The powder cool drinks were called Thirst Buster and Whizz Pop, which were exported. ‘I had about eight to 12 staff members, which quickly grew to 18 as our customer base expanded. I soon needed more space for production and took over the factory next door, which added another 400m2 to the facility. At the time, I also had to introduce working overtime to meet the rising demand in export orders.’ Fillies' next move was to purchase a 1 500m2 half built factory in Epping in 1996. ‘I sub-divided it

The Aerosol & Cosmetics Works managed to get the new powder manufacturing facility up and running fast without compromising on quality control and the high standard of their finished product. Suppliers who attended the launch said it was encouraging to see such a ramp up in their production capacity and a near 400 percent increase in their raw material requirements, which bodes well for the industry as a whole. Other suppliers to the factory include Split Line Manufacturing for plastic bottles and Zetes SA, which supplies quality labels and internationally compliant barcoding. POSITIVE PERSPECTIVE ‘While the benefits of using a contract manufacturing partner are diverse, including the increased focus on core competencies, lower costs, flexibility, access to expertise and reduced capital expenditure, relationships need to be carefully managed,’ Woods comments. Too

many partnerships fall short of expectations, either because he believes those expectations are flawed from the very beginning, or many contract manufacturers don’t always have the necessary influence with their suppliers since the original manufacturers often select their partners at the outset. ‘This is a key driver for an increase in costs from the contract manufacturer. Also, flexibility can be compromised by the contract manufacturer’s focus – or lack thereof – on low costs and low inventory,’ he maintains. The talcum powder factory gives customers choice. ‘They can manufacture closer to their markets, saving on transport costs,’ he adds. ‘In periods of labour instability a second
