Laura Engsig steps into the spotlight. Along with Vaughan tenor Christopher Dallo, Aurora violinist Wesley Bells and Chantal’s Dance Academy members, the Newmarket clarinet player performs at the Visual and Performing Arts Newmarket’s 16th Young Artists’ Showcase today. “I’ve never really had a chance to design my own performance before,” she said. “There’s going to be a lot of diverse styles in music. You’ll get a broad variety of arts and entertainment. It’ll be a really great show.” Event co-ordinator Linda Condy said the showcase gives exposure to budding York Region performers. “It was started by folks who wanted to bring world-class artists here,” she said. “From that, we developed this idea of supporting young artists from the Newmarket

area, giving them a chance to perform in their hometown.” The performers are compensated, through fundraising efforts and money generated from a Newmarket Celebrates the Arts grant. “This is not a volunteer gig,” Ms Condy said. “It really is great for the kids. They get decent publicity and it’s great to put in their portfolio.” Admission is $40 for a pack of four tickets, $15 for adults and $10 for students. “These are young people with an incredible maturity and understanding of the arts and music,” Ms Condy said. “You’ll be astonished at the talent and level of performance.” The event takes place at the Newmarket Theatre, at 505 Pickering Cres. Still time to enter story contest Young adults are being challenged to put pen to paper. The Canadian Federation of University Women Aurora-Newmarket, along with The Era and The Banner, encourage writers 22 years and younger to submit a 750-word short story that begins with the sentence, “I couldn’t believe it really happened.” Susan Lennard, one of the co-chairpersons of the contest committee, explains the contest, now in its fourth year, is dedicated to promoting learning and literacy. She said young writers from York Region and Bradford West Gwillimbury are encouraged to be creative for a chance to win one of three cash prizes of $200, $200 and $400. The winner’s short story will also be published in The Era and The Banner and posted on the federation’s website. Submissions will be reviewed by members of the federation who will select the top 10 finalists. The winners will be selected from the top 10 by three judges, including the federation president, a representative from the newspapers and a professional author. There’s a $5 fee to enter. The deadline is Feb. 14. The winner and two runners-up will be announced in April. The top 10 finalists will be invited to a celebration reception. Disneyesque. The trends for swanky new builds on smaller lots are 10-footplus ceiling heights and high-end finishes, she said. “Builders are going high and dressing interiors to kill,” she said. Solid eight-foot doors, wideback bend trim, high baseboards, wainscoting and chair rails complemented by waffle and coffered ceiling finishes with multiple rows of crown moulding are also in vogue. Extra large picture windows with thick contemporary and traditional sills and trim are also high-demand options, she said. Nothing is too extreme when the sky’s the limit. Great Gulf executive vicepresident Christopher Wein has designed and marketed lavish homes for more than 20 years. He recalled one wealthy homeowner who installed a show garage. In addition to a traditional space to park cars, the homeowner commissioned a second area for two vintage Ferraris, a Porsche and Lambourghini. A solid glass wall separated the vehicles from the living room. “He didn’t drive the sports cars,” Mr. Wein said. “They were art pieces.” Builders of custom homes,
condominiums and communities, including King Oaks in King City, Great Gulf has a portfolio of custom amenities. Mr. Wein has designed several cigar lounges and man caves. One all-male den called for custom urinals in the washroom. Another family ordered a separate area with dog wash baths, a grooming area and canine Jacuzzi. Secret passageways are also a fun option. One gentleman built a wine cellar in his basement and, with the touch of a special bottle, a spiral staircase opened to his third-floor master bedroom. People with the money are now opting for dual kitchens, Mr. Wein said. One is the home’s show kitchen and the other is a catering kitchen with preparation, cooking and staging areas. “If they’re having a dinner party, no one can see the caterers or staff or hear dishwashers while they hang out in the main kitchen,” he said. His and her toilets and $100,000 closets are popular and flat-screen televisions behind bathroom vanity mirrors are trending. “You can watch the news and shave,” he said. “Very cool.” Real Estate Homeward sales representatives Hanne and John Welsh recently represented a
9,000-square-foot listing on five acres in Whitchurch-Stouffville. The $2.8-million, newly built home featured a staggering array of custom comforts. The multi-level, six-bedroom open concept home is traversed via floating staircases and lit by 500 LED pot lights. There is 2,400 linear feet of crown moulding and the intricate, one-of-a-kind crystal chandeliers took 14 days to install. The property, with a gym, inground salt water pool, hot tub, 10-person cookhouse and workshop, is a high-end bargain, Mr. Welsh said. With annual property taxes of $7,500, the luxurious manor is a good value compared to similar homes on smaller lots in Toronto, he added. An Internet search for outrageous amenities revealed a $10-million Las Vegas residence with a full water park with sandy beach island, sunken swim-up bar and lazy river. The owners of a $7.4-million Greenwich, Connecticut home imported and converted an English phone booth into a poolside outdoor shower. Recently, Sotheby’s International Realty sold a Beverly Hills home, complete with a giant bird-shaped swimming pool and underwater observation room.

Location is the biggest factor for home buyers, but many other things come into consideration. For the average home, an updated kitchen, spiffy bathroom renovation or new appliances can seal the deal for the owner and agent. Upgraded amenities can add lustre to homes in York Region where, according to the latest MLS indexes, single detached prices average $322,400 in Georgina to $774,000 in Richmond Hill. The operative word is average. When it comes to money-isno-object, super-affluent buyers browsing the rarefied realms of luxury real estate, über-opulent amenities can be as eye popping as house prices. In King, where upscale houses have sold for as much as $40 million, the included extras often cost as much as the average home, Century 21 Heritage Group Ltd. broker Michele Denniston said. “In the country, it’s all about land, acreage,” the King real estate specialist said. “Often there are barns, pool houses, outdoor kitchens and out buildings. Some are like second houses.” Sales of posh King properties are brisk, she said. According to a December RE/ MAX report, luxury home sales
in the GTA, Canada’s largest real estate market, continued to climb in 2013, rising 18 per cent to 1,908 units, setting a new record for activity priced in excess of $1.5 million. Sumptuous details, such as pools, gyms, landscaping and wine cellars are standard for up-market homes, Ms Denniston said. That means these houses take extravagance to another level. Ms Denniston has seen buyers order a three-storey elevator, geothermal heating and indoor waterfalls. Recently, she was in a listed property whose owners enjoyed movies. “It was truly a home theatre,” she said. “It had 15 rows of seating and was the size of a Cineplex.” A well-to-do auto enthusiast recently bought a home with a three-car garage appointed similarly to the home’s interior, plus a hydraulic lift so he could store hobby vehicles above his regular rides, Royal LePage York North Realty broker Leigh Sugar said. Based in Newmarket, she sells multi-million dollar estate homes throughout York Region and is still amazed at what money can buy. Ms Sugar has witnessed two and three-storey interior water fountains, live trees, bowling alleys, squash courts and palatial recreation rooms bordering on

Melanie from Newmarket writes, “I want to make a feature wall in my family room, one in my living room and another in the master bedroom to give our place some punch. How do I mix wall colours to do this the best way possible? I don’t know what colours work with what.” Well, Melanie, you’ve asked a multi-faceted question with lots of potential answers. Feature walls are a simple and creative way to add character and depth to any space, but there is one element of your question that concerns me, namely the number of feature walls you’re seeking to create. While feature walls can definitely have a place in good interior design, you can overdo it. I am a proponent of the less-is-more school of thought and as such would recommend the designs you’re working hard to create in your home not suffer death-by-feature-wall. Try to limit the number of rooms in which you employ this design tactic to one or two.
Use feature wall to create focal point
The “feature wall” should not be confused with a room’s focal point, which is the heart of any space. If you have a fireplace in the family room, this is the space’s natural focal point, so if you’re going to highlight a wall in this space, it should be the fireplace wall. A feature wall should not compete with the room’s focal point, so once you have established what the focal area is, the rest of the room including the furniture, should be oriented to work around it and should not compete with it for your attention. You can use a feature wall in a room that perhaps lacks a distinctive focal point. For example, if the windows in your bedroom are small or unattractive, creating a feature wall behind the bed will draw your attention away from the elements of the room you do want to focus on. In spaces where there are no room-defining focal points (such as a fireplace or a large window), a feature wall will create some impact. Make every
effort to create your feature wall across from the entrance to the room. You want to see the most impactful element of the room as you enter it, not as you leave it. If you’re not confident mixing colours, select one colour for the room and then choose a darker hue in the same colour family to use on your feature wall. The “drop down” paint chips in the smaller paint fan decks are perfect for giving you guidance in these selections. That said, not all feature walls need to be high contrast. Making a subtle colour change from one wall to the next can be enough to draw attention to the wall without punching you in the nose when you walk in the room. There is a feature wall in a bathroom in our home and I have had a number of people ask me if the back wall is a different colour. The change is subtle enough that they just aren’t sure, which is the simple effect I was going for. Don’t do your creativity an injustice by limiting
Imagine your home, totally organized!
Custom Closets, Garage Cabinets Home Offices, Pantries, Laundries and Hobby Rooms
yourself to only the use of one paint colour to creature your feature wall. There are some wonderfully large print wallpaper options available that hang like art in any room and can be impactful and dramatic on feature walls. A fireplace feature can be given an interesting and somewhat architectural turn by adding a tile detail to the fireplace surround and indeed to the entire wall. Select a large size dark tile, leather or wooden panel to change the face of your entire fireplace. The greater the contrast from the regular painted wall, the greater the impact in the fireplace will be. Contact your local contractor for help with installing tiles or wood panels to the fireplace face. Have a design question that needs answering? Email home@yrmg.com. There is good news for minimum wage earners. Not so much for small business owners. Thursday, Ontario announced the minimum wage will jump from $10.25 to $11 per hour June 1.
Reflects CPI The new rate reflects the rise in the Consumer Price Index since the last minimum wage increase in 2010 and is part of the government’s commitment to fairness, Premier Kathleen Wynne said. The .75-cent-per-hour raise equates to an approximate 6.8per-cent spike. An increase in the minimum wage will help improve the standard of living for hardworking people across the province, Ms Wynne said. Entrepreneurs, meanwhile, are wondering if the wage hike could be a hardship. “Absolutely,” Aurora Chamber of Commerce CEO Judy Marshall said. “I think businesses will have to reflect on their expenses and do planning for the year. Many businesses have a Dec. 31 year end. Now, they’ll have to redo

their budgets halfway through the year.” The government will also introduce legislation that would tie future minimum wage increases
to the index, Ms Wynne said. This will ensure the minimum wage keeps up with the cost of living and increases are predictable for businesses and families.
Under the proposed legislation, increases would be announced by April 1 and come into effect Oct. 1. Ms Marshall welcomed the five-month lead time. “That’s a good amount of notice, but from the chamber’s perspective, there will be difficulty,” she said. The proposed legislation would act on recommendations Ontario’s minimum wage advisory panel tabled earlier this week. The panel consulted with business, labour, youth and anti-poverty representatives. The government is focused on helping Ontarians by ensuring fairness for people living on minimum wage and predictability for business, Labour Minister Yasir Naqvi said. “By establishing a transparent, fair and responsible method of setting minimum wage in the future, we are taking the politics out of minimum wage,” he said. “This will provide fairness for Ontario workers and their families and predictability and transparency for our businesses to remain competitive and succeed.”
Wage facts 4The 75-cent increase reflects the annual change in Ontario’s Consumer Price Index since the last increase March 31, 2010 4The province’s minimum wage advisory panel recommends the province perform a full review of its minimum wage rates and revision process every five years. 4The panel held 10 public meetings and received more than 400 submissions from organizations, businesses and individual Ontarians.

Main Street has vast history; let’s fight to keep it
It’s time to put limit on terms for mayors
M
ost people in Newmarket look at Main Street as a quaint, but old part of town, with narrow streets, old buildings and completely unsuited for the vehicular traffic. In fact, most people don’t even venture to Main. That’s a shame, because Newmarket grew up and prospered along Main, erecting four towers, the Christian Baptist Church, the Old Town Hall, Trinity United Church and the post office tower to oversee the commerce and celebrations that have taken place along this historic street. People may not know Main once hosted inns and taverns that flourished with the stagecoaches that would announce their arrival with the blast from a long horn as the thoroughbred horses rounded the Cawthra Building at Main and Water Street. People may not know William Lyon Mackenzie, the leader of the 1837 Upper Canada Rebellion, gave his first rebellion speech on our Main Street and, eight decades later, his grandson, William Lyon Mackenzie King, campaigned along this street. In fact, we sent him to Ottawa as the Prime Minister of Canada. People may not know Robert Simpson cut his teeth in retail on this street before heading to Toronto to establish one of Canada’s retail empires or that Lord Dufferin, governor general of Canada, was serenaded by the local high school choir with the first public singing of The Maple Leaf Forever as he lay the cornerstone for the Christian Baptism Church. People may not know Newmarket sent its soldiers off to war marching up Main, first in 1885, the North West Rebellion, then in the First and Second World Wars. The people and events are gone, but the street and its buildings stand in testament to those people and events. That is our heritage in Newmarket. Our fathers’ generation has left us a viewscape, preserved in the
Robert Buchan four towers. It is on our shoulders to pass it on to our kids. Some people do know our history and have worked hard to propose a Lower Main Street Heritage Conservation District to protect Newmarket’s core historical district. Council passed this bylaw, only to have it appealed to the OMB by a developer, bent on upstaging our skyline with an nine-story condominium, changing Newmarket’s Main Street forever. Supporters talk about new money, new buildings to replace crumbling structures and increased population to kickstart an economic revival on Main. Opponents see a money grab by the developer as the value of the property skyrockets with the rezoning, increasing adjacent property values and upping rents for Main merchants. Whichever way this decision goes, it will be a watershed moment in our town’s history. Will we preserve our Main, touted as arguably the most historic street in Newmarket and one of the most visually interesting in the Toronto region? Come out to council chambers tomorrow and make your views known. Pass on our history intact to our children. Be counted with those who stood for this town’s past because, in the end, Main Street matters. Robert Buchan is the president of the Newmarket Historical Society.
One term was enough, two is too many and three is more than the citizens of Newmarket should have to endure. If there was ever a case for limiting the number of terms for a mayor to hold office, this is it. Consider the following: Newmarket Mayor Tony Van Bynen seems to ignore the disaster on Davis Drive. He takes credit for our town being recognized in a national survey as one of the top 10 places in Canada to live, but I wonder what the merchants on Davis think about that? He brags about managing growth, saying “So that it develops along the Yonge Street and Davis corridor and not in our residential neighbourhoods”. Twenty seven townhomes are going up on the north side of Eagle Street. Isn’t that a residential neighbourhood? And what about those poor home owners who are literally going to live in the shadow of those monster developments along Yonge? And then, of course, we have a mayor who, in the past years, has been sent emails, but doesn’t seem to have time to respond. Don’t try to get answers regarding the plowing of our streets and sidewalks or other appar-

Kind gestures mean a lot in times of need I want to thank the kind individuals who helped me and my three children after an accident Jan. 27. Our van hit an icy patch in Holland Landing, slid across the road, hit a pole and then rolled over. Thankfully we were not injured, but we were shaken up. A young woman arrived at the scene and called 911 for us. Someone helped me release my seatbelt, which was tricky to do hanging upside down. A kind gentleman stopped and allowed my children to keep warm in his pickup truck while we waited for police to arrive. He also helped direct traffic. Thank you, as well, to the man who lived across the road and the first responders who took care of everything in a fast and calm manner. These kind gestures meant so much in a situation such as ours.

Kathryn Marriott wants to find the family of artist John Cakebread, who gave this piece to Kathryn’s father, William Brittain, in 1933.
Finding Cakebread:Woman searches for artist’s family By Chris Simon
csimon@yrmg.com
As a young child, Kathryn Marriott was scared by a portrait. The piece of art, a charcoal or pencil drawing of a man’s face, hung on the back of a bedroom door at her family’s home in Wyoming, ON, a small community east of Sarnia. Every time she’d attempt to go to sleep in the room, the drawing’s realistic look gave the now 80-year-old chills. “When it was put on the back of the door, it would scare the heck out of me,” she said, sitting in a mostly empty living room Thursday. Eventually, the piece was taken down, rolled up and placed in storage. When Ms Marriott inherited the work in the early 1990s, she left it mostly untouched, only occasionally unfurling it to revive thoughts from her childhood or instigate a talking point. After suffering a stroke three years ago, Ms Marriott began the search for the artist’s family, in an attempt to hand the piece over to the folks who would likely appreciate it most. So far, she’s had little luck. And now, as she packs her bags, gives

Her father, William Brittain, received the drawing directly from the artist, John Cakebread, in February 1933. The men were close friends who attended the University of Toronto together during the late 1920s and early 1930s. There was a seeming affection between them, since the piece is signed “To Bill with love and kisses”. “They became wonderful friends,” Ms Marriott said. “(Mr.) Cakebread became a commercial artist.” Ms Marriott believes Mr. Cakebread may have lived in King City, though she cannot confirm that. She’s hoping someone from his family will come forward soon, to see the excellent work of their ancestor for themselves. “Family possessions are very important,” she said.

AquaPro Pools and Hot Tubs “We are so excited about winning this award. Thank you readers. “ says co-owner Jodi. “This is our ninth year in business. We changed our name from Sundance Spas because customers didn’t realize we did pools and hot tubs.” Jodi has an interior design degree from Ryerson. She evolved into the pool business when clients started asking her to help them design their outside space too. And she’s also uniquely qualified when it comes to hot tubs and understanding their health benefits – she has a Kinesiology degree from Western. That means she’s an exercise specialist. In fact, she worked as a Kinesiologist in a clinic for five years. Co-owner Arnold has a background in construction so when it comes to installing pools and hot tubs, he’s the expert. “Pools are more than a place to relax and have fun” says Jodi, “although fun is certainly part of it. Pools can bring families together. We’re seeing a lot of Boomers buying pools so their grandkids can have the same pool experience they had growing up. And hot tubs, well they provide fun 12 months of the year. Come and see us, we’re on Yonge Street, two lights south of Green Lane.”
Aurora Children’s Centre Thank you to the readers for selecting us as a Readers’ Choice winner for Child Care. We’ve provided quality child care for children ages 18 months to 12 years of age in our local and surrounding community for 26 years. We’re not just a child-care facility, we’re a nurturing, educational, play-based environment. Our Registered Early Childhood Educators, Certified Elementary Teachers and Teaching Assistants take pride in providing children with new experiences and life skills that they will take with them throughout their lives. We have 17,285 square feet of indoor space which includes 10 classrooms, a gymnasium, and a
dining hall. Outside we have three large playgrounds and access to beautiful green space with walking paths where the children can enjoy nature and have a ‘hands-on’ experience. We also offer a fabulous Summer Camp program with team and individual projects, offsite excursions and a variety of sports. We also operate Cardinal Carter Childcare Centre located at the south end of Aurora. This smaller site provides care from 18 months to 3.6 years of age and offers its own unique programs very similar to Aurora Children’s Centre. These programs are also run by highly qualified, dedicated staff. We are also thinking about innovative and creative ways to enhance a child’s experience in child care. We use the talents of our staff, as well as bringing in outside agencies to add to our play based and educational curriculum.
Aurora Montessori School An impressive 24-year history of outstanding academic success in developing self-confident, outgoing and self-reliant students goes a long way to explaining why Era and Banner readers selected Aurora Montessori School for a Readers Choice Award. Montessori emphasizes learning through all five senses, not just through listening, watching or reading. Children in Montessori classes learn at their own, individual pace and according to their own choice of activities from hundreds of possibilities. In classes for Toddler (18 months to 3 years), Casa (3 to 6 years) or Elementary (Grades 1 to 8), children at Aurora Montessori learn in a supportive and non-competitive environment. Learning is an exciting process of discovery, leading to concentration, motivation, self-discipline and love of learning. The Aurora Montessori School story began in 1989 when the founder and principal, Sharon Kashani, rented a picturesque old farm house on the corner of Bayview and Wellington. In September of 1998, a state-of-the-art facility on 14 beautiful rolling acres at St. John’s Sideroad and Industrial Parkway became the new home of Aurora Montessori School. Selecting the best school to meet the needs of your child is one of the most important decisions you’ll ever make regarding his or her intellectual and social development. Tours may be booked daily by calling 905-841-0065 ext. 301 so that you can see for yourself how children from 18 months to 14 years enjoy the advantage of an enriched learning environment.

Borealis Naturopathic Health Centre
Dr. Janice Shouldice, N.D., believes a sound knowledge of the body and ability to blend that science with compassion and caring is the major reason Era and Banner readers chose Borealis Naturopathic Health Centre for a Reader’s Choice Award. “We view the individual as a whole, where symptoms of disease are seen as warning signals of improper functioning and unfavourable lifestyle habits,” says Janice, a Naturopathic Doctor and Registered Nutritional Consultant. “Our mission is to help people of all ages address their health concerns and achieve optimal health and well-being.” Borealis, a multidisciplinary medical centre with a professional staff of four Naturopathic Doctors, a doctor of Traditional Chinese Medicine, two Homeopathic Doctors and a Registered Massage Therapist, has quietly built a reputation for its organic, holistic and integrated approach to health concerns and disease prevention. Patients at Borealis are wholly involved in their individualized health programs and learn to make effective, educated self-care decisions to prevent future health problems. A graduate of the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine in 1999, Janice also served on the Complaints Resolution Committee of the Board of Drugless Therapy, which regulates Naturopaths in Ontario. The Borealis Naturopathic Health Centre has a new location at 615 Davis Drive #302, across from the hospital. Parking is free for their patients, and they can be reached by calling 905-830-1236. Our clinic’s team consists of Chiropractors, a physiotherapist, a registered massage therapist, an acupuncturist, and a chiropodist. HOME HARDWARE
Home Hardware was founded in 1964 by a group of 120 independent hardware dealers in Ontario. Their goal was to obtain quantity purchasing to gain an advantage over their competition. This year they are celebrating their 50th Anniversary! The company grew in leaps and bounds, quickly becoming the Canadian success story it is today, with over 1,000 stores from coast to coast. There have been many changes over the years, but Home Hardware dealers have been able to maintain their hometown, customer-friendly service, while their collective buying power enables them to remain extremely competitive. For the 18th year in a row, Home Hardware has been voted #1 Hardware Store by The Era and The Banner Readers. This speaks volumes about the way these stores have been active in our community, sponsoring local teams, charities and events. In true family tradition, many of the stores pass from generation to generation, as is the case with Newmarket Home Hardware and Aurora Home Hardware Building Centre. Newmarket Home Hardware, located at 828 Davis Drive, was opened in 1978 by Gerry Langdon and is today owned and operated by his daughters Deborah Judges and Lee Cullingham. They have an outstanding team of employees dedicated to customer satisfaction. Aurora Home Hardware Building Centre, located at 289 Wellington Street E., was opened by Stuart and Doreen Barfitt in 1970 and is today operated by their sons Russ, Randy, Rob and their families. They, too, are proud of the great group of employees they have working for them. Mount Albert Home Hardware, located at 6 Princess St., Mount Albert, is operated by brothers Tom and Doug Willitts. They purchased the local independent lumberyard and store in 1990. In 2005, they joined the Home Hardware Family They and their staff are proud to be a part of the local community.

Laurion Law is there to guide you for business startups, ongoing growth, business purchases, and winding up or selling your business. LIPTON’S AUDIO VIDEO “We’ve been proudly exceeding customer expectations for over 30 years.” says owner Lindsay Lipton. “We’re York Region’s original custom Home Entertainment Audio/Video specialty store and we are honoured to be voted this Readers’ Choice award. We serve clients in Toronto, the GTA, Newmarket, Aurora, King City, Bradford, Schomberg, Tottenham, Stouffville, Thornhill, Richmond Hill, and pretty much most of cottage country.” He continues, “Over the years we’ve worked directly with clients, and their designers, architects and contractors to come up with whole home audio video solutions that blend in with the décor and functionality of their homes.” From the showroom to your home, Lipton’s ensures an exceptional customer experience. Enthusiastic, knowledgeable, mature, professional staff members assist you with your purchase. Then an experienced installation team takes over and handles everything from pre-wiring your upcoming project, to retro-fitting “impossible” existing home locations, to mounting your new system, to setting up and programing your multi-room audio system, and finally, teaching you and your family how it all works. Their Ad Cheque pricing policy ensures that you pay the most competitive price, every day, guaranteed! And that means total peace of mind. Lipton’s is a member of AVU Association of Canadian independent electronics dealers. Lindsay adds, “That ensures Big Box competitive pricing every day for our customers but with personalized one-on-one service that no chain store can duplicate. Stop in our Newmarket Store at 130 Davis Drive and speak with one of our sales specialists.”

once upon a child
“We buy and sell gently used kids’ stuff every day” says co-owner Tiffany. “That means clothes, toys, and equipment. We are very pleased to be honoured with a Readers’ Choice Award. Thank you readers. ” This is not your typical secondhand store. Customers are encouraged to bring in their kids’ stuff and are paid cash on the spot. That is, if they meet the store’s resale criteria. The store only buys clothing and accessories that have been purchased within the last five years. The items have to meet current style, safety and condition standards. You find that all clothes are freshly laundered and in good condition – no stains, fading or excessive wear – that’s all the store will buy. And you’ll find toys that are clean and in working order…because, well, that’s what the store buys. Tiffany says, “It’s a great concept – recycling at its best. If your child no longer needs these items and they are still in good condition, then someone else may benefit from the items at much lower than retail cost. We took over this business three years ago. We now have a staff of up to 15 people who all enjoy working here. I’d like to thank our staff for making this store a place that customers want to visit. ”

PEEKABOO CHILD CARE CENTRE “We are delighted to receive a Readers’ Choice award for Peekaboo, thank you to the readers who believed in us.” says owner Stacey Muhs. Peekaboo was designed to meet the individual needs of children between six weeks old and six years old. The facility is beautiful with large, bright, well-equipped classrooms, two large outdoor playgrounds, an indoor gym and an on-site kitchen where lunch and snacks are prepared fresh daily. It’s a welcoming place with caring, qualified teachers. Something that’s unique to Peekaboo is the parent connection. That started 15 years ago with their video-over-the-internet technology, an amazing sharing tool to give parents the ability to see their child during the day over the internet. In 2013, PIPEline (Peekaboo’s Information Parent Exchange line) was launched to give parents updates on their child’s day including milestones they are working on and achieving, how they slept, ate, played and so much more, right to their computer or mobile device. Peekaboo really helps you be there, when you can’t be there. You’re welcome to come in any time for a tour, no appointment needed, just another way Peekaboo works to help busy families.

tracey gale, m.Sc., AUDIOLOGIST – I can HEAR BUT I DON’T UNDERSTAND
Did you know that 10% of adults suffer from hearing loss that affects their quality of life? Did you know that another 50% of the population are negatively affected because it is difficult or impossible to talk to a friend or loved one who is hard of hearing? Signs of Hearing Loss. One of the most common complaints from people with hearing loss is that they can hear people talking, but cannot understand what is being said. Often the person with hearing loss will attribute their difficulties to other people mumbling or not speaking loudly enough. In reality, this situation is most often caused by High Frequency Hearing Loss. This condition negatively affects the listener’s ability to hear the higher pitched parts of human speech, making it difficult or impossible to clearly understand human speech. Dealing with Hearing Loss Fortunately 9 out 10 people with hearing loss will benefit from the use of hearing aids. Recent advancements have made hearing aids smaller, more comfortable and less noticeable, yet with better sound quality than ever before. In addition, there are good quality models to fit virtually any budget. If you or someone you care about suffers from hearing loss, contact an experienced audiologist to schedule a comprehensive hearing test. This quick and easy examination will determine if you have a hearing loss and how your hearing can be improved. Tracey Gale is Chief Audiologist at Trillium Hearing Centre. For more information or to schedule a no-cost, no-obligation consultation contact Tracey at 905-235-1551.

Are you a wine drinker but not yet a wine maker? Why not make 2014 the year that you give it a try? Winemaking is fun, affordable and can easily fit into the busiest schedule. And you’ll love the results! Dave McChesney, owner of Winexpert Newmarket, has been helping people make their own wine for over 17 years. Although new people discover winemaking at Winexpert all the time, many of Dave’s customers have been with him for years. They love the wide selection of wine kits available and enjoy using the state-of-the-art equipment in the store. Some people like a nice table wine (4 weeks to make), others are interested in a higher-end wine (6 or 8 weeks to make). Whatever you enjoy drinking, you’ll find just the right level of wine to make at Winexpert. Stop by the store and talk to Dave. He’ll help you decide which wines to make first. It’s been a hard winter but summer IS coming and you’ll want to have your wine cellar ready when the nice weather arrives. Fruit wines are always in fashion and Winexpert’s Island Mist is a delicious alternative to coolers. Last summer’s favourites were Raspberry Peach Sangria and White Cranberry Pinot Gris but there other flavours too to tempt you. Sound interesting? Let Dave help you get ready for summer! To find out more about winemaking, stop by Winexpert, 16995 Yonge St. (south of Eagle) or visit www.MakeWineWithDave.com

“Thank you readers, we are thrilled to be selected as a Readers’ Choice winner.” says Mary McCormack-Badinski. “We understand that parents are a child’s first and best teacher, so our programs are all designed to be supportive to parents to help them help their children learn and be inspired.” This is not a child care centre but rather a place where parents can go with their children to participate in activities. It’s also a resource centre for parents where they can borrow books and DVDs on parenting issues, as well as being a place for peer support, especially for women on maternity leave who do not have family close by and want to connect with other moms. Mary explains, “We can also help parents with referrals for issues such as preschool speech and language or behavioural issues. We know parenting is a tough job and a 24/7 one at that. We’re here to help. We offer one-on-one programs for behavioural concerns. ” The main site is at Yonge and Millard

It’s all downhill for sledder McNaughton by john cudmore
jcudmore@yrmg.com
James McNaughton has come a long way from the cattle call of a talent identification camp he and former Huron Heights football teammates Bill Thomas and Tanner Forsyth answered a little more than four years ago. Newmarket’s McNaughton will travel even farther this month when he competes at the Sochi Olympic Games as a member of Canada’s men’s bobsled program. That said, a lot of folks might question the wisdom of being part of a four-man group jumping into a bathtub-sized compartment on blades and hurtling at breakneck speed down the side of a mountain somewhere in Europe.
Not for squeamish It certainly is not a sport for the squeamish. “If you had asked me four years ago if I thought there was a onein-a-million chance of going to the Olympics in bobsled, I’d have said, ‘Never’,” said McNaughton, who earned a bachelor of arts at the University of Ottawa, where he also played linebacker on the Gee Gees varsity football team. “I really wanted to play in the CFL. “I basically went from just wanting to say I tried out for the Olympic bobsled team to getting out there and making the national team. Before that, the only idea I had was from watching Cool Runnings.”
As part of driver Justin Kripps’ crew, McNaughton, Tim Randall and former Canadian Olympic sprinter Bryan Barnett (Beijing), were in Igls, Austria for the seventh stop on the World Cup circuit last weekend. They are eighth in the season standings, one slot ahead of Canada 2. The finale in Konigssee, Germany did not change the standings, It only altered starting positions in Sochi. The top three countries are entitled to three entries in Sochi. For the crew, the pre-season goal was to qualify for the Olympics, but the season has gone even better than expected. When you consider an Olympic year brings out additional athletes challenging to make the team, it’s a recipe for jangled nerves that started long before the first race of the season. “The other two years I’ve been in the sport, it’s always been competitive. You’re always fighting for a spot, but never to this extent,” McNaughton said. “We’ve been on the chopping block all season. We need to cut loose after a season like this. “But we can be confident because we’ve put the work in and can feel we’re not too far behind without Olympic experience. “We want to be a threat at the Olympics, to be in the top 10 and maybe sneak into a podium spot.” McNaughton works — perhaps
hangs on is a more appropriate term — from the third position of the sled. Hurtling at speeds of up to 150 kilometres per hour down the course in a vessel carrying nearly 900 pounds of athlete, it’s not difficult to determine who, or what, is in charge. “I don’t see anything,” McNaughton said. “I’m so tucked down and holding on for dear life, but it’s funny, without seeing anything, you can still feel the pressure in corners, the skids. You can visualize everything. When you see it on video, you say, ‘I can’t believe I’m doing this sport’.” McNaughton, 25, has been so busy and intense in his sport that when it came time to celebrate being named to the Olympic roster, he was at a loss. “It was a weird experience when I got named to the team,” he said. “It was a dream of mine and I dedicated the past three years of my life to nothing but bobsled, but I was really disappointed in my reaction. It was like nothing’s really different. I was excited and proud, but knowing I still have to train to get better for the next race. “I’m sure when we’re walking into the stadium during opening ceremonies, it’ll hit me, but what I’m looking forward to is when we get into our cadence and that moment right before we start pushing.”

Anwar Hared is competing in Russia. The Newmarket resident will participate in the demonstration sport, bandy, ahead of the Sochi Winter Olympic Games. He is in Irkutsk, Russia, with the Somalian team competing in the bandy world championship and returns to Canada Saturday. “I’m very proud,” Anwar’s father, Aden, said. “He’s a good kid.” Anwar, 17, was born in Canada, but qualified to play for Somalia because his parents emigrated from the African nation in 1991. He attends St. Maximilian Kolbe Catholic High School and plays hockey in Aurora.

Bandy is similar to hockey, but it is played outdoors on a sheet of ice about the size of a soccer pitch. A ball is used instead of a puck and there is less body contact. Sticks are also altered from the standard hockey design. The sport is popular in northern European countries, such as Sweden, Russia and Finland.
