Pay attention to clean, modern lines on items like picture frames or tables and pair with rich, weighty pieces like tufted sofas or mirrors with ornate frames. It’s all about mixing hard with soft, square with round, heavy with light.”

Break the mould with moulding: Crown moulding always adds architectural interest and a sense of luxury to any room. For an affordable and easy update, consider polyurethane or MDF moulding. “Polyurethane moulding is especially lightweight and easy to cut and install,” says Grech. “Achieve subtle texture by painting moulding in a different sheen than the wall and ceiling. Traditionally, crown moulding is painted white to contrast the wall. To add even more contrast, paint the ceiling a colour as well.” For the richest colour results, Grech recommends using Aura from Benjamin Moore, which is visibly thicker and produces the most saturated colour even in the deepest shades.

Complement with cozy finishes: Vintage accessories, low-pile shag rugs, heaps of hand-sewn pillows in different materials, and old fashioned candle holders will give any living room a warm vibe. You spend more time indoors during the winter months, so it’s inevitable that you might start to feel a little cramped, especially if you live in a smaller home. If that’s the case, you may consider finishing your basement to increase your square footage. It can definitely add value and increase comfort, but there are a few things you’ll want to do to ensure it’s a surefire success:

Address moisture I’ve seen a lot of poorly executed basement renos, where the contractor comes in, throws up some studs, tosses in some fibreglass batts and vapour barrier, then slaps on some drywall. Often, problems arise down the

Finally, finish with a smart membrane vapour control layer, tuck tape and moisture-

Soundproof I am a big proponent of soundproofing. It’s easier to add during construction than realizing it’s needed afterward and trying to remedy noise issues. Soundproofing is the ultimate solution to maximize your basement’s peace, quiet and privacy. Look for a product called Safe ‘n’ Sound, also by Roxul. I like it because it’s easy to install and adds important fire and moisture resistance. One layer should suffice. Simply press into place between the studs or joists. Use resilient channels before adding dry wall. With the most important elements addressed to ensure proper performance, indoor air quality, and energy efficiency, you can start planning the finishes––flooring, paint, furniture, décor and accessories. These will show off your personality and really make the space feel like home.
