You may think you know what opera is: boring, pretentious, a lady in a hat with horns singing in a language you don’t understand. Ray Brazeau and Shoshana Friedman would like you to experience their kind of opera. Next week, the Newmarket couple brings their unique theatrical production to Richmond Hill, featuring some of the world’s most loved classical songs, synchronized to special lighting, pyrotechnics and atmospheric effects. It’s a case of two very different worlds colliding and the effect is spectacular — sort of like the way this Newmarket couple came together in the first place. He was a professional pyrotechnician who worked with rock stars such as the Rolling Stones, Beyonce and Drake. She was a singer, a soprano in the opera. They met online and the sparks began to fly. Literally. He had never been to an opera. She thought his job was “amazingly cool”. He was producing a Canada Day fireworks show in Mississauga, an indoors one, and had been asked to include music. They decided to include opera. “We just kind of threw this thing together,” Mr. Brazeau says. “We put on a really short show and it went really well. We got three standing ovations that night and it was sold out. There was something magical there. It took us by surprise.” “There were people in the audience who’d never set foot in an opera house who were on their feet and they really liked it because it became fun, it became accessible. It wasn’t something that was in a foreign language that was 2-1/2 hours long,” Ms Friedman adds. They were told there was nothing like it anywhere in the world. They figured they were on to something and, so, last year, they made a bigger, better show in Richmond Hill and they were blown away by the response. They had warned performers that, with children in the audience, there may be giggles and running around “but just ignore them and do your thing. Much to our surprise,” Mr. Brazeau says, “you could have heard a pin drop. The kids, their eyes were this big!” By end of night, the audience was singing. “We decided to do the karaoke thing with the bouncing ball because after the second show it was like, this is un-frickin’-believable, they’re singing along! When have you ever heard that happening at an opera?” At the same time, Ms Friedman says, they’ve insisted on maintaining the integrity of the music. “We were not going to pop it up or rock it up.

This was going to be opera as it was meant to be sung in its original format with orchestral backing but... it’s a theatrical presentation,” she says. The pyro is the hook. There is dry ice and firework geysers but, at the same time, an education component that helps the audience understand what opera is, its rich history and meaning. They view this as a chance to reach out to younger audiences, show them an art form that has struggled of late. There is not a lot of opportunity available to classical singers in Canada, Ms Friedman says. Opera Hamilton just announced it is closing, and Opera Kitchener recently closed. “I’m not an aficionado of classical music,” Mr. Brazeau says. “I’m Rolling Stones and AC/

DC all the way. But classical music is a part of our culture and we don’t even know it.” Last year’s show in Richmond Hill brought eight standing ovations. Of all the events and show’s he has created — including the largest municipal Canada Day fireworks display in Canada at Richmond Green — Mr. Brazeau said he has never seen an audience respond so enthusiastically. This year’s tour kicks off Jan. 23 and 24 at the Richmond Hill Centre for the Performing Arts. It then moves to Burlington Feb. 8, Ottawa Feb. 14, Guelph April 25 and Windsor May 17. For this Newmarket couple, it has become a passion and a calling. Ms Friedman was diagnosed with breast cancer last year. She has been through the wringer, but it has been, she says, life-altering. She realized life is short. Everything can change in a flash. She established her own children’s program in York Region, Broadway North Youth Theatre, to spread her love for opera. And now, with a clean bill of health, she says she is moving forward with both dreams. Mr. Brazeau, too, is following his. “With all the stuff that’s going on in the world, for the short time that we’re doing a fireworks display, there’s no arguing, no fighting, people become children again.They just stop what they’re doing and for that period of time, all you’re doing is making people happy. For me to become part of that is just awesome.”

A preliminary deal that will see Desjardins Group purchase State Farm Canada won’t affect staffing or operations at State Farm’s Aurora head office, company spokesperson John Bordignon said. State Farm’s property, casualty and life insurance, mutual fund, loan and living benefits sectors have been preliminarily purchased by Desjardins. The agreement includes the Aurora office, which employs about 1,300 people. Expect the transaction to close in January 2015, subject to approval from regulators and compliance with customary closing conditions. “This combination creates a leading platform with new opportunities for growth and success for our employees, agents and customers,” State Farm CEO Edward Rust Jr. said in a media release. Following the closing, Desjardins will operate the newly acquired branches under the State Farm brand for an agreed licence period. As a result of the transaction, Desjardins will become the second largest property and casualty insurance provider in Canada, with annual gross written premiums of about $3.9 billion. Desjardins is also the fourth largest life and health insurer in Canada. “This acquisition will allow Desjardins to develop a broader, multi-channel distribution network across the country, while continuing to meet the needs of State Farm’s Canadian client base,” Desjardins CEO Monique Leroux said in a media release.

Dr. Bob is stepping away from his family practice. After 44 years of serving the Aurora community, general practitioner Dr. Robert Williams is retiring at the end of July. He is 69 years old and serves more than 1,500 patients, including several generations of families. “They don’t want me to leave; it’s hard,” he said in the confines of his office. “I have a patient that’s going to have her second baby. I looked after her grandmother and mother, delivered (her) and now I’m looking after her kids. I should be 100 (years old).” Aurora has changed significantly since he first came to the area from Toronto in 1970. Only nine doctors served the town’s population of a few thousand people back then. Doctors also did house calls and saw fewer patients in an office setting. Now, a majority of work is done within the office.

“You saw everybody in the town,” Dr. Williams said. “I got called in the night. I did emergencies, nursing homes, everything. It was truly a general practice.” He initially planned to enter the plastic surgery field, before giving general practice a try. It didn’t take long to fall in love with GP, given the positive connections often developed with patients. “You keep on seeing patients,” he said. “If you get your gall bladder out, you don’t see that surgeon again, but I get to see the whole progression.” He worked as the chief of general practice and emergency at Newmarket’s York County Hospital — now Southlake Regional Health Centre — in the late 1970s. “My style of practice is going out the window,” Dr. Williams said. “It’s not bad, just different, but you got to learn how the hospital worked.” Retirement hardly means Dr. Williams is stepping away from medicine entirely. He plans to keep a medical licence and will take educational courses.

The private waste and recycling company responsible for picking up your trash may be the one left at the curb if politicians decide the level of service hasn’t been up to par. But if penalties are levelled against the company for not meeting contractual obligations, residents won’t see direct compensation. Apologies and assurances from Green For Life Environmental Corp.’s district manager Craig Nelson for delays in garbage and recycling pickup in recent weeks may not be enough to stave off penalties or a cancellation of the private company’s contract with the northern six municipalities. The mayors and CAOs of Georgina, East Gwillimbury, Whitchurch-Stouffille, Newmarket, Aurora and King met Thursday to take a closer look at the contract and pool their collective concerns. Excuses issued on behalf of the company — including malfunctioning trucks and decreased staff due to the weather — didn’t carry much weight with Georgina Mayor Rob Grossi. “Our constituents have great compassion for outside workers and the kind of work they do on a daily basis … and this has nothing to do with their performance of their duties on those kind of days,” he said during a review of the matter at council Wednesday. “To try to use that as a crutch relative to these discussions and the contract is not acceptable,” he added. The mayors and CAOs will have to make decisions moving forward regarding penalties, restitution and a potential cancellation

of the company’s contract if it is determined GFL has not lived up to its terms. “They have broken many of the conditions of the contract and the ball is now in our court,” Mr. Grossi said, adding GFL has been playing a “juggling game” regarding service capability. The review by council follows action by neighbouring municipalities, where special meetings were called by councils in Aurora, Newmarket and Whitchurch-Stouffville after residents flooded customer service departments with complaints their garbage wasn’t picked up. GFL representatives apologized for the recent service delays earlier in the week at Newmarket council and told members it had taken several steps to address the issues, such as hiring several mechanics and placing more efficient collection trucks in its fleet. Waste collection in Georgina, however, wasn’t back on schedule as promised for this week, despite assurances from GFL, Ward 3 Councillor Dave Szollosy said. While financial penalties may be imposed against GFL, those won’t translate to any direct reimbursement to residents, said CAO Winanne Grant, in response to Ward 1 Councillor Phil Craig, who asked if residents would receive a reduction in property taxes or financial compensation. Financial compensation would be incorporated in the overall tax levy, Ms Grant said. Three-term school board trustee Loralea Carruthers has been nominated as the Ontario Liberal candidate for York-Simcoe. Peterson seeks federal nod A familiar face hopes to represent the Liberal Party locally in the next federal election. There’s a reason why Canadian travel so costly

Get to root causes of storm woes

or those returning home after the holidays, here’s a question you might have pondered: Why does it cost so much to travel? Answer: government policy. Consider two examples, starting first with taxi fares. Across Canada, cities limit the number of taxi licences available. This, we are told, allows drivers to make a decent living and consumers to know the cabs they step into are safe. Nonsense. An open market in taxicabs, where anyone or any company that wants a licence can get one (subject to reasonable safety requirements of course), would not only reduce fares, but wouldn’t automatically mean drivers make less. Those who choose to drive solo or form co-ops or start a smaller cab company, might well make more money even while passenger fares were reduced. When cities limit the number of taxi licences, the price of such licences increases to levels that only a select few can afford. In turn, a high price for a taxi licence means drivers are forced to pay substantial rents to the licence owners. The last time I talked to a cab driver about his costs, drivers paid several hundred dollars per week (one fellow paid close to $400 weekly) to the cab company, plus fuel, for the privilege of driving a taxi. In other words, cut out the middlemen and drivers could make more even as fares are reduced for the public. As for quality and safety, a competitive taxicab market need not sacrifice security. Drivers and their vehicles could still be licenced and regulated by cities with requirements that address the driver’s character, safety of the vehicle and so on. That’s one example of how governments artificially inflate travel costs. Here’s another: airline fares. In 2012, I compared European countries, Canada and the United States on kilometre-for-kilometre

Mark Milke flights costs. I compared five return domestic flights of roughly similar kilometres. The five European tickets cost $689.68 with taxes and fees at 36 per cent of the total fare price; the U.S. total was $841.10 with taxes and fees at 16 per cent; the Canadian five fares cost $1,815.14, including taxes and fees at 28 per cent. Given that taxes and fees are higher in Europe, there must be another factor to help explain the lower European fares: competition. Europe’s pro-consumer ticket prices exist because European airlines and even airports have fiercely competed for passengers ever since the European Union air travel market was opened up to full competition in 1997. Any carrier from any member country can pick up and drop off passengers anywhere, regardless of the airline’s home country. That policy, known as “cabotage” or open skies, is in distinct contrast to North America, where U.S. and Canadian governments still prohibit “foreign-owned” airlines from offering wholly domestic flights in our markets. If governments embraced competition more robustly, consumers would have nothing to lose but their overpriced taxi fares and high-priced airline tickets. Will solutions in the wake of the ice storm come forth now from PowerStream and city hall or will we still want to blame the trees for their growth and digress from the “lack of regular trimming” root cause? any of the warming centres at their peak. No, building an arena of 20,000 capacity would not have solved the problem as suggested by one aspiring politician on Facebook: “Do you recall some people made fun during arena debates, emergency situation would never arise where an arena could be used as an emergency shelter. This ice storm proves we definitely could have used an arena.” Just imagine, with an arena, the couple hundred residents coming in can be kept entertained with the Taste of Arctic festival while they wait out the emergency. They will enjoy popsicles and maple syrup made nearby and the arena owners would be compensated by the city for providing the refreshments and shelter. In addition, they can report four or five extra events on their yearly operations report to make it more than 39 events for the year.

Still time to enter story contest Young adults are being challenged to put pen to paper. The Canadian Federation of University Women Aurora-Newmarket, along with The Era and The Banner, encourage writers 22 years and younger to submit a 750-word short story that begins with the sentence, “I couldn’t believe it really happened.” Susan Lennard, one of the co-chairpersons of the contest committee, explains the contest, now in its fourth year, is dedicated to promoting learning and literacy. She said young writers across York Region and Bradford West Gwillimbury are encouraged to be creative for a chance to win one of three cash prizes of $200, $200 and $400. The winner’s short story will also be published in the Era and the Banner and posted on the federation’s website. Submissions will be reviewed by members of the federation who will select the top 10 finalists. The winners will be selected from the top 10 by three judges, including the federation president, a representative from the newspapers and a professional author. Fireplaces provide warmth, comfort

Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a wonderful and relaxing holiday season. I found the “holidays” more exhausting than usual with the power outage kicking our schedule into chaos for several days and then into overdrive for several additional days when the lights came on in our home before our extended family’s homes, designating us the de facto and unexpected hosts for Christmas dinner. As expected, during the power outage we all huddled in the family room around the fireplace to keep our fingers and toes warm during some very cold days. As such, I thought it appropriate to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the fireplace options available to homeowners when the lights go out. A wood-burning fireplace is my favourite, but having one in my own home probably makes me biased. From a purely aesthetic perspective, I love the ambiance and glow it emits. During the colder months, particularly the holidays, it lends an old world charm to our home. I love the smells and the sounds it produces and it reminds me of family and brings me comfort. That said, it’s messy. But for me, the benefits of having this type of fireplace far outweigh having to scoop out the firebox on

Know that if you’re ordering wood, logs need time to dry out before using, so plan ahead and order your wood in the summer or early fall to give it time to dry. If you have space limitations, you may want to consider an ethanol fireplace, which, in its smallest form, can be hung on a wall like a piece of art. This type of fireplace generates some heat (not as much as a gas fireplace) but requires no venting. Liquid ethanol, which is a natural plant-derived combustible, is poured into a container in the fireplace and burns clean, producing carbon dioxide and water steam. The St. Maximilian Kolbe Mustangs senior boys hockey team is a perfect 10. The trick moving forward is extending a successful regular season run into the playoffs. The Mustangs wrapped up the York Region Athletic Association regular season’s only spotless record with their 10th win in as many games Thursday afternoon — a 6-1 victory over the Dr. J.M. Denison Huskies. The Mustangs had already clinched the North Division title before the game, but putting the finishing touches on the regular season was a hard target. “We’ve worked hard all season,” Mustangs head coach Adriano Crupi said. “It’s tough to put up the numbers we’ve put up. Our goal differential has been ridiculous.” The Mustangs will return from exams in early February to an opening-round playoff bye before seeking to claim a YRAA crown and the region’s triple-A berth for OFSAA championships in March. They will hold the top seed in the region based on their record. The landscape may look familiar for the Mustangs who, as juniors two years ago, put together an undefeated season in York Region play, which ended with a league championship. “We feel really good about it and proud,” said Mustangs captain Spencer Green, who chipped in with a goal in Thursday’s win. “Some years we’ve not been as serious, but since a lot of us graduate, we wanted to take a run at OFSAA this season.” The Huskies stayed within range of the
