Welcome

to Newmarket Holidays 33 years’ experience

Excellent Hotels

We have been looking after the travel arrangements of happy customers since 1983, and we are privileged to be able to continue to share the sights and sounds, the natural wonders and the man-made glories of our wonderful world with them. When you select a Newmarket Holiday, you can rest assured that you have chosen a company that will provide you with an experience that not only belies the price you pay, but that also matches and regularly exceeds your expectations. All of your travel arrangements are safe and financially protected through our ATOL bond with the CAA.

We truly do hand pick the hotels used on our India tours, carefully looking for places that will not just be a welcome rest at the end of a busy day’s sightseeing but somewhere which will become a memorable part of your holiday. We stay in some truly unique properties. Shahpura House in Jaipur is an oasis away from the busy city with lovely lawns surrounding the pool while heritage hotels like Patan Mahal, high in the hills, are reached only by camel cart. There’s Raj Niwas Palace in Dholpur, set in the grounds of a former palace and where all rooms have a private plunge pool, or enjoy luxury tented accommodation at the Vanaashrya Resort. Location is important too - the Trident hotel in Agra is just around the corner from the Taj Mahal - as is food, and a plentiful buffet breakfast and dinner awaits in all hotels. See the tour pages for full details.

Our Tour Managers Adding immeasurably to the pleasure of every Newmarket escorted tour, our dedicated, professional Tour Managers bring to life the places visited, providing colour and local background to the sights and attractions.

Meals & sightseeing Our tours include virtually all sightseeing as well as entrance fees to the monuments we visit. Half board accommodation is the norm with a scattering of lunches also included on most tours. All of this adds to the extraordinary value of your holiday.

Upgrade your flight All of our tours to India include travel in economy class with reputable scheduled airlines where all meals, drinks and entertainment are included - Virgin Atlantic, Jet Airways and Etihad Airways. We are pleased to offer competitively priced upgrades on all tours. Please contact us for further information.

Strange & wonderful

Holy men, stepwells, border ceremonies, breath-taking rickshaw rides‌ India is all of these and so much more!

Stepwells The other-worldly stepwells of India are an incredible sight to behold. One of the finest examples, Abhaneri’s Chand Baori, is some 1,300 years old and still serves the age old purpose of conserving water in an arid climate, and acting as a gathering place for locals during periods of intense heat – the temperature at the bottom being some 4-5 degrees lower than at the surface! You may recognise it from the UK film Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. See pages 14, 16, 18 & 20 for tours that visit Chand Baori

The ghats of Varanasi The most sacred river of Hinduism, the Ganges attracts countless pilgrims every day. The river’s banks are lined with ghats (a series of steps leading down to the water’s edge) used by the faithful to approach and enter the water, so that their bodies (and indeed souls) can be purified by the flowing water. See page 22 for our tour where you can witness the sacred Aarti rituals on the ghats of the Ganges

Kathakali dancing

Kathakali dancing One of the major forms of classical Indian dance, kathakali is distinguished by its elaborately colourful make-up, costumes and face-masks. Using both facial and hand gestures, dancers also employ movements from ancient martial arts to express ideas and stories. See pages 20 & 24 for our tour that includes a kathakali performance

Day Two After arrival, there is time to freshen up before you join your tour manager on a guided tour introducing you to the vibrant Old City. Discover the historic Red Fort and Jama Masjid Mosque, and enjoy a rickshaw ride through busy Chandni Chowk. Later explore New Delhi with its historic India Gate war memorial and the vast boulevard of the Rajpath. Day Three After breakfast, we journey to Agra. Upon arrival, enjoy an afternoon visit to Agra Fort, the monumental citadel of Moghul emperors, including Shah Jahan, builder of the nearby Taj Mahal. Tour the ‘walled city’ and enjoy the grandeur of the palaces and courtyards. Day Four An undoubted highlight of the tour is this morning’s visit to the Taj to witness the ‘monument to undying love’ at sunrise. After breakfast we continue to Jaipur. Pay a visit en-route to deserted city Fatehpur Sikri, former Moghul capital and almost perfectly preserved 400 years after it was constructed. Day Five Visit Amber and its 16th-century hill-top fort, enjoying the stupendous views. Continue on to the City Palace complex with its ancient astronomical observatory. Later, we visit the 18th-century ‘Palace of the Winds’, with its screened balconies, behind which royal women might view the city while hidden in purdah. Day Six We head to the Rajasthani city of Patan, above which, reached by camel cart, towers Patan Mahal, a restored palace that is now a beautiful heritage hotel. Enjoy an afternoon walking tour of Patan, and an evening of music and dancing before dinner.

Day Seven Journey back to Delhi for the short flight to sacred Varanasi. This evening, witness the Hindu ceremony of Aarti performed in front of the Dasshashwamedh ghat, one of a hundred sets of steps leading down to the River Ganges. Day Eight At sunrise, board a riverboat for a view of pilgrims performing rituals at the ghats. Later, we travel to Sarnath, one of Buddhism’s holiest sites, where the Buddha preached his first sermon following enlightenment. Visit the fascinating archaeological museum – home to the Lion Capital of Ashoka, the symbol of modern India. Day Nine Fly to Mumbai. Enjoy a guided tour where sights include Ghandi’s Mani Bhavan house, Marine Drive, the monumental Gateway of India, the Gothic fantasy of the Victoria Terminus railway station and the Taj Mahal Hotel. Day Ten A last day begins with a visit to the vast Hindu cave temple on Elephanta Island. Return to the city for the chance to see the extraordinary Dabbawalas in action - some 1,000 ‘tiffin-box’ distributors who carry home-cooked lunches to some 160,000 office-workers each day with unerring logistical accuracy! This afternoon, enjoy a visit to the famous Prince of Wales Museum, with its astonishing collection of Western Indian artefacts. After a Farewell Dinner we return to the airport for the return overnight flight. Day 11 Arrive back in the UK this morning, at the end of a truly wonderful journey of the senses.
