Dreamgirls

What’s the word around town? We’ve sent roving reporter Al Brent around the streets of London to find out what’s up downtown!

Thirty-five years after the ground-breaking original Broadway production, this UK and West End premiere of the sensational and iconic Tony Award®-winning musical Dreamgirls comes to the Savoy Theatre in November. Dreamgirls transports you to a revolutionary time in American music history and charts the tumultuous journey of a young female singing trio from Chicago, Illinois called ‘The Dreams’. They learn the hard lesson that show business is as tough as it is fabulous. Dreamgirls features the classic songs ‘And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going’, ‘I Am Changing’, ‘Listen’ and ‘One Night Only’. This much-anticipated new production will be directed and choreographed by the hugely successful, Tony® and Olivier award-winning Casey Nicholaw (The Book of Mormon, Aladdin, Something Rotten!) and Amber Riley (Glee) will play Effie White.

This classic MGM Gene Kelly film-turned-Tony® awardwinning-musical is coming to the Dominion Theatre from Broadway next year. Set in Paris after WW2, this romantic tale tells the story of American GI Jerry Mulligan who falls for a beautiful young dancer named Lise. This reimagining of the George & Ira Gershwin classic includes many of George and Ira Gershwin’s most popular and timeless songs, including I Got Rhythm, ‘S Wonderful and They Can’t Take That Away From Me, together with George Gershwin’s sublime compositions Concerto in F and An American in Paris. Performances are due to start in March 2017. We will let you know as soon as tickets go on sale!

Watch this space for more details! Based on the iconic, hit movie, this irresistible new musical follows Dewey Finn, a failed, wannabe rock star who decides to earn an extra bit of cash by posing as a supply teacher at a prestigious prep school. There he turns a class of straight –A pupils into a guitarshredding, bass-slapping mind-blowing rock band. But can he get them to the Battle of the Bands without their parents and the school’s headmistress finding out? School of Rock opens in October – subscribe to our email list to be first to hear when theatre packages go on sale!

Daniel O’Donnell FAIRYTALE POPSTAR? Rumours are abound that pop singer Britney Spears may star in the upcoming Cinderella pantomime at the London Palladium. We wait with baited breath to see if the “Oops, I Did It Again” singer graces the West End in what we’re sure will be a spectacular production...

THE REVOLUTION

COMES TO LONDON! Hamilton – Broadway phenomenon and winner of 11 Tony awards comes to West End in October 2017! More news on that soon, we hope!

Feature

Some Kind of Wonderful

If you have any interest in popular music of the last 50 years, and love unmissable theatre and raw, natural talent then Beautiful is the perfect show for you.

To get the low-down on the musical that everybody’s talking about, Beautiful, we sent Phil O’Sullivan to find out more. It may be obvious from the posters that Beautiful tells the story of Carole King. You may also already know that it tells the story of her early life and career with song-writer Gerry Goffin. What you might not realise is just how many songs you never knew came from this industrious pair! The storyline of this ‘jukebox musical’ tracks the ups and downs of the pair’s professional and personal relationship, and the songs that were inspired by these twists and turns.

The storyline of sundered hearts and various love affairs very much takes a back-seat to the fabulous array of well-known, foottapping songs, most of which (but not all) coming from the Goffin & King pairing. The keen-eared listener will spot tracks by Neil Sedaka (‘Oh! Carol!’), the Righteous Brothers (‘You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling’) and The Animals (‘We Gotta Get Our Of This Place’).

Without giving too much of the story away, the show finally tracks how Carole King overcame her stage fright to achieve fame as a solo performer. And the rest, they say, is history. If you have any interest in popular music of the last 50 years, and love unmissable theatre and raw, natural talent then Beautiful is the perfect show for you. As the

songs kept coming, I was constantly saying to myself “she wrote this as well?” and I had no idea she’d written so much of The Drifters back catalogue. Come along to the Aldwych Theatre and prepare to have the night of your life!

Did you know Carole King wrote these hits? Will You Love Me Tomorrow – The Shirelles Take Good Care Of My Baby – Bobby Vee

Who’s That Girl? Carole King is played by Cassidy Janson b.1980, Chipping Barnet Cassidy was the understudy for Elphaba in the original West End production of Wicked before taking over as the standby for the role. Her West End credits also include starring in Avenue Q and originating the role of Maggie in Lend Me A Tenor The Musical. Cassidy’s extensive theatre credits include: Dessa Rose(Trafalgar Studios), Candide & Tick Tick … Boom! (both Menier Chocolate Factory), Company(Southwark Playhouse), Footloose (UK tour), Blood Wedding (Courtyard), Rooms: A Rock Musical (Finborough), Crazy for You (Kilworth House) and Snoopy (Jermyn Street).

Interview

Lorem ipsum faci utem quo dollique volor...

André Rieu Earlier this month we got in touch with The King of the Waltz himself, André Rieu, and got the low down on his new album, The Magic of the Waltz, his homecoming Maastricht Vrijthof concerts this summer, and who he’d most like to perform with on stage. You’ll never guess who it is! Firstly, thank you for taking time out of your incredibly busy schedule of touring and preparing for your imminent homecoming concerts in Maastricht to talk to That’s Entertainment. As the saying goes, ‘home is definitely where the heart is’. How much of a highlight and how emotional are the Vrijthof Concerts for you each year? The concerts on the Vrijthof are the highlight of our year. It has always been my dream to give open air concerts in my hometown. I was born and raised in Maastricht so every year this is very emotional. Last year people from almost 80 nations came to see our concerts. This is wonderful! If your UK fans had to visit one sight, one restaurant and one bar in Maastricht, what would you recommend? I would recommend a visit to the Old town. You can have lunch on any of the terraces on the Vrijthof. It’s nice everywhere! The most famous bar is the Oude Vogelstruys on the Vrijthof and for dinner I prefer to go to Il Giardino on the Onze Lieve Vrouwe Plein.

Your Windsor Waltz, composed to mark the 90th birthday of HM Queen Elizabeth II, has been well received by your fans AND the Queen. What was your inspiration for the various elements of the piece? The music was inspired by some of the greatest British melodies, like Rule Britannia and of course your great National Anthem. At first you hear heralds announce her, then she comes in and she waltzes all night long, just as Queen Victoria did in the time when the waltz was still forbidden. Your new album, The Magic of the Waltz, brings together your own compositions and popular tunes from movies and the charts (such as That’s Amore) with well-known classical pieces such as Edelweiss and The Blue Danube. You clearly enjoy music from many genres. How long can it take you to curate the perfect track listing, and is it sometimes painful to be ruthless and NOT include a song that you love to play?

My wife Marjorie and I choose the compositions and melodies for every album together. Does your personal music collection include any cheesy pop records or other ‘guilty pleasures’ that you’d rather not tell us about? Haha! I am not going to tell you about any of my “guilty pleasures”, no, whether they are musical or not! Now, onto the UK dates of your tour later this year! We know that your UK fans are hugely looking forward to seeing you, but what do you look forward to most and take most enjoyment from when you come to these shores? For my orchestra and me touring the UK is the perfect way to get into the Christmas spirit. Every year we visit a lot of cities in December and celebrate this most joyous season of the year with beautiful waltzes, romantic melodies and beloved Christmas carols. The British people love to sing along with us and we always have such a wonderful time together. As you know, the UK has myriad iconic sights and locations, not just concert venues. If you could perform at ANY of these, where would it be? For instance, in the middle of the esplanade at Edinburgh Castle, at Hyde Park in London, or at Leicester City Football Stadium?!

What is the most romantic place in the UK? Tell me and I will go and perform there as long as it is big enough to host all our fans! Have you ever turned down any famous people who begged to be a part of one of your performances? Is there a musician, singer or celebrity that you would love to do a duet with?

I would love to perform with Bruce Springsteen! I have never turned down anyone famous, no. And I’m not sure that I ever would.

And finally, with so many dates on your international tour this year, you must look forward to some time to recharge the batteries. Other than the comforts of your home, is there a place in the world where you head to relax? Not really. I love to relax in Maastricht in my garden, with my grandchildren. Saying that, every year, Marjorie and I like to spend a few days in Rome with family and friends. But one day I’d love to go to Alaska or to Hawaii. Must be fascinating over there!

Bearing in mind the UK is going to be decked out for Christmas when you visit, are there any traditional UK items that you’ll be adding to your suitcase before bidding farewell? I love to shop for Christmas tree decorations when I travel. I have given Marjorie some beautiful hand-painted decorations as gifts. So if I have time, I will certainly look for some UK items to add to my suitcase, yes. What can your fans expect from your UK concerts this year? Any Christmas magic? Absolutely! It will be a completely new programme. I haven’t chosen the pieces yet, but you can be sure there will be some wonderful Christmas magic.

Going in Green

The Greatest Show

As a first timer to Wicked AND someone who’d never seen The Wizard of Oz, our roving report Al Brent could only go armed with his knowledge that it’s about “the witches of Oz”…

From a group of 20 street performers at its beginnings in 1984, Cirque du Soleil now has close to 4,000 employees, including 1,300 performing artists from almost 50 different countries. Cirque du Soleil has brought wonder and delight to more than 155 million spectators in more than 300 cities in over forty countries on six continents.

I

mpressive statistics aside, the incredible spectacle of a Cirque’ performance is something that exhausts superlatives and defies words. I first saw them in residence at the Treasure Island hotel on the Las Vegas strip in 2004. I had heard rave reviews, but still wasn’t sure how it could possibly

12 years later, I still tell stories of the twirling acrobats, the fabulous clown and compère, and the incredible feats of the strong-men. It truly combines the thrill, strength and spectacle of a traditional circus combined with the grace and

And now, as if to gild the lily, Cirque du Soleil is performing in the majestic setting of London’s Royal Albert Hall.

live up to all the hype. How wrong was I?

160 7733 — That’s Entertainment

Their new show Amaluna invites the audience to a mysterious island governed by Goddesses and guided by the cycles of the moon. In the words of Cirque, “Their queen, Prospera, directs her daughter’s coming-of-age ceremony in a rite that honours femininity, renewal, rebirth and balance which marks the passing of these insights and values from one generation to the next.

Review

In the wake of a storm caused by Prospera, a group of young men lands on the island, triggering an epic, emotional story of love between Prospera’s daughter and a brave young suitor. But theirs is a love that will be put to the test. The couple must face numerous demanding trials and overcome daunting setbacks before they can achieve mutual trust, faith and harmony.” It sounds like something from another planet. Well, if the Ringling Bros. billed themselves as The Greatest Show On Earth, then this is surely the Greatest Show in the Universe.

The show tells the untilnow-untold story of the former friendship between Elphaba, Wicked Witch of the East and Glinda, the Good Witch of the North, and the series of injustices, alliances and betrayals that lead to the famous arrival of Dorothy’s house on the head of the Wicked Witch of the West. Rest assured, all is not as it seems and healthy lessons are learned on the subject of friendships, segregation and focusing on what’s important in life. The show itself is great for anyone aged 8 to 80 and above, and is delivered with a humourous script, some energetic dance routines and a stream of catchy show tunes (including the signature song “Defying Gravity”) that you’ll be humming days later.

At this point, it would be seriously remiss of us to make no mention the theatre itself. Built in 1929 it was described as “a fairy cavern under the sea, or a mermaid’s dream of heaven”, the theatre is still dripping with glorious Art Deco touches and is a treat in itself for any visitor. Having started life as a cinema, the stage area at the Victoria Apollo is smaller than other theatres’, and the owners and stagehands have been forced to think up ingenious ways of storing and moving the sets during and between acts. On top of this, they have a smoke-breathing, animatronic dragon the size of a Cesna aircraft lodged in the crossbeam of the stage, a giant wizard’s head that moves by way of hi-tec *ahem* wizardry and a costume stock that was recently valued at well over £1m. And 2016 is Wicked’s ten year anniversary. Do we need to list any other reasons for you to pay it a visit as soon as possible? All of this is the sum of its parts and more - a funny and emotionally-complex piece of musical theatre whose popularity shows absolutely no sign of diminishing any time soon.

Queen of the West End Motown

London’s West End is an absolute mecca of talent – enjoy some of the best entertainment in the world!

I

n July this year, Beverley Knight returns to her role as Rachel Marron as the stage adaptation of The Bodyguard returns to London. That’s Entertainment caught up with her for a quick chat…

eventually made the decision to move entirely over to tour managing, and that was 12 years ago. I’ve certainly been with Newmarket Holidays a long time – around 25 years at least!

How long have you been a Newmarket Holidays Tour Manager?

What is it about the job that you love?

Gosh, I couldn’t be precise. I worked in the Customer Liaison Department for many years before I finally made the move to ‘go on the road’. For a while I just did little weekend tours and combined tour managing with my office job before I

The variety, and of course the customers. You meet such a diversity of people and even if I do the same tour week after week, it’s always different. What makes a great tour manager? Well, there’s a question! You have to enjoy it. If you do, it’s infectious and I like to think that my passengers enjoy it too. Not forgetting the coach drivers. A skilful, friendly coach driver makes a very important contribution to the success of any tour. The tour manager and driver are the team that bring together the final product after hours of work put in by those in

the office. In addition, one most important little word speak volumes- preparation, preparation, preparation! We’re sure that each tour manager has their own style of working – is there anything in particular that you like to offer customers? I love history so I quite like researching new tours or enlarging on established ones. My favourite commentary stories are ‘people stories’. Historical or topical characters or organisations that have an interesting, heroic or sometimes violent background and are that are associated with the places that we visit. I think passengers enjoy short but factual stories. Also, a small thing I like to do is remember the names of passengers travelling alone and have a brief chat with them, particularly on the first day of a tour. I hope it makes them feel a little less solitary.

Veronica What piece of kit would you not leave the home without? Maps, particularly for passengers who are unfamiliar with our capital city. Some people find London quite daunting and wouldn’t venture and great distance alone, and certainly wouldn’t consider using the Underground. It’s one thing to explain to passengers where an attraction is located but it makes more sense to give them a decent map and mark things for them. Also I always carry a notepad for bus numbers, phone numbers and any other bits of information they may need. I find that people prefer to have something in writing to refer to. What’s your favourite show in London and why? Mamma Mia and Billy Elliot were both memorable. Both cheerful and lively; you come out at the end feeling happy. Also, long-finished I know, but

Whichever of your moods you wish to indulge, London’s Theatreland is sure to have something to fit the bill! Shrek was super. I saw it when Amanda Holden played the princess. She was brilliant. Without giving away names or details, do any funny/ touching moments with customers stick out in your memory? Not a West End tour but in Antwerp. Passengers had free time in the city and I’d walked with them to the Grote Markt in the centre having told them of some places they might like to visit. When passengers came back to the coach, a lovely middle-aged couple were smiling broadly. The lady was proudly showing off a beautiful solitaire diamond ring that must have far exceeded the cost of their holiday. They’d been to the Diamond Quarter and there’d been an impromptu engagement. The coach erupted with cheers and applause. When Newmarket guests are at their show, how do you fill the time? Guests often ask me this question. It’s not easy to go to a show because I’d inevitably have to come out before it was finished in order to start the after-theatre pickups. So, Oxford Street and St Christopher’s Place seem to have a magnetic pull on me. I spend far too long and far too much money in these places!

Don’t miss Beverley Knight in The Bodyguard!

Your Letters Dear Kristi,

Dear Kristi,

I would love to tell you about my trip to see Michael Bublé at the 4U Arena in Manchester in 2014. My sister and I adore Michael and went to the effort of making special t-shirts for the night. We really looked the part! We arrive early and were virtually the first people into the arena, apart from the staff! A lady approached us and introduced herself as Michael’s Official Photographer and asked for photos of our fab get-up. Of course, we were delighted and agreed. The show itself was magical – the atmosphere was incredible, I’ve never been part of anything like it. Halfway through the first song, the photographer reappeared, said she had two seats in the front row, and would we like to go with her. We didn’t need asking twice. He went from being tiny, to virtually touchable! In fact I did touch him. Me and my sister fell in love with him all over again. Easily our most memorable trip with Newmarket! We’ll never forget it!

A few years ago my husband and I went to London’s Criterion Theatre to see ‘The 39 Steps’. We were really pleased because we had really good seats near the front of the stage and my husband was sat at the end of the row. The show was brilliant and very amusing. During the second half I glanced over to my husband and thought ‘that’s strange he seems to be lower in his seat’. As the show progressed I looked again and noticed that he appeared to be even lower again! My husband whispered that his seat was slowly collapsing! The more we tried not to laugh at his situation the harder it became. By the end of the show my husband’s seat was on the floor. It was so funny as I helped him up off the floor. This truly was a night at the theatre we will never forget.

Dear Kristi, This year, as a joint Valentine’s and anniversary present, I booked a weekend trip with Newmarket Holidays to see the Carol King musical Beautiful. We have been to see several shows before (all brilliant!) and this was even better. Travel down was comfortable and our tour guide gave us loads of helpful information about London – places to go, pick-up times etc. As my partner is disabled, it was a great comfort to be dropped off and picked up outside the theatre. We were well looked after by the theatre and given seats near the exit. The next day we enjoyed the music and entertainment in Covent Garden, and we can’t wait for our next trip! To the Editor, I had booked tickets to see Mary Poppins in the West End with my daughter, Shelby. She was six at the time and the trip was a surprise. At the performance itself, I have never seen a child so mesmerised! Shelby loved every minute of it, and continued talking about it to everyone she met, telling them she’d be an actress when she grew up. We’ve since been to see several shows together, including ‘Les Mis’, whose songs she has performed in auditions herself. Shelby is now about to start university to study for a BA in Theatre & Performance, and it all stems from a lady who could fly and a word she has learnt to say backwards! Mrs S J May, North Devon
