Books for Kids Allow: 1-1½ Hours

Books for Kids creates libraries, donates books, and implements literacy programs to develop the critical early foundation and skills which young children need to be successful in life. In 1986, the Books for Kids Foundation was created by a few individuals in New York City who recognized that children who do not have adequate access to books must surmount enormous disadvantages when entering school. What began as an informal project to collect and distribute 1,000 books to needy children for the holidays quickly took on much greater dimensions when we placed 2,000 books in the first year and 9,000 in the next. It was clear to the founders that an organization providing access to age-appropriate books for low-income children with little or no resources was desperately needed.

Sightseeing Areas in New York Times Square No set of steps screams bright lights, big city better than Times Square’s red glass steps. The new TKTS booth is a sweeping cascade of 27 ruby-red structural glass steps. When you walk to the top of this manmade amphitheatre in Times Square, you will make a bee-line for the top row, as visitors don’t see the steps as seats but as steps to the top, against the wishes of the designers. When you reach the top, you are rewarded by a panorama of Times Square: the picture-perfect photo opportunity for tourist and locals alike.

Wall Street & the Financial District The heart of the New York banking and trading community, this section of Manhattan is one of the oldest and still has the original narrow and winding cobblestone streets. Wall Street’s name derives from the barricade erected by Dutch settlers in 1653 to repel the British. The Financial District is also home to many great bargain shops and fine restaurants as well as the high rise office towers.

Battery Park The park’s name comes from the cannons that once lined State Street which now frame the park. It provides a refuge from the busy Financial District holding more than its fair share of history, some of the details of which are supplied by the texts attached to the lampposts around the park.

Central Park Like all of New York, Central Park is entirely the work of man – the designers, Olmsted and Vaux, and the 3,000 labourers who moved a billion cubic feet of earth to create 843 acres of primordial nature in the midst of Manhattan. Within its boundaries you’ll find a zoo, several lakes and ponds (one for boating, one for fishing, and one for model sail boating), ice-skating rink and numerous playgrounds and fountains. Among the more recent additions to the park is Strawberry Fields, laid out as a tribute to musician John Lennon and overlooked by the Dakota building where he lived and was fatally shot.

Greenwich Village The closest any American neighbourhood comes to a corner of Paris, Greenwich Village has been home to artists and writers, entertainers, intellectuals, and bohemians since the turn of the 20th century. The cafes, restaurants and bars of the culturally vibrant village are a major element in Manhattan social life. The East Village, a Mecca for hippies in the 1960s, is still home to young people attracted not only by low rents but also by experimental music clubs and theatres and cutting-edge fashion.

Chinatown An estimated 150,000 people, mostly Chinese but also Vietnamese and Cambodians live in the tight knit streets of Chinatown, lined by restaurants, herbalist shops and stalls laden with exotic foodstuffs. Sights worth seeing in Chinatown are the Museum of Chinese in the Americas on Mulberry Street, the first Shearith Israel Cemetery, which is Manhattan’s oldest Jewish graveyard, and the brightly decorated shopping centres that are filled with bargains!

Chelsea Chelsea is a neighbourhood on the West Side of the borough of Manhattan. To the north of Chelsea is the neighbourhood of Hell’s Kitchen, also known as “Clinton”, to the northeast is the Garment District, to the east are NoMad and the Flatiron District, to the southwest is the Meatpacking District and to the southeast is the West Village. Chelsea is a composite of town houses, low-rise apartment buildings, luxury high-rises and trendy attractions like the High Line, the elevated park built atop former railroad tracks. Set in former factories are more than 200 art galleries as well as Chelsea Market, filled with upscale food purveyors, restaurants and shops. The western part of Chelsea has become a centre of the New York art world, with many art galleries located in both new buildings and rehabilitated warehouses.

The High Line An ambitious urban renewal project that spans the Meatpacking District and West Chelsea, the High Line opened in 2009. It is a stunning transformation of a disused freight rail line that once moved goods and produce around lower Manhattan. An elevated promenade-cum-public park, it rises up to become an elevated catwalk in the treeline, while also paying homage to its history, with steel rails peeking out from the ground. Tours of the High Line last approximately 75 minutes, and include information on the structure’s history, Friends of the High Line’s role in the preservation and reuse of the High Line as a public space, and information on the High Line’s distinctive architectural features and horticultural design elements.

Brooklyn Bridge Completed in May 1883, the Brooklyn Bridge provided the first link between Brooklyn and Manhattan. With a total length of 6,775 feet, it became the world’s longest suspension bridge. The most memorable aspect is the view of the Manhattan Skyline as you cross from the Brooklyn side. Even today you may find a view from the Brooklyn Bridge better than one from the top of one of New York’s many skyscrapers

Brooklyn Heights Walk over the Brooklyn Bridge and take the left fork to emerge in one of New York City’s most beautiful and historic and coveted neighbourhoods. Make sure you take in the Promenade, a terrace with the best views of lower Manhattan, the East River and Brooklyn Bridge.

Prospect Park Prospect Park is a 585-acre urban oasis located in the heart of Brooklyn, New York City’s most populous borough. This masterpiece of famed landscape, designed by architects Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, who also designed Central Park, features the 90-acre Long Meadow, the 60-acre Lake and Brooklyn’s only forest. The country’s first urban Audubon Center, the Prospect Park Zoo, and the Celebrate Brooklyn! Performing Arts Festival are just a few of the cultural attractions that make their home at the Park.

Williamsburg One of Brooklyn’s most popular and exciting neighborhoods, straddles old and new. You can explore the lively arts, music and boutique scene here, relax in numerous cafes, dine in some very good restaurants, as well as soak up the neighbourhood’s creative energy and young vibe.

Museums - Art & Design Guggenheim Museum Frank Lloyd Wright’s stunningly designed Museum has been a daring addition to Fifth Avenue landscape since the late 1950s. The innovations continue inside where, rather than being hung in a room like galleries, the exhibits are arranged along in a spiral ramp, allowing visitors to start at the top and steadily make their way down. The architecture may overpower the art, but fans will find plenty to thrill them at this landmark!

Tour and Workshop - Duration: 2½ Hours Students can take part in an interactive education programme, during which they’ll explore various aspects of the Guggenheim’s permanent collection and special exhibitions and engage in discussions, as well as activities involving writing, drawing or movement in response to works on view. Following their thematic gallery tour, students participate in a related studio workshop experience where they create their own works of art in the museum’s digital or studio art labs.

Cooper–Hewitt National Design Museum The Cooper-Hewitt Museum, is the only museum in the United States devoted exclusively to the study of historical and contemporary design, housed in the luxuriously appointed former mansion of steel mogul Andrew Carnegie. It explores many diverse facets of art and design with outstanding temporary shows. Ceramics, wall coverings, textiles, drawings and prints form the bulk of the museums stock of 250,000 pieces and the basis of most of the themed exhibitions. The collection began with oddments that the Hewitt sisters picked up on a visit to London in 1897.

Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) Since 1929 the MoMA has committed itself to amassing the world’s leading collection of the art of our time. Soaring atriums house large scale works like the Bell Helicopter, while more intimate galleries display smaller paintings like the work of Monet.

Skyscraper Museum The Skyscraper Museum recognizes the city’s architectural heritage and examines the people and the history that formed the famous skylines. The museum looks into the design aspects of the buildings as well as how technology has paved the way for even more impressive building opportunities. Educator-lead tours allow students to interact with the museum’s collections and gain an appreciation of skyscrapers and their role in society as well as a better understanding of the methods of constructing tall buildings.

Metropolitan Museum of Art Founded in 1870, this mighty museum houses more than three million items, truly a vast collection of anything and everything of artistic value ever produced anywhere in the world. More than deserving of its reputation as one of the world’s greatest museums, the Met’s contents exhaust visitors long before they exhaust them. Art lovers can meander through galleries that chart virtually the entire course of western art. Among the highlights is a dazzling stock of Tiffany glasswork and a special section devoted to architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Although self-guided admission is popular, having a guided tour is not much more expensive.

Whitney Museum of American Art The Whitney Museum of American Art presents the full range of twentieth-century and contemporary American art, with a special focus on works by living artists. The Whitney’s collection is comprised of over 18,000 works of art including sculpture, paintings, photographs, prints, films, and video by over 2,800 artists. Museums The 9/11 Memorial & Museum The 9/11 Memorial & Museum are located at the site of the former World Trade Center complex.

Can support: • History

The National September 11 Memorial is a tribute of remembrance and honour to the nearly 3,000 people killed in the terror attacks of September 11, 2001 at the World Trade Center site, near Shanksville, Pa., and at the Pentagon, as well as the six people killed in the World Trade Center bombing in February 1993. The Memorial’s twin reflecting pools are each nearly an acre in size and feature the largest manmade waterfalls in North America. The pools sit within the footprints where the Twin Towers once stood. Architect Michael Arad and landscape architect Peter Walker created the Memorial design selected from a global design competition that included more than 5,200 entries from 63 nations. The names of every person who died in the 2001 and 1993 attacks are inscribed into bronze panels edging the Memorial pools, a powerful reminder of the largest loss of life resulting from a foreign attack on American soil and the greatest single loss of rescue personnel in American history. The National September 11 Memorial Museum serves as the country’s principal institution for examining the implications of the events of 9/11, documenting the impact of those events and exploring the continuing significance of September 11, 2001. The Museum’s 110,000 square feet of exhibition space is located within the archaeological heart of the World Trade Center site – telling the story of 9/11 through multimedia displays, archives, narratives and a collection of monumental and authentic artefacts. The lives of every victim of the 2001 and 1993 attacks is commemorated as visitors have the opportunity to learn about the men, women and children who died. The monumental artefacts of the Museum provide a link to the events of 9/11, while presenting intimate stories of loss, compassion, reckoning and recovery that are central to telling the story of the attacks and the aftermath.

One of the most popular sections of the museum is The Rose Center for Earth and Space which encompasses the spectacular Hayden Sphere (Planetarium) and exhibitions that explore the vast range of sizes in the cosmos, the 13-billion-year history of the universe, the nature of galaxies, stars, and planets, and the dynamic features of planet Earth.

Getting Around On Foot Walking is the best way to see New York’s sites (as long as you wear comfortable shoes!); and to walk the length of a single block takes approximately 4 minutes.

Subway MTA New York City Transit operates one of the world’s largest subway systems with 24hr express and local services, 842 miles of track, and 468 stations in four boroughs. Study Experiences can pre-order your Metrocards prior to your trip.

Bus New York’s bus system is simpler but slower than the subway, although it does have the advantage of cross- town routes. Over three dozen services operate with bus stops every two or three blocks, indicated by red, white and blue poles with route numbers marked on them.

Taxi The New York Yellow Taxis are one of the most popular sights in the city. When they are available for hire they display an illuminated sign on the roof and can be hailed from anywhere on the street. It is easier to use subways during daylight hours, as the roads are usually jam packed and even though the taxis are reasonably priced, if there is a jam it can end up being quite pricey to get to your destination! The evenings and on Sundays are the recommended times to use taxis.

Private Coach Hire If you prefer your group not to use public transport during their stay and want to visit several attractions across Manhattan and neighbouring boroughs then private coach hire can be arranged.

Notes To help plan your trip please use this section to jot down all the choices you are interested in discussing with us.
