canada.

Christians in Syria make up 10 per cent of the

population, but the civil war has forced many to flee.

Regardless of religious beliefs, the conflict has uprooted many families. Muslim or Christian - the holidays are a time when families come together to celebrate, both the Fandis and the Al Shteiwes believe.

The effects of Prospect Street house fire that claimed a man’s life last week have rippled outwards, impacting those around him, as family and friends prepare to celebrate the life of the 56-year-old victim.

On Dec. 16, a GoFundMe account was created by Nicole Davey, who wrote about the devastating effects the fire, which killed Newmarket’s Richard Wilton on Dec. 15, had on her mother Luana Higgins.

Higgins was at work when she first heard the terrible news, receiving a call from her landlord to make sure she wasn’t home during the blaze.

"She rushed home to find firefighters fighting her burning home," Davey wrote. "She learned she had lost a dear friend and neighbour in the tragic fire.

She spent hours in anxiety and tears worrying for her beloved sidekick Tiktak the cat."

After the fire was under control, Davey continued, firefighters found Tiktak safe under the bed.

However this was far from the end of Higgins’ ordeal.

"My mom is dealing with a tremendous stresslevel, on top of losing her home, and belongings," she added. "She is also having hip replacement surgery next month, for both hips, everything is smoke damaged. I am asking anyone

for help."

Davey is requesting anyone interested in helping out, to donate linen, furniture and clothing.

"She has a long and stressful journey ahead, with help, faith, and lovefrom family, friends and the community," Davey noted. "I hope to help her get back on her feet as smoothly and fast as possible."

There will be a celebration of life for Wilton on Jan. 7 from 1 to 3 p.m. at Newmarket’s Roadhouse and Rose Funeral Home.

The fire marshal is continuing its investigation.

Don’t forget less fortunate this holiday season Well, the holidays are here again and that means it’s time to indulge in a little festive food, partake in some eggnog, perhaps, and maybe even keep a keen eye out for the arrival of Santa Claus and the array of presents many children, young and old, hope that he has with their names on them.

And while many of us count the days until this time of year rolls around again, for others in the community, the season is anything but holly jolly. Each and every year we hear the pleas from charities and other local nonprofit agencies about the need for both donations and volunteers to help make the season bright for the less fortunate among us.

It’s all too easy to get swept up in the annual excess and the seemingly never-ending to-do list each of us has, but, if we’re able, we should try and take even a moment out of our hectic schedules to do our part to help ensure that others can also have a reason to celebrate the holidays.

York Region is home to many charitable agencies from those that operate strictly at the local level to others whose scope spans all nine municipalities and beyond.

The fact of the matter is, poverty remains a massive issue in our society. Although a small gesture, donating a few non-perishable goods to the local food bank or making a small donation to a nonprofit organization may not seem to have that much of an impact, but if enough of us do it, it can make a big difference to others in our communities.

By all means, enjoy spending time with your friends and family over the course of this festive season; just don’t forget that not everyone has reason to feel joyful without some assistance. If we can all pitch in, even a little bit, maybe we can make sure another family has a merrier Christmas or a happier holiday and, with any luck, a more prosperous new year.

Think about it, 25% of Ontario property taxes go to educational funding.....it takes 2 $500k Toronto properties to match the educational tax amount paid by 1 $500k non Toronto property i.e. We, outside Toronto proper, are already paying 50% of Toronto’s school costs.

Raise Toronto taxes to the same standard as is used in the rest of the province.

My apologies, but if Granny in her $2.5 million Rosedale home cannot afford to pay the taxes then time to sell up and move to a Condo or a property she can afford, no pity party here.

Revamped Davis Drive an improvement Re: LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Town should have learned from Davis Drive project, Nov. 26.

Successful, astute business people understand that change is a blessing.

They learn very quickly to adapt to change.

Personally, I find the revamped Davis Drive is a vast improvement.

I prefer to take Davis Drive now to cross Newmarket instead of Green Lane or Mulock.

Davis Drive is now freeflowing regardless of the time of day.

As a bonus, it requires that drivers focus their attention on the road instead of the cellphone in their ears.

The middle lane bus routing provides shelters and safety islands for pedestrians, along with detailed maps, schedules and fare/pass machines.

For decades, Newmarket had let its utility infrastructure slide.

All public utilities (water, sewers, natural gas) communications and power routing desperately needed to be upgraded.

Those critical items have also been done as part of the upgrade.

Too bad they are out of sight to wanderers by. And access to Southlake is much easier ...

We are all feeling the pressures of the record growth of York Region.

Everyone had lots of notice, and lots of opportunity to plan their own adjustments before and during the Davis Drive upgrade.

Progress was continually updated in public forums and media. Those who ignored this did so at their own peril.

If their products/services are truly exceptional, their customers will find them . that is called competition in the marketplace.

Newmarket chose to do its mega-mall strip up Yonge Street.

A bypass route from the GO station up the west side of the strip to Green Lane had been discussed, but was ignored.

Now, Yonge Street congestion is paying for that oversight.

The Yonge Street upgrades are long overdue.

Relax and let it happen before things get worse.

Newmarket is the fork in the road - we have to handle traffic to Bradford and traffic to East Gwillumbury.

That is a plus for Newmarket businesses, if they know how to adapt to this.

Now, maybe they could shave two or three feet off the hill on Mulock just east of Leslie, and use that to raise the Leslie/Mulock in-

Thanks to our great community My daughter and her friends needed to video some "travel" scenes for a school assignment. Usually, this means driving around Aurora, King, Whitchurch-Stouffville, Newmarket and surrounding areas. I always enjoy taking these road trips, I call them adventures. Well, this trip was even more of an adventure than usual.

I had just finished telling them on St. John Sideroad that there wasn’t much of a shoulder to pull over onto and that it was more of a ditch so I couldn’t stop there, so they videoed from the window while I was driving. I continued to McCowan and made a right and realized that I should have gone left because it looked like it would be really nice footage of the roadway when I saw it in my mirror.

Well, don’t I pull over to the right thinking there would be enough of a shoulder to make a safe U-turn.

There wasn’t, and we ended up in a ditch!

So back and forth, back and forth, I try to get my little Jetta out of the ditch, all the time thinking I’ve got to get the girls home, it’s going to get dark soon, it will take forever for roadside assistance to get to us, how did I get us into this mess? So we get out to push and I have one of the girls get in to steer, hopefully this won’t be too hard. I’ve never been in this situation before, what do I know. It doesn’t take long for me to figure out we can’t do this on our own, and before I even think I should call roadside assistance to help, one after another three drivers pull over to help. No one passed us, they saw we needed help and didn’t even consider to keep driving to their destination. I was in shock, I let them take over and tried to take their instructions and do what I needed to do to get out of the ditch. With their help it didn’t take long, we were out of the ditch, thanked everyone and on our way we went.

As I was driving away I thought I should have gotten their names and thanked them even more.

But the shock of the whole situation, never mind a little of embarrassment, and

Time Torontonians paid their fair share Re: Toll on DVP would have profound impact on York Region residents, Nov. 25.

I can’t help notice that John Tory and his councillors are trying to get more money from the 905ers with his road tolls.

We already send a portion of our property taxes to the City of Toronto, while the property owners in the city pay an average of $750 a year less than the owners in the 905 area.

I think it’s time the City of Toronto raised their property taxes and Torontonians started paying their fair share. Of course, this would hurt John Tory’s chance at re-election.

the opportunity was gone. I decided then that I would write a letter to the local paper - maybe by chance one or all of the Good Samaritans will see it and realize how grateful we all were for the help!

This whole "adventure" was a reminder of what a great community we live in!

The discussion happens in living rooms, basements, baseball diamonds, hockey dressing rooms and, most often, pubs.

How many beers can I drink and safely drive?

Would I pass a breathalyzer if I was stopped by police?

Part of the problem of course is that it’s almost an impossible question that depends on a number of factors - hydration, weight (I weigh 142 lbs) and food intake.

Despite the increasing number of deaths, arrests, lost licences and ruined lives, most of us still have no idea how many drinks we can consume before we can’t legally drive.

So, in the interest of you, our readers, I got drunk.

Under the watchful gaze of a number of police officers, I took part in a York Regional Police/Association event to demonstrate how difficult it can be to determine your blood alcohol concentration. I know, I’m a modern day saint.

York Regional Police had me simulate what you might drink at a holiday party. Here is how it went: 1:10 p.m.: small glass champagne 1:12 p.m.: a beer 1:30 p.m.: another beer 1:55 p.m.: a shot of vodka 1:56 p.m. a third beer A test at 2 p.m. found I had a blood alcohol content level of 79. In other words if I were driving I’d be in the "warn range" (between 50 and 80) - my licence would be removed for three days and I would face a fine.

I also failed a field sobriety test in which I was asked to walk a line, stood on one foot and followed an officer’s pen with my eyes (not my head, as I was repeatedly reminded).

I was also reminded that it takes some time for alcohol to have its effect on the body, so as time goes on, even if one stops drinking, your blood alcohol can continue to rise.

In the ensuing hour and 20 minutes, I drank a cranberry soda (with another shot of vodka).

At 2:50 p.m., after eating a few blue cheese dipped celery sticks and a chicken wing, I blew again.

This time, the machine registered 95, meaning that if I had been driving, I would have been charged with impaired, lost my licence for a year and paid a fine.

Others had a very different reaction on that very same day. A 5-foot-4-inch female had a glass of champagne and 3-1/2 beers in an hour. She blew a 99.

So bear this in mind, everyone is different and there’s no simple guide - except for a shot of caution and a chaser of beware the consequences.

Olsen said the dinner is by invitation only, but that is just because if it wasn’t then the event would be overloaded.

"We try not trying to exclude anybody, and if anyone needs to be included they can notify the Lions," he added.

The main course is always roast beef, cake is dessert and there is a glass of wine for everyone who tipples.

Most importantly, Olsen assures, a great time is had by all.

"Some start arriving an hour early. We have the

We have a lot of people who are there year after year after year. They really look forward to it," he said.

Looking ahead to another great year for town

The average increase in East Gwillimbury will be $53, compared to $51 in Newmarket, $62 in Aurora and Whitchurch-Stouffville, $67 in Markham, and $72 in Richmond Hill and Vaughan.

Notice of Amendment to the York Region District School Board Education Development Charges By-law TAKE NOTICE that on the 13th day of December, 2016, the York Region District School Board (the “Board”) passed the Education Development Charges Amending Bylaw, 2016-02, which amends the 2014 Education Development Charges By-law 2014-02 of the Board.

AND TAKE NOTICE that any person or organization may appeal the said amending by-law to the Ontario Municipal Board under section 257.74 of the Education Act by filing with the Secretary of the Board on or before the 23rd day of January, 2017, a notice of appeal setting out the objection to the amending by-law and the reasons supporting the objection. The appeal may not raise an issue that could have been raised in an appeal under section 257.65 of the Education Act of the 2014 Education Development Charges By-law 2014-02.

The said amending by-law comes into force on December 18, 2016 and increases the education development charge on residential development to $5,416.00 per dwelling unit and the education development charge on non-residential development to $0.90 per square foot ($9.69 per square metre) of gross floor area.These rates will come into effect on March 1, 2017. Wheelchair athlete Tai Young takes stab at fencing The will and desire are without question.The real challenge for Tai Young is finding opponents.When the 12-year-old won a draw for one week at fencing camp at a 2015 Pan Am Games promotional event, he was thrilled to take a stab at the sport. He enjoyed the week so much he joined Vango Toronto Fencing Club in Markham.Only one catch: Since the Markham resident has been paraplegic since birth, unable to stand or walk, he has not encountered other wheelchair athletes with whom he can practice and

compete. "I have always liked fencing and thought it is so cool," said the seventh grade student at Black Walnut Public School in Markham. "I wanted to try it. It’s a cool sport to me."His mother, Lisa Young, was happy the eager youngster could participate in a sport but wasn’t sure where wheelchair fencing might lead."After that first week he decided he wanted to join," she said. "Vango had no experience with wheelchair fencing. I was skeptical because I didn’t know if they could accommodate him or that he’d be singled out. I didn’t know what it was and had no idea (fencing) was out there. It’s pret-

ty cool."There is just not a lot of wheelchair athletes in his age group, no one to compete against. We want to try and see what our options are for competition.

Tai just wants to try it and see how he can do."One offshoot he likes is the fact his workouts pinch-hit for his regular physiotherapy sessions. "It was really hard," he said, recalling his first experience in the sport. "It gave me a good workout. Light displays rock the region and season HEIDI RIEDNER hriedner@yrmg.com Some rockin’ holiday displays are lighting up the region and the season.

Two "big kids" in Georgina and Markham are not only giving Christmas Vacation’s Clark Griswold a run for his money, but also sharing their love of the season with their respective neighbourhoods.

Sean Johnston first put up a synchronized display with one simple controller in 2008, but he has since "lost count" of how many strings of lights go in to what can be described as nothing less than a spectacular display at his home on Bayview Avenue in Keswick.

"My wife and I have this running joke that I’m not allowed to talk about Christmas lights until September," he laughs.

That may be, but he is definitely planning, and programming, for months before actual setup, which takes about the entire month of November and represents a modest estimate of about $6,000 in equipment.

It also takes between 10 to 15 hours to program a light sequence to one song, which means just over 100 hours and 100 channels went in to the 15-minute, synchronized version of lights gone wild to seven festive tunes, including everything from "Frosty the Snowman" to a souped-up version of "Up on the Rooftop" from Beyoncé.

Yes, Virginia, there is some practicality behind the magic.

"I like doing it," he says simply. "I like sitting in my living room and seeing people pull up, hearing them laughing, and seeing the joy the show gives them. It really touches me and it makes me feel good. It’s a lot of fun and I enjoy it. Where else can you go as a family, in your warm car, for free, and watch something like this?"

Being left in a potential state of shock over his hydro bill wasn’t a concern for Brunt, who says a combination of LED lights that are only on for moments at a time equates to a mere $8 or $9 extra on the bill.

Besides, "it’s totally for the kids," he says.

That includes his own, who are nine, eight and three, and whose eyes are as big as their smiles over the display.

As for any Scrooges who may not exactly be wired to

appreciate the sheer enormity of brightly blinking, multicoloured lights blazing and dancing to some pretty rockin’ tunes with a few oldies thrown into the mix against a night sky?

There aren’t any to be found in this neighbourhood.

That includes Amy Friesen, who moved into the neighbourhood in August despite being told there was a "Griswold guy gone wild" who would be living right across the street from her new home.

"For us, this is Christ-

mas, and the whole spirit of the holidays," she says seriously. "My three kids love it and It brings everyone together. I’m excited to be a part of it."

Tim’s wife, Colleen, says her husband loves Christmas and does it all for their kids and the neighbourhood.

"He’s a big kid himself," she laughs. "He does this every year and, every year, he layers on more and more and more," she jokes.

"It’s fun and it certainly makes the Christmas spirit shine brightly."

The Canadian Federation of University Women, in partnership with York Region Media Group, hosts the seventh annual short story contest. Residents and students in York Region and Bradford under 23 years of age are invited to write a story beginning with the sentence "It was time for a change".

"The club brainstorms

and develops an open theme to encourage students to go in all directions with it," CFUW spokesperson Carol Gordon said.

"This is a wonderful opportunity for young writers to get some feedback."

For the second year, celebrity judge Jennifer Dance, an author from Stouffville, will be reading and selecting submissions for cash prizes of $400, $300, $200 and $25.

The winners will be announced in April 2017.

Along with the cash prize, the winning story

will be printed in the Newmarket Era, Aurora Banner and East Gwillimbury Express.

Last year, the contest attracted 150 submissions.

"This year we are really encouraging more young men to participate," she added. "Last year, the ratio of girls to boys was about 4:1."

The entry fee is $5, which goes toward cash prizes. Stories must be submitted by Feb. 13.

Markham resident opens her home to homeless for Christmas AMANDA PERSICO apersico@yrmg.com Christmas is a time for family, full of warm wishes and merry making - that is, if you have a family and warm home to go home to.

For many in the region, Christmas is just another cold day on the street.

One Markham woman is hoping to change that for a few of the region’s hundreds of homeless residents.

"Christmas is a beautiful time and it deserves to be shared," said Sharon Chisholm, a single-mother with one daughter.

"There are many who go without. It’s heart wrenching."

For years, Chisholm drove around the region on Christmas Eve with her daughter, Samantha, and handed out mitts, hats and a toonie for a warm coffee to those on the street.

"It’s a small tip of the scale," she said. "You can see how old they are, their hands are purple. In a minute, their face lights up and

they can’t believe someone cares."

While Chisholm plans to continue her mission to deliver warmth to homeless people on Christmas Eve, this year she wants to give a little more.

"We’ve been so blessed," she said. "We’ve had some hard times, too. We just want to help someone else in life. There is a lot of gratification in giving. Maybe that’s selfish.

Chisholm is opening her Markham home to anyone in the area who is without one this Christmas.

"It’s a couple more plates at the table and a couple more gifts under the tree," she said. "Everyone needs family for Christmas. Join us for dinner and be part of our extended family on Christmas Day." According to the United Way Toronto and York Region, more than 1,100 people used transition housing last year.
