This is a wonderful opportunity to enjoy a stay on the sun-blessed shores of Italy’s largest and most spectacular lake. Its clear blue waters, backed by the wooded slopes of craggy mountains, are fringed by elegant resorts, completing the picturesque scene that has drawn visitors for the last hundred years. Equally favoured by mild winds in the winter and cooling breezes in the summer months, Lake Garda’s equable microclimate provides a perfect backdrop for enjoyable holidays. While across the lake the boats ply their trade between the resorts, ashore rest and relaxation are very much the order of the day. Café life, delicious ice cream from a host of gelaterie, plentiful shopping for souvenirs, or just a seat in the sun on a lakeside promenade, are all happy pre-occupations for most, although there are always more active diversions to be enjoyed. With opportunities to take a Grand Circular Tour of the lake, visit Italy’s most evocative city, Venice, to enjoy Verona and to be awestruck by the dramatic Dolomites, it’s no wonder that Lake Garda is our most popular European holiday destination.

Discover the very special corner of the world that straddles southwest France and Spain’s Catalan northeast, as you enjoy journeys into the heart of the stunning Pyrenean countryside aboard some delightful, historic railway lines. With a stay in a colourful Costa Brava resort – and another ‘road train’ journey to enjoy – this is a perfect holiday choice. The holiday includes a variety of excursions, beginning with the ride aboard the tractor-hauled, ‘tourist’ train, the Roses Express, which winds its un-express-like way into the wooded Cap de Creus National Park, and the historic Yellow Train, which heads through the French Pyrenees from picturesque Villefranche-de-Conflent, to Mont-Louis with its Citadel and city walls. A 45-minute journey aboard the two-car Núria Rack Railway – ‘twinned’ with Switzerland’s famous Jungfraujoch mountain railway – through a steep, forested gorge to remote ski station and pilgrimage shrine Núria, and a last Pyrenean ride aboard the hundred-year-old ‘Red’ Train du pays Cathare et du Fenouillèdes, complete a wonderful holiday.
