Report unearths cemetery woes Newmarket in urgent need of new land for burials

ack in 1867, the year of Confederation, when residents would take a horse and buggy to the outskirts of their small town to bury a loved one, it must have seemed like the 18 acres of the new Newmarket Cemetery would last forever. But on this chilly spring day as a funeral procession arrives, cemetery board secretary Dave Evans wonders if there will be enough time to find land, get approvals in place and develop a new graveyard before the existing cemetery on Main Street North runs out of room. The cemetery is 10 years or so away from not being able to service any more casket burials, although it would still be able to accept cremation interments, said Evans, a soft-spoken man with a quiet sense of humour. “In terms of our planning, (it is a growing concern) because it

takes 10 to 15 years to be able to buy a site and get all the approvals and open it…We’re very close if we can’t do something and get ourselves started,” he said. “We’re infilling areas. By just leaving the ring road and taking out the smaller roads and taking out some old pathways where horse and buggies went through, if we maximize it, if we don’t get a plague, (we can extend the life of the cemetery as much as possible). More people are going to cremation, so that makes it longer.” Newmarket tops the list of York Region municipalities in

Champions of character honoured for giving back You helped raise funds for local charity runs

princely wave from a 10-year-old hero, plus a group “selfie” of longstanding champions of character were poignant moments at the 10th annual York Region Character Community Awards in Richmond Hill last Friday. Some 15 individuals, schools, groups and business leaders across York Region were in the spotlight at the Richmond Hill Centre for the Performing Arts for demonstrating exemplary character attributes such as compassion, perseverance, respect, honesty and optimism. Two special honourees this year are the Donald Cousens Awards winner, Kathleen Redmond of East Gwillimbury, and the Community Hero winner, Maddox Blair-Hartwick, age 10, of Georgina. Redmond is a past Character Community Foundation member and last year helped develop and deliver a series of workshops, Creating a Character Culture, to help organizations, businesses, cultural groups and charities grow healthy, effective workplaces.

BRIEFLY Clock tower public meeting Monday Time is ticking down until a public meeting for the Main Street clock tower. The meeting will take place at Newmarket town hall, 395 Mulock Dr., from 7 to 9 p.m. May 9. The zoning bylaw amendment calls for the construction of a 165-unit, sevenstorey apartment unit complex near the Main and Park Avenue intersection. If the proposal were constructed as presented, it would include five ground-floor retail commercial units fronting Main.

Learn more about prostate cancer Newmarket’s prostate cancer support group wants to help you better understand the disease. If you have recently been diagnosed with prostate cancer, are currently exploring treatment options or dealing with related side effects, or have survived the battle and want to share your experience, the local group will give you a safe place to discuss the disease. The group meets on the third Thursday of each month, except July and August. At most meetings, a prominent member of the medical profession or another person with knowledge of cancer speaks on some phase of detection, diagnosis, staging, treatment or related topics. Between 15 and 40 people usually attend.

Help keep Newmarket ‘green and clean’ this spring There are a few ways you can help keep Newmarket sparkling in the coming weeks. Town staff has planned several environmentally friendly initiatives for the municipality this spring. On Saturday (May 7), the Community Clean-Up and Family Fun Day begins at 8:30 a.m. Sign up at the Recreation Youth Centre & Sk8 Park, 56 Charles St., and receive gloves, garbage bags and a map. The cleanup runs from 9 a.m. to noon. Following the clean up, volunteers are invited to enjoy a complimentary barbecue lunch, music and family friendly activities until 4 p.m. Residents are also invited to provide feedback on the draft Community Energy Plan. The plan proposes initiatives aimed at developing energy-efficient buildings, neighbourhoods and transportation systems. It also focuses on the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in Newmarket. The project will help create a sustainable community whose energy future is efficient, secure, reliable and environmentally progressive.

Yard waste collection underway The pickup will continue on a bi-weekly basis until November. Remember to bundle branches separately and place plant trimmings and weeds into paper yard waste bags or open-top garbage cans marked ‘yard waste’. Bags filled with dirt cannot be collected due to weight restrictions. Also, keep an eye out for yellow fish painted on or by Newmarket’s sewer grates beginning this spring. The town and Trout Unlimited Canada will team up to raise awareness about the dangers of disposing harmful materials into storm sewers. Fertilizer, soap, paint or other household hazardous waste materials that goes untreated into our storm sewers can contaminate our local waterways.

Kick clutter to curb this spring with these tips Clutter can be more than a household annoyance; it can exact a toll on your mental and physical health BY TERESA LATCHFORD

hat seemingly harmless pile of mail at the front door or the unorganized bedroom closet bursting at the seams may be having a negative impact on your health. A kitchen with cluttered countertops can make cooking healthy meals seem like a chore and lead you to turn to unhealthier options such as fast food. Crammed closets can cause stress during the morning rush to be on time for work. And coming home to a less than organized space can be overwhelming and draining. That’s all according to Kathy Russell, a professional organizer and owner of York Region-based Butler Girl Lifestyle Solutions. “We live in a society obsessed with stuff and when it starts piling up it can lead to feeling overwhelmed and even depression,” she said. “It has a ripple effect, not only impacting your mental heath, but also your physical health.” It can strain a relationship when one partner is neat and the other isn’t and hinder a person’s social life because they will avoid having their friends and family over due to embarrassment. “Most people just try to ignore it or close the door, but that doesn’t really address the problem since your brain still knows it’s there,” she said. “People who realize it needs to be dealt with usually feel overwhelmed and don’t really know where to start.”

The first step is realizing clutter is a habit and that doing a clean sweep and utilizing organizing solutions is a lifestyle change, much like when an individual decides to eat healthier rather than using a quick fix diet. “It takes about 21 days to change your behaviour and have it stick,” Russell said. “Take note of your everyday steps and find a solution.” For example, if you pick up the newspapers and drop them inside the front door everyday and feel overwhelmed when it comes time to recycle them, it might be a good idea to put the recycling bin for paper at the front entrance. “People also try to take on too much at one time, get overwhelmed and then give up,” she explained. She recommends starting small. For example, schedule 10 minutes of your day, maybe in the evenings, to tackle a small project such as your cutlery drawer. Something that takes only 10 or 15 minutes can give one a great sense of accomplishment and fuel them to do more. When taking on larger projects, use the three-pile rule when sorting: one pile for garbage, one pile to keep and one to recycle or donate. Her clients often speak of feeling re-energized, less stressed and enjoy their homes more when the clutter has been cleared and/or reorganized into a functional space.

Take on one drawer or cupboard at a time, tossing multiples and paring down. There are only four burners on a stove, so why does a person need 10 pots? Make the kitchen functional: plates stored above the dishwasher to make them easier to put away and coffee mugs stored over the coffee maker. Keep only essential items on the counter top so you don’t have to clean before you prep food.

Make it a rule to remove an item from your closet when you purchase something new. Keep your summer and winter clothes separated so you only need to sift through half of your wardrobe. People only wear 20 per cent of the clothing they own 80 per cent of the time so purge what you don’t wear often. Enlist the aid of a friend, for support and to be the voice of reason when you have difficulty throwing something away.

CLUTTER MAINTENANCE Now that your home is decluttered, find solutions that help you maintain it. Everything needs a “home” to make it easier to put something away when you are done with it. Take 10 or 15 minutes each day to put things back where they belong or sort through paper piles.

Take everything out of the room that isn’t cleaning or laundry related and keep it out.

Add a monthly event to your calendar to take on a maintenance task such as your closet or pantry.

When a full load of laundry accumulates, wash and dry it and put it away.

De-cluttering or spring cleaning can feel overwhelming, but York Region public health nurse Linh Lee says breaking large tasks into smaller ones, taking breaks to recharge your batteries and a little help can all make a big difference.

Hospice care focus of several runs, walks last weekend From Front Page

Despite the rain, nearly 900 participants crossed the finish line after completing the 10-kilometre, 5K and 2.5K routes through Aurora and Newmarket. “I live in Muskoka, and to have access to a facility of the quality of Southlake is a tremendous thing,” 5K runner Vickey Lee said. “I am grateful that our community has access to the exceptional quality of care that Southlake has to offer and hope more patients will find the help that I received.”

Lee is pleased to participate and she knows the importance of having a hospital that can offer cutting edge cardiac care in the area. She had serious heart issues last year, after helping her nephew move into an apartment. “By the end of the day, I got to the top and I was struggling,” she said. “I just felt really nauseous and exhausted. I had to stop. I never sit, so the family knew there was something really wrong.” Lee also had tightness in her chest and arms. She went to her local hospital, where they determined she had suffered a heart attack. Lee was sent to Southlake for treatment — coronary stents were implanted to reduce artery blockages. Because of treatment, there is no permanent damage to Lee’s heart. Run or Walk is the largest community fundraiser hosted by the Southlake Foundation. Supporters raised more than $120,000 by race day this year, and pledging remains open until Sunday, May 15. Proceeds will help support the most urgent needs at the hospital.

Organizers of Newmarket’s Mandarin MS Walk have hailed this year’s event a success. “You’re always a little nervous when it’s raining; you don’t know if people are going to show,” organizer Mike Stafford said. “But people came out in big numbers. Everybody seems to be having a great time. It just shows so many people are affected in our community. So many people care enough to come out and try to make a change.” About 500 walkers raised more than $72,000 for the MS Society of Canada’s York Region chapter. Proceeds benefit multiple sclerosis research and help improve the lives of people living with the disease. The course began at Riverwalk Commons, where participants warmed up with dancing and exercises near the large outdoor stage. The event included food, entertainment and prizes. Walkers support the event because they often have intimate knowledge of the devastating effects MS can have on a person’s health. “Even with all those other events

going on, we feel we put on a pretty good event here,” he said. “It’s not about us, it’s about the people who show up here and the people living with MS in this community who want to make a change.” Every year, more than 40,000 Canadians in more than 160 communities gather to fundraise and show support for the fight to end MS.

HIKE FOR HOSPICE, BENEFITTING DOANE HOUSE HOSPICE Doane House Hospice is one of the greatest places in Andrea Bourbonnais’ world. The Newmarket resident has participated in Doane’s Hike for Hopsice fundraiser for the past four years — the first time using a walker decorated in purple and white ribbons and flowers. This year, she walked the course unassisted, bundled in a jacket, turtleneck sweater and mittens, with a purple Hike T-shirt used as the top layer. “I was so happy to be able to help; it was tough going in the walker, but I was able to do it,” she said of the first year, prior to walking the route around Fairy Lake in Newmarket Sunday. “This is a wonderful event and it’s wonderful to see the community become so involved in it. I want it to get bigger and better every year. Most years are like it is today, cold and rainy. But I absolutely love it and I wouldn’t miss it for anything. I have trouble walking but I do it anyway. Doane is a wonderful place to go; it helps people with life-threatening illness. Some of the very best things in life happen in there.” Bourbonnais began using hospice services in 2003, after being diagnosed with brain cancer. Her health has stabilized for the past seven years. However, the disease is inoperable and she’s become quite ill at times in the past, regularly suffering seizures. Volunteers have visited her home to provide assistance and she participated in the hospice’s on-site therapy programs. About 120 people participated in this year’s hike, raising about $20,000 for Doane services. “When you look at how many have turned up today and consider it’s still raining and cold, everybody’s walking in honour or memory of somebody who’s had hospice palliative care services,” executive director Juliet Irish said, standing under a gazebo as volunteers prepared food on a barbecue. “It’s wonderful to see everybody. They value the services we offer.”

Hospice King-Aurora’s support is increasing with every hike. About 50 people participated in the facility’s Hike for Hospice Sunday, an increase of about 20 per cent over last year. In total, they raised about $6,500, a 15-per-cent increase in pledges over 2015 numbers. “Our walks tend to be smaller because they focus on our volunteers and clients; we don’t go too far outside,” executive director Heidi Bonner said. “We had great participation. We’ve participated in (Hike for Hospice) for the past three years, but it’s a hike that’s been going on across Canada for years. We’ve steadily gone up in fundraising.”

called 911 on her cellphone, but as he didn’t know the address of the home, ran to a neighbour, who gave emergency personnel the response address. In the meantime, he put two dogs in the home in a separate room, so they would not interfere with EMS personnel and was able to give details about his mom’s medications and medical history to help in her care. His award was presented by York police chief Eric Jolliffe, who leaned down to tell the boy to acknowledge the heartfelt applause from the crowd, which he did with a princely wave. There are two winners of the Adult Citizen of Character award this year. One is Kathy Proudfoot from East Gwilimbury, in her second term as a director on the Southlake Regional Health Centre board and previously chair of the Community Counts campaign for the hospital. A cancer survivor herself, Proudfoot volunteers with both the Cancer Society and Southlake’s regional Cancer Care Centre. For 14 years, she has also been involved with the Nin Os Kom Tin organization, raising cultural awareness and rekindling relationships between aboriginal peoples and other cultures within York, plus she supports the Ranji Singh Foundation, promoting social and cultural integration. This year, there are also two winners of the Senior Citizen of Character award — and fittingly, they volunteer together and hugged each other several times while on stage. Beth Greenblatt of Aurora has volunteered with palliative care patients at Southlake Regional Health Centre for four years. Beth demonstrates character in action every time she arrives to volunteer at the hospital. Her compassion, respect and integrity for palliative patients and families is remarkable — often starting with the presentation of a teddy bear to a patient. Her co-winner is Dinie Vanderwerf from East Gwillimbury. She has been volunteering at Southlake for almost 30 years and gives back by making handmade teddy bears for patients. She has made more than 1,000 bears to give palliative patients comfort and show they are not alone on their treatment journey. Aurora Preparatory Academy earns the Alternative Education Institution Award. The Academy instills in its students a sense of respect and responsibility to themselves and their community. Even from the youngest grades, it is an exceptionally inclusive school — welcoming new students and families with compassion and camaraderie. The school demonstrates integrity, respon-

sibility and optimism, within both staff and students. The Character Through the Arts award was presented posthumously to Merlene Samuel-Cephas, director and founder of Arts Spotlight Theatre School in Newmarket, and accepted by her emotional husband, son and daughter, as the audience offered a standing ovation. Her compassion, integrity and dedication to youth and the arts community were demonstrated for 30 years, especially through her creation of the Voice Impact Project, a notfor-profit performance group that gave youth a voice through original stories of friendship, compassion and respect. She passed away in November of 2015, and former and current students offered tributes about how she changed their lives and inspired them. Her legacy offers youth a way to create change in their lives and better their communities through the arts. Instead of honouring one Character Champion this year, organizers honoured the founding members of the York Character Foundation 15 years ago and those helping to start the annual awards evening 10 years ago. Kopperson is the founder and executive director of Windfall Ecology Centre, a nonprofit social enterprise dedicated to building sustainable communities. Driven by a desire to empower local communities and have more efficient and sustainable mechanisms to produce and use energy at the local level, Kopperson has been successful in bringing green energy to communities in York Region, and creating dialogue between multiple stakeholders, including governments, communities, investors and advocacy groups.

It really is an issue we need to address. The best thing is to actually experience what they have to go through hands on. They just want to have a good meal. It’s a challenge. It’s all about the people and the manpower. We need more volunteers. It’s a really good opportunity for young students like myself to work with older people. If you have an interest in health care, (volunteering) is a really good opportunity. You get really good insight into what’s happening.” Some students ate with oven mitts on their hands, others placed blacked-out goggles over their eyes. The scenarios reflected some of the physical, emotional and systemic issues patients may encounter during mealtimes, including limited vision, arthritis and restricted physical movement. The food was brought in on green cafeteria trays and each meal came with a purple plastic mug for a hot beverage. meal was being eaten — and that word is used somewhat in jest — because many of the students had difficulty connecting hand to mouth with consistency. Some seemed to enjoy the challenge of the experience, a few others showed frustration. Through the eating exercise, hospital staff attempted to build empathy among students. But during the day, students also talked to hospital staff and brainstormed solutions to some of the patient care issues faced by Southlake. “Southlake is committed to the quality of experience for our patients and looking at the health care challenges they experience,” Southlake research and innovation director Pat Clifford said. “Part of that is really very much around examining what works well and what can be improved. We have a real interest in engaging with youth. Hopefully it’s a win for them.” The event is also the result of a partnership between the hospital and York Region District School Board. “Sometimes, the adults of the world create problems, but we’re pretty certain all of you are going to find solutions for them,” school board director J. Philip Parappally said, while talking to the students and wearing oven mitts. “This is a wonderful partnership. The need will also soon reach a critical stage in Georgina, East Gwillimbury, Aurora and Richmond Hill, according to the report, which some in the cemetery industry are praising as the first comprehensive municipal cemetery needs analysis in Canada. “In my mind, York Region is the first region to even recognize the problem and to reach out to the industry to understand the problem, so my hat’s off to York Region for doing this,” said Glen Timney, vice-president of corporate development for the Mount Pleasant Group, which owns a number of funeral homes, cemeteries and mausoleums, including Elgin Mills Cemetery in Richmond Hill. In addition to a lack of cemetery land in certain areas of the region, there is also an impending need to provide more dedicated graveyard space for some religious and cultural groups, most notably Roman Catholics. Also, the industry is growing increasingly worried about the fact Toronto is running out of cemetery land and more of the city’s residents are looking to surrounding communities to bury their dead. “In isolation, some areas of York Region have sufficient land. Other areas of York Region will be running out of cemetery land. “But the major issue is the city

for cemetery land in the 1950s, the Newmarket cemetery board bought 37 acres on Leslie Street, north of Mulock Drive. But after realizing in 2010 that the site would not provide enough land for the next 100 years — cemeteries tend to plan for 50 to 100year time frames — the cemetery sold all but 10 acres to developer Forest Green Homes. The cemetery wanted to use the 10-acre wooded area for a “green burial site” while it looked for a larger plot of land for a new cemetery outside of town in East Gwillimbury, northern King or Whitchurch-Stouffville. The town dismissed the green burial site idea, although Evans said the cemetery board would like to revisit the plan. Overall, there are sufficient cemetery lands in the region to accommodate the 232,000 York residents who are expected to die between now and 2041, even as the region’s senior population increases by 148 per cent during that time. But lack of graveyard space in Toronto will put significant pressure on York, the report said. Toronto residents already account for 33 per cent of cemetery sales in the region. That could skyrocket to as much as 66 per cent as Toronto and other communities run out of cemetery space. “York Region will not have enough cemetery land capacity for 25 years of resident demand and non-resident use if the proportion of non-resident use increases to 66 per cent in the future,” the report said. Although Queensville Cemetery

general manager Jeff McIntosh has enough land to service the community for decades to come, he said the region was prudent in studying the cemetery requirements in communities across York. The cemetery has 15 acres of land left. Last year, it used 1/10th of an acre. “A hundred years from now, we’ll still have space, particularly with (more people turning to) cremation,” he said. “We’ll be servicing the Queensville area for many years to come.” The region has heard the concerns of the cemetery industry and is working to come up with policies to address them, Sandra Malcic, the region’s manager of planning and environment in long-range planning, said. At the same time, jurisdiction on some issues, such as the ability to accommodate the industry’s longer planning horizons and allowing new cemetery space on low-quality agricultural lands, would rest with the province, although the region may make recommendations to Queen’s Park in those directions, she said. “We’re going to have a lot of consultation with the industry and the province because they’re really key in the discussions. But the hope is that we can develop a pretty proactive policy,” she said. “We don’t figure it will be perfect, but we’re hoping it will go a long way to showing the industry that we’re committed to meeting the need and hoping we can work together to get a policy framework that will allow us to do so.”

Larry Blight remembered at parkette renaming Saturday By Chris Simon

Larry Blight loved Newmarket. From the Newmarket Food Pantry to the Santa Claus Parade, the popular former town councillor had influence over many of the events, charitable organizations and policies that shaped the town over the past few decades. Now, a parkette in his former stomping grounds has become a fitting tribute to his hard work. Friends, family and dignitaries gathered Saturday morning to officially rename the Penn Avenue Parkette in honour of Larry ‘Bubba’ Blight, who died in May 2014 at the age of 64. “It means a great deal to us to know that Larry will be remembered for the many things he did for the town he loved so much,” Liz Blight, Larry’s widow, said. “He was a hometown boy and would do anything to promote Newmarket while keeping that small-town feel. “He believed in helping others and it’s very gratifying that the town has honoured him by renaming the parkette. His name will live on. It’s in the ward that he cared so much about and it’s one of the very few parks in this ward.” It’s a “beautiful little” parkette, said Liz, noting the town recently cleaned up the site by planting trees and erecting new playground equipment. “It’s a fitting tribute,” she said. “Larry was part of Newmarket. Larry

would have been so honoured to have a permanent place in our town, our future and our history. He just wanted to make it a better place to live.” Blight was a long-time Newmarket resident who served on council from 2003 to 2010 and received the municipality’s Citizen of the Year Award in April 2013. He supported many local causes, from the Music in the Park series to community safety. He was a Kanata Summer Festival Committee founding member and Newmarket Heights Community Association chairperson and was active on the Newmarket Seniors Meeting Place advisory board and in the First Night celebration, among other causes. “He was very highly regarded as a neighbourhood community person,” said Mayor Tony Van Bynen, a good friend of Blight’s. “He believed in creating opportunities for people to gather (and) to have conversations. In doing so, (he was) building a sense of community, so that you would get to know and help out your neighbours. He had a real sense of pride about being a Newmarket guy and as much as he loved our town, he worked hard to help make Newmarket even better.” Van Bynen recalled how Blight would often run karaoke until the early hours of the morning, but would still be available to set up sound equipment at Terry Fox and MS Walk fundraisers and Remembrance Day services hours later. “Larry worked hard and he played hard; I could never keep up with him,” he said.

Clements After weeks of planning I am grateful to say that the annual Aurora Chamber Home Show feature home I designed and the team from Jack’s Landscaping built, pulled together in a way that the entire team can be proud of. It would be an unfair for me not to acknowledge the stellar job that Jack’s crew, particularly his brother Simon and Simon’s son Derek, did to build an entire home at SARC in a matter of three days. Moreover, I would be remiss if I didn’t thank my husband and our friend Rick, my niece Jamie and my kids for lending us a much needed hand in getting the space completely finished and setup. That said, we couldn’t have completed our work without the help of Russ from Aurora Home Hardware and Brad from The Royal Woodshop for their generous building materials contributions. I was blessed with a number of wonderful local companies that helped with the quick furnishing of the home, including Whittington Furniture and particularly Seif Designs who built our gorgeous kitchen, Darmaga Hardwood

Flooring who supplied, installed and cleaned our flooring, Harmony Fabrics who created our lovely window coverings and George at Lifestyle Oasis who was kind enough to provide us with windows to dress. Many of you who came by awed by the wonderful stone countertops which were supplied and fabricated by Latitude Countertops who have started offering not one but two invaluable services; the Remnant program from which you can purchase stone off-cuts just enough counter to suit your renovation and save the cost of needing to purchase an entire slab and; the “We Seal it 4 U” service through which you can have your counters professionally sealed and benefit from the 25-year warranty that comes with the service. There has been a recent migration away from the use of natural stone for counters and I think that programs like these make using a natural material a much more interesting prospect. I hope that you were able to gain inspiration from the variety of fabrics, colours and textures that I used in the design of the feature. It’s important to note that a serene, relaxing space can be achieved when you keep your eye on the larger vision of what you want for your home. You may have noted that while the chairs I selected didn’t match in style, they were coordinated, creating a calm environment containing accents of darker elements like the brown

weathered leather chairs in the bedroom and the warm grey contemporary sofa in the living room. Combining these more dramatic elements with good classics like the neutral-coloured tufted dining chairs, which among other items were lent to us by Niche Decor, added a softening element to what some often consider a difficult palette to work with. The drama continued with an eyecatching live-edge walnut table provided by Mathew Wright of Hunters Wood Works. There wasn’t one visitor who didn’t take the chance to get a close up look at the beautiful finish applied to the table Mathew created. I loved how this natural material created an easy contrast

to the more modern feel of the space. We were very fortunate to have Sherwin Williams provide us with the paint for the feature, and since many of you requested them, I am happy to provide you with the colours we selected for the space, which was a lovely balance of taupes and greys, adding to the calm aesthetic created for the feature. LSRCA seeks nominations for Conservation Awards ceremony

The Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority wants to hear the story as it seeks nominations for the 35th annual Conservation Awards ceremony, taking place at Madsen’s Garden and Greenhouse Nov. 3. Eligible nominations are based on environmental contributions or conservation projects completed by individuals, community groups or businesses within the Lake Simcoe watershed between August 2015 and July 2016. Past award winners have made their school yards more green, installed large wildflower gardens, created urban rain gardens, naturalized shorelines, planted trees on a large scale and installed turtle crossing signs. Submissions will be accepted until Aug. 12. Nominate someone at LSRCA.on.ca.

Windfall Ecology Centre has been recognized for its environmental excellence. Green Communities Canada’s RAIN Community Solutions, a program run by the centre in partnership with York Region, received the Ontario Environment and Climate Change Ministry’s 2015 Minister Award for Environmental Excellence. The centre has offered the program for several years, building rain gardens, providing rain barrels, de-paving hardened surfaces and advising homeowners on water damage prevention. These activities lead to more flood resilient communities, fewer wet basements and mould-related health impacts, increased green spaces, increase in the urban tree canopy and awareness of storm water management. ot a day goes by that Halle Glen, a Grade 11 student at a Toronto high school, doesn’t think about her best friend, Abby Fedosoff. It’s been just more than a year since Abby, a competitive swimmer, writer and artist, killed herself. She was only 15. Still, when Glen hears her friend’s name or catches a glimpse of someone’s long, blond hair, it’s a shock to her system. “She is always on my mind,” Glen said. Glen wishes she had known just how much pain Abby was in. Many of her friends and teachers had no idea the student was living with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), an illness Abby kept secret. “I would have done anything in my power to help her,” said Glen, revealing she believed her friend kept her illness to herself for fear of what people would think. That’s why Glen is participating in the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health’s (CAMH) ‘One Brave Night,’ an all-night challenge to raise awareness of and funds to defeat mental illness, which takes place Friday, May 13. Glen called Abby, “one of the most amazing people I knew,” on her online CAMH One Brave Night Personal Page. “She was beautiful, kind, loving and compassionate,” wrote Glen, adding she was a fan of the group One Direction, loved dogs, her family and friends.” No one is immune to mental illness, said Dr. Katy Kamkar, a psychologist at CAMH and an assistant professor in the department of psychiatry at the University of Toronto. One in five Canadians will experience mental illness or addiction in his or her lifetime, yet two thirds of those say they feel alone, Kamkar said. “It touches every single person either directly or indirectly,” she said. CAMH’s all-night challenge is an evolution of an event that was initiated last year called ‘From Darkness to Light,’ which raised more than $700,000 in support of Canada’s largest mental health and addiction teaching hospital and research centre. “The program has really taken off. More than 1,000 people have registered (so far) from across Canada,” Kamkar said. One Brave Night challenges participants to say up all night because people living with mental illness indicate that nighttime is

the most difficult for them, Kamkar said. The goal is to reduce the stigma of mental health as well as the suffering in silence while raising funds and encouraging people to seek treatment. Kamkar treats clients with a variety of mental health issues, including Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, anxiety and stress disorders as well as occupational trauma. She said it’s important to provide loved ones with the proper support – listen, ask how they’re doing, go with them to medical appointments and perhaps, most importantly, show the right attitude. “Attitudes can be harmful. Saying things like, ‘Relax, you’ll get over it’ or ‘You’ll get better,’ any of these can feed the stigma,” Kamkar said. “They can make people feel guilty and reduces their sense of self-worth and prolongs recovery. Show empathy instead. Provide the care that’s needed.” After Abby died, Glen’s sister, Kendall, revealed she had been

hiding a mental illness. Once she shared what she was facing, her family and friends rallied around her. “My sister has a good support system,” Glen said. “I think the key is to find one person who you’re comfortable with to talk to.” Suicide is the second leading cause of death among Canadian youth, according to 2014 data from Statistics Canada. Youth who die by suicide are frequently experiencing an undiagnosed or untreated mental illness, Government of Canada stats say.

‘After accidents, suicide is the second leading cause of death among 10 to 19 year olds.’ “Young people ages 15 to 24 are most likely to experience mental illness or substance abuse than any other age group in Canada,” Kamkar said. “After accidents, suicide is the second leading cause of death among 10 to 19 year olds.” CAMH is home to the Slaight Family Centre for Youth in Transition. This is Canada’s first centre dedicated to understanding and treating severe mental illness and addictions in youth from the late

teens through early adulthood and a world first. It combines research and clinical care to advance new approaches for early intervention and recovery. CAMH treats more than 30,000 people and responds to more than 500,000 outpatient visits annually. Its ER sees about 7,400 patients each year, a 76 per cent increase since 2006. CAMH provides specialized treatment for psychosis episodes, early Alzheimer’s disease, drug addiction and depression, children with behavioural issues and people with schizophrenia, among a host of other ailments. CAMH boasts as many as 3,000 physicians, nurses, social workers, therapists, researchers, educators, volunteers and students and has recruited world-renowned, awardwinning specialists to many of its clinical programs and research initiatives. Glen’s ‘Team Abby’ has already raised more than $2,300 toward One Brave Night and pledge money is still coming in after an April 18 swimathon. The teen, who lives on the Brampton-Mississauga border, said she and at least 20 of her friends are ready for a night of air hockey, ping pong and, if the weather permits, swimming.

he number of distempered skunks and raccoons having to be “dispatched” by police in York Region has ballooned so much that the service has stopped the practice. In 2015, police euthanized 80 animals with their firearms, a 175per-cent rise from 2014 when 29 were put down. It’s not only an inefficient use of the service’s resources, according to York Regional Police, but also a safety risk considering officers are often having to shoot the sick and injured animals with shotguns in highly populated urban areas. Thornhill, specifically, has seen two incidents where people felt at risk near officers while they destroyed animals. In November, a 78-year-old man received injuries to his head after police shot a seriously injured deer in the Henderson and Proctor avenues area. The special investigations unit is investigating that incident. Then, in March, a postal carrier reported feeling fearful when police shot a skunk with him nearby — the officers waited several hours for the distempered animal to meander its way to a safe area so that it could be shot. That same day, police were called to a nearby site to help out with another skunk. In this case, the animal was bleeding from its eyes and had other festering body parts. As a result of the police decision, each municipality in the region has now been advised that as of Sept. 1, police will no longer be fulfilling this role and they will have to figure out their own methods. In a letter sent to each town and city, police said they will only be responding to animal complaints when they come as a result of vehi-

cle collisions. “Police firearms are not meant to be used as primary tools for wildlife management,” the letter states. Distemper is a viral disease, also found in dogs, which mimics the effects of rabies. However, unlike rabies, distemper is not transferable to humans. It can result in animals appearing discombobulated, wandering in circles and seeming unafraid of humans and can also lead to paralysis and brain damage. Dogs should be vaccinated against the disease as a precaution. York Region is not alone in its struggles with distemper. Toronto has seen a marked rise in the number of skunks with distemper, along with Waterloo and other parts of the GTA and throughout Ontario. Bill Dowd, owner of Skedaddle Humane Wildlife Control, who works in many jurisdictions across the GTA, said he’s seen a 20 to 30-per-cent rise in the number of distemper cases in many communities. “We’re seeing warmer weather and, as a result, everything is more active, the animals that would have died from distemper in colder winters have survived and we’re witnessing the effects,” he said. The Bradford resident arrived at the doorstep of Rose of Sharon at 15. She was six months pregnant, confused and scared. Once inside, staff helped the teenaged mom-to-be earn high school credits and begin to chart a path forward. Now, due, in part, to the services and support provided by Rose staff, she’s become a successful entrepreneur by opening the Drive True Mechanical auto shop. She’s a mother of three and has a husband, Tom. Amber is also the president of a local business networking group for women. But she never forgets the folks who kept her motivated during an

extremely difficult time. “I attended Rose 15 years ago; that was half a lifetime ago,” Smith said, speaking to a crowd of about 40 people during a street sign unveiling outside the Eagle Street facility in Newmarket Monday afternoon. “Once I finally admitted (I was pregnant), I left traditional high school and enrolled at Rose. During my pre-natal days, I spent my time here getting high school credits, taking birthing workshops and working with my counsellor in setting goals for dealing with realities I now had to face. “Through the Rose, a wide variety of services were available to me — services I didn’t even know existed. I was able to gain confidence as a parent, which is the biggest struggle we young mothers face. I got opportunities from the Rose that shaped the person I am today. I still consider myself a young mother; it never leaves me.” She worked against statistics —

which told her she was unlikely to finish high school, rise above the poverty line and raise a child that would attend college. “When I became a teen parent, I felt I was destined to fall into these statistics,” Smith said. “We can rise above the statistics. I would never have a normal family. But because of this phenomenal service, I didn’t feel hopeless anymore. I’m proud to say I’m happy; I have the family I’ve always dreamed of.” The event was part of Rose’s rebranding exercise, which includes a new website, logo and exterior signage.

It was a warm afternoon and once the sun came out, its glare on the microphone and sound system forced many to squint as they watched Smith. She stood near the entrance to the Rose and the front door was held open by a wooden toy truck. Inside, the facility is clean but welcoming and staff offered tours to guests. There are pictures of kids whose mothers have been helped by Rose hanging above the secretary’s desk and a cradle is in the corner of the main foyer. The hallway and most of the public areas are painted green and the walls of staff offices are purple. There’s a room used for schooling, a kitchen and lounge area and a childcare space and paintings and felt murals on the walls. Rose assists more than 300 York Region mothers each year. The facility offers individual counselling, group programs that strengthen parenting and life skills,

high school education assistance and child minding services. Food, diapers and baby clothing is also supplied to the young mothers, if necessary. It has provided support for more than 30 years. “We embarked on a journey to create a logo that truly reflects the work we do,” Rose executive director Anna Pavan said. “We’re the only agency in the region that provides these types of services, but we still had a lot of confusion about what we do. We took a look at that. “We looked at the rebranding as a refresher. People didn’t realize the old logo was an R and an S, shaped like a heart. We knew then that the logo had to reflect who we’re supporting. “(The new logo) has on it a mother and child. It’s pretty clear who we work with. Whether a young (mother) is in crisis in Georgina or Markham, this is a place for them to come.”

The expansion of a provincial dental program will have more York Region youths smiling this year. Currently, the Healthy Smiles Ontario program enables more than 323,000 children and youths younger than 17 from low-income families across the province to access free preventative, routine, emergency and essential care from licensed dentists and dental hygienists. Just in York Region, 6,900 children accessed the Healthy Smiles program provided by 745 local dental professionals last year. Dental services covered include: checkups, cleaning, fillings, X-rays and urgent or emergency oral health issues. Ontario integrated six publicly funded children’s dental programs into one, making 70,000 more children and youths eligible with a simplified enrolment process, the government stated. Dorothy Dziunikowski, a registered hygienist and manager of York Region Health’s dental program, welcomes the Healthy Smiles expansion. “Many dental problems are preventable and dental health is connected to a person’s overall health,” she said.

An expansion of Healthy Smiles Ontario means 70,000 more children and youths across the province will be eligible for dental care. Not only can untreated oral health problems affect a child’s ability to eat, sleep and concentrate in school, but it can also put them at risk for periodontal disease, respiratory diseases and diabetic complications later in life. Dental services can be costly and aren’t covered under the provincial OHIP program, which makes it difficult for people in a low-income household to access, according to Dziunikowski. Children are eligible for the program if they or their family receives government financial assistance, are younger than 17, live in Ontario

and come from a household with an income fitting the specific guidelines. A family with one child must earn equal or less than a net income of $22,070 to be eligible for the program and with every additional dependent child, the set net income cap increases by $1,670. The Ontario Dental Association responded positively to the government’s decision to streamline the six separate publicly funded children’s oral care programs into one, Dr. Victor Kutcher, president of the Ontario Dental Association, said in a prepared statement.

Infants’ mouths should be wiped daily, even before they have teeth. All children should have the first dental visit by the age of one. Teeth should be brushed and flossed twice a day, with the evening cleaning being the most important. Parents should be brushing a child’s teeth until he or she turns six, as they don’t have the ability to brush properly themselves. Setting the oral hygiene routine early in life will increase the chances of the child continuing that routine into adulthood. Adults should be modeling the behaviour to reinforce its importance. Use a two-minute dental timer to ensure brushing is continued long enough to be effective. Practice prevention by avoiding sugary and sticky edibles including excessive fruit juice, sodas, gummy candy. Only allow water in sippy cups and rinse with or drink water after every meal to neutralize sugars in other food and drinks.

“Eliminating duplication and creating a single program means more children and youth can go to school with a healthy smile,” Kutcher said, adding the association will continue to work with the government “to ensure sustainable and equitable funding for dental programs”. The government’s expanded Healthy Smiles Ontario program is aimed at enhancing children’s overall health, Ontario Health Minister Dr. Eric Hoskins said. “We are making it easier for children to get the dental care they need, because having good oral

health and a healthy smile can have positive impacts on a child’s overall health, self-esteem and ability to learn,” he said in a prepared statement. While tooth decay is one of the most common childhood diseases, “it is preventable with proper dental care, and our expanded Healthy Smiles program is helping more kids access these important services”, Hoskins added. Sport Aurora builds on its file of community connections

E

verybody can use another friend. Especially one with connections in the right places. Thus, the recent addition of the Aurora Youth Soccer Club and Aurora Minor Hockey Association to the roster for Sport Aurora can be viewed as nothing less than positive development on the sports scene in that community. The mystery of it all — what took so long? “It should have happened years ago,” said Steve Kimmerer, president for Sport Aurora, the advocacy group which now represents nearly 40 sports and activity organizations. “It’s just a combination of the right time now and having kept open communications.” For unclear reasons, both organizations have been reluctant to join the Sport Aurora family during its decade-long existence. But whatever issues, personalities or back stories separated Sport Aurora from the hockey and soccer groups in the past now seem resolved. Adding soccer and hockey to a roster which includes just about everything that moves on Aurora playing surfaces does nothing but solidify and amplify voices. Sport Aurora already has, to some degree, the ear of town hall. Now

it’s able to speak with a slightly louder voice, if and when required. It’s a long way from the days of each organization meekly approaching council, hat in hand, with a request. It’s also a show of strength. “It takes away any doubt when you’re in front of (town) council (which) is wondering if we are speaking for every sport and why aren’t these two part of it,” said Kimmerer.

‘Organizations in the town are getting bigger and Aurora is getting to be a bigger sports town.’ Hockey and soccer both sign on while seeking a little help. Hockey is looking for a solution to decreasing registrations. The soccer club could use assistance in developing existing facilities for its elite programing, which includes a youth system highlighted by membership in the Ontario Player Development League and men’s and women’s semi-pro level League1 Ontario franchises. Clearly allies will exist in other outdoor facility user groups. In the spirit of what took so long, it’s high time this step has been achieved. Just about every

John Cudmore Cuddy Shark organization that uses Aurora facilities has jumped under the Sport Aurora umbrella. “We thought as a group that it’s time we become part of a solution rather than be a bystander,” said AMHA president Joe Bentolila. “We’ve often thought with our support, and youth soccer’s support, Sport Aurora might be able to accomplish even more.” With a shrinking enrolment, Bentolila conceded a bit of self-interest is involved in the move. That said, the inclusion of minor hockey and its 1,300-player membership, along with 5,000 year-round AYSC members, is quite a jolt in the arm for Sport Aurora. For the AMHA, perhaps there is a way to tap into markets it has

been unable to reach. Aurora is not the only shrinking hockey program around, but it is savvy enough to seek help from its new friends. “Demographics are changing drastically,” said Bentolila. “Maybe they can help us as an association in things we can’t do single-handedly. We need more kids, so if they can help us lobby in areas we can’t get to, it’s win-win.” We’ll see if this united approach is for the better of the sports community in Aurora. Over a decade, results and achievements are generally encouraging. “We looked at it and felt it was the right move and time to come in and be part of it,” said AYSC executive director Jimmy Brennan. “It gives a stronger voice for both us and hockey. We looked at the way our organization is going and how other sports are doing well and think Sport Aurora is putting together a great plan.” One issue is the need to upgrade outdoor facilities. “Organizations in the town are getting bigger and Aurora is getting to be a bigger sports town,” said Brennan. “We talk about what a great environment there is in Aurora. All have needs and a stronger voice might help everyone.” To be sure, the addition of youth hockey and soccer brings added

clout to Sport Aurora’s efforts to generate a sport tourism footprint in the municipality. Historically, municipal councils in many centres have displayed little urgency for the sports community within their gaze, preferring to let community groups do their own thing. That leaves a lot of catching up to do. A few, like Brantford to name an Ontario municipality, have embraced sports tourism and its advantages, even creating sport tourism departments whose role is to ensure ... ahem, tourism related to sport. It sounds like a simple concept. It is not. Especially in the absence of overnight accommodations. That, despite willingness of organizations, particularly youth hockey and soccer, to regularly stage multiple-day tournaments, is Sport Aurora’s primary roadblock. It’s a Catch-22 situation: a hotel chain can’t commit millions of dollars to a location just because a few tournaments are staged annually. Sport Aurora’s goal now is to assess how much business and traffic its groups can create. Both soccer and hockey help in that area, but are merely part of the puzzle. It would be nice for someone to take the risk. But how do you blame them if they don’t?

Baseball fans became acquainted with Little Joey Bats during the Toronto Blue Jays’ playoff success last season. Later to be revealed as Oscar Wood, 9, of Thornton, the youngster showed remarkable timing in mimicking slugger Jose Bautista’s swing, just before a playoff series-winning home run, painted-on beard and all. Now fans, meet a junior version of Marcus Stroman — Carson Reid. He’s the youngster whose admiration for the Toronto Blue Jays pitcher has resulted in a two-tone hairstyle to resemble his hero. Given the fact the Newmarket resident bears a likeness to the Blue Jays’ starter, he has attracted considerable attention, occasionally showing up on camera during games at Rogers Centre. The transformation to Blue Jays’ pitcher started last Halloween when he informed his mother, Caitlyn, that he’d like to dress up as Stroman. “I though, ‘How will I do this?’ So, I’ve actually dyed his hair twice so far,” explained his mother, a long-time Blue Jays fan. His grandmother’s friend tweeted the photo to Stroman, who retweeted it. They met face-on at Upper Canada Mall during the Jays’ winter tour pass through Newmarket in January. The Jays’ pitcher recognized his young doppelganger and was quick to get together for a photo. Carson, 8, came away with a signed baseball and a new major league

In the meantime, the two Stromans have corresponded back and forth. They met again prior to a recent Jays’ game when the big leaguer handed over his warmup jersey. “(Carson is) very modest about things,” said Caitlin. “People come up to him when

we’re out and about. When we go to a game it takes about an hour to get to our seats because everyone wants to take a photo with him. “We usually go in for batting practice and when (Stroman) sees him, he usually comes over. Now when he sees Carson it’s, ‘Hey Dawg. What’s up?’” The Grade 3 student at Glen Cedar Public

School ditched soccer this season to take a swing at the rookie ball division of the Newmarket Baseball Association. “He’s really good at soccer but is playing baseball for the first time,” said his mother. “Unfortunately, they are both on the same day.” The kid can’t wait to start showing his stuff at shortstop or the plate. He’s looking forward to home runs, big plays and knocking in runs. He might have tried pitching, but rookie ball uses a pitching machine. Carson got caught up in the wave of Blue Jays enthusiasm last season, when the team reached the playoffs for the first time since 1993. “He was always sitting and watching games with me,” said Caitlin, a long-time Blue Jays fan. “I like them all, but Stroman the most,” said the youngster. “He’s a good pitcher and very nice. I like his attitude and style of pitching.” Not surprisingly, Carson and Wood have met and become friends. “I saw him (Wood) this weekend,” said Carson, who, along with his mom, saw two of three games against the Oakland A’s. “Sometimes we have a game of catch when we’re waiting in line.” It’s still early, as the Blue Jays scuffled through April around the .500 level, but Carson isn’t too worried. “I think they’re going to win the World Series this year,” he predicted.

Baseball in the swing with opening day Saturday

Play ball! The boys and girls of summer swing into action Saturday when the Newmarket Baseball Association opens its 2016 season. Riding on a wave of enthusiasm generated last year by the Toronto Blue Jays successful season, the organization is experiencing a rejuvenation with registration increasing dramatically from recent seasons to break through the 1,000member barrier. As of Tuesday, registration showed an increase from 800 to 1,050 players. The bulk of the increase is in house leagues where 775 players have signed up compared to 550 last season. The opening to the season includes the traditional parade of the organization’s players into the Newmarket Fairgrounds starting at 9 a.m. Several pre-season games will be played throughout the day at the Fair-

gorounds and Armstrong Park, including several Newmarket Hawks’ rep teams will play scrimmage games at McKnight Field. Ceremonies, including first pitch, are slated for approximately 9:30 a.m.

put him in good position to compete against the rest of the country next week.” Also included on the five-person team is Maya Neumann, who outshot the junior competition and finished fourth overall to easily qualify for one of the mandatory two junior spots required on the five-person unit. “It was nice to be able to win a competition,” said Neumann. “It’s the best I’ve ever shot. I’m so proud of myself. I’ve never been out of province, but now I’m going to nationals and representing the corps.” Romses is impressed by the 14-year-old’s abilities. “She’s an intense person and really wants to win and understands what it means to have to success,” he said. “I think we’re incredibly confident as a team,” said Neumann, a Grade 9 student at Newmarket High School. “We know we’re good shooters and know we can shoot well. We just have to continue to do it.” Rounding out the squad, from which the best four results are counted, are Tyler McKechnie, Nicholas Ertl and Emily Woodhouse. Following Canadians, Hoyes will zero in on three weeks of competition starting June 28 in Bisley, England, before a two-week tour of Europe, including a visit to Vimy Ridge. Among his future goals are qualifying for an Olympic Games and a military career as a sniper. “I have this gift and I think I could use it to protect our men and women on the ground.”

Ethan Hoyes has had his sights set on the target for quite some time. When the Aurora resident joined the Queen’s York Rangers army cadet corps five years ago, like many newcomers, Hoyes was in awe of the shooting team. However, when he scored poorly in shooting assessment as a first-year cadet, he thought hope of joining their ranks had ended. “Ever since I joined, I’d wanted to be on the shooting team,” recalled Hoyes, now 17, a recent individual champion at the Central Region marksman championships in Trenton. “We all thought, ‘They’re cool. They’re the marksmen.’ Everybody wants to be one of them. “It’s not easy to get on the team, because it is made up of great shooters. Every year for 40 or 50 years, there has been a shooter on the national rifle team. I just thought they’re the best and never about making it.” Hoyes, who holds the rank of warrant officer, will lead the 2799 Queen’s York Rangers cadets to the national championships taking place this week in Gimli, Man., with an eye on securing a national title for the Aurora-based program. Their win in Trenton against 24 finalists drawn from a starting field of 268 units across Ontario marked the first title for 2799 since 2010. Hoyes is also on the 18-cadet national rifle team, which will compete this summer in England. After general training in 2012, Hoyes applied for the expeditions summer program in 2013, but was

It was the first step in his march upward through the ranks. “I wanted to do expedition camp because I didn’t think I would make the shooting team But I guess I sort of had a good day. “I started thinking it’s not easy to make the team,” said Hoyes, who has biathlon (skiing and shooting) experience. “It’s not an easy thing to do.” At his first tryouts, he scored poorly — one out of four, in fact — and it seemed he was not on target for the shooting team. His solution was to work harder. “I think it’s not just the time

you put in shooting, but how you dedicate yourself to your passion,” said Hoyes. “It is more than just getting down and shooting. It’s 90 percent mental, but if you don’t prepare mentally, it affects how you perform.” He compared it to a hockey player who works solely on improving his slapshot. It is one element of the game, but if he can’t skate to the puck, its value as a skill is diminished. “I need to work on my standing if I want to win, but I think with my team and encouragement, I can,” he said. “It’s still really close, so we will have to work our butts off.”

The team finished second last year at the national championships and Hoyes thinks the five members of the squad can do better. “We weren’t focused and prepared, so we have worked on overcoming mental fatigue and stress,” said Hoyes. Squad coach Roger Romses feels their chances are good for a medal coming out of a tough Ontario sector with Hoyes leading the way. “To be provincial champion, certainly he’s had a strong year, but this was certainly a much stronger performance for him compared to last year,” said Romses. “This will

RECEPTION ADMINISTRATOR 35 hours per week 1 year contract Reporting to the Accounting Manager, the Reception Administrator has the responsibility of managing the day-to-day operations of the Reception Office. This position serves visitors by greeting, welcoming, and directing them appropriately. ason Churchill was a man well ahead of his time. Several years ago, Jason – a firefighter with the city of Markham for close to three decades – started tinkering with drones. The drones weren’t very sophisticated, even for the time. His hope was to dispatch drones ahead of fire trucks to assess the fire. “He was trying to get this drone to work,” said fellow Markham firefighter Michael Stevens, who started around the same as Jason. “He was always looking to what’s coming. And this was four or five years before drones were even on the table.” Jason had a reputation for thinking ten steps ahead, how to make firefighters safer so they can do their job protecting the public. When he looked into something or tried something new, no one thought he was nuts. Instead, those around him thought he was on to something, Stevens added. “When he tried it out, we knew it was because he thought about it,” he said. “It was only a matter of time before we would hear people say, ‘Ok, now we have drone problems.’” Jason died last June from cancer at the age of 50. His death was

Safety for firefighters was a top priority for Jason, even when there was plenty of pushback at the

beginning, said long-time friend Ron Larson. “He ended up saving a lot of lives,” Larson said. “And not just the public but other firefighters, too.” Jason also played an important role in the Markham Professional

Fire Fighters Association. “If there was something wrong, he did what he could to make it right,” said Markham fire platoon chief Scott Daniel. “He was always fighting for the little guy. People don’t realize, all of the things we have Jason

pushed for them.” The acquiring of equipment such as fire truck lights, foam trucks to fight chemical fires, fire retardant bunker gear, airplane crash and rescue training and post-fire rehabilitation and decontamination can be traced back to Jason’s efforts. “His thinking was, ‘If we needed it, we’re gonna get it,’” Stevens said. “It was all for us.” To commemorate Jason, a statue was commissioned not only as a tribute to him but also as a memorial for all firefighters who died in the line of duty. Vancouver artist Dean Lauzé carved Jason’s profile into clay using old photos. The 7-ft. tall statue, titled Undaunted, will be cast in bronze and placed on top of a black granite block, putting his head and helmet some 9-feet in the air, Larson said. “It will just feel heroic,” he added. The black granite base is inscribed in gold leaf the words, “Brothers who stand together cannot fall alone”. “He as 100 per cent about the brotherhood,” Stevens said. Passed away very peacefully Wednesday, May 4, at the age of 92, lovingly surrounded by his family, at his residence in Paris, Ontario. Beloved husband for 71 years of Hazel (n. Morrison) and the best father ever to Wayne (Carol), Bob (Fran), Wendy (John), Donna. The best Grandfather ever to Emmy-Lou (Aaron), Aaron, Anne, Wesley (Laura), Taylor (Becky), Darren (Alicia), Jaclyn, and Beverly. Alex was blessed with great granddaughters Hazel and Finley. Alex was born in 1923 in King City and joined the RCAF in 1942. He was a celebrated Lancaster Pilot completing 24 ops and was awarded the DFC for his bravery when shot down over France. While training at the Brantford SFTS No. 5, Alex met Hazel Morrison of Fairview, Alberta and they were married in October of 1944. Alex and Hazel built a house in King City where they lived for 68 years. Alex had a career teaching for many years at Huron Heights High School in Newmarket. They moved to the Queensview Residence in Paris in 2014. Visitation will be on Saturday, May 7th starting at 10:00am, at the Dwayne Budgell Funeral Home, Paris. At a time golf courses are apt to be closing out their rounds, Lebovic Golf Club in Aurora is stepping up to the tee. Not that the developer’s project was intended to be contrary to the trend. It’s just the timeline has been two decades since the initial concept to build the course as part of a Lebovic Homes subdivision of luxury homes was hatched. The closure and development of golf course lands is a sensitive issue for area golfers, who in recent years have seen the last of facilities such as Kleinburg Golf Club, Glenway Golf Club and Clublink’s Highland Gate. With more to come —Mandarin, York Downs and Copper Creek are destined for developers’ hands — it is enough to give a golfer a case of the yips. “It’s not on purpose,” said CPGA club head professional Ken Hamilton, who welcomed golfers to Lebovic for the first time Wednesday. “The site was first viewed by

The starting seven are situated on the west side of Leslie Street with the remaining 11 holes situated on property across the street to the east, connected by an underground tunnel. “The west has a links-y feeling, with lots of fescue,” said Hamilton,

who previously worked at Glen Eagle Golf Club in Bolton and The Briars in Jackson’s Point. “There’s lots of elevation in the first seven holes and some great views to the southwest over Richmond Hill and Toronto.” The east side is highlighted by a three-hole stretch starting at No. 11. “It’s cut out of forest and a completely different feel than the rest of the course,” said Hamilton. “It has a Carolinas feel.” A 15,000-square-foot Venetianinspired clubhouse on the west side of Leslie Street is expected to be completed by the end of 2016. Hamilton, a Holland Landing resident, believes allowing 12 minutes between tee times is an attractive feature for players seeking a more laid-back club atmosphere. “We’re not overly concerned if it is not rocking and rolling right from the start,” said Hamilton. “There is a ton of choice for golfers, but this is going to be fun and I think people will be impressed with the course.”

Metroland Media Hyundai recently unveiled a new limited-build Veloster Rally Edition with a one-off matte colour, tricked out with suspension tweaks and treated to special packaging with boy-racer styling. I could make some cute comment about how car companies might stagger model variations to keep the brand buzz alive but, frankly, I don’t think the Veloster’s novelty has worn off yet. And it’s hard not to overuse the word “unique” in reference to the Veloster, whether it’s about the swoopy, K-tailed styling, the sleek profile or the hunkered-down, almost UFO-like rear view. Then there’s the three-door architecture with a long driver’sside door and two short passengerside doors, which sounds offbeat and different but adds a little utility, unexpected in most coupes. It at least allows an easier reach into the second row for grabbing groceries or getting the offspring out of the infant seat. That combination of, yes, unique configuration and styling earned the Veloster a 2012 AJAC Best Design award after it was introduced to Canada. And, with subsequent additions, the Veloster carries on with a wide variety of flavours and price choices. The 138 hp normally aspirated Veloster lineup ranges from $18,599 to $24,249 through three trim levels with graduated content levels, flash colours and with a standard manual transmission or DCT auto-

The 201 hp Veloster Turbo, starting at $27,199 offers more power, more standard goodies, the same transmission check boxes and it kicks in with two funky matte colour options - Matte Orange or Matte Grey ($1,000). Now, for 2016, the new Rally Edition adds to the Turbo lineup, with only 1,200 built for the global market (probably around 200 or so destined for Canadian dealers). The Rally Edition’s most notice-

able feature is its exclusive matte blue finish with diffused reflection qualities that soften the usual play of light along the car’s curves, lines and muscular bulges. Special Rally Edition badging and blacked-out faux carbon fibre aero accents add an edge to the performance look, enhanced further by lightweight RAYS 18-inch alloy wheels that reduce unsprung weight by 2.2 kg (5 lb) per wheel. A sport suspension features upgrades to the shock absorbers,

coil springs and stabilizer bar for quicker response and handling and ride height has dropped by about 10 mm. Engineers also replaced the panoramic glass sunroof with a lighter, full metal roof. And while it’s hard to pin down the total weight loss, some sources have speculated at about a 45 kg (100 lb) overall weight reduction for the Rally Edition. It’s been six years since a brand new sixth generation Ford Fiesta was resurrected in North America after a 30-year absence. The newly introduced Fiesta was a true global car, assembled in Mexico with engines from Brazil and Romania. And with an Aston Martin-like visage distilled down to pocketsized perkiness, the Fiesta instantly added Euro-style verve and subcompact sensibilities to the Ford lineup, fitting neatly under the steadily growing Ford Focus as the brand’s new entry-level car. “Think big!” may be the mantra of our self-inflated, self-motivational culture.

But there’s something to be said for thinking small, especially when it comes to a nimble urban runabout that can flit through city traffic and squeeze into tight parking spots that bigger vehicles have to pass by. The Fiesta comes in two configurations - four-door sedan or fivedoor hatchback models. The components, sheet metal and dimensions of those two body styles are virtually identical but the hatchback boasts a somewhat sportier elan than the understated sedan. Pugnacious small car styling packed with features Continued from page W1 litres of luggage while the taller storage space in the hatchback offers 423 litres, expanding to 720 litres with the second row folded forward. Ford deserves bonus points for keeping things simple, offering both the sedan and hatchback for identical prices through the lineup’s three graduated trim levels - S ($16,049), SE ($17,049) and Titanium ($20,899). That frees customers up for a personal choice without some kind of arbitrary styling penalty. Yes, the hatchback lineup also adds a special Fiesta ST performance model ($25,649) as well. But it deserves its own story, so we’ll just ignore it for this review. The Fiesta starts with a standard 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine (tested here) that makes 120 hp and 112 lb/ft of torque. This four-banger won’t exactly wear you out with adrenaline rushes but it gets the job done while offering a reasonable 8.5/6.5L/100km (city/hwy) fuel economy rating with the standard five-speed manual. Our Titanium tester with the optional sixspeed PowerShift automatic ($1,250) earns an almost similar fuel economy rating of 8.7/6.4L/100km (city/hwy) but, more significantly, in real world testing it returned an average of 7.6L/100km (comb). The PowerShift automatic offers a “D” setting, an “S” setting with delayed sport upshifts and also allows manual shifting via a SelectShift +/- thumb toggle on the left side of the shift knob. With this automatic, the 1.6-litre usually spools at a leisurely 1,500 rpm around town, spinning a little higher than usual on the highway, at around 2,500 rpm at 100 km/h and up to 3,000 rpm at the quasi-legal 120 km/h that everyone drives. I’d almost whine for a taller top gear to lower the revs and save even more fuel but I suspect the engineers compromised for the best ratio applicable to the limited power. Ford also offers a 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbocharged EcoBoost engine ($1,500), the smallest available engine in its class. This award-winning, mighty midget manages to make 123 hp and 148 lb/ft of torque

while improving fuel economy numbers to 7.5/5.5L/100km (city/hwy). Which is all pretty impressive, but I’m taking back my earlier bonus points anyway because, while we can argue about whether the mileage improvement offsets the price premium, for whatever reason, this powertrain choice is restricted to the SE trim level and can only be mated with the five-speed manual. There are, however, plenty of other extras that come standard or available with our topof-the-line Fiesta Titanium. New for 2016, the Fiesta adds four new colours - Shadow Black, Electric Spice, Kona Blue and a White Platinum Metallic Tri-Coat.

But for those thinking small, and thinking premium, the 2016 Fiesta Titanium loads Ford Canada’s smallest car with a lot of big car technologies, luxuries and features. It’s certainly worth a test spin around the block.

“Home James,” I quietly said to myself, as I settled in behind the wheel of the sleek new Jaguar XJL. Maybe I’ve watched too many old movies because I’ve always yearned for the opportunity to just once say something like that to “my driver.” Sadly (in my mind only), I was the driver, not the backseat passenger in this 2016 XJL. And unless I hit it really big in the lottery soon, it’s not likely that I’ll ever have my own chauffeur-driven limo. But, if I did there is no doubt this 2016 XJ has the style and panache of a car that would fit the bill quite nicely. The XJ has long been the flagship of the Jaguar brand, which has been synonymous over the years along with Rolls-Royce and Bentley as the crème de la crème of British automotive manufacturing. All are foreign-owned these days with Jaguar part of the giant Tata Motors family, based in India. However, the XJ is still built in Britain and has had a mild refresh for 2016 with a more modern look outside thanks to a new grille, front and rear fascias and new LED lighting systems, front and rear. Even with the changes, though, it still has that classic Jaguar styling that makes it instantly recognizable. For many buyers, pedigree is what attracts them to a particular brand, but this luxury sedan class is now a wide-open playing field with entries from Audi, BMW, Cadillac and Lexus joining Jaguar in chase of the perceived segment leader, the S-Class Mercedes-Benz. While the legroom is generous, headroom in the backseat of the XJ is compromised somewhat by the low roofline— the price one must pay for the sleek styling! There are three versions of the XJ in allwheel drive format, all with the 3.0-litre engine. They are the XJR Sport AWD ($92,200), XJ Portfolio AWD ($96,000) and XJL Portfolio AWD ($99,000). Two rear-wheel drive variants are offered, both with a 5.0-litre supercharged V8, producing 550 hp. There is a XJR RWD ($121,000) and the XJR L ($124,000). All models come with an eight-speed ZF automatic transmission. For many drivers, the 3.0-litre engine will suffice with a decent 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 6.4 seconds. Those demanding more power will opt for the V8 that drops the 0-100 km/h sprint time to 4.6 seconds, pretty quick for a vehicle that weighs in at 1,884 kg (4,144 lb). The Portfolio model is distinguished by the introduction of a quilted pattern on the seat centre and cushions. In addition, 14-way power seats with four lumbar adjustments are standard. All XJ models have heated and ventilated front and rear seats and the Portfolio features massage functions on both front seats. Interplay between clutch and shifter pure joy on open road Continued from W1 six-speed manual configuration, with gear changes managed through a special B&M racing shifter. The knob is just the right size, the throws are short and sharp and the interplay between clutch and shifter reminds you of just how much fun a well-driven manual tranny can be. Inside, blue metal paint interior accents and blue-bolstered leather sport seats that are part of the normal Turbo packaging harmonize nicely with the unique blue matte exterior. Embroidered Rally Edition floor mats round out the packaging of this limited-production performance model. The Rally Edition lists for $27,199, same as the starting price for the Turbo lineup and, with the inclusion of a normally optional paint job, you realize there has to be some give and take on content. Along with the loss of the panoramic glass sunroof, the Rally Edition’s barer-bones performance emphasis deletes the 7.0-inch navigation system, the 110-volt power outlet, the LED side mirror signal repeaters and, strangely enough, the push-button ignition. with sportier handling to enhance its already nimble dimensions. And the turbo-powered 201 hp engine is really the only way to go within the Veloster lineup. Okay, the acceleration won’t exactly scare you. Hyundai tuned this engine to use wallet-friendly regular octane gas. But the linear progression of power is really about all a front-wheel-drive sporty car, and notice I didn’t say sports car, can handle without getting all sideways and squirrelly. Fuel economy is rated at 9.4/7.0L/100km (city/hwy). My real world result averaged 9.2L/100km (comb), not unexpected considering the playful driving this combination of engine and manual tranny encourages. All in all, it makes for a nice package, sporty with plenty of attitude and roomy for two with some make-do space in the second row and 440 litres of useable hatchback luggage room. Although the Veloster has been dropped in some global markets, it has made some progress here within its narrow sales segment. And with a dedicated, almost cult-like following among its young customer base, the Veloster’s image can only be bolstered by versions like the 2016 Rally Edition, offering limited-production collectibility, head-turning road presence, performance tweaks and custom-like styling enhancements for its fans.

British-made Jaguar XJL features luxurious interior Continued from page W3 intuitive. It has an eight-inch screen that works like a smartphone with “pinch to zoom” and “swipe” functions, allowing the user to scroll between screens. The connected navigation system has what Jaguar calls a Commute Mode that learns the driver’s daily commute and can automatically offer alternative routes to avoid congestion. The audio system has also been upgraded with a standard 825-watt, 17-speaker Meridian surround sound system. If that’s not enough, you can move up to an optional 1,300-watt, 26-speaker Meridian system. For those of us in parts of Canada who have to endure slushy and snowy winter conditions, the all-wheel drive version of the XJ makes a lot of sense. Get behind the wheel and you’ll find the 3.0-litre engine has plenty of power for almost any driving condition you’re about to encounter. Natural Resources Canada lists fuel economy ratings of 14.1/9.3/11.9 L/100 km city/

highway/combined. This is aided in part by a stop-start engine function, which is standard across the model lineup. If you think the XJ is beautiful on the outside, wait until you get inside. It’s luxurious and inviting with soft, plush leather surfaces and rich wood trim that adds elegance to the surroundings. Punch the start button and the hockeypuck style chrome shift dial pops up out of the centre console. Simply turn the dial to ‘D’ and you’re good to go. The driver can also select Dynamic or Winter drive modes as required. Ride and handling are excellent for such a large vehicle and the cabin is well insulated from outside noises and vibrations. All in all, it’s a nice luxury package for a vehicle that has had few changes since its introduction here in 2011. While it may be pricey, the Jaguar XJ is to my mind a beautiful piece of automotive art that has aged well, much like a bottle of fine wine.
