The Newmarket mom, like any working parent, wrestled with the thought of leaving her son, now 12, home alone for short periods of time when he was 10 but also didn’t want to leave him in an after-school care program designed for younger children.

Before she did, her son attended a home-alone course offered by St. John Ambulance.

"I was very nervous, but after testing the waters and watching him use the techniques that he learned at the course, I felt a little better," she said. "Each time he’s alone, he becomes more confident, as do I." It was at the end of Grade 5 he was walking home from the bus stop, letting himself into the house, checking in with mom when he arrived and doing chores and homework.

The routine has helped both mom and son feel comfortable with his independence.

According to the Ontario Child and Family Services Act, any child under the age of 10 years left unattended can be at risk and, depending on the situation, police can lay charges, York Regional Police Const.

Laura Nicole said.

"There isn’t a firm one-sizefits-all," she added. "Parents need to know their child and the area, then make a decision based on all the circumstances."

The length of the walk, possible risks such as heavy traffic, railway crossings and how long children will be left alone should all be considered when making a decision.

While every child matures at a different rate, it is most important to note a 7-year-old doesn’t have the same mental ability as a 9- or 10-year old, Seneca King Campus behavioural sciences professor Laura Cavanagh said.

"At 7, kids can know a rule but don’t have the ability to apply it to a concrete situation in real life," she explained. "So

When assessing a child for readiness, ask questions and pay attention to their behaviour when you are around, which is

indicative of the behaviour they will practise when alone. For example, if you tell your child not to answer the phone while you are in the shower and they do it anyway, they may be tempted to open the door when home alone even though they have been told not to.

Parenting expert Alyson Schafer suggests running trials before letting a child walk to

school or stay home alone to put both child and parent at ease.

After teaching your child the rules for safely crossing a street and being aware of surroundings and so on, allow them to walk to school while you follow from a safe distance.

"Many parents are using the walking school bus in their neighbourhoods," Schaffer added. "Children from the same

As for leaving a child at home, ensure all emergency procedures are properly understood. Quiz your child on different scenarios to see how they respond, and set house rules you both agree on - for example, calling one parent when arriving home. Some parents have their children use video chat when cooking on their own.

Try leaving them alone for a short period of time as a trial run to see what happens.

Walking to school without a parent or guardian and being home alone are big milestones for children, Cavanagh said.

Aside from the physical health benefits of walking to school rather than sitting in a car, being given the opportunity to prove to a parent they are responsible can boost their independence and confidence.

Most children are eager to demonstrate their ability to take on responsibility at this age, and if the rules are clear and they are motivated, they will be more likely to comply.

"These tasks can be very rewarding for children and helps prepare them for the transition into adulthood when more responsibilities come their way," she added. "These independent tasks are well worth the consideration."

The organization that supports young mothers across the region primarily relies on monetary donations to improve lives going forward, however, it does have Roseys Closet for gently used donations.

Often people try to donate car seats, cribs and more with the best of intentions but with those items come liability because the safety standards of such items change so often, according to Agnoluzzi.

Those who wish to donate items should check online or call the organization before doing so because any items left on the front stoop cost money and resources to dispose of.

Salvation Army Thrift Stores accept donations daily through the Donor Welcome Centres. Donations are reviewed on site and while some get a second chance in the store, some do not, according to a Salvation Army spokesperson.

Items the stores cannot accept include used mattresses, box springs, carpets, hazardous materials like paint, propane tanks, barbecues, infant gear like car seats, cribs and stroll-

ers, tires and auto parts due to health and safety regulations. Many children’s items such as car seats, have an expiry date and sometimes cribs and strollers are subject to recalls due to safety concerns. Used mattresses are a breeding ground for mould, bacteria and unwanted guests such as bedbugs and dust mites, all of which can lead to a variety of health issues.

The stores also receive clothing that is torn, stained and overly worn often. While these textiles can’t be resold in the store, funds are generated by selling them to cloth graders who turn them into rags,

sell to buyers who make upholstery stuffing and carpet padding.

Every effort is made to recycle non-sellable items with eco-friendly suppliers.

Most of the time electronics need to be in working order to be donated.

Other charities shy away from accepting large furniture due to the risks associated with volunteers or employees moving the heavy items and they are difficult for people to fit into their vehicles. Items that cannot be resold, reused or recycled cost the charity funds to dispose of, which defeats the purpose of collecting donations.

Advice for those looking to donate Sort through donations carefully and if you are unsure if an item is acceptable, contact the charity you are looking to donate it to. Don’t head to the landfill immediately after an item is refused for donation as there are plenty of options when it comes to recycling or donating: • The Ontario SPCA accept donations of blankets, towels and unwearable textiles.

• York Region municipalities are partnering with organizations like Diabetes Canada to operate a textile recycling program.

• York Region waste depots accept electronics to recycle.

• JRCC Furniture Depot in Vaughan collects housewares, indoor furniture, medical/home-care supplies and equipment.

• Visit York.ca for a handy list of organizations you can donate to, location and what items they accept.

• Try using resale apps to find a home for the item, you never know what people are looking for.

• Dispose of hazardous materials in the proper manner at one of the many depots across York Region.

I was seven when my mother was first diagnosed with cancer, and eleven when it came back. Gran encouraged my mom to attend programs at Doane House Hospice. Mom went reluctantly at first, but soon saw the benefits of being with others who understood her journey. Knowing that I would have to deal with anticipatory grief, my parents suggested art therapy. I started 1:1 weekly sessions with Jennifer, the art therapist. My family also accessed programs and services as they coped with Mom’s declining health.

I didn’t understand what was happening. The idea of chemotherapy scared me.

We made a plan for me to go with my mom. Jennifer recommended that I draw what I thought chemotherapy would look like; I drew a dark, scary picture. After the appointment, Jennifer asked me to draw what it actually looked like; it was definitely less scary than what I had anticipated.

time, it was hard to think about Mom’s mortality. It helped me to make plans.

I was thirteen when Mom passed away. I stood up at my mom’s funeral to give the eulogy. She was a strong woman and I knew I could stay strong too. After Mom’s death, I continued to receive bereavement support from DHH; I went to groups with other girls who had lost a family member. It was important for me to be with people who “got it.”

Today, I believe this experience has influenced my life. In my work, I help children going through bad situations, or who have lost a parent like I have. People were there for me, so I want to be there for others. It’s been eight years since I last visited Doane House Hospice. It feels the same: safe and welcoming.

DHH was always a safe space where I could fully express myself. I could share anything and be understood and supported. It was okay to break down and cry, because they knew how to console me.

Mom’s bright light was definitely her unwavering strength. She didn’t let me see the bad... she stayed bright and happy. She involved me by asking my opinion about what she would wear. “Should I wear the bandana with happy faces today?” My mom loved bright colours. I remember drawing a card with bright flowers for DHH, dedicated to her memory.

As Mom’s condition progressed, Jennifer was honest. She didn’t give me false hope. Acting on my family’s wishes, she helped me prepare. At that

Motorists must focus on stopping distracted driving It shouldn’t have to be re-stated at this point and yet here it is: distracted driving is dangerous and unacceptable.

How dangerous? Well, according to the Ontario Provincial Police, distracted driving is responsible for more collisions on the roads it patrols than speeding and impaired-related crashes combined.

Numbers don’t lie and the OPP’s statistics are troubling to be sure. Its figures say that driver distraction has been the cause of 6,360 collisions on the roads it patrols since Jan. 1, while speeding and driver impairment were responsible for 4,700 and 1,158 crashes, respectively.

Forty-seven people have died so far this year as a result of a distracted driver, up from 39 at this time last year, the OPP says. What’s more, distracted driving has claimed more lives on OPP-patrolled roads than speeding and impaired for the past eight years except for 2012.

"Our collision data is compelling evidence that drivers who text, talk on their cellphone or are distracted in some other way, take a tremendous toll on the safety of those who share the road with them," OPP commissioner Vince Hawkes said in a statement. "Public complacency about inattentive driving can be just as dangerous as the behaviour itself. Until drivers, passengers and the general public take a firm stand against this road safety issue, these tragedies are expected to continue in large numbers on our roads.’’

Distracted driving remains an issue on the roadways patrolled by area police as well.

Just last week, York Regional Police issued a news release noting that 25 motorists had been charged with impaired, while 82 others had been cited for distracted driving. The release isn’t unique as YRP charges scores of people with distracted driving every week.

The penalties for being caught driving while distracted are steep, with fines ranging from $490 to $1,000 and three demerit points, and yet still not enough to discourage people from doing so. Of course, beyond a fine or a trip to a courthouse, a distracted driver could also have to live with severely injuring or killing someone.

This week marks the start of a new school year and that means more children out and about on our streets. As such, we should all ensure we devote our attention solely to the task of driving whenever we’re behind the wheel.

One injury or death resulting from distracted driving is too many. Let’s focus on reversing this trend.

all about the Khadr story, perhaps she should read the story of Fred McKay, whose son Kevin was killed by an IED while on patrol in Afghanistan.

(Toronto Sun, Aug. 5) He believes, as I and many more Canadians do, that Khadr should have been tired as a traitor.

McKay, whose family received $90,000 from the government, not that he argues that amount.

His objective is to have parliament ask Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to have Khadr tried for treason, since he is seen on video building IEDs while being a Canadian citizen.

Trudeau has not responded.

Be mindful of meanings behind symbols Re: Display of Confederate flag at Sutton Fair sparks criticism, Aug. 23 I am totally in agreement with the sentiments expressed by Nelson Mahmoudi in the front page story of Thursday, Aug. 24, of the Georgina Advocate.

The Confederate flag has no place being displayed anywhere in Georgina or elsewhere in Canada (except in a museum or Civi War re-enactment), as he stated.

With everything which is happening south of the border, we should be especially vigilant about symbols such as this and what they stand for.

Celebrate world flavours at Multicultural Festival LAURA FINNEY lfinney@yrmg.com Aurora’s Multicultural Festival is bringing an international experience to York Region.

With music, dancing, food, crafts, and more, visitors can explore world flavours and rhythms, said Shelley Ware, recreation supervisor with the town of Aurora.

"And, hopefully, learn something either about the culture they identify with or a culture they have been curious about right in their own backyard," she added. "Without requiring any passport or flight."

Food is a major element of the festival, and there will be a variety of samples.

This year, the theme is rice.

From curry to wild rice to risotto, there are many different ways to eat it.

"Rice is a global staple, yet it is celebrated and reflected very individually among almost all cultures," said Ware. "Which is also symbolic in the fact that we are all one humanity."

There will also be food demos.

"We have chefs coming in and teaching a few tricks of the trade such as how to roll sushi," said Ware.

Along with the food, there will also be back-toback performances including dancing and vocal performances.

Additionally, people will be able to participate in cultural games.

There will be an inflatable jousting system and cricket demonstration workshops.

And there will be several community partners with interactive activities in the community zone.

Last year, the Aurora

Public Library brought a map, and people could mark where their families came from, "which actually showed all the migration from the East over to the West. That was a relay nice visual that accumulated throughout the day," explained Ware.

During the festival, people can participate in Aurora’s Mosaic 150 by painting one of 600 tiles that will be part of an eight-by-12foot mosaic to be displayed in a town facility.

This is the second year for the festival, which will take place Sept. 9 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Aurora Town Park.

DARREN BONK I was born in Kapuskasing, Ontario, and being from northern Ontario I have always loved nature.

In early August, I was walking along the Holland River just south of Water Street in Newmarket when I saw a large beaver feeding at the base of an apple tree.

I knew he would have to make his way back to water and waited.

Sure enough the beaver grabbed one large apple and headed for the river affording me this photo.

The next day my wife and I were on the bridge south of Water Street when we saw the beaver and one of his kits as they swam toward the bridge.

Beavers are naturally shy so it was a treat to observe and photograph them.

machine the doctor travels in because it is much larger on the inside than the outside, (look it up).

That’s what the Jetta was. A compact car that seemed to have more room than it should on the inside. And 10 years later, nothing has changed.

There is still plenty of room for five adults and as much luggage as you would require.

In fact, you could probably throw in an extra golf bag and still have room in the trunk for more luggage.

But the Jetta has grown more sophisticated over those 10 years as well.

Let’s start with the Bi-Xenon headlights with an Adaptive Front-Light system. The headlights are about the best I have seen. But turn the wheel slightly and the headlights

It had been a long time since a car I had out for a test drive received a verbal compliment, especially when I was just stopped for gas.

But he was right. My tester for the week, the 2017 Volkswagen Jetta GLI, is a nice car in so many ways.

I first started driving Jettas 10 years ago.

I loved them and my family loved them. We use to call them the TARDIS. For you non-Dr. Who fans the TARDIS is the name of the time

move 13 degrees in the direction you are turning.

You can see the area you are turning into brighten just as you start your turn. Those lights came in handy on a dark drive home on Hwy. 115 after winning a little bit of money at the horse races at Kawartha Downs in Fraserville, just south of Peterborough.

The next bit of technology that stood out was the Park Distance Control.

Besides the on-screen camera that gives you a visual cue of any objects around the car, sensors beep a warning if you get too close to an object. What really caught my attention was when they worked when pulling into a parking lot that had the small concrete barriers about six inches tall.

A few times in my own car I pulled into a spot, only to misjudge that small barrier and run over it. Not with this GLI. The sensors warned me so I could stop before incurring any damage to the front grill.

My GLI tester for the week featured a 2.0-litre TSI engine that produced 210 hp and 207 lb/ft of torque. continued on page 12>>

<< continued from page 11 Every bit of that torque is needed when you put your foot to the floor on this Jetta because it throws you back into your seat as it blasts off. It’s even more thrilling when you throw it into sport mode.

The engine is matched to a six-speed DSG automatic transmission that comes with paddler shifters that frankly I have never seen a use for. If you want to handle the shifting, buy a Jetta with a manual transmission.

I started this review talking about the interior of the Jetta, which I think is one of the most attractive in its class.

The black interior with the red stitching is a standout and the ambient lighting is very noticeable.

Volkswagen’s also have one of the best instrument clusters and I am a big fan of the 6.3-inch touchscreen with a proximity sen-

sor that pulls up additional information as you move your hand towards it.

All this style and technology comes with a price. My tester was priced at $36,395.

Freight and PDI add another $1,625 and air conditioning exercise tax adds another $100.

Not cheap but you get a lot of car for that money.

Last year I had a VW Golf for a week and said it was a comfortable car to drive, like having a hot bowl of soup on a cold day.

Add a few hot and tangy spices to that bowl and you have the Jetta GLI.

"It’s one in a lifetime kind of thing," said Eric Partanen, director of sales and marketing at Paris Group Inc. "We’re Canada’s only porcelain and ceramic printers," he said "That’s pretty new technology."

The dishes are all food, dishwasher and microwave safe, which is not always the case with printed porcelain.

A lot of other personalized printed dishes are screen printed, where the ink sits on top of the glaze, he explained.

"They are not permanent ink," Partanen said.

Paris Group uses a different process.

They use food safe ink that penetrates the glaze and it is sealed shut in a

"We struck out," he said.

After that, Partanen said they researched and traveled the world to get the knowledge and equipment to print on dishes.

"It’s a pretty big production, but well worth it," he said.

Now they print for groups like the U.S. Coast Guard, the Canadian Government, restaurants and regular consumers.

When Canada’s 150

came around, Partanen said he thought it would be great to be a part of it.

They contacted the heritage minister and that led to a contract.

Partanen is so confident in their work, the Canada 150 dishes come with a 150-year warranty.

The standard warranty on their printed plates is 25 to 50 years that it won’t fade, he said.

The dishes are serial numbered and will be manufactured until the end of the year.

Training buddies go step-for-step for over 2 decades JOHN CUDMORE jcudmore@yrmg.com These women are in it for the long haul.

From Ironman events in Ohio and Mont Tremblant to the iconic Boston Marathon, as well as marathons in New York City and Chicago, Jean Parks and Pat Tuero have helped each other prepare for long-distance events for more than two decades.

Since meeting when their oldest children were infants in the same daycare centre, the Newmarket women have competed together in more than 50 events - including 15 marathons and two full Ironman events over their 23 years of friendship.

"It’s nice to have a good laugh over some of the things we’ve done," said Parks, whose running background stems from her college days. "We really understand each other, so that makes it easy to spend three

"Training is a good stress reliever and something I do for myself. Pat and I had a common ground. At the

time, our goal was to do longer distances. It made sense for us to hook up for training."

As their children grew and shared similar activi-

ties, the women - who live in the same neighbourhood have continued training and competing. They have also had each other’s backs and provided moral support.

"We’re good for each other that way," said Tuero, who is a year younger than her training buddy. "We encourage each other and push the other to do things we wouldn’t normally do.

She’s the one in the driveway picking me up to go to the pool first thing in the morning. I encouraged her to get into biking. We play off each other."

Currently, they are working together toward the Canada Army Run in Ottawa in mid-September, which for Parks will also include the Commander’s Challenge - a five-kilometre race within the main event.

"Jean likes to go above and beyond," said Tuero.

"She really is more serious about training and more diligent."

Schedules and lifestyles help dictate the frequency at which the women train together. Both commute to Toronto on a daily basis for their jobs and that impacts routines.

"I am more a morning person," said Parks, who often rises by 5 a.m. and works out before her commute.

"Pat does most of her training in the afternoon after work. Our schedules being what they are, we are more independent these days and it is now mostly riding together."

They started as runners.

They added cycling, preferred by Tuero, who is a member of the Newmarket Eagles Cycling Club. Parks was a member of her high school swim team and introduced that element to the sporting trilogy.

Seeking fresh challenges, the women will put their heads together to map out a future.

"Now, we have to figure out what’s next," said Tuero.

"Maybe we’ll try multisport events to keep things interesting. We’ve pushed ourselves to do something different, and that has pushed us upwards to different distances and new levels."

How parents can make school drop-offs a breeze Smooth drop-offs start with stress-free mornings.

Learn how to achieve both this school year with these practical tips.

Try DIY breakfast. Reduce time in the morning by simplifying breakfast. Set out some plates and cereal, chopped fruit, bread, cheese and yogurt to let the kids serve themselves, or keep these items on lower shelves in the fridge so little ones can access everything they need.

Start a launch pad. Organizing experts say having a designated spot in your entryway for things like the kids’ lunch boxes, backpacks, textbooks, permission slips and coats is a great way to keep things tidy and to make sure no one forgets anything. The launch pad can be a basket, bench or other container, and it helps if each child has their own.

Plan your route. School zones are becoming more dangerous. According to a recent CAA survey, the top two hazardous driving behaviours

that motorists perform in a school zone are speeding and distracted driving. For a smoother morning, try parking a couple of blocks away and walking the rest of the way with your children. You and your kids will also get an extra dose of exercise.

Help reduce traffic by finding alternative ways to school. Plan a safe route to walk or bike.

Follow the rules while behind the wheel.

Slowing down and giving yourself more time is the best way to keep school zones safe when dropping off your child. Avoid texting and other activities that can distract you while driving. Check with your child’s school administrator regarding designated drop off and pickup areas. Follow the signs posted in school zones, including speed limits.

Watch for CAA School Safety Patrollers, one of the largest youth volunteer programs in Canada. They help their peers get to school safely in many parts of the country.

The ninth annual New’bark’et takes place at Lions Park Sept. 9 and 10.

It will feature vendors, a kid zone and shows by Aqua Dogs and RuffSport.

"It’s well-loved in Newmarket and it’s been growing every year," said Sarah Ernst, community events programmer with recreation and culture for the town.

But this event is not just for people.

For $5, dogs can swim in the Gorman Outdoor Pool. Visitors with the 150 Days of Summer button will receive free admission into the Pooch Plunge.

"They (the dogs) love

it, it’s one of the busiest portions of the event," said Ernst.

This year, dogs can also have fun on land, too. There will be a lure course by Dog Lovers Days.

"If you are coming with your dog, you can have them go through the lure course," said Ernst.

As for cleaning the pool, this is the last event before it is closed for the summer.

"Right afterward, the pool gets drained and cleaned," said Ernst.

"What’s a little bit of extra fur."

New’bark’et runs 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and admission is free.

Badali and her colleagues crossed 115 kilometres of difficult terrain in unpredictable weather, slept in tents with only two to three hours of darkness and went without electricity and cell service to raise funds for Canadian women’s shelters and programs to help end family violence.

The Iceland Challenge for Shelter is a unique fundraising event in support of the foundation which encourages Royal LePage agents to raise funds and train for a demanding adventure travel experience.

In 2015, the Machu Picchu Challenge for Shelter saw dozens of agents raise half a million dollars for the real estate company’s cor-

porate charity.

Badali personally raised $6,500, surpassing her $5,000 goal.

It will be donated to Yellow Brick House, with a portion of the funds going to support domestic violence prevention programs across Canada, including those focused on youth, to help break the cycle of family violence.

The clubhouse overlooking this closing par-4 test provides a backdrop to the green. Patrons on the members’ patio often keep a keen eye on finishing groups. On the right day, it’s a fun atmosphere.

Not a killer in terms of length at 337 from the white tees, it is still a challenge playing to a wellbunkered and elevated green protected by a pond.

Valley - No. 5. This tough par-3 plays to 166 yards (whites/silver tees) over a valley to an elongat-

The Aurora Sports Hall of Fame is aiming to cover both past and future sport highlights in the now when it comes to celebrating the role of sport and athletes and their place in the history of the municipality.

Recognizing that history and future are linked, the hall is seeking public input for its Moments In Sports project, casting a spotlight at significant sports moments in Aurora’s history to be shown off at the sports hall of fame inside the Stronach Aurora Recreation Complex.

GOODMAN, Robert Keith April 12, 1938 - September 1, 2017 Robert “Bob” Goodman passed away peacefully in the arms of his loving wife and best friend Edith Goodman at Southlake Regional Health Centre in Newmarket, Ontario. Bob was a devoted husband to Edith for almost 55 wonderful years. He was a loving father that deeply cared and was proud of son Jonathan (Sheri Orct) and daughter Kristen (Dave Unsworth).

Nothing gave Bob greater joy than time spent with his family and especially his grandchildren. He was a wonderful Grandpa to Ethan and Adam Goodman and beloved “Poppa” of Sarah and Madeline Unsworth. Bob valued and loved the extended Goodman family and came from a large family that included six siblings. Bob was predeceased by sisters Bernice, Beryl, Norma and brother John. He cherished spending time with his brother Don “Benny” (Hilda) and sister Linda along with nieces and nephews this summer while on vacation in Camlachie (near Sarnia) where he spent much of his formative years.

Bob’s business and academic career spanned over 30 years including working in the chemical industry with Polysar in Sarnia, pursuing a Masters Degree at Michigan State and then a distinguished career at Imperial Oil in Human Resources which took him from Corunna to Halifax to Newmarket and finally a well-deserved retirement in Alliston.

Over his career Bob earned the respect and loyalty of countless employees and co-workers through his strength of character, sense of empathy, generosity, and a relentless and enduring sense of humour; all values that made him the wonderful husband, father and friend to those around him. A Farewell Celebration of Bob’s Life will be held in Alliston at W. John Thomas Funeral Home from 1 - 4 p.m. on Saturday September 16, 2017.

WALL, Ethel It is with great sadness that the family of Ethel Juanita Wall (nee Henderson) announces her passing on Sunday, September 3, 2017 at 95 years of age. She was born on August 20th, 1922, in Stayner, Ontario. She was predeceased by her son Robert O’Desse, her sisters, Alma Rowsell and Lois Arbour, also her brothers Cecil and Russell Henderson. She is survived by her daughter Lorraine Edwards (Gary) of Okotoks, Alberta and her son Peter O’Desse (Kelda) of Richmond Hill, Ontario. Also, a special niece Myrna McDonald of Calgary, Alberta, whom she considered to be her second daughter.

She is also survived by six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and four greatgreat-grandchildren.

Ethel worked for many years in the newspaper business, beginning at the Newmarket Post and finally, at the Newmarket Era until she retired in 1987. She was a strong, proud woman, and considered by many, a zany character, not only at work, but socially as well. Always ready for a good time and a laugh. HUDAK, Edith Irene (nee Tomesch) March 6, 1927 - September 3, 2017 Passing very peacefully with family at her side, Edith was predeceased by her beloved husband Nicholas (2003), proud mother of Alan (Maggie) and Lori (Doug Payne) and her five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, proud aunt to many nieces and nephews. Edith was born in Lodz, Poland, daughter of Alma and Joseph, sister to George (predeceased 2015), Alice, and Christina (predeceased 1945). The family managed to reunite in the aftermath of WWII and resettled in Canada. Edith worked as a draftsman at Westinghouse, Hamilton, and was studying to become an engineer when she met a young dashing co-worker who became the great love of her life. Edith and Nick enjoyed 50 years together, and travelled the world, first through Nick’s work, then for their own interest and pleasure. Edith enjoyed making the world a beautiful place with her many creative and artistic talents. She and Nick designed their dream retirement home and created award-winning gardens, earning the coveted Mayor’s Cup award for the best garden in Burlington. Edith’s final years were a struggle with ever increasing dementia though she never lost her sense of style and love of flowers. Her family would like to most sincerely thank the dedicated and supportive team at Trillium Manor Long Term Care, in Orillia.
