‘That day destroyed my life,’ grandmother tells courtroom BY RICK VANDERLINDE
Metroland Staff
It was a morning filled with painful memories, of lingering heartache and lasting grief. One after another, more than a dozen of Ashley Fogal’s family and friends stood at the front of a Barrie courtroom and spoke of the anguish her untimely death Aug. 11, 2011 affected them. The pretty 23-year-old Sharon woman was in the wrong place at the wrong time when her Kia was struck by an oncoming vehicle
driven by an impaired driver as she and a friend were heading to a concert at Casino Rama. The sorrow and anger were palpable in the packed courtroom as Ms Fogal’s killer — 29-year-old Christopher Dubreuil — listened to about 17 victim impact statements. “My heart was crushed,” Ms Fogal’s mother, Susan, said as she read a letter to her deceased daughter. “I loved being your mom. I can’t hear your laughter, I can’t hear you cry. I can’t smell your perfume. I
can’t hug you in my arms. I can’t stroke your cheek in your warm bed. You would not want me to be sad. But I ache. I hurt. I’m sad.” Mr. Dubreuil of Coburg pleaded guilty to impaired driving causing death Dec. 23. Court heard a combination of prescription drugs, alcohol, speeding and texting while driving led to the fatal crash on Rama Road. The near head-on collision occurred just a few kilometres from Ms Fogal’s destination and only a few hours after Mr. Dubreuil had
been released from an Oshawa drug rehabilitation clinic. Mr. Dubreuil was impaired on a combination of alcohol and prescription drugs, was driving 137 km/h and was texting as he approached Ms Fogal’s vehicle. Ms Fogal’s best friend, Alyssa Blight, watched in horror as she saw Mr. Dubreuil’s vehicle enter their lane. “I knew Ashley and I were in trouble. We had no chance to avoid the situation – because of a bad choice someone else made,” Ms Blight told the court before pausing to look at Dubreuil. “I have not yet come to a place in my life to forgive this man. She was stolen from us by a man who didn’t think of how his choices would affect the lives of others.” Ms Blight was able to crawl out

Ms Fogal’s 80-year-old grandmother, Elizabeth, lamented the day she lost a granddaughter who graduated on the dean’s list and “worked wonders” with handicapped children in York Region. “I hate that day,” she says of Aug. 11. “My life was destroyed that day.” The sentencing hearing continues April 17.

Leilah Mouna and Margaret Montgomery have the gift of strategic gab. The Grade 10 Pickering College students placed second overall in the junior team competition at the Fulford League Tournament debate at St. Clement’s School in Toronto this month. Leilah also finished as the top debater in the junior division. “I had an interest in the topics
they were debating,” she said. “I’ve always been interested in case studies, not necessarily sticking to an issue for a long time. That’s why I like debate. It gives you basic skills in analyzing, communication and research.” The girls debated whether or not tuition fees should be abolished at post-secondary schools in Canada and the banning of the Olympics. Margaret said a portion of her success is based on lineage. “My dad is an incredible pub-

lic speaker and brings that passion home,” Margaret said. “I wanted to carry that through.” In the senior team competition, Grade 11 students Grant Kavanagh and Ali Shourideh-Zibari finished in the middle of the pack. Meanwhile, Grade 9 student Chris Farmer participated as an observer, but managed to get in a round of debate. It’s the oldest debate league in Canada, teacher Tamer Higazi said, noting this is an unprecedented and

truly remarkable achievement for Pickering College. The tournament was also highly competitive, Grant said. “During the debate, there’s no friendly chit chat,” he said. The team is known as the Polikon Club. Prior to its rebirth in 2013, there was a 40-year debate team hiatus at the school. Polikon — a Greek term for a meeting of the minds to discuss issues for the greater good — was the name of the previous Pickering
team, so the choice has some historical context. A good debater properly researches the pros and cons of each topic, rehearses arguments and is willing to ask biting questions to opponents. “You really have to look into a topic beforehand,” Margaret said. “Most of the competitors heavily research, not just statistics, but different theories and opinions.” Pickering will host the tournament in the next school year.

Five days after the Mount Albert Fire Hall burned to the ground, East Gwillimbury has found a home for a temporary station. The site, at 5866 Doane Rd., is next to the Mount Albert water pollution control plant. York Region partnered with the town to make the facility available, which will be operational next week, thanks to the donation of vehicles and equipment being donated from various fire service and suppliers across the province, the town said. Responding to these types of unfortunate and unplanned situations requires everyone’s commitment to finding quick and appropriate solutions for meeting the needs of residents, regional chairperson Bill Fisch said. The 1460-square-foot facility was most recently used as part of a pilot project investigating sustainable and innovative wastewater treatment. Last Sunday’s blaze at the fire hall started in a 2013 Rosenbauer Centurion stainless steel pumper rescue truck, according to the Ontario Fire Marshal. The East Gwillimbury Emergency Service arrived on the scene at 8:16 a.m. Nearby residents and Fire Chief Phil Dawson said it took an additional five to 10 minutes for the supplementary forces to arrive, meaning it took somewhere between 13 and 18 minutes for the first truck to arrive after the call. By the time crews were able to get the fire under
control, the station as destroyed. The town lost six vehicles, including the pumper, and equipment in the blaze. East Gwillimbury Emergency Services owns another one of the pumpers and, as a precautionary measure, the sister truck at the Queensville Station has been taken out of service and stored off site, according to the town. “We don’t have a reason to think there is a problem with the truck, but we are going to be extremely cautious,” Mayor Virginia Hackson said. Until the temporary fire station is set up, Georgina and Whitchurch-Stouffville will help the town provide fire coverage to Mount Albert.

onsider this: Gaius Julius Caesar Augustus Germanicus — “Caligula” to his friends — was the emperor of Rome from 37 AD to 41 AD. Rumour has it that shortly after Caligula became emperor, one of his first acts was to shower people with coins to increase his popularity with the common folk. Skip ahead to 2014. Kathleen Wynne, the 25th premier of Ontario, is running around the province showering people with coins to increase her popularity with the common folk. For those of you who missed it, the premier called two more byelections for Feb. 13 — one in Niagara Falls to replace Liberal incumbent Kim Craitor and one in Thornhill to replace Progressive Conservative Peter Shurman. And while the results of these byelections won’t have much of an effect either way on whether or not we have a minority or majority government, the outcomes will be seen as a harbinger of things to come this spring. The premier says it’s just a coincidence that her government has earmarked more than $100 million for Niagara Falls — $75 million over five years to help our beleaguered wine industry and $26.2 million toward the building of a new hospital down there. I’m betting the people of Thornhill are licking their chops, waiting to see what goodies are coming their way. Then, of course, there was the recent ice storm public relations exercise. It only cost the government a few thousand $100 gift cards to distract people from just how badly the catastrophe was handled. In a Toronto Star op-ed soon after most of the province’s power was restored, the premier even had the nerve to say: “I’m not in office to play it safe — I’m in office
Stephen Skyvington to do my best to help.” Maybe it’s just me, but I’d be willing to bet the farm that most Ontarians think you’re in office, premier, to show a little leadership — not act like a delivery boy, bringing a basket of groceries to Liberal-friendly front doors while cameras are rolling. After all, that’s why you were elected. Except you weren’t elected, were you? And that’s part of the problem. As for Andrea Horwath and the NDP — well, they’re not much better. “Whether it’s health care, whether it’s jobs, whether it’s making ends meet, I think the people of Niagara Falls know that this byelection is going to be about a number of different issues,” the New Democrat leader said. “The throwing around of a little bit of money is not unexpected. It’s the way Liberals do things.” This from the person and the party that has twice propped up the Liberals by choosing not to vote against the last two budgets. Apparently, “throwing around a little bit of money” is OK in their eyes. We can’t afford to continue to be so damn gullible. Stephen Skyvington is the President of PoliTrain Inc. Re: Main street has vast history; let’s fight to keep it, Sunday Forum by Robert Buchan, Feb. 2. Newmarket’s old downtown does have a history worth preserving in photographs, videos, in museum displays and facades for new buildings. The history should be taught in local schools. Children should be taught the history and respect it, but they should not need to live in the past. The past is over and gone. We have a responsibility to children to provide a future and move toward it. Teach the past, but look to the future with an eye to building a place where children can grow, thrive, work, play and live. Growth and expansion are required for the future or we face remaining a bedroom community. Preserving the downtown to remember a local history is of little value to a growing and prosperous future. There are limited attractions to draw money-spending people or businesses downtown. Downtown residents are not a significant portion of the town and more residents are

required to stimulate more businesses. Not long ago, the downtown was a major shopping area and the Newmarket Plaza was a major plaza. Both drew people from the many surrounding areas. That is not the case now and it will not come back by standing still and preserving what was. Upper Canada Mall is a major shopping area that now draws people, but it faces strong competition from nearby shopping centres. When Yorkdale mall opened, it drew people away from the Newmarket plaza and nearby shopping centres may well draw clients from Upper Canada Mall. Competition motivates change. The downtown needs to change to a place where people want to go to live, play, work and do business. Downtown remaining as it is or putting some lipstick on it will do little to improve the character or economy of the area. It is nice to remember and respect the past, but we need to live for today and build for the future. The downtown needs to grow significantly in population to attract business.

York Region’s senior population to double by 2031 Providing services for aging population biggest challenge, region says BY SEAN PEARCE
spearce@yrmg.com
There’s no doubt about it: York Region is getting older. The number of senior citizens residing in the region is expected to more than double by 2031. That means in excess of 310,000 people, or about one in five, will be over age 65 by that time. Just two years from now, seniors will outnumber youths aged 15 to 24. That said, all age groups will continue to grow in the years ahead, explained Lisa Gonsalves a director in the region’s strategies and partnerships branch, it’s just that more people will be joining the ranks of seniors than any other age group. “One of the challenges will be continuing to provide services for all of our age groups,” she said, adding it will be important for all levels of government to balance the needs at both ends of the age spectrum.
Even those aged 65 and older will have very different needs depending upon which generation they belong to, she added. The Baby Boomers, those currently between ages 45 and 64, will likely change how we think about seniors, Ms Gonsalves said. The statistics suggest the boomers will be better off financially than their parents and grandparents were and likely more active as well perhaps continuing or returning to work, furthering their educations or volunteering in the community to share their knowledge and experiences, she said. The latter pursuit will be especially important in order to maintain our social fabric, she added. You can also expect to see many more seniors electing to age in place, she noted. “One thing about the boomers is that they’ve changed every stage of life they’ve been apart of,” Ms Gonsalves said. “We don’t expect this to be any different.” The seniors of tomorrow will likely be healthier than their predecessors and live longer with the average life expectancy being 82.2 years for men and 85.8 years for women.
York Region’s older citizens face significant challenges in years to come, region says. In contrast, the region’s older seniors, those 75 and older, may face some significant challenges in the years to come. Some individuals in this category may still be paying down a mortgage and/or have lower

incomes, which could result in difficulties in securing suitable housing for their needs, Ms Gonsalves said. Other concerns for older seniors include declining health, a greater risk for mental health
issues and an increased need for care and services, she explained. The reality is the looming shift in demographics will impact every aspect of how the region delivers its services, Ms Gonsalves said. For example, York Region Transit’s Mobility Plus service may well have to re-evaluate its operations as the population ages, she said, while the nine local-tier municipalities will likely have to re-tool their services also. Ms Gonsalves recently presented regional council with an update on the status of the work on York’s seniors strategy and provided a draft copy of the profile on baby boomers and seniors in the area. Council approved the proposed research and consultation activities needed to develop the strategy. Over the next six months or so, regional staff will complete its research with a goal of reporting back to council with a draft strategic framework for approval in September. Between October and July 2015 the task will be to develop strategic priorities and actions. September 2015 has been earmarked as the month to present the draft seniors strategy to regional council for endorsement.

After a distinguished 38-year career in public education, the past four as York Region District School Board director of education, Ken Thurston will retire July 31. The respected educator and administrator made his announcement at Tuesday’s board meeting. “I am proud of the achievements I have had the good fortune to be involved in over the past four years,” said Mr. Thurston, who will be 61 at retirement. “The board’s students, staff, parents and community partners have always demonstrated passion, commitment and innovative thinking, which I know will continue to benefit York Region and public education, as a whole.” Since his appointment as director in January 2010, Mr. Thurston added to his legacy. Some of his achievements include establishing the director’s annual plan, enhanced student, parent and community engagement and more focus on employee relations. A highlight among his numerous accomplishments is shifting education at the board toward student achievement and well-being, he said. “We focused on the whole child, a focus on self confidence and physical well-being,” he said. “We also paid great attention to children’s mental health and broadened that to staff and community.” Mr. Thurston said he is proud of his work to broaden and enhance the board’s equity and inclusivity initiatives. His contribution to the board’s revised mission, vision and values statements and new slogan, unveiled last week, is also a source of professional pride, he said.
“We had a statement since the 1990s and it served us well, but the time was right to reframe, renew and capture who we are,” he said. In 2008, Mr. Thurston was made a fellow of the Ontario Teachers’ Federation, which is rare for non-union members and, in that same year, received a Distinguished Leadership Award from the Ontario Public Supervisory Officials’ Association. Board chairperson Anna DeBartolo lauded the outgoing director. “Ken Thurston’s leadership has been instrumental to our board’s many successes,” she said. “As director of education, Ken has implemented a strategic vision focused on delivering high-quality, inclusive education. “We’re proud of the work he has done and wish him well in his forthcoming retirement.” Mr. Thurston said he will not be involved in the process to find his successor. Rather, that task will be entrusted to the elected trustees, he said. The man responsible for more than 121,000 students in 171 elementary schools and 31 secondary schools in Ontario’s thirdlargest school district remains confident and realistic. “There’s still lots of work to be done as we evolve as a society and as York Region grows,” he said. “We have to continue to recreate, reimagine and adapt to changing realities.” He said he has no concrete plans for retirement beyond spending more time with family and friends. “I hope to enjoy some pursuits I’ve put on the back burner,” he said. “At this point, I’m pretty open.”

Entrepreneur shortlisted for business leadership competition BY BREA BARTHOLET
bbartholet@yrmg.com
Mike Sorrenti has come a long way from daydreaming about what it would be like to expand his creativity into something more meaningful. In fact, he is one of three finalists chosen for the FutureShifters video contest — an online challenge for advancing entrepreneurs to gain access to this year’s QuantumShift event May 4 to 9 at the Ivey Spencer Leadership Centre in London, ON.
The budding entrepreneur runs a business out of Aurora known as Game Pill. The rigorous five-day experience will allow the winning entrepreneur, who is determined solely by online votes, to mingle with CEOs whose businesses are past the start-up level. Mr Sorrenti hopes he will be given the opportunity to learn from the many professionals who will be in attendance. But to attend the prestigious program, Mr. Sorrenti must first receive the most votes of all three contenders. The budding entrepreneur runs a business out of Aurora known as Game Pill. It’s a company that creates interactive entertainment for broadcasters, brands, producers and agencies.
To view and vote for Mr. Sorrenti’s video, visit iframe-3622242.strutta.com/entries For more information about Game Pill, visit gamepill.com Game Pill has evolved and developed from multiple ideas generated through Mr. Sorrenti during a number of years. “I would doodle a lot when I was younger because it was a creative outlet for me,” he said. “I had big dreams to work in the entertainment industry and, eventually, I was able to work for Warner Brothers for a while, but, in the end, it wasn’t creative enough for me.” It was at that time he decided to start his own business with nothing but a borrowed computer and small spare room. “I grew the business from nothing. Now I have an office and employees and a lot of clients such as Nickelodeon and Fisher Price.” One of Game Pill’s most recent accomplishments involves the creation of a game app for Animal Plant called “Tanked Aquarium,” based on the hit Animal Planet series. With a tremendous amount of work on his plate, Mr. Sorrenti says winning the contest would get his business up to where it needs to be. “We’re not doing work, we’re helping people. My goal in life is to make people happy.” Mr. Sorrenti submitted his video about his expanding business for the contest more than a month ago, which was then viewed by judges and chosen as finalist in late January. Votes to determine a winner will be accepted until today at 11:59 p.m.
Still time to enter story contest Young adults are being challenged to put pen to paper. The Canadian Federation of University Women Aurora-Newmarket, along with The Era and The Banner, encourage writers 22 years and younger to submit a 750-word short story that begins with the sentence, “I couldn’t believe it really happened.” Susan Lennard, one of the co-chairpersons of the contest committee, explains the contest, now in its fourth year, is dedicated to promoting learning and literacy. She said young writers from York Region and Bradford West Gwillimbury are encouraged to be creative for a chance to win one of three cash prizes of $200, $200 and $400.
The winner’s short story will also be published in The Era and The Banner and posted on the federation’s website. Submissions will be reviewed by members of the federation who will select the top 10 finalists. The winners will be selected from the top 10 by three judges, including the federation president, a representative from the newspapers and a professional author. There’s a $5 fee to enter. The deadline is Feb. 14. The winner and two runners-up will be announced in April. The top 10 finalists will be invited to a celebration reception. Twelve “Best New” category winners were eligible for the top honours of being either the “Canadian Car of the Year” or the “Canadian Utility Vehicle of the Year” after being announced on December 3rd. Mazda won three of the “Best New” categories while the General Motors and Kia Canada all garnered double wins. Other category winners were from Lexus, Infiniti, and MercedesBenz.
The three (3) finalists for Canadian Car of the Year and Canadian SUV/CUV of the year are as follows:

Many “Car of the Year” awards tend to be a popularity contest based on the subjective opinions of a few people. The Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC) has a different approach: one based on objective and comparative evaluations, involving back-to-back testing that generates more than 40,000 data points as part of the voting process.
The results of that secret-ballot process, compiled by the international accounting firm of KPMG, will be revealed on Press Preview Day (Thursday, February 13th) with the announcement of the 2014 “Canadian Car of the Year” and “Canadian Utility Vehicle of the Year”.

BOREALIS NATUROPATHIC HEALTH CENTRE
CHAMPAGNE CLEANERS
Dr. Janice Shouldice, N.D., believes a sound knowledge of the body and ability to blend that science with compassion and caring is the major reason Era and Banner readers chose Borealis Naturopathic Health Centre for a Reader’s Choice Award. “We view the individual as a whole, where symptoms of disease are seen as warning signals of improper functioning and unfavourable lifestyle habits,” says Janice, a Naturopathic Doctor and Registered Nutritional Consultant. “Our mission is to help people of all ages address their health concerns and achieve optimal health and well-being.” Borealis, a multidisciplinary medical centre with a professional staff of four Naturopathic Doctors, a doctor of Traditional Chinese Medicine, two Homeopathic Doctors and a Registered Massage Therapist, has quietly built a reputation for its organic, holistic and integrated approach to health concerns and disease prevention. Patients at Borealis are wholly involved in their individualized health programs and learn to make effective, educated self-care decisions to prevent future health problems. A graduate of the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine in 1999, Janice also served on the Complaints Resolution Committee of the Board of Drugless Therapy, which regulates Naturopaths in Ontario. The Borealis Naturopathic Health Centre has a new location at 615 Davis Drive #302, across from the hospital. Parking is free for their patients, and they can be reached by calling 905-830-1236. Record number of soccer stars signing with U.S. schools BY MICHAEL HAYAKAWA
mhayakawa@yrmg.com
To have one or a couple of players on one team earn athletic scholarships in the United States in one season is generally considered a good accomplishment. But the Glen Shields FC 96 girls team raised the bar when 14 team members confirmed yesterday their intentions to attend U.S. universities on soccer scholarships this fall. Among that group included: forward Ocean Parr (University of South Florida); goalkeeper Devon Kerr (Ohio State University); defender Victoria Pickett (University of Wisconsin); defender Daniella Dell’Aquila (University of St. Thomas at Houston); defender Jordane Cavery (Louisiana State University); defender Kendra Prince (Oakland University); midfielder Emma Pozzulo (University of Pittsburgh); midfielder Ashley Moreira (University of Pittsburgh); forward Amy Rowe (University of Louisiana-Monroe); forward Michaela DiCianna (Duquesne University); forward Taylor Pryce (University of Pittsburgh); forward Simone Wark (University of South Carolina); forward Veronica Bosco (University of Memphis) and forward Cassidy Kunicyn (University of LouisianaMonroe). Megan Simmons, who joined the Glen Shields 96 club this season, already received a scholarship to attend the University of Kentucky. In addition, five other team
members turned down U.S. scholarship offers and elected to study and play at Canadian universities. Those included: Patris Alves, who is deciding between Queen’s University or the University of Western Ontario; Emily Goldasic (Ryerson); Djana Solomon (Wilfrid Laurier University), Maddie Tooke (undecided) and Gabriella Kim (undecided). The club regularly produces Division 1 calibre players, said David Benning, Glen Shields Futbol Club director of player development and head coach of the FC 96 girls team. “But this was the most from any one team in a single year with our club,” he added. “My goal was to make sure 11 (players) accepted to the right school, but for all to have an offer,” he said. While it might be easy to assume the Glen Shields club simply recruited the best players in the Greater Toronto Area for its 96 team, Benning insisted such wasn’t the case. Rather, it stemmed from the club’s long-term developmental philosophy, which places a strong emphasis in identifying, and grooming, high-skilled players from a young age. It was based on an itinerary Benning had a large influence in creating, since serving as the club’s first full-time technical director from 1995 to 2003 before overseeing their program and serving as a national staff coach with the Cana-

Newmarket’s Ocean Parr signed Wednesday with the University of South Florida in Tampa. dian Soccer Association for the last 10 years. “Anyone can identify a good or bad player, but only a few can develop the potential of a bad player into a good player because they understand how to. At the Glen Shields Futbol Club we understand and have a track record to prove it”, Benning said. He was quick to share credit with the club’s coaches, most of whom have been involved in their
craft at various levels, ranging from the collegiate ranks in the United States and Canada, to the provincial and national stream. The players, too, were a highly motivated group. “The players all possessed the same mindset and worked extremely hard for one another in a team environment, understanding their personal success relied on others to be successful as well.” The Glen Shields club has devel-

oped relationships with several U.S. colleges and universities “The relationships we have with these coaches is based on a personal understanding and trust of developing the players technically and tactically, physically and emotionally for the challenges of university,” he said. “We, as a staff, who have played in the NCAA or CIS, provided instruction on how to develop a profile, which would be used to market the players to be noticed. “We found the right school for each player, based on a number of factors. Once the girls were down to three to five choices, we, as a club, assisted them and their parents how to negotiate full student athletic soccer scholarships.” While quick to credit the club and players, Benning also praised the support they have received off the field from teachers who offered the players assistance in writing SAT entrance exams and in developing good study habits. He also said a good deal of what they have accomplished would not have been possible were it not for the support received from the community in sponsoring the club when they attended numerous college showcase events, south of the border. “Without these opportunities, as good as the talent of this team was, they would never have been seen,” acknowledged Benning. The Glen Shields club offers both recreational and competitive programs for youth four to 21.

Jeanne will be sadly missed by her dog Siree. Jeanne never took no for an answer and never said it. She was as strong as nails, but wore her heart on her sleeve.... a true peacekeeper. Her greatest love was her family and friends and never wanted to let either of them down. She also loved animals, wild or tamed and loved to be outdoor with Mother Nature. Jeanne was an active member of the Boy Scouts of Canada for over 35 years and never missed a major event. A strong supporter of youth made her an amazing mother, not only to Robert and Jeffery, but to all of their friends. When she was diagnosed with cancer over 20 years ago, Jeanne beat all odds and became a survivor. Truly an amazing woman of strength, integrity, love and compassion. Jeanne, Mom, Sis, Grandma, we miss you already. Please contact the family for further information. In lieu of flowers please send all donations to the Canadian Cancer Society. 2 Corinthians 5:8 We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be, absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.
