It’s time for a laugh
Dear Reader
Here we are with the last issue for 2024. It’s been a crazy year that has flown past in the blink of an eye. Well, that’s how it feels to me! So, I figured we could all do with something light-hearted that will put a smile on our faces as we wind down towards the year-end.
I came across an article about the 2024 Nikon Comedy Wildlife Awards - photos of an ant looking down on us, smooching owlets, and a tiny flying squirrel doing its best impression of a crime boss - these are just some of the visuals I had to share.
The awards were founded in 2015 by professional photographers Paul Joynson-Hicks and Tom Sullam. They wanted to fuse exceptional wildlife photography with the power of humour in a bid to promote the conservation of wildlife and habitats. This year, the competition received a record number of entries - just under 9 000 in total, from 98 different countries.
Each year the competition supports a sustainable conservation organisation. This year it is working with the Whitley Fund for Nature - a UK-based charity that supports conservation leaders working in their home countries across the Global South.
Photographer Alexander Pansier captured this image of a red ant looking down on us in the Netherlands last autumn. He named it ‘Hello World’. “I liked the tones of this autumn leaf. So warm,” Pansier says. “It was hard to take this image because of the fast-moving ant, but with a little help of a flashlight I was able to freeze the motion.”
Sarthak Ranganadhan, who took this photo of ‘Smooching Owlets’ in Gurgaon, India, says: “Our parents always find a way to embarrass us; I guess that’s also true in the case of spotted owlets.”
Ranganadhan says it was funny to see the spotted owlets attempting to get some privacy while their little offspring stood right next to them.
Felicity.Garbers@newmedia.co.za
Photographer Przemyslaw Jakubczyk captured this image of a bream appearing to chase a bald eagle at Szczecin Lagoon in Poland. “Every annoyed and overtired fish needs to de-stress by hunting for a bald eagle,” Jakubczyk jokes. He named his photo ‘Unexpected Role Swap’.
Photographer Takashi Kubo took this photo of a flying squirrel in Hokkaido Japan. “It looked like he was sucking a cigar, and he looked like a mafia boss,” Kubo says.
This image of southern rockhopper penguins was taken on Pebble Island in the Falkland Islands. “On the penguin highway, these rockhoppers are moving into town, and this town ain't big enough for all of them,” photographer Ralph Robinson jokes. “I set up my camera a good distance from this ridge where rockhopper penguins were returning from feeding in the southern Atlantic Ocean in the Falkland Islands,” Robinson says, adding that they looked ready for a fight.
Photographer Artur Stankeiwicz positioned himself on the bank at Mana Pools National Park in Zimbabwe, hoping to catch a fight between the hippos.
But they were all peaceful, with a few raising their heads to investigate his presence. Instead, Stankiewicz got the idea of capturing this portrait with water plants decorating a hippo’s head.
“It looked like the guy just got out of the hairdresser with a big smile on his face.”
He named his photograph ‘I’m Too Sexy for my Love’.
“I
is a universal concept’.
So, now it is time to wish you all a very happy and safe festive season. We are nearly on page 365 of the 365-page yearbook. Are you ready to close this book and start a new one? I know I am.
Scott Frier likes this photo because it is reminiscent of an old TV commercial.

HIGHLIGHTS
COLDBLOCK PROVIDES THE ANSWER TO ASSAYING PROCESSES
Historically, gold-copper mining operations have had to rely upon two separate assaying methods: fire assay for gold and hot plate digestion for copper. Fire assay is a common, time-honoured, multistep assaying method that takes hours to complete, requires a high degree of expertise, and necessitates the use of lead fluxes and the requisite safety measures. The hot plate digestion method used for copper also requires multiple steps and takes hours to complete.
Benefits realised by mining laboratories since introducing ColdBlock into the assaying process include:
Shorter turnaround times – Samples being sent from the mill and mine teams to the lab require accurate determination of elemental content in a timely manner. With fire assay methods, it can take a day or longer to generate assay results. With ColdBlock, labs are now able to provide results to the operating groups within hours.
Reduction of lead exposure – The gold fire assay process requires the use of lead as a reagent. Employee lead exposure is a risk, and regular testing is required. With ColdBlock digestion technology, mining companies are significantly reducing the use of fire assay, which has led to a meaningful reduction in risk of lead exposure for the team.
Precision and accuracy – Mining companies have reconfirmed the accuracy and precision of results received, using ColdBlock/ICP-MS process as part of their QA/QC process. This has been done by comparing ColdBlock results against duplicates run through the fire assay facility, and through independent global commercial lab partners.
Cost savings – Assaying with two separate methods (as is common with polymetallic precious/base metal mining operations) is not just time-consuming but costly. Reducing fire assay needs and relying on a single assaying method with ColdBlock results in significant savings in time, labour and consumables.

The high sample throughput and the extremely wide measurement range from nanometres to millimetres are the reasons for the method’s popularity in so many laboratories. However, drawbacks of laser diffraction analysers are poor resolution for large particles, limited sensitivity for oversize, and the inability to measure particle shape. These downsides of laser diffraction, however, are the strengths of image analysis. Thanks to the unique combination of both techniques, the SYNC particle analyser provides information that is not available from laser diffraction alone, and improves the overall accuracy of size measurement.

PERMISSIBLE LAB AIR EXPOSURE LIMITS: PROTECTING YOUR HEALTH
In chemistry labs, the risk of inhaling hazardous chemicals is ever present. Erlab specialises in containing, filtering, and returning clean air into the lab to ensure your safety. With 50 years of expertise in chemical filtration, Erlab provides easy safety communication through lights and beeps, remote status filter updates and alerts, full compliance with international filtration safety standard AFNOR NF X 15-211, and a high level of after-sale service from Labotec, the local supplier for Erlab.
Understanding the risks
Chemicals used in laboratories often have strict permissible exposure limits (PEL) set by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) in the USA, which are also applicable in many other countries. These limits are crucial for maintaining a safe working environment.
Exceeding these limits for prolonged periods (eight hours per day) can seriously jeopardise your health. Graham’s Law states that air molecules collide with toxic gas molecules, spreading them rapidly throughout the room, increasing the risk of exposure.
Erlab’s R&D laboratories' eValiQuest analysis looks at the interactions between molecules and validates the filtration technology adapted to your handling. Based on this scientific analysis, the laboratory recommends the type of equipment, filtration column configuration and enclosure size that will ensure your protection.
Limitations of traditional storage and fume hoods
Traditional fume hoods offer high airflow but can generate turbulence,
HI802 IRIS SPECTROPHOTOMETER
The HI802 iris spectrophotometer quickly identifies Hanna Instruments vial methods by reading the barcode on reagent vials across multiple methods that support the use of a single-zero measurement.
The barcode reader for method identification is removable to allow other methods and cuvette adapters (included) to be used for maximum versatility. HI802 iris portable spectrophotometer allows for measurement in the spectrum of all wavelengths of visible light and not just prespecified wavelengths.
Spectrophotometers work by isolating light at specific wavelengths from white light. This compact meter incorporates several features that facilitate both fantastic performance and exceptional usability.
• Automatic method identification of barcoded sample vials
• Removable barcode reader for maximum versatility
• Advanced split beam optical system Rechargeable li-ion battery
• User customisable methods
Vial barcode reader
Automatic method identification of barcoded sample vials is an exciting feature of the HI802. The HI802 visible spectrophotometer scans an inserted barcoded vial and automatically
potentially returning some chemical vapours towards the user through the front sash opening. Additionally, unventilated storage cabinets can release concentrated chemical vapours into your lab when opened, posing an immediate inhalation risk.
This combination of factors makes it critical to choose advanced solutions for chemical handling and storage.
To ensure the safety of your fume hood, containment tests are essential. The SF6 tracer gas containment test verifies that no chemical vapours escape through the front sash opening. According to ASHRAE 110 and ANSI/ AIHA Z9.5-2003 standards, when 4 liters per minute of SF6 tracer gas are injected into the fume hood, a maximum of 0.05ppm should be detected at the nose level of a mannequin.
The Erlab Solution
Erlab’s fume hoods offer advanced solutions for safe chemical handling and storage:
• Superior filtration: Effectively filters gases, solvents, powders, and particulates
Smart technology: Smart-Light Communication indicates the hood’s operational status
Remote monitoring: The eGuard App allows you to monitor the hood, change settings, and receive safety alerts remotely
• Ergonomic design: The 6° slanted sash offers optimal visibility and a comfortable workspace
detects both method type and method range, significantly reducing the risk of errors and aiding measurement procedure.
Vial rotation
Vial rotation during measurement allows for method identification and for several absorbance readings. The instrument then converts the readings to concentration units and the result is shown on the LCD display. This rotational averaging of signals during measurement (with the lamp on) ensures improved method accuracy.
Use of a single-zero measurement across multiple vial methods where blank correction is done with DI water. This ensures that sample features, rather than instrument changes, are reflected in the instrument’s measurements and contributes to ease of use and stable readings.
Universal cuvette holder and auto-recognition
The built-in cuvette holder holds both 22mm round cuvettes and rectangular cuvettes with a 5cm pathlength. Adapters for the cuvette holder are available to hold other 13 and 16mm round cuvettes, and 10mm square cuvettes, including the 13mm vial adapter with barcode reader. Rectangular cuvettes have longer
Case Study: TEFAL Laboratory Challenge and constraints
Tefal conducted a risk analysis to determine the number of fume cupboards needed for the new laboratory. This analysis revealed that the planned ventilation system did not allow for the installation of a sufficient number of fume cupboards, as the building’s extractions had been undersized despite the substantial investment.
Solution
Erlab conducted a chemical hazard analysis ahead of the manipulations to be carried out in the laboratory to propose the best protection solution for the client’s needs. This service is part of the ESP*.
Result
Laboratory personnel now have a sufficient number of fume cupboards to carry out all their handling in complete safety.
Thanks to the installation of filtration fume cupboards, the volume of air treated in the building was reduced, while maintaining an airchange rate of seven changes per hour. The building uses less energy, and operating costs have been reduced. As a result, the number of air-handling units was reduced from seven to four, freeing up space and reducing airhandling costs with a return on investment estimated at two years.
pathlengths, which result in higher sensitivity in readings of low absorbance samples. Additionally, the meter permits the selection of the size of the cuvette used in custom user methods from the available sizes. For all methods, the programmed cuvette size is displayed on the screen to assure that the proper pathlength is being used by the meter when calculating measurements.
System check
Upon turning on the meter, a performance check occurs to confirm that the light source is working properly and to calibrate the position of the grating. The grating calibration works by scanning for the ‘zero order’ light reflecting off the grating. If any mechanical problems are present, the meter will display an alert. This feature establishes confidence in measurements, knowing that the meter is always working properly without needing to run any additional tests.

FFS VERIFIES MOISTURE WITH NEW METROHM ECO KARL FISCHER TITRATOR
Fuel Firing Services (FFS) was established in 1974 to provide specialist hydrocarbon waste recovery solutions in the petroleum sector. Ship slops, lubricating oils and other waste oils are received at production facilities across the country where specialised refining takes place.
Monitoring moisture content in used and refined oils is pivotal in guiding the refining process, and to certify final product conformance to required specifications. Thus, FFS Refiners relies on the Metrohm Eco Karl Fischer, which is ideal for determining moisture in a wide variety of materials.
FFS Refiners based their investment on the reliability, precision and service support offered by Metrohm.
The challenge of water activity
In the food industry, water activity is a vital parameter for maintaining product quality and extending shelf life. High water activity levels can promote the growth of bacteria, yeasts, and moulds, leading to premature spoilage, texture degradation, and loss of nutritional value. For instance, in muesli containing raisins, seeds and bran flakes, the moisture migration from raisins to bran flakes over
time results in dried-out raisins and soggy bran flakes.
In the pharmaceutical sector, water activity impacts the stability of proteins, enzymes, and biopharmaceutical components. It also affects hygroscopic excipients like starch and cellulose, which are sensitive to moisture, causing caking or clumping of powders. Issues such as API hydrolyses lead to efficacy and potential degradation of the drug. This degradation not only impacts the drug’s performance but also poses significant safety risks to patients.
Addressing water activity with Novasina LabMaster Neo

BIOLOGICAL TESTING & BIOTECHNOLOGY
CHEMICAL EXTRACTIONS AND BIOLOGICAL TESTING
The Mixer Mill MM 400 is a truly multipurpose mill designed for dry, wet and cryogenic grinding of small volumes up to 2 x 20ml. It mixes and homogenises powders and suspensions with a frequency of 30Hz within seconds; it is unbeatably fast and easy to operate.
The compact benchtop unit is suitable for classic homogenisation processes, as well as for biological cell disruption for DNA/RNA and protein extraction. Long processing times up to 99 hours make the MM400 ideally suited for research applications, for example in mechanochemistry.
Regarding performance and flexibility of this mill, there is no equivalent technology available on the market.
The MM 400 is the first laboratory mill that can be calibrated. RETSCH initially calibrates time and frequency of the mill and offers a regular calibration service to ensure reproducible milling processes.
Mixer mills are frequently used for homogenising biological samples.
The so-called bead beating with small glass beads is an established method for cell disruption of yeasts, microalgae and bacteria. The sample is only moderately warmed in the process, which can be reduced to a minimum by pre-cooling.
The MM 400 allows for efficient cell disruption of up to 240ml cell suspension for DNA/RNA and protein extraction. For accurate diagnosis of infections, it is possible to isolate intact bacteria from tissue in 8 x 30ml bottles or 10 x 5ml vials by using adapters.
For the pulverisation of 25 to 30g plant material, such as cannabis flower, conical centrifuge tubes are best suited. Up to eight tissue samples, such as fresh liver in buffer solution, can also be homogenised in these 50ml tubes using steel or zirconium oxide balls.
To keep the mechanical stress on the vials as low as possible, a reduced frequency and a high filling level, e.g. with buffer and sample, is recommended.

RAMAN SPECTROSCOPY
The easy way to analyse polymers
Plastics can be divisive since they are convenient and inexpensive yet have a harmful impact on the environment. These materials are found everywhere – from museums to modern medicine, and even in the ocean waves. Plastic is ubiquitous, and Raman spectroscopy can be used anywhere it is located for identification, classification, and quality testing purposes.
Raman spectroscopy is increasingly chosen for polymer analysis because it is nondestructive, requires no sample preparation, and gives results in just seconds. It is easy on the user; even non-technical operators can collect data on-site. Raman is also environmentally friendly – requiring no chemicals, solvents, or materials for sample prep – and it does not generate any waste.
Learn more about the fundamentals of Raman spectroscopy in our blog article.
Corrosion inhibitors from some selected compounds and plant extracts, such as ionic liquids, quinoxaline derivatives, flavonoids derivatives, thiazolidinediones, synthesized carboxylic acids and amino esters, pyrazole derivatives, sulphonamides, sulphonyl amides derivatives, Lippia javanica, Helichrysum kraussii, and others have been successfully reported as excellent for mild steel, aluminium, zinc and copper metals in various acids and bases.
The BioLogic SP200 PGSTAT will be used for the electrochemical investigations that are fundamental to the understanding of basic corrosion inhibition mechanisms.
The new range of pyridine-free reagents for reliable Karl Fischer titration
On many occasions it is essential to know the amount of water present in a sample. Water can influence the reactivity, stability, and shelf life, etc, of products. Karl Fischer titration has been the globally accepted method for the determination of water since the beginning of the 20th century. It is based on the Bunsen reaction, a fast, two-phase reaction, with a stoichiometric relationship between the I2 consumed and the amount of water in the sample.
The first KF reagents developed contained pyridine in their formulation, supposedly essential for the reaction, but later experiments showed that pyridine only acts as a buffer substance and could be replaced by other basic compounds capable of carrying out the same function. For this reason, the new Karl Fischer Aquagent reagents contain imidazoles instead of pyridine, alternative bases with good buffering capacity that allow stable titration end points to be quickly obtained. Aquagent is the Scharlau name given to a wide range of Karl Fischer titration reagents. The newly developed manufacturing and control method allows us to launch a new Aquagent with multiple advantages for the user, listed below. We offer a wide, improved range of reagents for sample titration with reliable results, which satisfy the needs of modern-day laboratories in the determination of water using Karl Fischer.
New Aquagent advantages:
• More stable and robust factor
Faster initial stabilisation
• Greater reaction speed
• More stable endpoint
• Greater homogeneity between batches and within the same batch
• Suitable for a wide variety of matrices
• Greater variety of formats Less environmental impact
