Awards Season Begins! In April this year, the great and the good of theatre came together at the Royal Albert Hall for the iconic Olivier Awards. It was an evening celebrating London’s incredible theatre industry with awards, stars and fantastic performances. The Must-See Show of 2017!

Come and Meet Those Dancing Feet... 42nd Street, Broadway’s biggest show, landed in the West End in April 2017 to rave reviews and nightly standing ovations. From the opening scene where the curtain rises a few inches to reveal a long line of tap shoes thundering away in perfect unison, right through to the final curtain call, this barnstormer of a show is a non-stop whirlwind of sound and dazzling sequins. Words by Lola Lewis

I

t’s April 1933, and famous impresario Julian Marsh is putting on a Broadway show, Pretty Lady, in the middle of the Great Depression. Fading musical star Dorothy Brock has been reluctantly cast as the lead in order to cash in on investment money from her rich beau. Young Peggy Sawyer is fresh off the bus from small-town America, and just another face in the chorus line on Broadway’s newest show. On opening night Peggy bumps into Dorothy during a routine, sending the star to the floor with a broken ankle forcing the curtain to come down. The question now is, who will take over the role and be the new star, as the show must go on... Featuring a score by Harry Warren and Al Dubin, and book by Michael Stewart and

Mark Bramble, the musical is based on the novel by Bradford Ropes and the subsequent 1933 Hollywood film adaptation of the same name. Mark Bramble, coauthor of the book for the original Broadway and West End productions of 42nd Street and director of the 2001 Tony Award® winning revival, returned to direct the new West End production on London’s biggest stage, Theatre Royal Drury Lane. The lead cast includes Sheena Easton (Dorothy Brock), Tom Lister (Julian Marsh), Clare Halse (Peggy Sawyer), Jasna Ivir (Maggie Jones), Norman Bowman (Pat Denning), and Stuart Neal (Billy Lawlor). In her West End debut, Grammy Award winner Sheena Easton shines as Dorothy Brock. Easton sings beautifully but it is her

scene-stealing acting that really impresses. She’s ably supported by the charismatic Tom Lister as Julian Marsh, and enigmatic new star Clare Halse, who is perfectly cast as Peggy Sawyer, the fresh-faced, innocent rookie chorine. Every number, from the iconic “Keep Young and Beautiful” and “42nd Street”, to lesser known songs like “Boulevard of Broken Dreams” (added to

the production especially to showcase Sheena Easton’s voice) evokes the golden age of movies and music. Aside from the glittering costumes and opulent set pieces, the real stars of the show are the ensemble, tapping away in perfect time as if their lives depended on it, arms wind-milling furiously yet gracefully. This is an American classic right royally revived.

From screen to stage:

Musical movie adaptations Movies often turn to the stage for inspiration, but more and more films are spawning stage productions. Here is a look at some popular musicals that were adapted from the big screen. Matilda The path from screen to stage hasn’t always been a smooth one, and celluloid success is no guarantee of musical triumph. But London is currently awash with popular medium-jumpers, from Aladdin and Dreamgirls to critically acclaimed Kinky Boots and brand new Annie.

Matilda is the multi-award-winning musical from the Royal Shakespeare Company, inspired by the beloved book by the incomparable Roald Dahl. This film adaptation tells the story of Matilda Wormwood, a gifted girl who, when she realises she has the power of telekinesis, begins to defend her friends from her evil principal Agatha Trunchbull’s wrath and fight back against her unkind parents. The musical opened in the West End at the Cambridge Theatre in October 2011, and is popular audiences and critics alike.

The Lion King animated movie first came to cinemas in 1994 and made such a huge impact that just five years later it became a West End production. Disney® proved to be just as jaw-droppingly awesome on stage with this wonderfully realised adaptation of their animated hit and is still going strong after 18 years at the Lyceum Theatre.

Annie is based on Harold Gray’s comic strip Little Orphan Annie, which premiered in the 1920s, and became one of the most widely read strips in the 30s and 40s. The original Broadway stage production ran in 1977 for over 2000 performances before calling it a day. In 1982 the movie adaptation of Annie, starring Albert Finney, reintroduced a whole new generation to the iconic songs as “It’s the Hard Knock Life,” “Easy Street,” “I Don’t Need Anything But You,” plus the eternal anthem of optimism, “Tomorrow”.

Annie has been translated into 28 languages the world over and has played in 34 different countries.

Interview

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz Acclaimed as “one of the West End’s true modern classics” (Metro), Wicked has played over 4,000 performances at the Apollo Victoria Theatre where it is now in its 11th smash hit year.

M

ark Curry stars as the legendary Wizard of Oz, and That’s Entertainment caught up with him for a chat... What was it like joining one of the longest running musicals in the West End? At first it was a bit daunting, even for me who has been around a LONG time! I’m stepping into a phenomenally successful show and following in the footsteps of some excellent “Wizards”. The energy and good vibes from cast and crew make being in the show great fun. Can you describe Wicked in three words? Captivating, spectacular and unforgettable. Why did you want to play the Wizard of Oz? I wanted to play The Wizard because I thought I could bring my energy to the character. It’s a challenge to bring out his darker, ambitious side as well as his basic kind and gentle personality. He’s actually a bit of a sociopath who can’t resist the opportunity to be adored and famous. What’s your favourite part of the show? A favourite scene I’m in is during Act 2 when I get to perform the song, “Wonderful”, which tells you everything about The

12

Call us on 0330

Wizard’s character. The scene has tremendous tension between The Wizard and Elphaba. They could potentially destroy each other at this point so he has to work hard to soften the situation. A scene I’m not in but I really enjoy hearing is when Elphaba arrives at University, culminating in her singing, “The Wizard And I”. A top show tune. You’ve done a lot of television in your career. How does this compare with being on the stage?

would be terrific. She has such energy and stage presence. Tom Hanks would also be great – I just love his performances.

If you could be on stage with anyone in the world who would it be?

Two bits actually: Stay in the moment, forget what’s just happened or what you’ll be doing in the next scene AND never take what anyone says about your performance personally, whether it’s good or bad.

I was in “Noises Off”, with the wonderful Millicent Martin and we became great friends. To do something with her again

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?

Acting on television is so different from being on stage. In both areas the actor has to be truthful but in a theatre such as The Apollo Victoria, which is so big, the performance has to reach the back of the circle and still be real. On telly you can keep everything very subtle and small. Presenting on TV is totally different from the stage. When I’m presenting, I’m being myself, it’s not a performance. For me, live telly and live theatre are both such a buzz. What inspired you to get into acting? As a kid I watched a lot of amateur plays and musicals and I remember being captivated. Then when I was about nine years old I played one of the babes, (the other was Bonnie Langford), in a

hether it’s the brooding, menacing opening to Marvin Gaye’s “I Heard It Through The Grapevine”, the startling intro of Martha Reeves’ “Dancing In The Street”, or the feel-good spectacular sound of The Jackson’s “ABC”, Motown songs are immediately recognisable and entirely irresistible to anyone with a decent pair of dancing shoes. These and 63 other stonewall classic tracks have been forged into the stage musical that has been leaving London audiences breathlessly singing its praises (if that’s not a huge tautology!) since 2016. Carole King Story and the Kinks’ Sunny Afternoon) and many shows of this genre struggle to present all of the songs within a cohesive storyline. Nothing could be further from the truth with Motown. Focussing on the highs and lows of Motown’s founder, Berry Gordy, the music works seamlessly alongside a storyline which could very easily slip into the style of a self-aggrandising autobiography. A large proportion of the show is dedicated to (arguably) Gordy’s greatest discovery and subsequent development – that of Diana Ross and the Supremes. But there’s plenty of room on stage for Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson and Mary Wells, many of which are set

I

n June 2017 the show welcomed a host of new cast members, including a new leading man, Matthew Croke in the title role. Matthew stepped into the shoes of Disney’s favourite “street rat” on June 5, and That’s Entertainment caught up with him a few weeks before his debut performance. What is your favourite Disney® film?

Other than Aladdin, my favourite Disney film has got to be Toy Story. I remember when it first came out, my brother and I loved watching it. He would always be Buzz Lightyear and I would be Woody, it was great! How did you feel when you knew you had the leading role of Aladdin?

It’s difficult to put into words because it was such an amazing feeling. It’s so overwhelming, and I’m just sat here pinching myself. I genuinely feel so lucky and I’m so grateful to be in this position; it’s an amazing feeling and it’s something that I’ve dreamt about for such a long time. How does it feel to bring such an iconic animated film character to life? It’s crazy to think that I’m going to be playing this guy. I grew up watching the film and it’s great that now Disney have created this amazing musical. I definitely see similarities between Aladdin and myself and I’m looking forward to putting my own stamp on the role. Being part of such an iconic All Images © Disney

Disney musical is so exciting. I can’t believe I’ll be playing this role that I watched as a kid. What characteristics and similarities have you got? Aladdin is a character I can definitely relate to. He’s an ambitious guy, he wants to make his life as good as it can be. I think there’s lots of similarities there with being an actor and going for the things that you dream about doing; he’s a dreamer and he knows what he wants. I also want to bring the fun element to the character; Aladdin and I are both a bit on the cheeky side. What was it like to meet Trevor and Jade for the first time at the photo shoot? It was great, they are both

such a laugh, and they made me feel so welcome. They’ve been working together for nearly a year now but I still I felt like it was the first time we had all got together. We got on straight away. I had a great day with them. What has been your highlight of rehearsals so far? My highlight so far has got to be working with Dan, Leon and Miles; who play my mates in the show Babkak, Omar and Kassim. Again, like Trevor and Jade, they’ve made me feel so welcome. We’re having a good laugh! Another highlight has been just making the most of being part of such an iconic story. We’re finding new things about the show, it’s a really funny musical and I love that we get to make the

audience laugh every night. What’s your favourite song to perform in the show? It’s difficult to pick my favourite, as they’re all so amazing - but I’ve got to say ‘Proud of Your Boy’ is a pretty special song. It got cut from the film so it’s great that they’ve put it back into the musical. It’s an awesome song. At that moment in the show, Aladdin

is thinking about his mother who has passed away. He’s wanting to better himself, and it’s just a beautiful song. Are you looking forward to opening night? The first time I stepped out on to that stage I was so overwhelmed, the Prince Edward is beautiful and massive - I can’t wait! I’m very nervous but I’m sure by June I’ll be ready for it.

Dear Kristi, My mum has been a fan of Michael Crawford for many years. He announced in early 2016 that he was doing a new musical, ‘The Go Between’, so his grandchildren could see him performing.

When Mum saw an advert for a Newmarket theatre break to see the show, we had to book! On the way down to London, the coach stopped for some retail therapy at the Bicester Village Designer Outlet. Then it was off to the Apollo Theatre, Shaftesbury Avenue - a compact Victorian building. We were sitting on the fourth row of the stalls. It felt like the actors were performing in our front room. Michael Crawford was excellent and in fine voice for a man of 75. He led a top quality cast, complete with on stage pianist, all dressed in superb period costumes. His grandchildren should be very proud of his performance. After a night’s stay in a good hotel, there was time for more shopping on Oxford Street before the coach brought us home. A great weekend which we will remember for a long time. As the famous first line of the book ‘The Go Between’ says ‘The past is a foreign country: they do things differently there’. Andrew Fisher

Dear Kristi, I desperately wanted to see Les Miserables at the Queen’s Theatre but I had no idea how I would achieve this as I am disabled and have specific requirements of where I can be seated on a coach and in a theatre. I decided to phone Newmarket Holidays and spoke to Rebecca in Customer Services. I explained what I wanted - left hand side of the coach, right hand side end of row in the theatre. I also needed to take my electric scooter with me for the time in London and of course safekeeping of the scooter at the theatre, plus disabled access for the hotel room. Well - I just didn’t have any worries. Rebecca checked on all the points I put to her, phoned me back when she said she would - even to tell me she had no news at the time. I booked for myself and my husband and looked forward to the trip.

Everything went smoothly - the coach driver and hotel were great. The only thing worrying me was the scooter at the theatre. Oh ye of little faith! We arrived at the theatre - the Duty Manager was paged and

details and terms and conditions of all our theatre and concert breaks.

came to meet us. I was helped to a waiting area - the Manager took my scooter and showed me the area where it would be placed and then escorted us to our seats. At the interval the Manager appeared next to me and told me my scooter was just in the corridor so that I could go to the ladies room if I wanted. He escorted me through the corridor to the disabled toilet, escorted me back to my seat and took my scooter off again. At the end of the wonderful performance he again appeared at my side with my scooter - then opened a door especially for us because it was a completely flat exit to the pavement outside. What wonderful service from yourselves, from the hotel, and from the Manager at the Queens Theatre. I wanted to let people know that no matter your circumstances everyone on the trip was only too willing to help and Rebecca had arranged everything beautifully. Thank you for a wonderful experience and I look forward to the next Theatre trip with you - Lion King or Phantom decisions, decisions. Kate Badham
